Absolutely rude staff. Walked up the cashier standing there with a smirk on her face and doesn't say one word to me. After a moment of staring I simply just ask if she's ready for an order to which she replies with "I'm standing here". I'm going through a family medical crisis and the last thing I or anyone visiting a hospital need is to be greeted with rudeness for no reason whatsoever. Happened at 1:00pm the day of this posting in case management is curious. I was so taken aback I just left without ordering anything because I just couldn't believe what was happening. You guys seriously need to teach your workers there are some sympathy because this is a hospital and should be aware that people are in crisis and don't deserve to be treated like that read more

If this was not in a hospital, it would cost more. It would legitimately compete with a Starbucks if this were standalone. Good lattes and fresh pastries. Service is pretty fast even with the long lines. read more

I frequently have meetings at Mass General Hospital and always make a point to stop by Coffee Central. Surprisingly this café has the best coffee in Boston. Bonus, they are open 24/7! The muffins and croissants are always fresh and delicious but overall, the usual coffee shop food. If you are in the neighborhood, I suggest you stop in for a great cup of coffee. This coffee shop *could* be really really shitty since it's in MGH and is really convenient, but it's not. Some even go as far to say that the hospital is a loss leader for Coffee Central. Open 24 hours. Solid coffee. They have an espresso machine too but I never get any drinks there, basically because I don't wanna wait and they have ridiculous (although mostly fast moving lines). Cheap. Great service...but then again I'm there at least twice a day. Infinitely better than the brewed swill they have in the cafeteria, and it definitely beats the 5 minute walk to ABP/Starbucks. Plus I'm lazy and I like it when they make my coffee. Their baked goods are mostly made in-house and are delicious as well. read more

If there was no Coffee Central, I might not still be alive! You might think I'm exaggerating, but I'm not so sure. This place is the only thing to break up my monotonous job working overnight. It keeps me awake; it keeps me energized. The best part is that the coffee is really good. You'd expect it to be horrible, especially at 3AM, but it's not surprisingly! I've posted before about the frozen cappachinos which are to die for as well as the yummy french toast bagels (so good they sell out quickly!) But this review is to add my new favorite....the blueberry muffin flavored iced coffee. I sampled the flavor hot and simply didn't like it but trust me, try it as iced coffee....it's great!! read more

I go here every day. Its coffee central. I mean. What do you expect. Churning out caffeinated drinks for all of MGH efficiently and effectively day after day. Star rating is for daytime. Overnight coffee central gets 0 stars. Takes them like 10 min to make 1 coffee at night. read more

I don't drink coffee often, but once in a while I do enjoy the flavor. Moreso, I love hot chocolate. I think coffee central has the best hot chocolate in the hospital. Maybe even the surrounding beacon hill area. It's only $1.40 for a small hot chocolate. The drink is rich, but not overwhelming. It fills me up and keeps me going when I need a pick-me-up. I've had a coffee occasionally, and it is the better tasting coffee in comparison to the hospital cafeteria. There is a dedicated beverage line, which moves very fast. So if you don't want any food items, jump in the drinks-only line no matter how long it is. Food options are good for snacks, but not necessarily meals. Okay, I find it hilariously awesome that Coffee Central is on Yelp. I, too, work at MGH. But to be more specific, I work the overnight shift. In the emergency room. Which means that Coffee Central, with its 24/7 ready supply of caffeine and carbohydrates, is the sole saving grace for myself and everyone else I work with. I don't drink coffee, but I get a large iced tea every night at midnight. Their iced tea is good, strong, and most importantly, consistent. They have excellent muffins, I recommend their bagels w/cream cheese above all but Kuppel's, and I know several people who nearly live and die by what specialty flavors of hot and iced coffee are on tap that day. They also have sodas and bottles of water, and two flavors of smoothies, and six or seven hot tea choices. Only drawback is that between 1130pm and 530am or so they take away the flavored whipped cream cheeses and just hand out the Philly single-serve tubs. Balls! And yes, unlike most things in Boston (besides the emergency room), it is open 24 hours -- but if you're not staff or with a patient in the ER, you'll have to get by security to get an after-visiting-hours fix. read more

Before I realized that the coffee place at MGH was well worth frequenting, I used to hike up Cambridge St to Dunkin Donuts or suck it up and deal with the burnt coffee beans at Starbucks. Then one day I thought, if the MDs in my department are drinking MGH coffee like water, it can't be ALL that bad, right? Well, maybe they just want to stay awake, so even if it is just convenience, something keeps the hospital staff coming back. Basically, this coffee is GOOD. I'm not a huge coffee drinker, and I stick to a basic coffee-skim milk order. That said, my coffee palate isn't that developed, so you'll have to excuse my inability to properly describe the taste, aroma, etc. It totally beats Starbucks, which isn't hard to do, and the new-ish ABP in the Charles River Park complex. I love Dunkins, and Coffee Central is on par (if not better because it's way cheaper). The coffee at Coffee Central (and South in the Yawkey Building) is not the same as the cafe brews - so skip the cafeterias in the basement and the Wang Lobby and head back to the main entrance for your MGH caffeine fix. read more

Coffee Central is a coffee bar inside Mass General Hospital. There is also a Coffee South (and I'm guessing perhaps a Coffee North, West, and East, but MGH is too big for me to have wandered everywhere). My coffee desires are plain and simple, yet I do appreciate flavor. Coffee Central has what I want: regular or dark roast coffee, black. The coffee is way better than Starbucks, and also better than ABP's. So if you're on Cambridge St and you'd like some tasty coffee, go for Coffee Central. Go into MGH main entrance, walk into the hallway leading away from the lobby, and you'll find it. If your coffee desires are more eclectic than mine, they have your expected varieties of lattes and what-nots, but I can't tell you anything about that. They also have the usual bagels, scones, cookies and everything else you'd expect with coffee. In the summer its especially nice because you can go right outside onto the courtyard of MGH where you can bask in the sun on their lawn. Oh, if you happen to be in the Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary, don't get coffee from their cafeteria. Coffee Central kicks their ass and then some. read more

This review is only for people who work or are at MGH. No one in their right mind would come here to just try out Coffee Central. How did they possibly bottle the essence of french toast and put it in a bagel? I'm so confused. But that's what you get in a french toast bagel. It smells like french toast...but it's a bagel. It's mind-boggling. (get it toasted with a little butter, sprinkle some sugar on it...OMG delicious!) What else is baffling are the crazy coffee flavors they have. Birthday cake? Snickeroo? And they taste good! The muffins are my downfall, looove the cappuccino chip. I just want to chop all the muffin tops off and eat them. This place is surprisingly cheap! I'm sure if they raised their prices people would still come here (please don't raise your prices). It's 24 hours and the people who work there aren't cranky, which is great because I am cranky at 3am! read more

Solid coffee that that is strong enough to keep you working through the night, and isn't as offensively priced as Starbucks or ABP. Their baked goods too are great when fresh. Later in the day though some of them tend to get hard (ahem, chocolate chip cookies), and aren't as glorious. Mainly go here for the coffee, though. Well done, MGH! read more

I have visited this coffee stand about 5 times. The coffee is tasty and cheap! The pastries are fresh and again, cheap. The rotating daily flavored coffees are very good iced. I especially enjoyed the blueberry muffin flavored iced coffee. Nice to know this stand is open 24 hours. read more

If you are ordering a single simple black coffee, you might be in luck. If you order a coffee and a tea, you may get a coffee with a tea bag and a cup of hot water with milk. You should not order coffee before 8am and after lunch because the staff dont wake up til 8 am and then go to sleep at noon. Have been coming here everyday for years, and it is steadily declining in service and taste. Usually I am completely ignored as I give an order, and more often than not I am disappointed with my coffee. I work for an MGH affiliate (bet you can't guess which one) so I occasionally venture over for meetings. I normally hate flavored coffee (as a bit of a coffee snob), but I can admit that I'm wrong now that I have tasted the sweet nectar of Blueberry Muffin iced coffee. The coffee was fixed perfectly to my prissy specifications (extra cream, one sugar), and the lines are set up to be efficient. The coffees change daily, and Coffee Central is nice enough to post a weekly schedule to best plot your next coffee run .. I mean important work meeting. read more

Like any coffee shop, don't go there on a hot day. There are tons of people asking for iced drinks and that slows down the service. But other than that, I like some of their pastry a lot (blueberry turnover) and I recommend it. They usually don't have it in morning, and they often runs out of it later afternoon, though. read more

I love coffee central!!! I love coffee and remember a time at MGH when coffee central was not open 24 hours a day (made for a painful night shift). My only complaint (if you can call it a complaint) is at 2AM if one of the servers is on a break that only leaves one person and the line backs up. So it can take almost 15 minutes to get much needed coffee. But, I don't want to be a whiner and will take the good with the bad, as I love having the wonderful coffee people there 24 hours a day to service my coffee needs. read more

This place is truly a hidden gem of Boston! I am a huge fan of their hot chocolate. I don't know if it's made from a powder mix or something more substantial, but it's delicious! It's really rich and creamy tasting--not like dark brown sugar water you may find some other places trying to pass off as hot chocolate. It's so good that I've even driven out here just to have a gab session over coffee/hot chocolate with a nursing friend of mine. And for $1.25 for a small (which really isn't even all that small), how can you go wrong! I tried their strawberry-banana smoothie once which was a cool and satisfying treat. But I think they should really change the name to slushy, rather than smoothie because it's definitely on the icier side. Nonetheless, still great tasting! I have heard their coffee is great too (again, not just brown-colored water), but I'm not a coffee drinker so I don't know firsthand. They also carry a very large selection of bagels, pastries, muffins, etc. I've only had their "everything" bagel and was pleasantly surprised. Often times, I find that bagel offerings at coffee shops are often stale and bland. Theirs are perfect! Soft and chewy and very tasty. The line for this place gets really long during the lunch hours. What's nice, though, is that they have an express line for beverage-only orders which moves incredibly swiftly. I've even walked by this place at 10 or 11 at night and there's always a long line of eager beavers. read more

I've got to agree with Kendra on this, I find it hilarious and absolutely awesome that Coffee Central has made it to Yelp. As a former MGHer, Coffee Central was my daily Mecca. I'm not a coffee person but they always get my tea with the perfect amount of extra sugar! In the summer they've got delicious smoothies. And from what I've heard the coffee is pretty great too. I know EMTs who get excited about their trips to Mass General just because it means they get to pit stop at the coffee shop. And honestly, it was not my main reason for choice - but I was super excited when I got my MGH Clinical site for nursing school because I knew it meant reuniting myself with Coffee Central! Not only do they serve a great beverage by the nicest staff - who really do get to remember a face (and an order) if you frequent enough! - but they've got tasty huge muffins and my beloved bacon and cheese scones [among other great treats - including bagels and croissants]. I love my chai tea lattes from Starbucks, but when I was working at The General I skipped on by those green awnings, eager to grab my tea and scone before kick-starting my day. Now open 24 hours, don't confuse Coffee Central with Coffee South. The product is the same, but I'm biased. The staff, as mentioned above is just wonderful at the centerally located coffee shop in the Bigelow building. Although, plug to Partners, all our employees are fantastic ;-P Just make sure you pick the most opportune time to head to the shop or you'll find yourself in quite the expansive line (I'm not the only one who loves Coffee Central ! ) read more

I was very disturbed to see that a sign offering a "well rounded lunch" from coffee central that included a bagel, cream cheese and odwalla bar. This promotes imbalanced and poor nutrition to patients and employees. What happened to fruits, vegetables and lean protein? Time for them to rethink their approach to promoting healthy meals! read more

I am SHOCKED this place has a 5 star rating overall. Granted, it is a hospital coffee shop, so I shouldn't hold it to the same standards of "regular" coffee shops. And I will agree with others that the coffee is decent, and very well priced. However, it is well overdue that someone talks about the terrible service. Yes they're quick, but every time I've been there (and I do go there a lot) and order a cafe mocha, the employees look at me as though I have just killed their dog. I'm constantly met with blank stares, rolling eyes, and never ever ever a "Hello" or a smile. The employees at MGH are truly amazing, and they make the stressful and often depressing hospital environment a wonderful place to be. Therefore, the Coffee Central employees stick out as a stain on employee relations, and so desperately need a customer service training. Seriously guys, would it kill you to smile? Of all places to work, a hospital is surely an environment where everyone would benefit from some positivity. read more
