I have been eyeing Kyo Matcha every time I walk by this area, and I was happy to hear that they finally opened! My friends and I shared the hojicha/ube parfait, ube milk cap cake, and matcha towel cake. Unfortunately, we did come around 7pm on a Friday, so a lot of their stuff was sold out. The hojicha/ube parfait was not bad. I really enjoyed the hojicha soft serve. I did not taste the ube flavor as much, though. The portion was actually pretty decent. I liked the cake and corn flakes but found the mochi unpalatable. The matcha towel cake was disappointing. The crepe layer is far too thin in comparison to the excess amount of cream present in this dessert. While the cream is not overly sweet, there was too much of it. The matcha flavoring was prominent, which was nice. My favorite was the ube milk cap cake. It looked the best and tasted the best. The cake itself was soft and spongy, although it did not have much flavor. The cream was light and not overly sweet, pairing well with the cake. I do wish the ube flavor was more prominent in the dish, but it is fine. Service was surprisingly fast. We got our dessert within 5 minutes after ordering. While there is seating both inside and outside, it is limited as there is a large influx of people coming to try this spot right now. I may come back if it does not seem as packed in the future to try other things on their menu. read more

We shared the soy mochi milk cap cake and the dream of Sakura. The Dream of Sakura for $3.50 is an experience but I wouldn't get this again. It's flavored with a brown sugar syrup and some soy powder. It gave a Bug's Life water droplet telescope. The soy mochi milk cap was good. Not overly sweet which was nice, but didn't hold too much flavor. Cake was soft, similar to most Asian fruit cakes. The price is steep for the size you get tho. The service was really quick, we went during a weekend after eating ramen next door. Good lighting. Just seemed a bit crammed in the middle where there was a place to take a photo op but can't because there's a whole line of tables and a small step you'd have to watch out for I'd go back to try the towel cakes or another milk cap for the experience but wouldn't be my first choice with the price. read more

Kyo Matcha is one of the first shops to open up on the stretch of new restaurants near St. Mary's stop on the Green Line. I came here a few days after their opening weekend around 3 PM and they were already sold out of so many things. I waited around 40ish minutes to order and ended up getting the ube milk cap cake, sakura mousse cake, and sunrise green tea. The sunrise tea was okay and the boba was chewy. The to-go containers are designed nicely and have a marble countertop likeness to them. The milk cap cake is your traditional sponge cake, which is light and airy and the ube milk topping is very subtle but creamy. The sakura mousse slid off the bottom Oreo crumble and has a gelatinous top layer with a small sakura in the middle. I enjoyed the cheese mousse layer which was creamy, but not too dense. Kyo matcha is a very cute shop with nice ambiance and good variety. The presentation and service are a 10/10. Food was an 8/10. Really yummy and great for new matcha drinkers. Not for hardcore matcha lovers. The matcha lacks some of the depth and intensity I've had from other places. If you're looking for authentic matcha in Boston, Kyo Matcha is the place to go. They've got matcha everything (lattes, ice cream, crepes, pudding, parfait and slush). I tried the matcha latte ($6.50) and it was delicious. The flavor was rich and the drink texture was thick. This was my second matcha drink of the day and it did not disappoint. My friend got the matcha soft serve - she said it was very good! There was a long line and the cafe was pretty busy, so we had to wait about 10-15 minutes but the experience was worth it. 5/5 for service. Employees were kind, efficient and helpful given how hectic the small store was. The person at the counter even kindly refilled the water cups even while fulfilling orders. The reason why I am lowering my stars is not because I think Kyo matcha is bad, but just not terrific. I've attached a photo of my drink, which was the Matcha Latte Float, regular sweetness, and mochi with red bean as extra. The total price was $9.90 . I was shocked as I realized just how much ice my drink had, and there is were some ice shards in the ice cream as if the drink had been frozen and melted for me. I know it's customary for stores to add lots of ice to their drinks, but I feel like there's a mutual understanding of how much ice is too much. I decided to pull up all the ice I had as it felt like every bit I tried taking I had an ice cube in it. I was also given a lid when asked for dine-in, so ice cream spilled being stuck to the lid, but the main reason why I spilled so much was the damn ice cubes. Even when comparing the amount of ice side by side, I just can't believe that much ice was in my cup. Even thought the melted ice cream AND latte amounted to half the cup (minus my spill), I was more impressed that they managed to fill any amount of matcha in my cup. This is not a diss at the employees, as I'm sure they are only following a recipe given to them. I don't even hate Kyo matcha. I'll probably just recommend people to get their ice cream or dessert, as they seem more worth your money than the drinks. Heck that's probably what I will get next time too. I'm pretty picky about my matcha because I hate when it tastes bitter or artificial, but their drinks are SO good! My friend got the regular matcha latte and I got mine with red bean. I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor. There's a perfect balance of bean and matcha in my drink. We also got the Hokkaido roll cake. I usually don't like roll cake because the cream is too dense, but I would definitely get this roll cake again. I think the sweet and salty flavors pair really well together. However, the price was a bit steep. One slice of cake was $10 and the drinks were generally $7-9. Definitely would come back but probably not super frequently given the cost. The Kyo Matcha craze has certainly hit Brookline, and over the past week there have been lines spanning out the door. To be clear, this is a chain restaurant that has multiple locations both domestically in the US and internationally. Therefore, I was a little surprised by the hype it received but I was excited to give it a try. The line was long, but obviously this is no fault of the restaurant. However, when we finally got to order we learned many of their cakes were sold out. I was a little disappointed this was not communicated somehow to patrons who waited up to 30-45 minutes in line. Nevertheless, we decided to order from what was available. I found the Ube towel cake left a lot to be desired. The taste was subtle (which I usually like) but the texture seemed off. Personally, I've had significantly better ube cakes/pastries in NYC. I guess it isn't the most fair comparison, as again- kyo matcha is a chain restaurant that has some limitations. I don't feel like there are significantly better options in Boston currently. Overall I left slightly disappointed given the hype but it was about what I would have expected if there was not so much excitement surrounding the opening. read more
