So let me just say I love the decor and how lively it is when you walk in. We were non reservation guests so they did their best to accommodate. Now as for service it was a little shakey. I would suggest a manager on the floor to keep the servers on task and also to touch tables. That goes a long way and buys time if a server is in the weeds. Pricing was good for downtown and they validate parking for 2 hours. This is nice because you're parked in a secure parking garage, and it's only a short walk to the elevators. So we all got gumbo along with an entree. Honestly the gumbo was good it just wasn't my favorite. The beef was too tough. I did appreciate a change from other gumbos in the city and the deep flavors from the well executed roux. I got the crab Caesar salad which my only request get some baby gems. I was tussling with that salad and up the anchovy flavor in the dressing. Use freshly grated/shaved Parmesan. The cornbread croutons was a thoughtful and playful southern touch. My friend got the shrimp pasta it was good just not hot so the flavors didn't stand out. But I see the vision overall it's worth trying. The catfish batter didn't hold well but it was seasoned good and the jalapeño ranch was nice. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! This was my first time at Kulture. I'm in Houston for business from Cali and wanted Southern Soul Food. I had the Gumbo appetizer and in all my travels THIS WAS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!! I also had the Catfish dinner and as the saying goes "They don't Miss" this place is certified. The service was top notch. The young lady behind the bar made my very specific drink to perfection and she even added a twist that I will now forever incorporate in my drinks at home. Quick summary: I made a reservation, received slow service, ordered food, waited 30 minutes for food then was told that the kitchen was closed so they couldn't prepare what we wanted. Automatic 20% gratuity on all orders! I made a reservation for Sunday Apr. 14 @ 2:30 PM. I arrived and spoke with the hostess at exactly 2:38 pm (well within the 15 minute grace period for all reservations). I was seated and received waters from the person bussing tables. No one else approached my table for at least 10 minutes. So I told the same busser that I was ready to order. He proceeded to find us a waitress. Another 5 or so minutes went by before any waitress came and took our order. After waiting about 30 minutes the waitress came to our table and said we wouldn't be served because the kitchen was already closed! I told her I wanted to speak to a manager. The manager walked by my table at least 3-4 times before stopping. He told us he could make my boyfriend's order with the 1 piece of leftover catsfish in the kitchen (at full price) and that for my order the kitchen could "Whip something up" with the chicken that was leftover at a discounted price. Rather than just eating what was "leftover" we decided to leave because at that point we had been there for an hour. Okay, so here is the deal. I would like to give this place a 5 star rating just on GP but I feel like the menu is a tad stretched in that some of the items were not exactly establishing a genre if I had to describe the place to someone else who was looking for recommendations. Not to mention the happy hour timeframe that my sister found online was not in line with reality so we did miss out on that. Nonetheless, we were hungry and enjoying each other's company so we still ordered and gave it a chance. I understand that items run out sometimes but there were a few different things that were not available and we were there on a day that the staff did say was not a busy day so maybe some tailoring to the order predictions, not sure. Maybe I am being critical unnecessarily. I will say all of the staff that we interacted with were nice and down to earth and we LAUGHED. This place is one of the best places I've been to in a while. Inside was bright and open. The hostess was warm and welcoming. Everyone was super nice. I felt very comfortable being there. I'm an expecting mother on a low sodium diet so I thought it would be a great idea to try a vegan restaurant. After researching I found Kulture. I read the menu options and the reviews so I thought I would give it a try but to my disappointment they didn't have any vegan options beside a salad which I got. But that's not the only reason I gave them 3 stars. First of all, our waitress (Precious) was a very sweet girl and gave me and my friend suggestions but she wasn't very attentive. You have to park in the garage which they validate but only up to 2 hours. I mention that because we should have been in and out in under 2 hours but what held us up was the fact that my friend ordered the oxtails (which was on the Lunch menu) and she told us we had to wait till they started to serve dinner to order oxtails; which didn't make sense since it was on the LUNCH MENU. Then I wanted some HAPPY HOUR wings/fries to go but she gave us some BS reason why I couldn't order them to go. THENNNN, we waited another 20 mins for our food to come, keep in mind I had a Crab Caesar. Then, once our food came, Precious checked on us maybe once and that was it. So once we were done eating we waited another 10 mins just to get her attention so we could get our check and get out of there. Which means we ended up still paying to park because we were there past 2 hrs. AND KEEP IN MIND it wasn't packed at all. (FYI, they charge a 20% gratuity per party and I feel that she didn't deserve the $26 tip that she got, she deserved maybe $10 but NOT $26.) Second of all, the food was good but it took so long to get Precious attention that my friend ended up not getting dessert, even though she eventually changed her mind because she doesn't like bread pudding but was willing to try it if the waitress had came to check on us more than once. Overall, the vibe was great, cozy, relaxed and the food and drinks was good with great portions but because of everything mainly the 20% gratuity and the amount of unnecessary time we wasted we probably won't come back. FYI: They really need to update their menus because I probably wouldn't have visit if I had known they didn't have vegan options besides the Crab Caesar. That gave off false advertising vibes. I couldn't get any of the food I went there for because they are going through a change of menu and currently there is a very limited menu. I was there and waiting for two other people. I wish the waiter came and asked me if I needed a drink or can I get you anything while waiting. I didn't know who my wait staff was and I had to flag him when he came to the table next to me. He was near the bar area and never approached. I had the oxtail shepherds pie. It was $30. I think they could have used any of the less expensive cuts of meat and had a better pie. The food was great, only issue for my first experience there last night at about 9:15 I sat down with my mother n law, wife and two kids. The man that was attending my table was a bigger heavy set black man with big dreadlocks in a ponytail up top, off the initial interaction he came off rude/upset, he had 0 manners what so ever as we all said please and thank you for everything, he was also behind the bar when not attending to us. After ordering starters for us he then came back to ask if we needed anything else, my wife asked for a lemonade and her mother asked for coke which they only had Pepsi and was fine. 30 minutes later he never brung the drinks as I had to get that attention of a women serving another table and she brought the drinks in less then 2 minutes. Finally made it to Kulture! Such a VIBE!! The fact that it's downtown is the reason it took me so long to get here .... traffic, parking, need I say more? Kulture does validate your parking ticket from the garage up to 2 hours. I visited on yesterday for Sunday brunch (reservations are strongly advised) we got there around 1:00ish, it wasn't to crowded but within the hour it was packed! Service - Our waitress did the best she could based on the number of tables she was waiting on ... they need help, if you're looking for a job :) Ambiance - Loved all the glass and the open space, I can only imagine what it's like at night. Literally for the music alone, I could've stayed there all day. They had a jamming playlist going when we came in, by 2:00 the live band was setting up and they did not disappoint, this lady Marium Echo was singing all your favorites, so talented. I got the cajun omelette with grits and biscuits ... a friend got the French toast (bananas foster) with bacon and eggs. It was all so fresh and so delicious. I opted for the Saturday brunch for my first visit. The service started strong as we were one of two tables being waited on by our waitress. We placed our orders and then came two large parties and once they were seated, our waitress was assigned to them and just like that, service began to suffer. Our appetizer the calas(fritters and dip) - the dip which is served hot had a fermented taste and kick to it combined with the fritters also savory was not a good combination. The flavors seem to compete with each other rather than compliment one another. On its own however, the fritters were fantastic. Personal suggestion: this dish could be reconstructed and served with a sugarcane sauce. The sweetness from the sugarcane would enhance the savory flavors of the fritters while keeping you on brand with your African Caribbean influences. The oxtails ragout was excellent. The coconut grits reminds me so much of the Ghanaian rice porridge and the fried poached egg also our fried boiled egg. Brilliant plating and wonderful flavors. The chicken served on the waffles again reminded me of home. We make a fried chicken and stew it just like the chicken here but to serve it on waffles (which were divine) is new to me! I see this as the union of two cultures. It made me think of Africans in the diaspora and the union of the two cultures which have become our lives in America. Honestly, profound! The bread pudding which I was most excited about was a huge letdown. I suppose the pastry chef has changed it from the croissant like version that was previously being served? Not quite sure but what I was served came out cold and grainy in the mouth. This place is very close to the convention center so I walked over for lunch. The vibes are super nice and I wish I had a chance to come back for the happy hour and night time activities. The lunch menu was pretty limited in my opinion and it seemed like it was Caribbean cuisine mixed with southern cuisines or at least inspired by. I ended up choosing macaroni and cheese and the greens purses. It took quite a while for me to find something. I also ended up ordering the sorrel tea. It was really good and refreshing, not too sweet. The macaroni was delicious! Very savory and filling. The greens purses were pretty tasty as well. They had smoked turkey inside which added a nice texture and flavor to the dish. My meal turned out to be a little pricey so I wasn't prepared to pay that much for lunch but I was happy to support a Black owned business. I am not one who usually writes reviews but my experience at Kulture on yesterday was absolutely amazing and I need to give the owner and staff their flowers. I've been in Houston for the 2025 NBC-LEO conference, and as great as the food here in TX has been I was really starting to get homesick for some good old fashioned soul food, and Kulture did NOT disappoint. I got the fried chicken dinner which came with collards and mac & cheese and everything was so so good. I don't know what they did to the chicken but I'm not typically a fan of white meat chicken because it's usually overcooked and dry; however, the fried chicken breast here was literally running with delicious juiciness. Even today when I finished the leftovers that juiciness was still locked in and delicious. If more restaurants could fry chicken breast like this I might would eat it more. The staff was just as kind as they could be and very welcoming. The chef even gave me some of the candied yams to try and that was just simply the nicest gesture. Ok Ok Ok... I can rock with this place. Definitely a Hoston's favorite. Me and my table tried a little of errrrthing! Overall, price was about $13 on up for your meal. Very reasonable 5 stars.
