OMG! This is the first time me and my coworker have been here and damn are we super excited about this GEM! We came from across the street and it is such a game changer. Told my other coworker that we wanted Thai and she suggested we come here instead. She said it is a bit pricey, but says that the flavors are there compared to others she's tried around Concord (mind you our office moved from Alameda). She did not disappoint us at all and we ordered 3 lunch specials and half it within us. The best decision we ever made, when it came to not knowing what to eat and wanting to try it all - LOL! Satay chicken was really juicy and tender and the amount of flavor on here was really good. We also ate the curry noodles with chicken, chicken basil and sweet and sour chicken (not pictured because we ate it LOL and yes we order ALL chicken). I will say out of all 3 of these, the basil chicken and the curry combined together on my plate was honestly the best I've had. The basil chicken has thee perfect amount of spice added to it. It was like a perfect hot cheeto spice - LOL that's how I tell people how spicy things are. The Thai ice tea THOUGH, was the best I've ever had. The Thai tea was light and not super sweet at all. I don't usually drink Thai tea because every location is waaay too sweet for me, so I always pass on drinking it. But my coworker who directed us here said to try it and I am super happy that I did. I will literally only come here for the Thai tea - LOL. Don't get me wrong. I don't know what or how authentic Thai food should, but I will say this place has the same vibe and energy in their food that you would find in SF, over here. And I will tell you now, that we usually go to SF or a hole in the wall in Oakland just because everyone knows Contra Costa area doesn't have much options for Thai. The Thai basil stir fry dish was good, but I would have preferred the chicken not be in the form of crumbles, but bigger pieces. More Thai basil leaves too. Delicious Thai food! Quick date night with the hubby. We ordered fried squid, pad thai fried chicken, duck curry, pumpkin curry, coconut rice and dessert coconut ice cream with fried banana. Fried squid was good, lightly battered and most of the flavor was in the onions and peppers. I liked it my husband said it could use more salt in the batter. Pad Thai was delicious noodles and flavors were perfect. Duck and pumpkin curry were amazing. Nice kick to it and paired nicely with the coconut rice. I am impressed! This is now our go-to Thai place in Concord. We've been trying a lot of Thai places in the area, but none has really hit the spot. The best one we've tried was the Thai place across the street from this establishment. We're glad that we finally tried Koon Thai. The Tom Yum is tasty, and the chicken that came w/ it wasn't dry like in other places where I feel like they just drop a chicken. The Satay Chicken was yum! You can really taste that grilled flavor and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Pad See Ew is my other go to Thai meat and it is tasty! Flavor is great and next time I order it, will definitely ask for more eggs - since I love eggs . The ambiance inside is light and has nice decor. The employees are also friendly. Craved Thai food for dinner so I chose one that had good reviews and good photos. I wanted to order basic dishes to have a foundational sense of their food. Went with the tom yum (sour soup) with shrimp, medium spicy, cream cheese wontons (ordered on a whim because my husband was curious), mango curry with shrimp bc I wanted a stew and the larb gai because it's one of my favorites. We were going to order the Thai chicken wings but on the photos, they just looked battered and fried with sauce on the side, nothing special so we refrained. The larb gai and the wontons came first and as hungry as I was, the larb gai was perfectly tangy. We demolished it. The wontons were just cream cheese inside and plain. No crab meat, just cream cheese. I blamed my husband for ordering some lame ass appetizer with nothing but cream cheese. The soup came. Looked good. Tasted flat but was disguised as spicy and hella salty. Each spoonful of soup made me think of how bloated I would be the next morning. Eh. Might have been better with chicken but oh well. By the time the mango curry came, I was close to full and done. I opted to pour the curry on my rice and eat it like that. It was very good but would order it with a stronger protein next time instead of shrimp. The curry was on point that I started dipping my spoon into the pot just to have it like soup. It was our first time at this place so we opted for dessert and went with the mango with sticky rice. Delicious and beautifully presented. It was really quiet (weekday) and we ordered the fish cake appetizer, the pra ram with beef and the curry noodles with chicken. The fish cake was good, with the sauce having a little bite from chopped jalapenos. The pra ram was just okay - the peanut sauce was a little weak and the beef was really chewy. The star was the curry noodles, which featured both chewy noodles in the curry "broth" and crispy noodles on top. This was a great dish with the different noodles in one dish. Food is super yummy! My favorite are the fried cheese balls, favorite appetizers. I usually get an iced Thai tea but they seem to be a bit to sweet for my liking(I'm not huge on super sweet drinks so definitely personal preference here). I typically get the eggplant dish with a side of rice, delicious! When I'm craving something a bit sweater as a dish I get the pad Thai and you can't go wrong with it. I do feel it is a bit pricey compared to other Thai places I've been to with same quality. If you order out, be sure to ask for utensils and sauces because they don't at it without a request. Ordered take-away from their website yesterday for the first time. The ETA was 50 min. which is unusually long. I decided to show up in 30 min because I didn't want the food to wait for me. Turns out the food was ready. Got the whole fried fish with sweet sauce, veggie Tom Yum soup (small) and sweet mango desert. The fish was still hot and crispy when I got home 15 min. later. Ordered online through GrubHub for pick-up on a Friday night. The estimated wait was 1 hour. Good thing I had errands to do! I got a pad thai and curry noodles. Pad thai - It was more wet than the usual pad thai's I've had and it was dull in flavor. It looks and smells like a pad thai, and it fit general flavor of a pad thai, but it wasn't a "good" pad thai--it just passed. Curry noodles - It smelled amazing and was quite salty. I shared with another person and think it was good enough that way, or else I would've been too thirsty. Although, as I've said, it tastes the way it smells and I would honestly buy it in candle form. I use to live in SF now in concord. I also lived in Thailand for many years on business. I've eaten in many different Thai restaurants run by Thai folks as well as Chinese run Thai restaurants. I have to say this place is the far worst Thai place I've ever eaten. I order tom yum Kung soup it was water, lime, tomato, basil, mushroom, and shrimp. Very bland not much flavor. Chicken lard tasted like eating cardboard flavored with thai flavor. Then I ordered peneng curry sweet green soup. Thai chicken wing or Thai angle wings. Again tasted like cardboard. Thai people use to say restaurant like this is made for white American people. Well I guess that's true. Because everything was bland no spice and very watery. If you ever tasted Thai food it's far from bland. It's very flavorful tangy spicy and savory flavors. This place was non of these things. After $80 and a huge disappointment I regret even trying this place after realizing yelp is very bias and I'm guessing it's true what they say about yelp. You really pay for your reviews. I'm going to log on here in a week to see if they removed my review. If it's gone then what they also say is true. Yelp removes bad reviews if you pay them enough. We shall see. read more

We came here on a Sunday evening and it was not busy at all. They appear to do quite a lot of take out orders because the restaurant was mostly full of people waiting for their take out. We started with the chicken wings and I ordered the pad see ew. The food was mostly fine. It wasn't the best Thai food (I've lived in Thailand) and it wasn't the worst either (I live in Europe). But I've also found it's hard to mess up pad see ew. It was just fine. The chicken wings come with a good sauce. We also tried the tom yum soup and it was comforting in the winter cold. They have a check in discount that you should definitely ask them about after you've checked in and have the deal on your phone. Maybe next time I'll try take out. read more

I've dined at Koon Thai several times over the past 2.5yrs (including take out during Covid as allowed) and each time the customer service was friendly, polite and prompt. Upon each visit, I've always ordered the same thing: curry noodle soup-spicy. Sweet, spicy, HUGE serving, crunchy and soft noodles and just a wonderfully pleasant dish. This is a hidden gem. Glad we found it. We ordered my favorite tom yum and basil chicken. The soup is very tasty, infused with full flavor--Authentic Thai flavor. We've eaten from here before and didn't have the best experience, but wanted to give them another chance. Third time was not a charm. We ordered pick up well before their closing time. I was disappointed to open our order and not see any utensils or napkins. Okay, maybe it's just a slightly off day. I specifically ordered brown rice. They didn't inform us they were out. I opened the order to find a note scribbled on my box that said "so sorry". I have never seen any business sub an item and just write "so sorry" because they were out and charge a customer. In the future, just don't charge your customers and write "so sorry" on your substitute that no one asked for. We won't be eating here again. read more

Our go to Thai place has been Mai Thai 2- I wanted to take my niece to lunch there, but they are closed on Mondays. We saw Koon across the street- and affecting lunch specials- so we decided to try it. The food was good, and checking in on yelp saved us 15% off the whole bill. We liked our cream cheese wontons for a starter- however, we felt very rushed. It was served without side plates. We hadn't even tried it yet, when they brought out lunch plates. The soup came later- after the meal. Thai iced tea is good. We noticed every other table had linen napkins- but we were given paper napkins. Plenty of parking. Several people coming in from Grub hub for take away. I expect to try it again. Hoping the service feels less rushed next time. Great meal. I've known of this restaurant for a while but never quite made it in. Today's the day 90 percent of the Thai restaurants in the area are closed and Koon Thai Kitchen was open, so ... Happy to see San was serving, having known her from Siam in downtown WC before they closed. She is super friendly and welcoming - a great start to our experience. The front of the restaurant is covered with what looks like yellow/orange wisteria. Turns out they're representations of the Thai national tree (Koon). Very pretty and unique. Inside, the decor is restrained and open. And the menus! Rare I'd exclaim about menus but these are PERFECT. Each page shows a pictures of a few dishes along with a nice explanation of what's in it and what it's about. A picture is worth a thousand words and this is the first time I've been in a restaurant which really does it right -all the dishes are illustrated and there aren't too many. A balance in which you can easily find something that looks good and not get lost in a sea of choices. We had the pumpkin curry salmon, pad kee mao and mango with sticky rice for dessert. Portion size - very ample. Half my pad kee mao is waiting in my fridge for lunch tomorrow. The flavors were spot on. Wonderfully spiced and the ingredients were bright and fresh. Instead of white rice one can opt for purple. Yay! I loves purple rice. I asked for the spice tray and the spices came in attractive beaten metal containers, each with a nifty ornate spoon. Different from the standard glass cylinders. The four spice concoctions (standard set if you're familiar with Thai) were excellent. Clean and fresh tasting. My wife's chard was very nice. Just $7 and well structured. Paired well with the food. Absolutely we'll be returning. Prices were completely reasonable and the food was beyond reproach. Parking could be better. Kind of tight. Access from Clayton Road, if you're coming from Treat, involves passing Koon Thai on your left, then doing a 180 at the next light. If you're coming from Ygnacio you'd better check a map so you're prepared. It comes up fast and without much warning before you have to turn in. I should have taken more pics (sad face) but before I remembered for the entrees they already looked a bit frazzled. Sorry about that! read more

I usually love this place so I don't want to knock down their rating just for today's bad experience so I'm giving them 4 stars based on their service and usual food quality. I often get the Curry Noodle dish, which I ordered today and was super disappointed. They gave me a different noodle than usual and they were SUPER mushy and inedible, there was also barely any veggies, I think I got 2 mushroom slices and 2 baby corn pieces. For the price, this was incredibly disappointing. I probably won't return for awhile, hopefully they'll bring back the non-mushy noodles and be less stingy with ingredients because their food and service are usually great. read more

I am always on the search for different Thai restaurants. While looking for places to have dinner I came across and "new" spot which happened to be a Thai resto in the Concord area. Walking in, I noticed the place looked a lot familiar to a Thai restaurant that used to take its place. From the looks of it, it looks like a whole new management and restaurant took over. **PROs: New ownership and a slight revamping of the interior. Menu with lots of pictures and new Thai dishes I have never tried before. **CONs: A little slow in service, but this can certainly improve with time and more experience.
