I got the Hainan chicken laksa mee and the amount of chicken was pretty decent. The cuts of chicken at this place have always been moist and I have never had complaints about that. The noodle portion was also very generous. It almost felt like they gave me a refill, but it was all there from the start. If you dug in with chopsticks, you would hit noodles all the way to the bottom. This time the food came out super fast and the noodles seemed clumped together, which made it clear they were pre-cooked and sitting out. I honestly would not have minded waiting a little longer if they cooked them to order, especially since I came on a Sunday afternoon and there was only one other table. It should not have been hard to make fresh noodles, so that part was disappointing. The toppings were also just the chicken. From what I know, laksa mee should come with things like tofu puffs, tofu sheets, fish cakes or egg to give it a more varied texture, so missing those made it feel a bit lacking.

Haven't been here for awhile and we wanted some Malaysian food. There isn't many great Malaysian in Bensonhurst (there are some but not that amazing) and they all have a few things in common. Yummy but smaller portion sizes and expensive. Kookoo still have the same protocol as during covid. They bring a small basin of hot water to dip the dishes/tea cup and chopsticks infront of you to show cleanliness/sanitizing. Then using tongs, they pick them up and place it on the table to airdry while you peruse the menu. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I do wish they do a better job of cleaning around the table/seating area as the seats weren't as clean (pervious guests were messy) and flooring can be sticky/wet from spills.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They didn't have tofu satay or the roti tissue (they rarely make the tissue as it's more time consuming when they are too busy with service). Other than that, our meal was fine. No other changes there.

Have been wanting to try out this restaurant for years now and finally got to today! We arrived for lunch a little before 12 and had to wait a bit to be seated since it's a small restaurant and there were already quite a few people eating inside. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Tables are partitioned into booths, invoking horrible flashbacks of pandemic days yet offering more privacy for parties because you won't be bumping elbows with the diners at the table next to yours.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The server wasn't particularly friendly but was very efficient. This was the first time I've seen dishes, cups and utensils being cleaned with boiling water at your table before they're given to you. Also loved that they give you a huge stack of napkins instead of just one per person. Perfect for OCD folks like us!!! Roti canai- Enjoyed the flaky roti and flavorful curry. Note that like at other Malaysian restaurants, the roti to curry ratio is a bit off...tons of bread but very little curry. Satay beef- Beef was tender, crispy and flavorful. Satay sauce was good but a bit on the sweet side. Hainanese chicken- Chicken was moist and juicy. Came drenched in soy sauce with the spicy chili sauce on the side. No ginger and scallion sauce. Tip: order the Hainanese chicken and a side of chicken oil rice separately instead of the Hainanese chicken with rice to get the best bang for your buck. Indian mee goreng- Delicious peanut sauce and not too spicy. Loved that it comes with tofu that absorbed all the flavorful sauce. Overall, this place didn't disappoint. The food was solid and the prices are good as well. Definitely my go-to for Malaysian food at the moment!

Came here for lunch with the family. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is small so larger groups might be harder to accommodate.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered a bunch of dishes. The food overall was good. I wouldnt say its the best Malaysian food Ive ever had but it did satisfy my craving. The satay beef and chicken were really good with the peanut sauce. The chicken was tender and juicy. We would go back if we were in the neighborhood.

BLUF: OK, seemingly less heavily-sauced than other Malaysian restaurants. We visited Koo Koo Chicken for a quick lunch. Food: Generally OK (3.5 stars out of 5 stars). We ordered: - Roti Canai (印度面包): $5.95 ($6.48 with tax). Good overall, though the flatbread had a slightly rubbery texture. The curry sauce dip had some chicken and potatoes. - Hainanese Chicken with Rice (海南難肶飯): $10.75 ($11.70 with tax). I didn't appreciate the bony cut of dark chicken, though others might. The dipping sauce seemed store-bought instead of house-made. - Papaya Mango Shrimp Salad (木瓜芒果虾沙拉): $11.95 ($13.01 with tax). A large serving of shredded papaya and mango; light, refreshing, and filling. The shrimp were mostly, but not completely deveined. Other: The staff brings plates and utensils to one's table in a wash basin filled with hot water, to show that these items are demonstrably clean. We visited on chilly day, when it would have been more comfortable if the restaurant kept a higher ambient temperature. There is one well-maintained unisex bathroom where the vacuum cleaner and other cleaning equipment and supplies are also stored. Suggested tips are based on pre-tax subtotals, and start at 15%.

My friend's family is from Malaysia and according to him, this is the best Malaysian food in NYC (and NYC has so much good Malay food). Since he told us that, I've been wanting to try and we finally got to go when I was back visiting. So much was so good, including the bah kuh teh, fish curry (I wish I remembered the whole dish name because my friend ordered), and the char keay teoh.

Love their curry beef brisket. Best to pair with rice. Any leftover portion is going to taste even better for your next meal. Overall its flavor is slightly sweeter than I enjoy but still very good. Service is fast. Good value.

Curry laksa hainanese chicken dark meat

Didn't notice this restaurant all these years. Decided to go after someone recommended it to my mom. Impressed but there's areas of improvement. It's pretty small with only 5 tables. They have partitioning between each table, so less could fit. It seemed like there was only one man doing the server work but later on saw two women who just stood around on the side. Impressed that the man would rinse cups, plates, and utensils with hot water in front of you before setting the table. He also gave more than 1 napkin per person. The menu is quite neat too which is rare in the Chinese places around here. Small things that matter. I was only interested in having the Hainanese chicken rice. Parents ordered curry beef brisket and curry laksa Hainanese chicken. Hainanese chicken rice was better than expected. Their chicken is fresh and flavorful, but the meat could be more tender and skin can be more jelly. I don't get why Hainanese chickens here don't remove bones, but I don't like how they smash the bones and bone bits get all other the meat and in between my teeth. The rice might be the best chicken oil rice I've had in a while. It's flavorful with umami without making your mouth dry with strong aftertastes. They give a big portion of rice for all rice dishes. The soy sauce they use for the chicken isn't particularly thick and dark but tasted sweet like the type you add on cheung fun. They don't have ginger scallion paste here. Their chili sauce is not spicy at all, on the thinner side, bright and sweet. I paid extra to specify getting dark meat. The curry laksa Hainanese chicken had the same chicken as mine but without all the condiments. The rice noodle they give is the nicer type that's slipperier and smoother. Broth isn't anything special. Beef brisket was really stiff. Seems like my dad liked the curry tho since he ate all the rice.

Some of the best Malaysian food in the area, though leaning a bit Malaysian-Chinese fusion. Dishes were very enjoyable--prawn mee packed with flavor, stir-fries full of wok hei, and skewers grilled to perfection, making the higher prices feel justified.

Curry chicken that comes with the roti

My office ordered from here for a week day lunch. I got the nasi lemak which was very nice. The sides were yummy and there was a good portion of rice to go with the items. I also got an order of the roti which came with a side of the curry. It comes with a lot of curry for the amount of roti that there is lol. The curry was nice and thick. It had a lot of melted starch from the potatoes but I actually enjoyed that. Chicken was tender as well. The roti itself was pretty thin and a nice compliment to the curry. All in all, a nice lunch option.

I wanted to try their Nasi Lemak primarily, so I ended up coming to here for take-out. The Nasi Lemak was flavorful. The chicken was tender, curry blended well with the white rice. The crispy anchovies, cucumbers, and peanuts added a crunchy texture to the staple. In addition, it helped balance the savoriness of the curry and chicken with acidity, saltiness, and a little sourness to the dish. The sweet and sour pork was more on the sweeter side from the pineapple, so if you don't mind you could try it. The Hainanese chicken tasted quite well as well, the freshness and moistness stood out. They do include a dipping sauce for it if you want more flavor with it since it doesn't usually pack much flavor in this dish. I have also dined here before just casually getting fried rice and some other stuff, it can be busy at times but the service and atmosphere are decent. If you want some Malaysian food around this area which there isn't much, I would recommend coming to check out here.

Satay Chicken, Seafood Wat Dan Hor
    Vicky L.

Ordered the Roti Canai, Satay Chicken, and Seafood Wat Dan Hor. Both the Roti Canai and Satay Chicken was alright. The Seafood Wat Dan Hor was average and wasn't as flavorful. Came here on a Friday night. There was a bit of a wait but not too long. There is a bench in front that will seat few people. The tables are separated by some plastic to social distance. When the waiter came to provide us plates and cups, they did rinse it with water which was good. Overall, an okay experience.

Delivery - R1 Hainanese Chicken over Rice
    Sharon L.

Ordered for delivery from Kookoo chicken, and the staff was super friendly and delivered within 30 minutes. Kookoo is truly a neighborhood gem! The hainanese chicken here is one of my favorites. The skin was perfectly gelatinous, and the chicken itself was tasty without being too dry. Pair it with the sauces and chicken rice, & yum!!! We also ordered 2 roti canais, oong choy with belacan paste, and wat dan hor fun (stir fried ho fun with egg gravy). The ho fun was really really good, and had a good amount of "wok hei" to it. Everything was packaged thoughtfully for delivery, and still arrived piping hot. Total came out to about $72 for the whole order, but it was enough for 2 meals for 3 people. Their lunch portions of hainanese chicken over rice comes with a generous 1/4 chicken and healthy serving of rice as well!

I have been eyeing this…read moreIndonesian neighborhood restaurant for quite some time now so naturally getting the opportunity to finally try it was absolutely delightful. We opted for the 15 course dinner that samples through their entire menu. It is a perfect amount of food for two people and I recommend this experience very much. The meal starts with a cozy chicken and noodle broth soup which was so warming and comforting, just what the doctor ordered in this weather. The second round of food was two types of salad and a corn fritter. I loved the pickled salads as they had a nice crunch to them and tasted delicious. The fritters are a good size but a little bit greasier than I liked. The last round is where all the curries are brought out on a hot plate. There's shrimp, lamb, beef rendang, chicken, tofu etc. There's also white rice and skewers of chicken and beef satay coated in a delicious peanut sauce. Some of the curries I liked very much - like the fried tofu and the sauce on the shrimp curry was divine. Beef rendang fell a little flat for me as it wasn't as decadent, thick or spicy like authentic rendang is. The lamb curry had a sweet taste which I found a little odd. The chicken satay was juicy and delicious but the beef satay was rubbery and hard to chew and a weird texture. I definitely expect better from a satay skewer. Our server was kind and kept the flow of the food going. The final course is a little coconut pandan flan which was very very good but the texture is firmer than what I like. Flan should definitely be a bit softer and creamier. Either way it's tough to nail a 15 course dinner expertly but I do think if they made a few needed changes to the quality of food this would easily be a 5 star experience! If you live nearby, definitely give this beautiful cozy family run restaurant a try!!

Side notes: Family-run place, so if you're going to go here with a bigger group, call early to make…read moresure they have the dishes you want. Would recommend the Bakwan, the Empal Goreng, and the Sayur Santen the most, with the Talor Tahu and various Bakwan being very tasty. Rating is for the area (in Queens, this would be an upper 3 as being a milder but tasty Indonesian spot, but worse than Sky/Awang.) I have been to this small family-run Indonesian restaurant a handful of times since my old review back in 2022, and over the many years, I have found some dishes I have loved more than others, of course. From the small plates, I would recommend, as before, the Bakwan for $9, consisting of crispy corn fritters cooked pancake style with scallion. The texture of the dish is wonderful, and the dipping sauces, whether they be the sweet chili sauce or the peanut sauce, work well to help with the slight oiliness. The sate is also pretty tasty. Of the multiple types, the Chicken Satay was the most recent one we had (which is cheaper at $11,) but I think the beef one (for a buck more) is better. We also had the larger Sate Madura a previous time, which was also very tasty. Another tasty dish is the Talor Tahu for $18, listed as a seasoned egg omelete with bean curd, mushrooms, and veggies glazed with Indonesian soy sauce and shallots. The price might look high for a vegetarian dish, but it is quite large, and the mixture of vegetables adds a nice mix of textures, including a good amount of crunch. The sauce is nice as well, adding a slightly sweet flavor, and goes nicely with the soft omelete. One of the most recent dishes I tried here is one of the best, which was the Empal Goreng for $21, listed as sliced beef marinated in sweet Javanese spices pan fried topped with Indonesian soy sauce. There was plenty of beef, which was cut thin and cooked beautifully, with the flavors reminding me a little bit of lemongrass dishes from Vietnamese spots, outside of it also having a slightly spicy kick. There was otherwise some lettuce, and the dish was served with some achar/acar, an Indonesian (and insert ASEAN country here) mix of pickled vegetables including cucumber, carrots, and onions. My other favorite dish here is a vegetarian dish, which is the Sayur Santen for $18, listed as lightly battered broccoli and cauliflower in Indonesian herbs cooked in spiced coconut milk topped with bean curd and carrots. There is a nice mix of textures, with the batter indeed, as listed, being very light, with the cauliflower and broccoli still retaining some crunch. My favorite part of the dish is the bean curd, which absorbs the delicious slightly sweet, and lightly spicy coconut milk. Another group of dishes that tend to be good are the various Belado, a pepper mixture with various spices that is somewhat similar to a sambal. This is available with Ikan, or crispy fish, for $20, or with Terong, or crispy eggplant and tofu, for $18. The crispy fish was a bit less spicy the most recent time, while the vegetables retained most of the kick from previous dinners, so I slightly preferred the vegetables. If there was one part of the menu to stay away from, it would unfortunately be the various kare, or curry. The Beef Rendang for $21, or pieces of beef simmered for hours in coconut milk and spices, is just alright, being a bit too soupy for my style (as I generally prefer drier rendang in general,) with the spices being a bit too light, whether it is the coconut milk or chili. The same can be said for the $19 Kare Ayam, which is also a bit too mild for my liking. From previous memory, I would also not recommend the Ayam Goreng, or their spiced fried chicken as it's a bit dry. The Nasi Goreng, for a variety of prices depending on protein, is also just OK. The dish listed as Indonesian fried rice with protein, scrambled egg, and protein was $18 in our case, for a chicken/ayam version. The portion was plentiful, but it partially lacked the wok hei I associate with this dish. The egg is nice, and there was enough chicken, but it was also a bit too plain. Speaking of light dishes, they have given us the Pandan Coconut Pudding for $7 a handful of times. This is a lightly flavored pudding with a very mild floral (from the pandan) and coconut flavor. Due to the texture and the light coconut sweetness, it reminds me a bit more of some kue you can find in some spots, such as Lady Wong and otherwise. It's a decent final bite. Outside of one particular part of the menu, I have liked this place every time I've been here. The food in general is pretty consistent, outside of maybe the spice level in a dish or two, but this is more expected in a casual spot such as this one. I'll go back again, probably in another few months, and sample more of their dishes. The rating is for the area, as it would be closer to a 4 in Queens, but I would still go back.

I'm a big fan of Kaya toast but honestly quite disappointed with the Kaya toast here…read more The Kaya toast comes with a thick slice of toasted bread except I don't think they make the Kaya toast to order. When I picked it up, it was already room temperature. It looks like it was prepared ahead of time instead of the other Kaya toasts I've had which were prepared fresh with the bread still warm. The thick slice of bread was also quite stale. Despite only consuming the Kaya toast about 1-2 hours after picking it up, the bread was not fresh at all. Appearance wise, it looks like a generous portion of Kaya jam but when you open up the sandwich, there's actually not that much Kaya. Most of the Kaya looked like they were pushed to the edge creating an appearance of a fuller sandwich. The butter was also not the usual thick slab of butter I was used to seeing. I do have to say that I do think their Kaya jam was quite delicious. It was not overly sweet and has a good coconut pandan flavor. I also tried some of their other sweets. The pulut tai tai which is a steamed sticky rice and comes with a side of kaya jam. It's just ok, the kaya jam is carrying most of the flavor. I was really excited for the kuih talam but it was quite surprising for me. I like the sweeter pandan base but the coconut milk layer was way too salty. I know that's how the dish is supposed to be served but it was quite confusing for my taste buds. I think the pandan base by itself is good but it's not sweet enough to balance out the saltiness of the coconut milk layer. The ambiance inside is quite casual. You order at the counter first and then pick up your food. You also clean up after yourself. I'm a big fan of these casual environments but the food was a big let down. Overall: the sweets and signature Kaya toast left me disappointed but their homemade Kaya jam itself is quite delicious.
