My family and I were planning on getting hotpot for dinner but the wait was too long, so we stopped by Hainan Chicken House since it was nearby. The food was pretty good! I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the Hainanese chicken, it was my favorite of the two chicken dishes we ordered. The roasted pork was also very good. It tastes different from the Cantonese roast pork that I am used to, but it is very delicious in it's own way. I occasionally order it for takeout when I'm in the area. I also liked how it came with three different sauces for the chicken. The interior is quite cute and endearing, and the staff were nice.

Three Meat Combo with Chicken Rice.

Damn, I wanted to love this spot more. First of all, the restaurant is modern and clean. We were the only ones there on a Saturday afternoon, but the place filled up by the time we were done. We decided to order the Three Meat Combo with Chicken Rice ($16.95) and Char Kway Teow ($16.95). Unfortunately, they were out of the Curry Laksa for the day. It's cool that the meat combo came wrapped up in banana leaves and brown paper to keep with tradition. The three meat is a great option to try all the meats if it's your first time, which also comes with three sauces and a soup. For the meats, we found both the Hainan chicken and roast chicken were a bit dry and mostly bones. You definitely needed extra sauce for these, but they did happily provide extra when requested. The pork belly is flavorful with a sweet and savory note without bones, so easily the favorite option of the three meats. I'm a bit indifferent about this dish despite it being their signature item. Although the rice was also flavorful, it was a bit too sticky. On the other hand, we did enjoy the char kway teow a lot more. This was super flavorful and filled with various meat and veggies. It seems funny that the best dishes here isn't in its name, but the noodles and pork belly instead. It's a solid spot, but nothing I'd go crazy over.

Green mango salad

I finally got to try Hainan chicken house and I went during the afternoon and caught their lunch deal. I ordered an order for the Hainanese chicken, green mango salad, curry puffs and Malaysian milk tea. The green mango salad was okay, it was just covered in a sesame kewpie dressing. The puffs weren't flakey like I thought it was going to be, but more of a harder shell. The filling was tasty and it was pretty packed inside. The Hainanese chicken plate was cutely presented. My meal was wrapped in paper with 2 balls of rice, an egg, chicken (white meat- which I prefer more), and soup. It comes with sweet soy and chili sauce to dip in. I felt the rice was lacking flavor but everything else was just okay. The Malaysian milk tea was very bland and watery, this was disappointing.

Nice little spot in the area that has a nicer ambiance than those in the neighborhood if that matters to you. Food was decent and is great for lunch. I was definitely thrown off with how they served the entree but everything tasted decent. Wasn't too happy with the curry puff because the taste was lacking and it didn't come with a sauce (too dry without one). The chow kueh teow was good.

It's alright. Glad to check off that bookmark tho. Came for an early lunch around 11:30ish... broke bread with my fellow peeps before the NYT crowd (literally as the clock strikes 1pm, a sea of Gweilo). The bench seatings are a bit uncomfortable when you have height differences trying to find a common spot - "arm reach to table". The decor does remind me of like food centers in Kuala Lumpur... nice touch. Service is minimal - menu, order, brings you the food & drinks. Self service for tea & water. Clean bathroom for Asian eatery standard. Food: -Signature Hainan Chicken (cute bundle but why create more waste? Can't be recycled...) - 3/5. Skin is not silky smooth like the version we had in Malaysia or Singapore... had a better version at LYK in Irving Plaza. -Two meats (Hainan & Char Siu) - rather have my regular roast pork. - 3/5 -Curry Chicken - my son says it's very watery, lacked curry flavor... and wish it had more kick. - 2/5 -Nasi Lemak - this was ok, husband enjoyed it, says it had good flavor. - 3.5/5 -Chicken Satay - meat was tough, not tender. Wouldn't get again. - 2/5 -Ice Malaysian Milk Tea - this was basically water down milk tea, as if you got it from any bakery, not what I expected. - 1/5. -Flavor oil rice for the chicken rice - these were fragrant and probably the best thing we had. - 4/5 (lol yea, it comes with your chicken). Total bill was about $115 w/ gratuity for a family of 4. Wow, inflation or this place is quite pricey... not sure if I would spend $17 on the combo again but the chicken rice for $14 is I guess pretty standard nowadays.

My friends and I went for lunch Sunday afternoon and there was no wait. The food came out fairly quick. The hainan chicken was alright, bit dry and the Hokkien mei was a bit too sweet according to my Malay friends. My favorite was the Char Kway Teow and the variety of meats they gave. The char shiu was sliced pretty thinly and tasted how it usually does and the prawns were flavorful & crispy. Overall everything can be ordered family style but a little on pricier side. There is also only a single gender neutral bathroom for customers.

Awesome authentic style of Vietnamese hainan chicken place in Sunset Park! Have a wonderful lunch meals options with only $12〜$15 Very soft, amazing authentic dishes. You can also choose Roasted Chicken too. Comes with enough options of rice and 3 different kind of sauce. Get an extra ginger and scallions! They suggested pretty good :) Kind and friendly!! Will come back soon x

House Hainan Chicken with Chicken Rice

Love how the rice platters come wrapped in paper! Pretty sure we got the last portion of pork belly at around 8pm Fri night - others around us were out of luck when they tried to order it. Pretty fatty meat but still really good, perhaps better than the house Hainan chicken. Even the side of choy sum was v tasty, and of course the char kway teow as well.

For a restaurant that puts their Hainanese chicken front and center, I found that I actually really enjoyed their other dishes more. I found the chicken ($13.50) to be a little too overcooked and dry for my preference and it lacked that silkiness and juiciness a properly poached chicken has. The broth and rice it came with was fairly flavorful (and I loved that it was shaped into a ball before serving just like in Malaysia and Singapore) and I liked the assortment of sauces provided too. I really liked their curry laksa mee ($14.95), as the curry-based broth had so much depth of flavor and the various noodles provided a lot of texture for the dish. I will say that the portion was a little smaller than I expected, but the curry absolutely blew me away. I would also recommend the Hokkein mee ($16.95) which was a tad overseasoned with the soy sauce for my taste but also was deeply satisfying and hearty.

Meat combo with rice

The sorta run down interior and lack of customers on a Friday night had me second guessing my decision to come here, but thankfully, it was not a letdown. I got the Hokkien mee and it was not bad. Very saucy and flavorful but it felt like something was missing, so it still can't beat little nonya, an 8th Ave Malaysian institution that I grew up with but is long gone. My friend and husband both got the 2 meat combo with rice. My husband really enjoyed The pork belly and roast Hainanese chicken. It was different from Chinese style even though the restaurant had the meats hanging in the front like Chinese restaurants. And the combo with rice came all wrapped up so it was a fun experience.

HFC

Tried two different chicken dishes and unfortunately was underwhelmed by both of them. It's decent, but doesn't warrant a return trip for me especially since it's deeper into 8th Ave. Half Roast Chicken: while I loved the skin, the chicken in its entirety was rather dry, especially the breast meat. The thigh areas were better but still not silky or too tender. The sauces that accompanied this were pretty mediocre, with the dark soy sauce one being very sticky and goopy and the ginger scallion didn't taste the freshest. HFC: was really excited for the house fried chicken appetizer but it was served barely warm (we didn't go at a busy hour either). Battered heavily, which is fine, but not a juicy piece of chicken. I enjoyed the curry sauce on top though - had the chicken been hotter, I would've enjoyed this a lot more, but still dry like the roast chicken.

This was my first time going to Hainan Chicken House it is a small little restaurant but big in menu selections, good quality food plus friendly service! We picked up our dinner which was ready & warm ! We tried several different selections starting with the HFC fried chicken pieces with a delicious sauce the owner suggested we eat these while still crispy so ...We opened these in the car they smelled so good! Everything was packed perfectly and delicious. We ordered 1 pound of pork belly so tender and good with Chicken rice ! Two orders of Hakkien Mee which is broad noodles, shrimp ,pork, I think mushroom and all in a rich brown sauce it's just delicious and fills you up! Nice clean restaurant, Friendly service , Good food , will eat in next time! Street parking

Decided to try this place after watching Kaitlin Lavery's video on YouTube and seeing that it was #72 on the NYT Top 100 list. For the 3 of us, we ordered the following dishes. Crispy Fried Fish Head Mee Hoon - It was very peppery and savory where the rice noodles soaked up the flavor. Three Meat Combo w. Chicken Rice - It came with Hainan Steamed Chicken, Roasted Chicken and Char Siu Roast Pork Belly. The pork belly was my favorite. The chicken rice was so fragrant and delicious. 1/2 Hainanese Chicken - There was a beautiful glow to the chicken and they looked scrumptious. The taste was mediocre, not much flavor even with the ginger sauce and dark sweet soy sauce. Watercress w. Oyster-Soy Dressing - Always good to have some fiber to go along with the heavier dishes. Overall, the food met expectations. Service was friendly and attentive for the area and prices were very reasonable compared to the city.

I am always a fan of these hyper specialist places because I figure if you only sell one dish it must be really good. The chicken is tender yet light on flavor, so the included sauces (one soy based and one chili sauce) are a must. However the rice was delicious and fragrant, a complementary pairing to the chicken. They also included some chicken gizzards and liver if you are a fan of those, but for me I could do with or without. Overall a solid place and worth a repeat visit in my book.

It didn't take very long for the order to be ready. The poached chicken was very smooth, tender, and tasty. I enjoyed the flavor of the chicken by itself and dipping it in the dark soy sauce. It was a good portion and very filling. My husband got the roasted chicken and he enjoyed it. There are plenty of tables for seating at Urban Hawker.
