These guys were awesome! Kevin scheduled the move details, said they'd be there at 830am, and they came right then. Before the move, Kevin reviewed details of how much, how large, elevator, etc. Very well prepared, the big brawn of John and Aaron got everything removed from my old place and into the moving truck like they were playing Tetris: I couldn't believe how everything fit into that truck with room to spare! Very professional, many items wrapped in protective layers by them ensured no damage in transit. This masked, careful trio went above and beyond the call of duty for my move. They arrived a bit early, were very friendly and even solved a few problems along the way for me. I am disabled (I use a walker since my stroke) and rely a lot on my kids to help me. But about halfway through the move, my older son had a medical emergency that required EMTs ( a mover called 9-1-1 for me) and my shy , college-age daughter became the "director" (no problem -- they were so nice). All my antique furniture was wrapped and handled carefully. They did a bit of troubleshooting when my daughter's queen box spring was wedged in a narrow stairwell, unable to move up or down. ( They solved the problem and my daughter's bed is now safely installed in our new home.) Overall, they were just exceptionally nice and skilled. Everybody was masked; all my pieces were handled carefully; nobody had to stop for a cigarette break. The most time they took were breaks for bathroom or drinking water. I had lived as a single mom in my Oak Park bungalow for 15 years and I had accumulated a lot of stuff the years (grade school and high school for 3 kids) Plus, my ability to clean was hampered when I became disabled and didn't have enough money to hire professional cleaners. In short, my house was more of a wreck than usual. I was downsizing, but no one grumbled about my new place being "too small," even when they learned my new home had 2 bedrooms up a flight of stairs. ( I'm sure they were hoping I was moving to a single-story ranch house). Nope - still need bedrooms for my kids and maybe someday -- grandkids. At the new place, all the furniture was unwrapped from its coverings; all the beds were set up (3); all was done in half a day. Bravo, Kolovitz. When the movers came, exactly on time, they were very professional and careful and obviously knew what they were doing be it moving our piano, taking doors off to get a freezer into a basement that had an extremely tight doorway, or maneuvering a large item down the stairs from our old house and up the stairs into a our new house without hitting any walls! I wanted to give this place a great review, but I just can't. I'm not posting this review to be mean, but am writing it in hopes it can help Kolovitz improve their business practices. We quoted our move with three different local agencies. We were impressed by Kolovitz employee who gave us our quote and we ultimately selected Kolovitz as our movers since they had the most competitive rate, were professional and had great reviews. However, when calling to book our move date, we left a voicemail and called three additional times during standard business hours over the course of several days. Our call was never returned and no one ever picked up the phone. This was super disappointing as we really wanted to support this local business. But as our moving date got nearer, we needed to book with someone who could confirm our date and plans. We ended up booking our move with a competitor. read more

I hired Kolovitz because I was moving to Oak Park (it's local for them) and I was really worried about hiring movers since every large moving company seems to have both a ton of good and a ton of terrible reviews. Since these guys are local and locally owned, I figured they'd be more accountable and I'd heard that they hired local guys for the movers. When moving day came, we got a crew of 4 people. All of them were indeed local 20somethings (3 from Oak Park and one from Berwyn), no day laborers. They all knew what they were doing and worked steadily loading the truck down 2 flights of stairs. They weren't rushing, but paced themselves well. Even so, they were totally soaked with sweat by the time the truck was loaded (4 hours). After an un-clocked lunch break, they arrived at our new place and unloaded in just over 2 hours, making sure to ask us where we wanted things, especially the big furniture so we wouldn't have to rearrange it ourselves. One thing I liked was that they charge by an hourly rate and use 15 minute increments. They were honest about the time they took for lunch (45 minutes I think it was) and only charged 45 minutes for travel time when I think it probably was a bit more. At the end of the day, our stuff was moved safely and without hassle and we had no damaged items. I highly recommend Kolovitz for anyone worried about their moving experience. read more

These guys are the real deal. They're based out of Oak Park and will charge you for the travel time to and from which adds up. They have a 2 hour minimum which is standard. The movers were nice, whenever they weren't sure about how I wanted something they asked, never assumed. They sent 4 guys for my move (I just moved from one floor to another in the same building) and the owner even came out for a little while to help. I had 4 rooms of furniture and 40 boxes/bins of stuff and it took them just under 2 hours. The guys who work for them have been with them for years, not just day-players. Wonderful guys! They took everything, even plants in boxes w/o lids. They kept asking, "Do you want us to take this?" And I'd say, "Sure!" They carefully wrapped every piece of furniture, treating my furniture better than I do. At my new location, they placed everything where I asked them to. Don't call this mover and expect to get your date. We have a closing date May 20 and called them in mid April to ask for May 13th, which they confirmed verbally. They called me this week to ask if we could move our date to accommodate another customer. I was in a meeting so told them we could be flexible but needed to call back to confirm. When I called back, they had given away the date to another customer (the 13th) and had no other dates until after Memorial Day. Now I'm stuck with no mover and a mad scramble. On top of this, there is nothing but complete denial from the owner Kevin--he does remember me calling to reserve the date but conveniently doesn't remember I told him it had to be by the 20th. He remembers calling me to see if i could move from the 13th but doesn't remember that I said I would call him back to confirm. So, apparently this is all my fault and no responsibility of his. So, if you like to work with a business that doesn't honor their commitments and doesn't listen to what you are telling them, Kolovitz is perfect for you! read more

Moving is never easy, but Kolovitz made it almost fun - great, friendly, trustworthy crew, who packed and moved us. They'd ask for directions (should we take this? where would you like this?), asked if we needed help moving things around/repositioning them in the apartment, and the way the storage facility was organized is wonderful (labels out, the stuff we wanted near the front at the front). Had a fine experience with Kolovitz in our 3-bedroom house move. Although contacting them did include a bit of phone tag, I found the moving team to be very professional. The crew were on time (came about five minutes early, in fact), were careful with our valuable items and worked efficiently. The guys were polite and friendly, and even pointed out some things we'd otherwise forgotten to move (like our garden hose). They didn't have some of the added fees that other movers gave us in their quotes (like a fee for an extra truck or wardrobe boxes), and the move came in under the estimated quote because the guys finished an hour early. The movers arrived promptly at 8 a.m. and began wrapping furniture in protective sheets. They worked tirelessly hauling our possessions down three flights of stairs to their truck and were very careful not to damage any walls on the way down. The entire process took a little more than three hours. They were going to use the back entrance right off the alleyway at our new place, but due to the extreme cold as of late the gate was completely blocked by ice. While most of the stuff they managed to get through the front door they encountered a problem with the couch and bed. The front stairwell was too narrow, so one of the guys worked for over an hour melting and breaking up the ice that blocked the back gate. While I'm sure this is not part of the job description they did it without complaint. In the end the move took longer than anticipated at no fault of Kolovitz Movers. They were professional, friendly, and worth every penny. They made our move that much easier, and for that we are grateful. We will definitely be calling on them again the next time we have to move. read more

After pondering the high recommendations from a family that has been using Kolovitz Movers for many many years, I Chose them instead of a previous moving company that was Amazing! Having said that, I also highly regret my decision. Making the moving date was not unpleasant, but I was confused at the tone and style of conversations trying to arrange the date. I should have known then to listen to my gut instinct. Without boring you with my "Big Moving Day", I'll get straight to the point...The movers were on time, friendly, and obviously enjoying their job (which is wonderful). The first stop was my storage unit with several large items, and then we moved on to my apartment for the remainder of my items. One of the movers (I believe his nickname is "the big story" because he has a story for everything- and he really likes to stop and tell stories opposed to moving items) arrived at my apartment and literally started DIGGING THROUGH MY DUMPSTERS, collecting items as he was headed to the dump after my move...Aside from being playful with each other, there were moments where he was leaning and getting comfortable on/with my belongings which made me slightly uncomfortable. The end result was two nice dings in my brand new painted walls (which required repair on the sheetrock), a broken handle on a vintage piece of furniture (that was supposedly broken before grabbing the handle- NOT), and it took almost an hour longer than quoted (note-we traveled all within 3 miles of the moving facility home and I was given a "high end quote").
