Conveniently located by the creek, the food here is excellent although the prices were high. We ate here twice on this trip and the mixed Sushi/Sushimi plate was fresh and varied. Wife had the potstickers and stated they were also great. Service is a little slow but waiters are attentive and they have many specials. A reservation is recommended especially on weekends. read more

This used to be the best sushi spot in town, then it got weird and changed owners or something, and then got better about a year ago, and recently the quality has dropped off again. I've always liked going here with large groups and ordering $500 meals for us all, but the last couple times I went, we didn't want to finish our orders cus they just didn't taste good, even though we have ordered these same dishes many times Over the years. About 7 months ago I had my last amazing experience here whwre everything was Spot on More recently I've had to wait almost 30 min after I notified them I was done, to cash out, and was charged for something that wasn't brought to my table, but paid for it anyways cus I didn't have anymore Time to wait. Not sure what is happening here... but it is chaos... couldn't find our reservation, service is terrible and food not much better. Waitress made so many mistakes. No apology. In fact tried to imply it was our fault. Brought essentially all $300 worth of our food at the same time. Very bland sushi... this place used to be good but it is a shell of its former self. overpriced for what you get - essentially fast food sushi with subpar service. Also they insisted we had to sit outside under heaters despite us watching the entire time we were there open tables inside... made no sense. read more

We have been going to Kobe since we moved to southern Oregon over 11 years ago. They have a great sake menu and their sushi is the best we have found in the area. We love to go sit at the bar and have some drinks and eat dinner. The owner seems to always be their and works very hard to make sure we have the best service and always recommends sake that she thinks we will like. read more

Omg this is my new favorite local restaurant! There is so much yummy and unique things on the menu for a vegan! Also gluten free! I was shocked about all the excellent reviews after I took my family for dinner. the waiters are very friendly and the fish is reasonably fresh, but that is where it ends. the Sushi chefs were not well trained, only one Japanese American chef with his baseball cap on backwards. Not one slice of the sashimi was cut as the next. 12 slices of salmon and hamachi thrown into a large bowl, terrible unesthetic presentation with a Shiso leaf and a single flower petal tumbling like in a poki bowl. The sushi rice in the rolls was ill prepared, grainy and of displeasing flavor. An insult to the city of Kobe and the fine art of Sushi preparing and culture. My son tried to comfort me afterwords by showing me the utube movie "Cowboy Sushi", which sums it up. Our sushi chefs hands were about as nimble as the actor's in the movie. We popped into Kobe for dinner a little after 5 pm on a Saturday. Even though we didn't have reservations and there were only two waitresses on the floor, you'd never know it. We were seated right away and our waitress got our order in quickly to beat the larger party orders. The menu offered some really interesting and unique items. Both the drinks and food were great. Such crap. Called on 12/21 @ 5:53 pm to make a reservation for new years eve 12/31 (monday) at 7 pm. Person who took reservation said someone else called and wanted to make reservation for new years but said tuesday, apparently. Called tonight 12/31 to confirm my reservation and they told me there is no reservation for me anytime on the book between 6 or 7, (my requested time) under my name nor my phone number.. They said they are extremely packed tonight, but when i showed up at 7, they could "try" to seat me at the sushi bar. Um, hell no. I reserved a table, wanted a table, and was told i dont have a reservation, and they cannot guarantee a table if i walk in. No apologies, nothing. I was at the store today and could have picked up everything to make my own sushi, or even fondue. Have been looking forward to this dinner since before fucking christmas, and one of the idiot hostesses either put me down for the wrong goddamn day, or gave my spot to a friend, or didnt write it in the book at all. At least I thought to call, if i had driven 20 miles one way to be told my reservation disappeared i would have been even more pissed. But alas... So pissed. This is complete bullshit, and they need to do something to fix it. So now i get to try to find food somewhere else, without a reservation. Probably fucking pizza from dominoes. Don't waste your time / money. If you know how well-prepared sushi should taste, you'll be disappointed. If you don't understand sushi or ready to wash it down with alcohol and spend a lot money, this might be your spot. Not sure if this place even has a well-trained sushi chef, I noticed few younger kids in the kitchen looking like part-time college students cooking. Sushi were small, rice not cooked fully, lacking flavor. Fish fillings tiny. Green tea tasted like tap water. One star goes to outstanding grilled hamachi collar and another to genuine efforts of servers who seemed dedicated, but frankly weren't exceptional. My previous review was 5 stars they hit all the points. Tonight everything was off to some extent. The tempura was dense and greasy, and the sauce was way off. The sushi was small and thin and they put gluten filled crab in my wife's GF fresh crab roll. Now she's sick which will probably last a week. Idk they had young girls in the kitchen that couldn't have had enough experience in there life to really be the blame. The new owner is allowing this one excellent restaurant to drop off. My friends and I were seated at an outside table on the patio along the tree-shaded river. Our server soon greeted us and placed a bowl of edamame on the table. We reviewed the menus, and ordered a bottle of the "Hou Hou Shu" sparkling sake ($22). Our server informed us that it was a small bottle; we were okay with that because we really only wanted to taste it for the novelty. Well, it was Delicious! Slightly sweet and effervescent, it was a perfect aperitif. We kept emptying and refilling those tiny sake cups until the bottle was dry. :D We also ordered a bottle of the local RoxyAnn Winery Viognier that went perfectly with our first course of Rock Shrimp Tempura on greens. The shrimp were topped with a creamy spicy sauce and were mighty tasty - we finished the large bowl, including the arugula! Next up were two sushi rolls: the tiger roll was crab tempura, cream cheese, and avocado topped with seared salmon and chili mayo, and a veggie roll with asparagus, mushroom, and cucumber. The veggie roll was fine (asparagus was crisp and flavorful), but the tiger roll was really good. That plate was finished quickly! The hit of the meal was the Yellowtail Ceviche. Oh.My.God. We were loving it so much we almost ordered a second portion! The ceviche was a simple combination of fresh fish, pear bits, cherry tomatoes, slivered red onion, and avocado, but the salty sweet marinade was very complex. mmmm We spent at least ten minutes discussing the ingredients, and wondering if we could recreate it! Tuesday was our last night in Ashland, or I'm pretty sure we'd have gone back and ordered that ceviche again the next night. LOL Our server kept up very well with our table - clearing dishes as needed, topping wine glasses, and was friendly and helpful when asked about menu items. Worst sushi I think i've ever had. The last time I went here was about 6 years ago and it was amazing, great sushi and really great drinks. (Their menu changed and they didn't have any of the drinks they used to) Ive recommended it to so many people as my past experiences were amazing and the atmosphere is so pretty. Yesterday was my birthday and we decided to go, I made a reservation and they put us at the very first table walking in which sucked. Talking about just food; the beef ribs were dry and bland. The pot stickers were literally the highlight which is sad when i was most excited to have sushi. The sushi rolls i had were super tiny and constructed very poorly; my sons sushi roll wasn't even rolled tight and kept falling a part and made it really difficult to eat. I love sushi and in the 20+ years of having it Ive NEVER had a roll where there was any fish bones, I picked out probably 5+ and stopped eating it entirely. Not sure what happened in the past 6 years but it was so disappointing. Im giving 1 star based off the atmosphere and chicken pot stickers alone. Everything else scored a 0. read more

This is a nice place with good ambience and good service. We went there last night for the first time and can say had a good time overall. However for any restt review food has to have the most weight. The menu and dishes seemed well concieved but execution was poor. Potstickers were underdone and so had a raw shrimpy smell. Sliders were good. Sushi - I am tired to judging sushi as 'not bad for this area'. If I was doing that I wud probably give 4 stars. But the fish wasnt fresh. The knife work and skill seemed 6/10 at best. For sushi the freshness of fish has to be 10/10, and it may be aceeptable at 9/10. Anything below is substandard. I dont know if it was just a bad day and we got the last of the fish before the next shipment came or what, but I did not enjoy the sushi. To be fair, duck spring rols and kobe sliders were good. We stopped here on the way to an evening performance at OSF. We didn't want to eat a huge steak dinner that would leave us feeling sleepy, so sushi proved a good choice. Loved the Yakuzo roll, the Hamachi roll and the Kamakaze roll. Don't miss ordering the shrimp and veggie tempura. It was a very generous portion. The waitstaff were friendly; the service was good. A quiet intimate little place a bit off the beaten path... I can see how this place would be jumping on a weekend or when the patio is open in the warmer months. Service was welcoming and attentive without being pushy. And I always love a place that can keep my water glass full! The menu had a lot to choose from, even for someone who doesn't eat fish! We started with cocktails, which were varied and many to choose from. Then ordered a little if this and that. My husband had an Oyster Shooter, which he enjoyed, and the seared scallops, which he said were excellent but he couldn't stomach the mushrooms they had plated with them. I tried them and they were extremely acidic. He also had the Kobe Sliders which he said were very Blue Cheesy... and were his favorite out of what he ordered. I got the duck "potstickers" which were actually fried eggrolls with a nondescript sauce. They were ok.. but nothing to write home about. Next, the Korean Shortribs, which were really good. A few of the pieces were a bit tough, but most were tender and they were all tastey. The portion was overgenerous, so I shared, and my husband remarked that he liked them better than anything he'd ordered. But, my favorite of the night was the Crispy Cheese Roll. Sushi rice, cream cheese, jalapeno, and avacado wrapped in rice paper and tempura fried. Combined with the Shortribs... excellent! And more than enough to share! This was a wonderful Ashland dining experience. A beautiful setting, right on the creek under a canopy of green, and with a tasteful and modern decor. The sushi is incredibly inventive and well balanced. The tempura was crunchy and each veggie cooked perfectly (and an order of tempura is HUGE). The cocktails were heavenly, and really unique. We really enjoyed our server Quinn who made the evening all the more enjoyable. We hope to be back the next time we are in town. read more

I usually just go eat at the bar for the bar specials for rolls. Hamachi and tiger rolls are super nice, rice is done right, ratio of rice to stuffings are perfect. They've had bomb uni every time I go as well. Can't go wrong! read more

Stayed nearby for a night, hotel recommended and sushi sounded good. Checked in, gave name and 20 minute wait. Was seated after 20 minutes and did not have anyone check with us to take an order for over 25 minutes. The shrimp and vegetable tempura and edamame were good. An hour and 1/2 after being seated, which was over an hour after having our order taken, a couple who was seated after us were served their sushi rolls. I got our waitress' attention and stated if our sushi hadn't been started please cancel it. Rolls were to us in 2 minutes. Just ok sushi, ordered the southeast roll and two very plain custom rolls which had extra items in them not ordered. Waitress did take back our check and made an adjustment, discounted overall bill. They were very busy, which I have a lot of patience and understanding for, although the service we had was unfortunate. read more

We've had great sushi in San Francisco and Tokyo, and Kobe could hold their own either place. This was our fourth visit. The Darru, White Dragon, and Sunset rolls were excellent. Our teenager added Chicken Gyoza and the pre-teen went for Yakitori - both very good. Kobe (pronounced Kōbay) has a classy, intimate vibe. Reservations are a must, as the seating is limited. The menu is enticing, and offers an intriguing array of items, even if you're not into sushi. Our server was attentive, and even after the initial delay of getting our drinks, was fairly quick. I was disappointed by the food. It was presented beautifully, and artfully. The flavors were just kind of a miss for me, and mostly fell flat. Lobster tempura was a one bite thing for me. I did not dig the chili mayo...little flavor, and overpowering mayo greasiness. My husband did like this, and ate all of it. Duck spring rolls, again, meh. The vegetarian "sushi" rolls were good, fresh, but again, there just wasn't a flavor punch. I wasn't a fan of the Japanese fried chicken either. One piece made me feel fairly "heavy," although it did taste better with a bite of the accompanying dressed salad greens. What I did taste? A LOT of sugar and salt. I prefer ingredients to shine, but these two elements are used when the ingredients can't hold their mustard by themselves. Our cocktails were very sweet. I like a fairly sweet drink, but the syrup was heavy here. The sonomono (cucumber salad) was like a syrupy bread and butter pickle dish, not close to the Japanese cucumber salad that you'll find elsewhere. Kobe is decent, and most Americans would probably dig it. My guy is a fan. I like veggies and real flavor, not fried greasiness (I do appreciate fried foods when they're not heavy!), salt and tons of sugar. read more

There are vegetarian & gluten-free options, and of course, tasty cocktails to make every person in your party happy. When we come to visit Ashland for the festival, we make sure that we stop down to Kobe for dinner at least on night. Fresh and delicious, my mouth waters just thinking about it as I write this. Our order is pretty similar each time we come: ZEN Vegetarian Roll - Butternut squash tempura, cucumber, avocado, red bell pepper, wrapped with soy paper topped mushroom salad, garlic chips, balsamic reduction sauce - $9 GARDEN Vegetarian Roll - Steamed spinach, cucumber, bell pepper, topped avocado, jalapeno - avocado sauce - $10 (2) Vegetarian Miso soups (1) Wakame (seaweed) salad and... a craft cocktail to wet the whistle! We normally sit outside in the back, and the ambience is quiet and special. I wanted to point out that the last couple of times we have been here, our server was MAMA. She is always very sweet and makes sure to ask if we want the vegetarian miso based on what we order...without us having to even ask! Wow! It was a 2 hr Long wait for food that is over priced and was cold by the time it arrived to the table. The non communicative staff with horrible service.
