We tried a couple rolls and ramen before an evening Britt show. The sushi rice in the rolls was not seasoned with enough rice vinegar. It detracted from the flavor and made it feel one-dimensional. The ramen broth was also watered down and lacked complexity. The Japanese ramen came with chicken that was dry and overly-charred on the edges, tainting the broth flavor with bitterness. The Korean ramen was better, but lacked the more aggressive spiciness I've had in other Korean ramens. Lastly, I don't normally knock places for small issues like this, but as soon as we poured the soy sauce in one of our dipping bowls, we saw a dark hair float up to the top of the sauce. In the grand scheme of things, this didn't help. Unfortunately I won't be back. read more

I love this place! It was the first sushi place (and restaurant) I went to in the valley, back in 2013. Been coming back ever since. My favorite thing to get there is a Chirashi bowl with the spicy sauce on the side. The fish is always fresh and there's such a wide assortment in the bowl. They also have fresh wasabi Recommend you go give them a try! I only go for weekday lunch (Mon-Thurs). It gets busy for dinner/weekends. There's only limited street parking. read more

I dropped by Umi Sushi tonight for the first time ever, an hour and a half before closing on a January Wednesday, and was seated right away. I knew what I wanted as I checked out the menu ahead of time and everything I ordered came out very quickly. The service was great and I enjoyed being seated at a table even though I was dining alone because they were not too busy tonight. I ordered the raw oysters appetizer and the oysters were great. I wish the seasoning wasn't sprinkled on them and the dish came out with just the ponzu sauce as the server described as the seasoning takes away from the oysters' flavor in this case. Good to know for next time. Even the lemon slice had seasoning sprinkled on it so I didn't squeeze the juice this time. Sashimi A combination was generous - you will see in the photo that for one of the three varieties of fish, I was given an extra slice, which I appreciated, but I did not realize a sashimi combo of nine pieces would only have three types of fish in it. That's not usually the case with sushi restaurants and I wish I knew that ahead of time. The server clarified that the bigger sashimi platter, Sashimi C, would feature the most fish varieties, which does make sense. I just expect a $21 nine-piece sashimi entrée to warn me ahead of time I'm just getting three types of fish. It was otherwise fresh and good; miso soup is included with this entrée. For next time, I will make sure to ask for the pickled wasabi to be left off the plate as its juice reached the daikon and the fish slices and I did not want nor need that spice there. Presentation was great. Service was great. My review is a four star because of the lack of variety in a sashimi entrée, and is value-based. read more

This sushi bar is one of my favorites in Southern Oregon. It doesn't look very special on the outside, as it sits in the historical district of Jacksonville. But once you're inside, it feels just right for a great meal. The place isn't real big, but for small parties of 4 or less it's perfect. The wait staff is super nice and the chefs and kitchen help are on top of their tasks. But most importantly, the fish is always super fresh and tasty. I've had most of their rolls and lots of sushi nigiri. I can tell you that I've never been disappointed in anything they served. My favorite is tuna, and they do it great. I visited Umi Sushi for the first time on a rainy day for lunch. Even with limited seating there were tables available in the additional side room. The building is charming and historic with nature wood accents throughout. The overall atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. The staff was friendly and helpful, frequently checking in and offering anything we needed. The prices here are average for sushi with a price range that fits all. I would have understood if some orders were sushi, and some were hot food. But this was not the case. In addition, the waitress forgot to put two of the orders in. Those two people opted to just eat at home after sitting at the table for an hour and 45 minutes. The food was mediocre. On our recent trip to J Ville we decided to give Umi a try for dinner on a Friday night. The place was busy but we were seated quickly at the bar. We ordered three specialty rolls and a sashimi app, along with a bottle of sake. Everything was served within 15 mins of ordering which surprised us given the crowd! Fish was fresh and our rolls were pretty tasty, but we did notice a lot of the rolls were filled with that imitation crab mix which isn't our fav. First time to visit, and it was so good! Recently relocated from SoCal, so expectations weren't super high. But the sushi was top quality - fresh and flavorful without smothering in sauces. I live in Jacksonville and I love sushi, that said for the second time I've had a bad experience regarding service. My daughter and I made our order, she ordered a beverage along with myself. My drink was brought and then our food. After eating for a few minutes my daughter realized that she never got her drink. At that point she said "well forget it" when we received the check and I noticed that we got charged for the drink she didn't receive. Yes, we got charged. Upon exiting, I noticed that she never asked us if we were done and didn't remove our plates. I don't like to be picky but last time I ate there, my order got messed up somehow and my family was done with their meal before I received my order. The food I have no complaints about. Countless visits here. Tonight's was the best by far. Has always been great but have to admit service and food quality took a little hit for several months in 2019. What I've noticed? My last visit November 2019 was with a chef I didn't recognize and whose creations were lazy. And the servers were lagging. Disappointed we didn't return until tonight. First thing I notice? The really good chef is back and the servers and line cooks are different. Had to wait a couple minutes for a table, full house, two young ladies serving. And these two were rocking it! Totally on top of hustling thru organized kaos. Cleared a table as quick as they could and treated us great for whole visit. The kitchen and servers got our food to us in a very timely manner. And the food was just beyond outstanding. Raw oyster special was amazing. Calamari, the best we've ever had there and it's always been great. Tonight's was a different presentation as well. Wonderfully done dish! The seafood Udon noodles was another new presentation and absolutely the best version I've had here. It's so worth the little extra wait it can take to make it up for you. Loaded with great seafood. My wife said her roll was excellent, to the point she didn't want to taste my Udon noodles and ruin the lingering aftertaste of her Mt.Everest roll.
