I ordered Sapporo Miso Ramen & my girlfriend ordered Tonkotsu. She rated hers 2.5/5, stating it doesn't have much flavor. I'd rate the sapporo miso ramen 3/5. The broth was delicious, everything else was mediocre. Expensive and disappointing. I asked the waiter what the $60 sushi combo boat for 2 people was like? He talked it up and said it was sooooo much food, more like for 3 people. I said ok great, cause we are hungry. I confirmed it came with miso soup, salad and rice? He said, yes if you want it? Like why would we not want it, we are paying $60. The combo is Chef's choice and was supposed to be a combination of Nigri, sashimi and rolls. We were excited to see it. I didn't ask for anything specific, hoping to be surprised with a few new to me things. Shockingly, this is what we received: 1 boring and cheap California roll, 1 deep fried roll that had flavorless cooked tuna inside, 3 pieces of salmon 3 pieces of tuna, and 4 pieces of Nigri, 2 of which was a repeat of Salmon! Wow...such a boring and lazy combination of options with zero variety, and nothing different or interesting!! This was supposed to feed 3 people? Boy our 3rd person would have starved. We used to love this place and everytime we came to Medford would come get lunch here, last time we came around two months ago it was disappointing, we brushed it off and decided to come back in today, me and my +1 walk In to an empty restaurant, a table of two is seated and you can tell that two tables recently left because the two waiters were busting the tables, I ask to sit at the empty bar and they say go ahead, when i approach it's completely dirty so I ask the waiter if he could wipe the counter for us please, he brings out a freaking Lysol wipe(I work in the food industry this is so not standard) and wipes only where I am to be seated, not my partner. we sit down and start looking at the menu and I watch this kid go get a rag and wipe a table and didn't bother to MOVE THE DRINK MENU off the table as he wiped it down!! After someone ate there! We got up and walked out. Hopefully we can come to appreciate this place again but that employee needs a class on cleanliness and I couldn't do it! read more

The restaurant was mostly filled with when we arrived but we were seated quickly. Staff were attentive and the food arrived appropriately fast and hot. We used a free gyoza check-in coupon but were told that corporate is no longer encouraging posts on Yelp. You can find one, according to management, on Google reviews, however. The gyoza was my favorite dish. Soft and crispy with just the right amount of filling, the gyoza were a great complement to the sauce. One criticism of the Yakisoba noodles was that they came with a hefty amount of seasonal vegetables compared to the beef. Overall, the flavor was good. The teriyaki chicken was a good dish and the Korean ramen tasty and very filling. I thought medium heat was the perfect amount with enough spice to make my nose a bit runny but not too much to sacrifice flavor. Shinsei Sushi has changed its menu and recipes with the result of a significant improvement in some of it entrees. There are more varieties of ramen and more vegetables have been added. The teriyaki chicken is a large portion of sliced chicken and veggies cooked on a platter that is served sizzling-hot to the table; the entree includes miso soup, a great salad with a house dressing and a heaping bowl or brown or white rice. read more

Disappointing dinner @ Shinsei Sushi in Medford, OR. I noticed their low Yelp score and read through some reviews, but thought, "How bad can someone mess up a Bento Box?"... FYI: If you plan on dining here, USE THE LEFT DOOR! I did not realize that there is a very small, inconspicuous paper note on the right door to "please use other door" and it slammed a little after I entered. I felt bad about that. On a good note: Service was excellent. The waitresses were very nice, friendly, and attentive. Cucumber salad was fresh & delicious. Edamame was warm & nicely salted. Luckily, these two appetizers filled me up enough for my last meal of the day. The disappointment was, you guessed it, in the Bento Box... I wouldn't call myself a true sushi enthusiast, but I do enjoy a decent California roll. It shouldn't have a flaky pink cream cheese consistency for its 'imitation crab' and that threw me off for sure. I ate a total of two pieces, the second confirming that I did not like it whatsoever. The Teriyaki chicken was undesirable as well. I found myself searching for good pieces here and there. It was tough, chewy, and not cut up appropriately against the grain. The chicken was slightly dry. 3/5 - Yakisoba: pan-fried noodles sautéed in sauce, sprinkled with sesame seed. I should have read the description a little better. It was literally a container of noodles. The flavor wasn't even that great. 2.5/5 - Spicy Spider, Spicy Tempura, and Medford Roll: these were all decent. I can't help but keep returning to this spot. The reviews about their ramen truly reflect reality! They're playing in a whole different league with their ramen, particularly the broth--it's wildly addictive. I was also quite impressed with their sushi! We ordered four rolls, which were more than sufficient. The fish is fresh and flavorful, and the rice portion, which many places tend to oversaturate, is perfectly balanced and appropriate here. Our favorite Sushi place in the valley. They are quick with food and service. Food is always fantastic.

ALL the Covid precautions are in place: masking, gloves, social distancing, plastic dividers between customers, condiments served individually, etc. I called ahead and the staff told me that they CLOSE closer to 8pm on weekdays (not 9pm as listed on the website). We ordered the Family Boat of sushi (10 rolls + miso soup) for $109.95 If you ordered the rolls individually it would cost $119.50 (a savings of $9.55). Literally Sushi served in a wooden boat vs on multiple plates; no additional veggies or anything special, just a bigger plate. The Love Boat of sushi (6 rolls + miso soup) for $54.95 is a savings of $3.75 if you were to order the rolls individually. The sushi was ok. A good variety, BUT only 3 of 10 rolls were tasty enough to order again. The other 7 rolls were *eh* and certainly not anything that I would pay $8-$11 per roll again (closer to $5-7 value, california roll, spicy tuna, etc). There was NO ROLL that we tasted in the combination that is worth the $15-18 price tag (as listed on the menu). The place was surprisingly busy with take-out orders at dinner time on a weekday (I overheard lots of bento box orders, not so much sushi/sashimi). Servers were doing their best. We had to request refills of water and hot tea. Server forgot the wasabi and ginger for the boat-o-sushi. We noticed that we had to ask for everything except for the chopsticks. An a-ok place for sushi happy hour, just not in our top 5 based on taste, value and service. The service was great! The chicken katsu and chicken teriyaki dinner were good, but when I go back I will probably only order sushi because it was amazing. Sake suggestions were great. The restaurant is small and intimate, but if there is a baby that continues to cry 4 or 5 different times, its disrupting to every single table because it is so close quarters. Saw the happy hour menu online and was tempted to make the quick drive there to get the value dinner. I went with the happy hour "Sashimi and Nigiri Combo H" with gyoza. The sashimi and nigiri were outstanding, but even at the happy hour price of almost eighteen dollars it was not that much fish for that price. It was, however, delicious. The pork gyoza, recommended by the server, were great for the price, on the other hand. So for twenty three something dollars I had a lovey upscale-ish sushi dinner. The hostess and server were most welcoming and nice and the atmosphere around five thirty on a Thursday night was quiet and family friendly, which was nice, since I don't like rowdy happy hour places and came here for the sushi. I was alone, but since there were many tables available, I was seated by the window, which was a welcome departure from often being seated at the counter when restaurants get crowded. That said, last time here I sat at the counter and enjoyed chit chatting with the sous chef, so this was a second great meal here for me. read more

Went there last night and ordered the two item bento box with Alaska roll and assorted tempura. At first I thought the $31 price was a bit high but when I saw how huge the portions were it seemed more fair. Overall the food quality was pretty good. The salad dressing had a weird consistency, with solids and liquid, maybe as if it was a creamy dressing that separated and coagulated? But the flavor was fine. It was a bit busy with only one waitress, had to wait a while thirsty before getting my drinks refilled but the staff was friendly and hard working. It was too much food and I couldn't finish it despite being hunger, which is a negative. I looked around and saw that all the patrons were on the chunky side, larger than me, so maybe the large portions were appreciated by others. What a terrible restaurant! Our Softshell Crab Tempura Roll was hideous bordering on inedible. The crab looked like it had been fried a month ago and was almost too tough to eat. The Salmon Skin Roll was EVEN WORSE! The salmon skin had this layer of completely dried out meat attached so we felt like were chewing wood. My wife also had Yaki Udon: totally without any flavor. What a waste of time and money. I told the waitress that the food was terrible, and showed her the fossilized salmon and crab that looked like a doggie chew. The music was modern hip hop, not sure how that fits with the Japanese theme, but was offensive due to the subject matter while having dinner. We ordered our dinner, the Miso Soup was not warm. They left the Sushi in the window for about 5 minutes, then asked if we wanted it brought out before our other meal. When we got the Sushi, no Soy Sauce came with it. That was another delay. The Sushi itself was lower grade. The Korean Beef was presented well, but flavor less. I added Eel sauce and it didn't help much. I personally feel the meal was over priced. The sushi tasted fine, but it wasn't assembled very well, or maybe the rice wasn't made right. It fell apart as soon as you touched it. One of the rolls was supposed to be a spicy albacore. They brought a non-spicy version and argued with me that it was the right one. I didn't feel like fighting them on it. We also got ramen, which I was thoroughly unimpressed with. I got the spicy tonkatsu. It was very bland, and not as spicy as you'd expect. My wife's as bland as well. Normally you expect a soft boiled egg. They put a fried egg on top, and not even a runny one. I didn't like how much squash they put in it, seemingly to bulk up the portion. The chasu was an extra charge, and was just grilled pork belly. It wasn't at all what it should be. Both ramen were made with udon noodles instead of ramen noodles. Overall, very disappointing. read more

I really like this place and the level of customer support shows they are doing almost everything right. The addition of ramen some time ago is welcome. They also have a business-like approach to beverages. Their list of sakes is complete and enticing. The front-line sushi chefs are backed up by a kitchen which handles Asian cooked food. One waitress has been there 6 years - she is cool and serene and I've never see her miss a beat. Perhaps most rewarding is their fresh fish! Finding great sushi made from fish that's brought in fresh two to three times a week in Medford is tough. But this place does just that. As a tuna lover, theirs is very very good for the area. No, it's not the best sushi I've eaten in Seattle, Portland or San Francisco, but it's dam good! Ruby red in color, clean, tender and that subtle ocean fresh flavor. They also have a lot of creative rolls that are made to perfection. The house-made rice is also great. Nicely formed with a warm tenderness do important in a Japanese restaurant. The owners are Korean so there are some additional entrees known to be from that region. So all and all I would recommend this establishment. Service was attentive and kind. The one criticism I might mention is it can get noisy inside. It seems to be popular for young families.
