We were so excited to return and have dinner. Our chef was somewhat new and not seasoned showman but the food is what we wanted. Fried rice was just ok ( under seasoned) my wife's steak was cut into not bite size pieces , I cut her steak which was seasoned properly but had quite a bit of gristle running thru it. Lastly my teriyaki chicken was a burnt mass of bitter dry chicken , it was cooked after the bulgogi so maybe that was the burnt flavor taste. If I wasn't having surgery in the morning I would have talked to management but I was in pain and hungry as the chicken was inedible.Our waitress had to be found to get drinks every time , I felt ignored and to top it all off our chef made it clear Cash tips were expected and if you tipped on your card it went to everyone else. Service was not very good. We were seated at our reserved time, however it took an hour before they even started bringing food out. The waitress would ask us what drinks we wanted, what refills we needed, etc. She would forget to bring them and we were having to wait till she came out and ask her for them again. First time at Shogi's!! Highly disappointed! Waitress took quite awhile between asking us if we wanted anything other than water, and actaully taking our order . Chef came to our table .. was very polite! Starting with some jokes to get us excited .. made one very unprofessional joke. Eggs cracking tricks were pretty cool, until he decided to crack one clear up by the vents and as it landed on the grill, it splashed me in the face.. disgusting !! Food - i got the new york strip and added shrimp . Rice was sooo bland .... I had to put quite of bit of soy sauce to make it tast half decent. Mushrooms and zuchini were burnt ! Maybe the grill was too hot, but not good at all! Shrimp again, burnt and ZERO flavor!! Wouldnt have even thought he put butter or lemon on them if i hadnt seen it myself ! Steak- absolutely NO seasoning !! Not even salt or pepper! Literally just a peice of meat on the grill ! For our $46 plates, we should have just cooked the same thing at home on the blackstone! What happened to this place it used to be fun! Last night met up with a group of 12 for the grill, because some of us arrived early we sat in the bar to have a drink...Talked with one of the workers apparently the original owner sold to his son or grandson (not sure) the new owner tried to run it but saw it going down hill quick, at that point sold it again to the owners of another restaurant in town Pomodori's I believe.. And here we are.. Signature drink: HarrieCarrie (not sure on spelling) is now served out of a tap.. not good seems smaller and just bad, heard 3 complaints on that drink alone while at the bar.. Best Old Fashion in town was served with too much bitters and a cheap maraschino cherry.... Not good.... Beer taps are down to 3 now... no big glasses only pint glasses.. I get the pint glasses but get more servers to keep up! The food not even close to the same quality, meat was less quality fatty and very chewy, portions smaller, taste, not the same! No bean sprouts before the meal... the salad was the only thing the same. And prices went up! The Menu is 1/2 the size and no more specials.... The only thing it did have going was it appeared to be cleaner, paint and new floors in the building... I didn't see many of the old cooks.. On the good side, it used to be tough to get into this place... not now, they had tables open on a Friday night around 6pm! If you want to see how to ruin a great fun and good restaurant... stop in they are doing it! read more

Very great service (and show including family-friendly comedy) was the highlight of the entire experience. Fairly light decor as all attention should be on the grill! The food tasted okay - so the dips and soy sauce were greatly appreciated! We were seated with another party (to be expected) and overall everyone appeared to enjoy themselves. I've heard a lot of positives about the Shoji's experience growing up in Medford. I'm happy to say it did not disappoint. We had a large group and the chef put on an absolute show. He made an onion volcano for the little kids in the group and lit it all on fire. He was very entertaining and made the night a fun experience. I ordered the spicy tuna appetizer and it had good flavor, but wasn't the best roll I've ever had. We all ordered the teriyaki chicken and it was fantastic. I really enjoyed watching the chef cook all the food in front of us. Hopefully I can make another visit to Shoji's soon! read more

The "show" was half what it used to be. They tried to accommodate one persons food allergy, but fell short. All in All it was a mediocre experience at a fine dining price. We were over 40 minutes over being seated for our reservation which happens and is fine but no one updated us or said a word as to when to expect to be seated. Our server forgot our drinks several times which was soft drinks wine and beer - I was finally given given a 2 oz pour of Chardonney. The service was so bad that we thought we were being punked. They did away with the early bird menu and changed up some things but the food is still good. With that said - we were appreciative for the brand new chef doing such a great job. Building was freezing in the winter, cooks forgot several things, chicken took 35 minutes to be served. Cook said to have worked there for 10 years. Place over cooked our scallops, steak. Food is pretty good. My two issues are the constant, ridiculously long waits to be seated (even with a reservation you're waiting 30-45 minutes) and the cleanliness of the establishment. Dusty, dirty entry ways and waiting area. And the grease build up around the area where food is cooked is an extreme fire hazard and appetite killer. read more

Good Japanese style teppanyaki given that it's in Medford. Serving sizes- especially the rice- are large, bordering on too much. We ordered the chicken/steak/shrimp combo. Our food tasted great, and was perfectly cooked, though the rice could have used a bit more seasoning. Shoji's no longer serves their miso soup, which was disappointing. Awful experience from wait staff. The cook was the only one who semi saved the day and it wasn't his cooking lol it was all his effort. We ordered a chicken and steak after asking the waiter which one was a chicken breast because I don't like brown chicken meat. I also hate teriyaki and that was the only chicken that specifically didn't say teriyaki, it said a juicy sauce and we clarified with our waitress and she confirmed it wasn't. Then we ordered a shared plate. I had a stomach surgery and I can't eat very much. The steak was chewy, the chicken was not a breast and it was smothered in teriyaki sauce. I ended up paying 89 dollars for something I didn't eat and to top it off the waitress didn't tell us we would be charged an extra 13 for sharing, that price included two drinks. The cook was very charismatic. He put a lot of effort into entertaining us so that's why this place got any stars at all. The cook even got frustrated because we kept wanting drinks and the wait staff kept not coming and he kept having to ask them to come to refill even the water. He said everyone was new and training but I don't think that makes up for the incorrect information on an expensive meal, the not saying or listing a split price or not actually waiting on us. I was really hoping this was going to be a great experience given people's hype about the place, and I am willing to spend money like that on a GOOD meal, but it was not worth the price of the food or the serving experience. Extremely long wait just to get the food started as well and to even sit us when half the tables were empty. I think this place just has poor management, poor communication with customers, poor labeling and misleading on the menu and overall probably just not enough staff. Hi everyone, My opinion to get a one star, the business has to be non operational, filty, rude unreasonable. I read all the negative reviews. Some is just same o unjustified complaints. I really think we should just shut yelp down. We get unreasonable complainers that probably have a miserable life and not helping the yelpers out lol. Pros and Cons. For Pros I would definitely say the food is awesome!! I picked and ate spicy pork and fresh fried rice. They cook the food front of you. Looking for a good laugh, yes some of the cooks has jokes lol. Everyone is polite. Heads up if you come two or three people. They will sit you with other people. Mentioning all above with good food etc. It works out. I would say for cons, And this is normal for any favorite restaurants that's busy. Although we were seated right away. Wait time can take a while that the place looks like a medium capacity. The store fry in the grill was ok, kind of fun- but not anywhere close to benihana, back inn the Bay area- where we used to go. Here they don't even add any salt or pepper to the meats, seafood- it's so bland! The rice, needed at least 10x the amount of egg and onion, they only put the tiniest bit, how about some carrot, or at least some green onion also...? so bland! Also, how can they not serve miso soup?! The little salad was delish, so at least one yummy item-love the dressing! The cook overcooked our steak, as he kept commenting on it, how he's going to do it, over and over, but it wasn't medium- it was well done. DO NOT order any sushi!! The worst, dried up nothing really added to the dry rice -sushi we have ever had, I think it must be better from a gas station market!! They must have made it a few days ago, and let it sit in the fridge, dry and horrible... Should have sent those sushi rolls back, they were unacceptable! Don't order any appetizers! The help is lacking, you don't know who or where to pay. How this was voted number one Japanese restaurant, I'll never know! But then again, Medford is clueless as they voted Bamboo(which is so terrible) as best Thai restaurant, and it's not even a Thai restaurant!! read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Medford. Now that I live in the bay area I don't get to eat here very often, but when I come back to town I ALWAYS eat here. I have yet to find a better teppanyaki place than Shoji's. They make the teriyaki sauce in house and it is really good. The portion size is really large so I usually have enough left over for another meal. Sometimes the service isn't the best, but I come here for the food so that is okay. Teppanyaki style food is dinner and a show so if you're in a hurry try another place and come back when you have a little more time. Overall delicious food and a good value. read more

There is a reason they have almost a perfect 5 star rating with $$. It is the Simply the Best in it's class. The Lounge (bar) is a nice find. It is very nice and Quiet.
