Unagi hand roll: my litmus test, and Sushi Heaven passed with flying colors!

Well, one star off because we made a reservation, and then we got shunted to the window counter when people after us came in without reservations and got tables. That affected our service a lot as the staff often forgot about us. However ... the food was excellent. Highly recommend for that. Definitely will come here again and hope to get an actual table. It can get noisy inside, and there were some bugs on the window sill we had to keep out of our food.

Sashimi Appetizer (by itself) is $24

All of the prices have increased again by $2-$5 on each item. Still the best sashimi in the area, but the consistent price increases are making this place a special treat instead of a weekly go-to. Sashimi Combo is now $35. The pieces varied from a hearty slice to a oddly shaped cubed which was a fraction of the other slices. Still good quality, just getting to be out of the range of affordability for a weeknight dinner. The Guido roll was 8 very dainty pieces of avocado, cream cheese and macadamia nuts and rice for $12. It was for someone else. I would not order this. Cream cheese in a sushi roll? and for $12... it was ridiculously small, smaller than a store bought California roll *Hard PASS* We also ordered one of the "Specialty Rolls" for $22. It was beautifully presented and flavorful. Had substance, but so not worth $22; it was not at all filling for what was supposed to be an entree roll. Plan on ~$40 per person for basic eats (NOT including: drinks, tip or the additional 5% Ashland tax). Good Service, Quality ingredients. Portions are hit/miss. Still my go-to local place for Sashimi, but prices alone make this no longer affordable for a random weeknight.

Bento box of 2 items for $20. No rice with more salad.

Several tables have kids and youth because of the robot server. The young children have fun watching the robot bringing food to the tables. The owner is smart with the robot idea. It even sang a birthday song. The food is good and the waitress is friendly. The price of the bento box of $20 is a bit higher than expected in Ashland. But the sashimi is fresh.

In town for work. Location is a little hard to find as the sign is not noticeable if you aren't from the area. Small hole in the wall restaurant. Friendly staff. Miso soup was good. Overall happy with our meal.

Feeling a little lazy, and not wanting to eat too heavy, I searched for Japanese food and Sushi Heaven popped up. It's a cozy space that's laid out very well, and there were a number of people inside eating. I was hoping the sushi bar would be open but because of this dang Covid, only the dining room. So I ordered to go. They had my favorite Caterpillar roll and inari. I also wanted to try something new, and ordered the Pestopassion. The Catepillar was delicious and one of the best I've had. The inaris were not as sweet as some places and that was a nice change. The Pestopassion is a baked rolled and was soo good! Just the right balance of fish and sauces. I also had a seaweed salad which was very good. I look forward to coming back to try some of the other rolls, and maybe an entree too. The people are so friendly! I should've practiced my Japanese, but nihongo mada jozu ja arimasen. I have not been to any of the other Japanese restaurants, but this place is a slice of "heaven!" Domo arigato gozaimasu!

Updated in July of 2023 Good sushi, borderline unacceptable wait time. I ordered the chef's choice sashimi, which comes with a side of salad and a miso soup, as well as a tea. My companion also ordered an entree accompanied by the salad and the miso and a soda. It was 20 minutes before the appetizers (salad and soup) and the beverages and water were brought out, on a rather hot day. It was over 50 minutes before the entrées made an appearance. While I appreciate the staff being apologetic, and they are super nice, at some point I do believe a restaurant needs to let people walking through the door know that it will be taking over 50 minutes to get a sushi entree that requires cutting and plating but no additional preparation to be ready. Bringing water, tea, salad, and miso sooner and maybe not at once if a restaurant is that busy could have really helped. If staffing is an issue, the restaurant can always offer a shorter/limited menu. Again, the value for the money was a 5/5 just as it was the first time I came here. I will not return until I hear from other diners reviews that the wait time for food returns to acceptable levels and counter seating is back like it once was. Initially we were told to leave a number while the entire (yes, five seats!!!) sushi counter sat empty and occupied with takeout supplies and restaurant wares and the counter facing the street had three out of four seats empty, with one diner on the far right side. I asked to be seated there because there was no reason whatsoever to have two people walk the streets in 89 degree heat when there were multiple options to seat us. I don't know what's happening here. I was seated at the street window counter just fine last time I was there. I've seen sushi restaurants with less staff serve more people faster and not waste eight seats while telling diners they'll take their phone number and call when something becomes available. I welcome commentary from the restaurant on this - I really hope this was an anomaly of a night.

It's casual, fairly quick and good quality. For sushi it's reasonably priced and the service is very friendly.

Best sushi in town since it makes the fish the star of the dish unlike the other ones, owners are very personable and kind.

The chicken katsu was yummy, nice and crisp. The sauce it came with was good but our server James recommended their house made sesame dressing on the side with it and he was right...so good! I really liked the three star roll. It was nice and light. I love fresh lemon slices in sushi rolls which is why we ordered this one. I do think it would be even better if the rind were left on the lemon slices. Other than that it was really good and I'd totally order it again. The black widow roll. Fried soft shell crab with unagi. Soo delicious. The scallop roll was good. The scallop was really smooth and fresh. The only other things I noticed were: The wasabi had a bluish tint to it, which to me indicates food coloring so we did not eat it which was too bad because we love wasabi and it would've been so good with the rolls. I wish they would use a different wasabi without the blue coloring. I think a bell on the front door would be good to let employees/sushi chef that customers have arrived. Because its kinda awkward to stand there at the entrance waiting. So at least if there was a bell then the sushi chef could greet right away and let people know to sit. I also think some sort of electric doorbell that is attached to the front door but dings in the back outside to let servers outside know that customers have arrived so they can check back sometime. Because I know the outdoor back patio seating is much busier than indoor dining. When we arrived inside, we stood for quite some time before the sushi chef noticed and greeted and told us we can sit anywhere. And then it took awhile until someone came to bring menus because there were no servers inside. There was a lady who was already sitting at a table inside when we arrived and she didn't get a menu until we did. So she waited quite a bit. *and by the way these are not complaints about the servers at all* I know that it was busy outside and that people rarely choose to sit inside. And there's no bell or anything to let the servers outside know that there's people inside, so absolutely no fault to the servers. I just think there needs to be a better system put in place by management. Like if there were 2 servers, have them both dedicated for outside but as soon as indoor dining customers arrive, maybe 1 of the servers serves inside and then also helps outside when they're free? As a past server myself, these are just things I noticed and I think would make the business run smoother and make it easier/less hectic for the servers. Lastly, I think music inside would be really great. It's super quiet and kinda awkward vibes. Especially when customers come in and wait and it's silent. Anyways, the food was great and our server James was fantastic. Did a really great job despite being so busy. Super friendly, personable, and made great recommendations. We would come back. Just really wish the wasabi didn't have the blue food coloring.

It was also strange to add Korean dishes as well but I'm sure it tastes fine. I ordered the Poke and it was pretty good. I was happy with the portion and the amount of ahi tuna as well as the seasoning. There was seating outside by a creek but there was a large fire happening nearby, possibly in Medford and hot as heck and people were still out there. Parking was tight on a Sunday evening at 5pm but we were able to find some close by. Not a whole lot to handicap parking was available.

A huge shout-out to Kaylin, who consistently goes above and beyond. She is always smiling, genuinely welcoming, and happy to make great recommendations. They do not have on the menu iced tea, but rather than simply telling me they do not, she brings me a cup of ice along with hot green tea so I can make my own. It's a small thing, but it perfectly represents her approach to customer service. The sushi itself is remarkable, and the chefs clearly appreciate their customers. They routinely do little extra things that make us feel valued and create a level of service that really stands out. We generally spend around $100 for two people, including one alcoholic beverage and green tea, which I consider very reasonably priced for the quality of the food and service, especially in today's economy. The only thing which surprises me is that the restaurant often seems slower than I would expect. We've been on both Mondays and Saturdays, and I honestly don't understand why this place isn't packed. Hiro Sushi has officially become our new favorite sushi restaurant, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Exceptional food, wonderful people, and the kind of customer service that keeps you coming back.
