So folks, I have to be honest I've given this restaurant three tries unfortunately I have a chili allergy and every time when I've announced it, they've served me dishes with chili. ...Why does the chef need to put Tabasco in a cream seafood chowder? Is it because your flavors are so off, you cannot make anything tasteful? To further complicate the issue I went to the management staff and let them know. I'm having an allergic reaction to your fried chicken and your cream seafood chowder, why the hell are peppers in these products they're not listed in the menu, I let you know about my food allergy and you still serve me these foods . Your response was oh my God so sorry we have no control over what Chef Franco does. Chef Franco if you have any sort of decency, please list Chili's in your ingredients. Or find another way to find flavors... Just saying..... My waitress was not able to comprehend or understand the specials or the aspects of the food.... I really hope they can improve this. Back in Ashland so back at Larks, our go to there. This time, we had the sense to get a reservation. We both had the seasonal pear cocktail which was great. We tried the steamed clams as an appetizer and tried the current soup - potato leek. The clams were delish but the soup, while ok, did not have enough taste of leek for my taste. My son had the curry with rice noodles and tofu, reported to be a little bland. Ok, just did not seem to be up to the usual Lark standard. I had the market choice which tonight was rockfish. Really moist and flaky. The service tonight was a bit indifferent. Again, not up to the usual standards. For instance, I asked our server for the price of the market rate dish when considering it and she did not know. Ok, but she never came back with the info. Kind of like that. read more

The food was excellent, but the service was not. Our waitress Shasta forgot about us and we had been there over an hour before she came back to get our order. Almost an hour later we asked what was going on with our meals. Apparently the computer/printer was down so the kitchen did not get our order. But no one had checked on this. We had come in to eat at 6 o'clock so that we could go see a play at 8 o'clock. By the time we got the food, we were only able to eat the first two courses, very quickly, and we couldn't have dessert. It was raining so I opted for staying near my hotel which was convenient. I had a cup of the chowder, the soup of the day, and so worth it and so good. If you're reading these reviews, you care if soup and stuff is freshly made or not. This chowder was unique and freshly made. Loved it! It was the perfect choice to start on a rainy day of driving. For the main, I had the hangar steak special cooked exactly how I asked with sautéed spinach and a side of mashed, a nice way to soak up the leftover fresh pesto. Again, note the freshly made pesto for pesto lovers. So good and so grateful to finally get a chance to try this wonderful establishment that is always busy for obvious reasons. 3.5 is where we've settled. We made a reservation via open table the day before so when we arrived at 5, we were greeted and seated almost immediately. There were seats inside and out. We ate inside. I'm including a picture from our seat since I don't know what words to use to describe it. We found it comfortable. We were asked if we were celebrating anything so we let them know we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We heard them ask several people the same question and thought that was pretty neat. The specials were read to us. They had special drinks, a salad and a special with sole, as well as sole being their market fish. We don't enjoy sole so unfortunately, we didn't get the special or the market fish. We started with the lemon Caesar salad which was good although it had a bit too much dressing for me. We're used to croutons on our Caesar salads but enjoyed the bread crumbs. It was a great size to share before our main meals. Randy ordered the house capellini but didn't really enjoy it. The pasta was not capellini and he says if it would have been, it might have made it better. The noodles had sauce on them but no sauce was available on the plate so it was indistinguishable as a vodka sauce. It was dry like that. The skin on the cherry tomatoes was thick for him so he didn't eat those. I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and asked for broccolini instead of the carrots on the menu. The chicken was a boneless breast and it was quite flavorful and delicious. I had plenty of the bacon gravy which was also flavorful. I rarely eat fried chicken so it being so good was a treat for me. Randy loved my dish, especially the potatoes. And he's not a gravy guy but he really liked the gravy, too. Our server was attentive, refilling our waters several times and checking in to make sure we were doing ok. We did not order dessert but when our check came, our server brought a small plate with some dark chocolate pieces and a burning candle on it to help us celebrate. A special touch for sure. Pork belly starters! Highly recommend. Salty and savory flavors with a "sushi" construction. Best to counterbalance with a fresh salad. I had the lamb bolognese pappardelle pasta, which was a hit. The pasta is made in house. Broad, tasty noodles that are elevated from what you would get at home. The burger entree looked wonderful as well. Ambience was fine with standard service. Our family has celebrated Christmas Eve at Larks every year for over a decade, and it has always been an amazing experience. This year we called, at the same time we always do, in order to make a reservation. We were told that the restaurant had new management and that meant they were not ready to receive reservation requests yet. They told us to call back on a particular date, which we did. When we called, we were informed that the reservation issues still had not been resolved, but they took our name and number and told us when they ironed out the issues, they would call us to finalize our reservation. They told us we were the first on the list and assured us there should be no problems in getting our reservation squared away. After a couple weeks of not hearing anything, we called back to check in. Imagine our surprise to hear that they had already fully booked up for Christmas Eve. We explained the situation and they acknowledged that there had been a lot of turnover and probably one of the people who left had forgotten to pass the message on to the manager and there really wasn't anything that could be done at this point. We voiced our disappointment with how this situation had been and continued to be handled. The person on the phone acknowledged that we had a right to be frustrated and also made a comment that we weren't alone and that Thanksgiving had been equally chaotic and customers faced lots of frustration due to lots of similar mix-ups there too. The person asked if we were set on celebrating Christmas Eve on Christmas Eve itself, or if we'd be willing to celebrate on a different day. We said that our large party had made plans and scheduled accordingly for Christmas Eve, based off their previous assurances, and another day was not possible at this point. The person on the phone suggested that we could *maybe* be fit in for the last seating of the night. This did not leave us feeling confident in the restaurant, and we asked to have a manager contact us, and were assured we would be contacted by a manager later that day--the next day at the latest. It has now been four days and no manager has reached out. How disappointing to see so many issues before we've even arrived for dinner. We made the decision to seek reservations elsewhere to ensure that Larks was not the Grinch that stole our Christmas Eve. If you have reservations for Christmas Eve or Christmas, I strongly encourage you to reach back out and ensure that your reservations were ACTUALLY made. It sounds like they messed up Thanksgiving, and I would hate for someone's Christmas Eve or Christmas to be messed up by incompetence and an overall lack of customer service. read more

We have been wanting to eat here for many years, and finally made a reservation. So glad we did. The service was excellent, attentive, but not overly. The drink/wine selection was impressive. And the food choices were amazing. It also appears they use seasonal produce from the area. I thoroughly enjoyed my fried chicken over mashed potatoes and gravy, with gently roasted carrots. Larks was really nice restaurant with good service and good food. I sat at the bar and the bartender Samantha(?)(or Amanda) was really great, really friendly and good to chat with. At the recommendation of fellow bar patrons I got the fried chicken and it was very good. The skin on the chicken breast was nice and crispy but what made the dish was the bacon gravy they used. The potatoes and collard greens that came with it were not all that to me and everything needed a little salt for my taste but still overall good and I was pleased and satiated. Then for dessert I got the warm butter cake and omg it was sooo good, honestly didn't even need the ice cream that came with it, the cake itself was just so moist and delicious and the peach compote(?) was great touch. Almost forgot to mention that I had the maple nut old fashioned, I'm not a huge fan of old fashioneds but this maple one was definitely interesting, I'd say try it if you're an old fashioned kinda person. First appearances are everything, the room was bustling, it looked like a set from a movie. Bar staff were fun and chatty. So get Tim as a waiter, great conviviality exudes from his manner as he so eloquently describes the fish of the day (rockfish), we both order - only have him rush back to the table to say 'we're all out of it!). For the past 12 years, we have enjoyed Christmas Eve Dinner here as a family tradition. The food and service were always top notch, first class. That all changed this year. A few weeks before Halloween, I called as usual to reserve a large table (usually 10-14 people). I was told their reservation system was unable to take a reservation until the month before the event and would need to call again later. On Nov 1st, at 5:00pm (when they open) I called again. I was told they still were not taking reservations but would put me first on the wait list and would be notified when they started taking reservations. Having not heard anything is several weeks, I called on Friday after Thanksgiving. I was told they were sorry, but they were all booked up for Christmas Eve dinner, but could take our group a few days earlier. I was frustrated, but told them that was not acceptable. I asked how they could be booked when I was first on the list. She replied that obviously the person that told me on the phone previously that she would put me on the list, did not. She then told me they had just finished Thanksgiving, and it had been "A Real Mess". (I later had this verified from several people that had disastrous meals/service on Thanksgiving). I was then told they might get us in at 7:45, but they closed at 8:30. Getting a multi-course meal in that short of time was virtually impossible, let alone they would probably be out of all the good meals by then. I told the person answering the phone that I was not mad at her, but was extremely frustrated as this was a family tradition and I had followed all of Larks rules only to be let down by the lack of follow through. I asked for the restaurant manager to contact me. I was told the manager was there and would call me later that night or for sure Saturday. After no call Friday or Saturday, I decided to seek out another venue to hold a large group. We were very lucky to get a table at Peerless and look forward to supporting another venue this Christmas season. Wednesday evening, I received a call from Larks restaurant manager. She stated that she had been off of work due to being sick. (Which contradicts what the server on the phone had said.) She told me that I should have reserved my table online instead of relying on calling for a reservation. I asked how I would know online reservations took precedence over verbal reservations due to the fact that I had done so for the past 12 years. I told her since I hadn't heard from her as promised, I had made other arrangements with another local venue. She replied that it was probably for the best because Larks would rather not have my type of person frequenting their establishment due to my toxic attitude, What?? Although I was upset when they told me they had messed up, I made a clear point to inform the girl on the phone that I was not mad at her, but the fact that I had been lied to so many times. The manager said, "Well you made the girl answering the phone cry, so it's probably good that you don't utilize our restaurant". All of a sudden it was my fault for this whole disaster. How about Thanksgiving disaster, am I responsible for that mess up as well? I have since found out that there is a huge shift in the managing of Larks and that the quality that it was known for is faltering. It appears that our Christmas Eve plans will turn out for the best considering Larks diminishing quality issues. If you believe you have reservations for Larks during this holiday season, I suggest you double or triple verify your reservations, so you don't get Ebeneezer'd. read more

My husband and I were visiting Ashland for a few days and staying at the Ashland Springs Hotel. We had a tight schedule on the day that we arrived, so I booked a reservation at Larks for dinner before our show. I am very glad that I booked ahead, because the dining room at Larks was packed on a Friday night--at least until about 7:45 when most people headed to their shows. A full dining room did not detract from the phenomenal service. Sometimes it's the little things... like the food runner knowing who ordered which entrees. Our server created a welcoming and comfortable experience to set the tone for the rest of our trip. The wine selection at Larks was pretty extensive, so the husband picked a bottle Pinot Noir by Irvine & Roberts, a local estate winery. Our server recommended checking out the nearby wineries during our Ashland visit, including Irvine & Roberts (which we ended up doing thanks to him). We then started with a shared plate of prosciutto wrapped cantaloupe on a bed of arugula which was such a fresh and unique special for the evening. I then moved on to the caesar salad which had pickled onions as a slightly odd addition--maybe a good alternative to anchovies, but it was a little acidic for me. My main dish was the Tomato Capellini, and I was very impressed! The chili flakes added just enough zing to make the dish unique but not so spicy that other flavors were overpowered. The hubs and I opted to split a pistachio orange tiramisu which was amazing!! It was brand new on the dessert menu, but it was perfection! Larks Home Kitchen Cuisine is a wonderful option for an upscale dinner in Ashland that has a laid back and comfortable vibe. For my last meal in Ashland, my classmates and I were going to see The Full Monty, but wanted to do dinner beforehand and decided on Larks. What a fun experience! It is located in the Ashland Hotel and what an interesting place! You can feel the nostalgia as soon as you enter. Really fun drink menu and a very nice wine list. We shared the tartine and clams...both sooooo good! We also tried the gluten free bread and one of us had the house bread with rosemary. I ended up getting more of the rosemary because it really tasted good with the broth from the clams! I couldn't decide between the fried chicken, the meatloaf or the grilled pork chop, but I got the meatloaf since its their signature dish. Very tasty and loved the slaw and sweet potato mash. We also had to have dessert, and ordered the flourless chocolate cake, the lavender creme brulee, the butter cake, and the special strawberry pie. All very good, especially the ginger ice cream that came with the chocolate cake. It was a great way to end our school week! Larks is a great place to come to when you want to do something special. I think my review, had I dined in, would be closer to a four-star, but I ordered my meal to go as I was staying in the hotel and I wanted to eat in the room. Although the hostess was very friendly, I think my order was forgotten after it was prepared because when I got it up to the room, it was barely warm. That should definitely not be the case when transport was about three minutes. This restaurant is best enjoyed when dining in, so unless you're really craving something on the menu, just go with doordash. That being said, there are a ton of really great options within walking distance or driving distance, but for this meal, I just wanted something close. read more

Visiting Lark's for dinner, we ordered several dishes and shared them all family-style. All of our selections were tasty and beautifully presented, with the portion sizes being "just right". Good food, but not for price. Service was OK at best. Tried to stick us in a tiny corner slot, but once they figured I wasn't going to sit there, gave us a better placement.. The pork shop was very good food is amazing there the fried chicken was a little dry but it was good. Phenomenal!! Dined at Larks yesterday evening. Great experience. All the staff were wonderful. Ambiance was cozy, clean, and lovely. Dirty martinis and manhattans were best we've had, hands down. Rosemary butter and bread .... Yum! We each shared the grilled Caesar, truly wonderful. I'll crave that forever. We both had the halibut special... sensational! Delicious, Elevated Traditional American Fare I'd consider this elevated traditional American cooking (if you're from SE Ohio, like me!). When I say "delicious", I mean we INHALED our food. We shared the meatloaf and fried chicken. These are meals my mamaw made when I was growing up and it was nice to revisit them. It was especially nice to revisit them with so much flavor and nuance. The 1920's bar was a sight for sore eyes. I took off one star because service was disjointed but overall a great experience/meal. read more

We were very excited to come eat here as the reviews looked wonderful. The cocktails were very good and we were impressed. Their approach was to be extremely friendly. After we ordered drinks we asked what fish they had. They had none. It was a small menu with one pasta, one meat, one chicken and one fish. No fish which was what we wanted. The food was disappointing. I ordered a Caesar salad and added a grilled chicken. The Caesar salad was smaller than a sandwich plate and the chicken breast was 3 ounces. Definitely not a dinner salad. When the server came back, I asked her and she said oh that's a side salad!! we also had the flat iron steak. It was covered with a sweet sauce that it did not need. It read as palm frets with the steak, but it came as tiny shoestring potatoes not at all what we expected. Too expensive for what the food is. Go for a cocktail, though. read more

This lovely restaurant is located inside a historic hotel on the Main Street in Ashland, Oregon. It has a bright upscale looking interior. People dressed from collared shirts with slacks to shorts and t shirts. Let me start by saying the service was fantastic. They are both accommodating and not over servicing at the same time. The food was amazing. We were so full I didn't get to try the great looking desserts. We did have the meatloaf, southern fried chicken, 3 different kinds of salads, and their yummy bread (gluten free and regular). I know that Lark's has its fan base. Over the years, I've tried, probably too hard, to be among those fans. Yet, in the end I find myself thinking there are just too many great options in Ashland that are a superior overall experience by comparison. My first criticism is that the menu can be quite limited. In our last dinner there, we had perhaps 8 options to choose from, three of which included pureed Squash as a prominent flavor element. I feel if you're going to have a sparse menu, you probably ought to consider varying your secondary elements, especially with sides that can be a tad polarizing. My second point would be that on value for the dollar, Lark's comes up a bit short. I think $27 for meatloaf, or $25 for fried chicken is pushing things a bit too far. Please note, that both of these dishes were very good and flavorful. The execution and quality were fine, but it feels like you can get the same for cheaper, or better for the same price elsewhere. The same goes for their cocktails...again, well executed but feels like pricing is at a premium. Service was solid. No complaints there. Ultimately, I think you get charged a hotel convenience pricing uplift for what is fundamentally very good, though perhaps not distinctive food. Ashland has a lot more to offer, in a town that punches above its weight for great restaurant options. read more
