The food was outstanding. The flavor combinations are scrumptious and unique. These kind of flavor combinations leave you thinking about them for days. We have visited Peerless outside of the holidays, and I am happy to report that the food and service is incredible year round. They also have an excellent Happy Hour menu available. If I could give 6 or 7 stars I would. As is the case with many restaurants when I'm by myself, I sheepishly check in at the hostess/host stand and ask for a seat the bar. I do this to gauge reactions. And here, they were super friendly and accommodating. I took a spot at the end of bar and immediately struck up a conversation with the couple next to me. They had a burger that wasn't on the menu I had been given. Apparently there is a sort of soft opening before they open for dinner with a different menu. That's cool! I had about three hours until a Shakespeare show, so I decided for the full experience: Salad - I spent nearly the entire salad experience trying to decide whether I liked the dressing or the bright citrus of the grapefruit better. What was never in question was how tasty and refreshing it was. Crab and Melin salad. Appetizer - I wasn't sure what to expect with the Beef Carpaccio. Definitely my first time with this dish. But it won't be the last time. I probably ate it wrong, but mixing the arugula and cheese was very tasty. It disappeared quickly. Main - so it wasn't really a main, but the dish came at the recommendation of the bartender. The asparagus in the description was the selling point, but the potato dumplings reminded me of gnocchi. It was almost the perfect round up to a stellar meal. Drinks - My favorite cocktail is a prohibition style drink called a New York Sour. I think I like it because the red wine tones down the sweetness of the sour mix. I asked for one and after I finished it, the bartender asked how it was and admitted she'd never made one before. The roasted kuri squash was delicious. The best squash dish I've probably ever had. The waiter was friendly as well. Beautiful interior of the restaurant. Only reason for the under 5 star review is because of the smaller portion. I ordered 2 of the same dish and asked for them to combine it into one plate. The portion should have been larger for sure. Of all dishes that should have smaller portions it shouldn't be vegan food which is less calorically dense vs animal based foods. I feel the individual dish should be at least 50% larger if not 100%. Great experience besides the portion size though! read more

This was my first time coming here. I think because it was part of the hotel next door, I didn't think much of it but one of my friends wanted to go, so we met up here. The interior dining room is a bit dark, but interesting. We had a really nice table out on the deck. The cocktails were interesting and I ordered the refreshing Shrubbery. We also ordered the gouda fries, duck dumplings, and vegetable caesar. They were all a nice start to our meal. I ordered the sourdough crusted pork chop. It was a good size, though part of it was real fatty. The others ordered the fritters, which Kel liked, and Autonia liked her ribeye. We all thought the carrot juice cavatelli was really good. The service was attentive without hovering. I think she knew we were all catching up since it was the first time we got to see each other since last year. I can see why people love eating here, especially outside. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

We went to Peerless for our 11th wedding anniversary and overall it was a great meal. The oysters were fresh and the green chili lime juice is divine with them. The duck confit was a standout for sure. While we do wish we had made our reservation for the outdoor patio area, the decor inside is nice. It was a bit awkward how quiet it was when we were there though. With just us and two other tables in a corner, we could definitely hear each other's conversations. What a terrific experience! We arrived late into town and caught an Uber to the restaurant about an hour before closing. We were greeted with smiles, a fun attitude, and patience while we deliberated about drinks and food. Totally set the mood for the meal. The food was FANTASTIC! We ordered: the albacore salad, grilled asparagus and cucumber (who knew?!), yogurt with pickles, fries with housemade aioli, and, our absolute favorite, a savory cheesecake. So good I had to congratulate the chef, who says it was a fortuitous accident in the kitchen which they tweaked and kept in the menu. A MUST. On a roadtrip from Seattle to Calistoga, staying at Peerless Rooms next door - some notes: 1) we were running late - it's a long drive - they were super flexible about our timing. 2) greeting - really important, warm and welcoming. Kylie and Zach on point. Got quickly into drinks - we had a couple of cocktails -,one on menu, the other off menu. A+ results, we needed them! 3) menu had great range of choices, some specials also super appealing - good problem to have. Lu had duck breast, I took the Salmon from specials and a side of veggies. We got recommended a bottle of lighter local GSM too, was terrific. (Cowhorn 2021 GSM) 4) Food absolutely crushed it, prompt but not "quick" - just right. Enjoyed our cocktails. Plates arrived with beautiful presentation. Duck was absolutely spot - plated to perfection crispy skin seared to a charm. Salmon was perfect, moist flaky meat, crispy skin, umami flavours. Veggies were perfect match, not too much/too little. 5) Service was fantastic- Zach was charming, personable, great recommendations. Kitchen and Bar did him proud too. 6) we finished on a perfect palette cleansing sorbet and a couple of dessert liquids. In all a great ending to a great meal with fantastic service. I'm blown away at the elevated service, atmosphere, and panache offered at Peerless. It's always a mystery to me how the smaller sister city of a larger adjoining city can be so drastically opposed culinarily. Establishments like Peerless play a critical role in that equation--setting a very high bar. If I lived here, this would be date night without question. Let's start with getting in. They take reservations through Tock, which can be reached through Yelp. The integration is seamless, but ultimately requires an account to sign in. I find this off putting. Fortunately the old school method of a phone call still works. Leave a message with details and they call you back quickly. They offer outdoor, indoor, and bar area. I opted for a quaint table by the fountain. The right choice for a beautiful summer evening. The menu is compact but impressive. Apps consist of soups, salads, and a raw oyster special that rotates seasonally with what's freshest. I opted for the french fennel onion soup. This was wonderful and so packed with rich flavors. The fennel really adds a bright freshness that cuts through typical heavy feel of a traditional French onion. They had a king salmon special tonight which was tempting, but ultimately went with the duck confit--I'm guessing this is a signature item for them and for good reason. It was exquisite. A nice sized bone-in leg and thigh served atop lightly curried white beans with a fennel onion salad and caramelized shallot coconut dressing. The method of preparing was text book. Crispy skin, tender fall apart dark meat that just melts in your mouth. I will not soon forget this one. My only minor critique is the ratio of beans in proportion to the protein. An almost overwhelming amount of beans. Drinks consisted of an expertly crafted negroni and an amazing cabernet franc from Quady North vineyard close by. Both were excellent. Ashland is simply full of surprises. Peerless restaurant has to be one of the best restaurants in town. The cocktails are amazing and the seafood selections are fresh especially the oysters. What really makes them so great is the fusion of flavors. I had ordered their duck noodles and it was delicious. Fish sauce, if not added correctly, can easily make a dish salty. However the added chili honey balances the entire dish and not making flavor over power the other. From looking at their menu they continue to use fresh ingredients year round so what may be your favorite this season may change next season. Should you have room for dessert, I highly recommend their sweet corn ice cream and madelines. oh my goodness they were delicious. Upon arrival (after being told to promptly arrive at 6:30) we waited for about 10 mins while the restaurant looked barely busy. Our reservation was for outside and we were told that outside wasn't set up / available. So not off to a great start. The food & drinks were excellent, but one issue we had was the service. After being served we were not visited until we were offered dessert and the check. So all in all not a super fantastic visit. My husband and I had an excellent experience dining at Peerless this past weekend. We were seated near the fireplace toward the front, which was so cozy and warm. We're pescatarians, so we were thrilled to find seafood options on the fall/winter seasonal menu. I started with the hot toddy. It was perfect, and the tamarind added a nice zing to it. My husband had the happy hour Manhattan. We shared three appetizers (the kale salad, the grilled butternut squash, and the house-made butternut squash cavatelli. Then I had the poached lobster on frisée salad (an appetizer) as my main course. My husband chose the daily seafood entree, which was halibut served with sunchokes and picked onions. The food was all excellent! Highlights were the cavatelli, lobster and especially the halibut. We had a 5pm reservation and were attending an 8pm play. We sat and ordered an appetizer and cocktails. Our server asked if we were seeing a play and when we said yes, she said we should get our orders in quickly. We did and ordered wine to have with dinner. Our dinners came in about 5 minutes, our drinks weren't halfway gone. No wine delivered. I told the server we were not ready and she only offered to reheat the food. This restaurant is every bit as pretty as you see in the pictures! Wow! What a setting! The patio garden space is simply enchanting and we enjoyed every minute of our time here. The food was also delicious and enjoyable - we ordered many things and did a bit of sharing: the Red Buttes Farm mixed greens was a salad that was almost too pretty to eat! Loved the fries and the bread and the grilled cucumber appetizer. There is no bad meal here - the chicken confit was my main course and really was a star. But I think my son will always remember the cheesecake - clearly the best one he has ever had and will look forward to the next time we dine here. We all will! I enjoyed my glass of Sauvignon blanc. Our server was professional, comfortable, and friendly; our water glasses were never allowed to get too low, and before either of us finished a cocktail we were asked if we'd like to order another :-) Our food was both delcious and beautifully presented. I would have given this 5 stars but it took an inordinate long time for our entrees to arrive. Also the house salad of $13 was a total insult for the price. It was about 6 leaves of lettuce tossed in vinaigrette and a couple of tiny flowers and that was all. I would recommend not ordering that salad. But the silver lining is the entrees we're spectacular, delicious, well prepared and excited. There is a talented Chef in the Kitchen . Easily top 5 meals I had in 2023. Came here for dinner on Christmas Eve and was treated to such a stellar meal that was had many, MANY highlights. The restaurant itself was done up for the holidays, and it was festive! The service was stellar, our server was attentive and made sure we were taken care of from drinks to bottles of wine, and offering recommendations. The dungeness crab and avocado salad was a huge hit with the table. The crab was plentiful and the dressing was stellar. We really could've just had a second helping of this amazing starter. We also started with a scarlett carrot soup which was also stellar. Perfect for winter time and a savory soup that paved the way for an incredible meal. I usually don't order steak when out, but the steak au poirve looked incredible, and as you can see by the picture, it was a sight to behold. The steak was perfectly medium rare, excellently seasoned and the fries were salty and a great compliment. I got to try the duck noodles as well, which was REALLY tasty. The miso cheesecake, which was a recommendation, was truly a cherry on top. The lime maple cream and that burnt outer edge helped this dessert not be too sweet, but really scratch that dessert itch with a complex and sumptuous flavor. We went to dinner a few weeks ago at Peerless. We arrived early and had a cocktail at the bar. Lauren was the bartender and made creative drinks. She was a joy to talk to and was patient as we peppered her with questions about how she, and the chef, create the cocktail menu. She introduced us to two new liquers (Nixta & Italicus both of which we bought on our way home!). Try the Lost in the Maize!!! She was a significant part of ensuring we had a wonderful evening. The crab and melon salad was delicious and I could have eaten multiple orders of the shrimp fritters. I ate every bite of the duck confit and everyone else enjoyed their entrees. Kiley G was our server. When our friends arrived she immediately remembered them from prior visits and even recalled their orders. She was helpful in describing dishes and attentive throughout the evening. I'm sorry to read that others did not have a good experience with service as ours was stellar from the moment we walked in. When we visit Ashland again we will return to Peerless. read more

Hit or miss I guess Went back, I know, why would I, after the last time, but every year or two I go back to all the places in town, usually because of the company I keep, and this time we had pretty decent food. My friend's lamb shanks were the best he's ever had, and everything was decent. If the ambiance and food quality matched the service, and it was consistently this way, this place would be a lot better. The time before this episode of not peerless but okay, my friend, who enjoyed the lamb so much this time, had a dog shit experience. So more consistency would be a virtue It's hard to not poke at this place with a name that is so generally unfitting for the quality of the experiences I've had there. We had a very lovely evening here on Tuesday night. Their outdoor space is just fantastic. Sitting under the apple tree on the lawn on a summer night is so peaceful. It's a big space too so everyone is spaced out and it's not too loud. Love a place that is both fancy and you can take your party of 11 with 2 kids and still feel welcomed. Food is also great. The lamb takes the top place for the night. Soooo tender and flavorful and the macadamia breading paired so nicely with it. Absolutely worth the $$s. The seafood special cod was also quite nice. Juicy inside very crispy outside and the tomatoes and potatoes paired perfectly. Watermelon and strawberry gazpacho was also excellent. It's hard to mess up oysters - but they were also excellent. French onion soup - delicious. Steak tartare - also delicious, and the sauce that went with it was very nice. Also surprisingly large amount of it for an app. Squash with Brie and shrimp with tomatoes were a little underwhelming. Great innovative cocktail list and ample wine choices. I wasn't impressed with the dessert menu, but I'm also not a dessert person. Great place to go out for a special meal. read more

Amazing. Can't believe I missed this place on previous trips to Ashland - won't make that mistake again! We made an early reservation and were among only a handful of other diners seated in their stunning backyard garden. It was a very intimate experience that felt like a summer dinner your friend would throw at their house - if your friend was a professional chef. Amazing farm-to-table style contemporary cuisine, and a good sized menu. We started with a dozen oysters (amazing to find oysters this delicious and fresh in small-town Southern Oregon, and the wasabi and honeydew granita was a nice twist on traditional wasabi), followed by the gazpacho, grilled cucumbers and shrimp appetizers. The gazpacho was the star, followed by, specifically, the tomatoes and fennel capers on the grilled cucumber dish. Our mains were the chicken confit and a special that included salmon, octopus and stewed vegetables. I'm not normally a chicken girl, but that dish was one of the better things I've ever eaten. The polenta in particular was heavenly. Unfortunately, my husband was not as thrilled with the special - I gave it a try and did find it fairly lacking in flavor, and we counted only three pieces of octopus. He agreed mine was amazing, however (and lucky for him, I'm a sharing person). We're not big dessert eaters, and we almost passed, but I convinced him to try the budino. My family in particular loves a good budino, even though he was hesitant about banana chips and almonds, neither of which he likes. Well, color us both impressed! I've had a lot of budinos in my day, and this one was a standout. Possibly the best meal we enjoyed during our visit to Ashland, we will absolutely be returning. read more

Our first post-Covid visit revealed a differently wonderful combination of flavors, presentation, and service than we remembered pre-pandemic. Although we were in town just a week, we came back for a second meal and experienced another wonderful feast. Actually, "feast" is not quite correct. The menu offerings are a bit eclectic to be served at a common feast. Many of the offerings that appealed to my no-red-meat palate were starters so that a shared sampling of cucumbers, fries, and a simple salad makes a satisfying non-"feast" meal. The starter sizes are ample, but more importantly the tastes are delicious and somewhat not what you're expecting. Inventive, but not scary. Both times we went in July we had no play to rush off to, and the servers seemed comfortable with our slow pace. Others came and went, but we relaxed and order another course or cocktail. We probably fit in to the overall pace of the restaurant -- the bar earns its reputation for slow,,,, errr,,, deliberate service! The seafood special was an excellent salmon which I had one visit. The red-meat special made our mammal-flesh-eating co-diners very happy. And one of the nights we kept going and had deserts (Chocolate Budino and sorbets) which were very nice toppings to a satisfying night. read more

We drove up from the Bay Area for a weekend of food, wine and Shakespeare in the Medford/Ashland area and Peerless was our first dinner. What a way to start the trip!! Peerless delivered strong!!! This place is adorable - we were seated in the garden which turned so magical once the sun set with string lights overhead. Our host and server were welcoming and cheerful and clearly passionate about the restaurant. We kicked off dinner with some unique craft cocktails, paired with oysters and beef tartar. The oysters came with a house made chili sauce instead of the standard Tobasco - super nice touch! Steak tartar delivered and while the crisp served with was tasty I would have preferred toast points. Main course was executed very well - duck confit was substantial but not heavy, as it sat atop a bright and seasonal succotash. The lamb was cooked nicely and while I'm typically not a fan of polenta, I think the gouda that was folded in won me over. We paired these proteins with a local bottle pinot which worked really nicely,especially as the 100deg weather had cooled and there was a gentle breeze rolling through the garden. We were stuffed but it'd be a shame not to take a peek at dessert, and sure glad we did. The black pepper basque cheesecake was fantastic. I'd actually say this was the most memorable dish as it hit all of the right notes and wasn't something I'd experienced. It's a solid basque cheesecake but not overly sweet as the black pepper tempered it nicely. There's no crust on a basque cheesecake so the chef added crumbled shortbread cookies allowing the diner to incorporate as little (or as much) textural contrast as desired - - this was great!! A couple spoons of maserated strawberries helped wake up the creamy cheesecake. I know I've really talked up the cheesecake but ONE MORE ELEMENT which I did not expect - THE WIPPED CREAM!! OMG, how often do you comment on the whipped cream adorning your dessert ***like never*** Made with sorrel (which grows on site) the whipped cream carried the sweet and savory theme and was such a delightful surprise. This place was cozy perfection. Stopped in on our way through Ashland after a long day of driving. Perfect martinis, lobster salad was fresh and delicious, burger was one of the best I've had in a while. Other highlights were the Caesar, French onion soup, and beef tartare. Firstly - this gem of a spot is in the railroad district and while seems small at entrance, is quite spacious with room in the back and lovely outside patio area when weather permits. The bar and fireplace areas are lovely - decor and ambiance was inviting. We had Thanksgiving dinner here and they made the menu easy by only needing to select two items. Cocktails delish and homemade dinner rolls and turkey confit croquettes were delish although the blue cheese bit in the croquettes was a little too strong. Carrot soup was flavorful but almost had an indian cuisine hint. The green beans were yummy with crispy onion bits on top and two of us enjoyed the turkey entree which was complete with bread pudding/stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, squash. Two of us had the fish/halibut which was very dry and served over creamy mashed potatoes with 3 halved brussell sprouts tucked underneath. We both agreed that the brussells were the best we've ever had and would've loved more or a complete side dish of those. Dessert was delicious - homemade pumpkin pie with a maple whipped cream, sooo good - and a creme fraiche ice cream with graham cracker crumble and butterscotch shell. This dining experience was tainted by ordering 2 drinks at the Bar then taking them to the table. I have done this many times at restaurants and most always they accommodate and Add to total bill. Especially for business this is helpful. In this case the Bar tender / server came to table & essentially demanded payment so she could get her Tip..., Rude, Unprofessional, unnecessary all for a few $$. I'm a recently retired 63 yo ER doc. Born and raised in SF. I've been fortunate to experience a lot of incredible meals in my life. On my way to Portland with my paramour to visit my son when I discovered this restaurant for the first time. 1. The physical space. Warm on the inside, perfect on a cold day. The outside seating is set in a garden with fountains and festive hanging lights, a real treat. A beautiful setting for an epic meal. 2. Staff Engaged, friendly, with just the perfect amount of attentiveness. 3. Cocktails The new norm, and I'm loving it, is a bevy of signature cocktails at restaurants. Peerless doesn't disappoint. Bar director Baylee Putnam is sorta spectacular in that department. I had edge of the desert. An aptly named drink evocative of the southern deserts. Thai chili infused reposado with agave, watermelon juice, and tajin. Wow 4. Menu Inventive, playful, and delicious. I wanted one of everything! The polenta cake with heirloom tomatoes, flank steak with chili infused crema, and the Red Buttes Farm mixed greens (with fried zucchini pickles, springtime greens, and cantaloupe). Superb!
