If I could give 6 or 7 stars I would. As is the case with many restaurants when I'm by myself, I sheepishly check in at the hostess/host stand and ask for a seat the bar. I do this to gauge reactions. And here, they were super friendly and accommodating. I took a spot at the end of bar and immediately struck up a conversation with the couple next to me. They had a burger that wasn't on the menu I had been given. Apparently there is a sort of soft opening before they open for dinner with a different menu. That's cool! I had about three hours until a Shakespeare show, so I decided for the full experience: Salad - I spent nearly the entire salad experience trying to decide whether I liked the dressing or the bright citrus of the grapefruit better. What was never in question was how tasty and refreshing it was. Crab and Melin salad. Appetizer - I wasn't sure what to expect with the Beef Carpaccio. Definitely my first time with this dish. But it won't be the last time. I probably ate it wrong, but mixing the arugula and cheese was very tasty. It disappeared quickly. Main - so it wasn't really a main, but the dish came at the recommendation of the bartender. The asparagus in the description was the selling point, but the potato dumplings reminded me of gnocchi. It was almost the perfect round up to a stellar meal. Drinks - My favorite cocktail is a prohibition style drink called a New York Sour. I think I like it because the red wine tones down the sweetness of the sour mix. I asked for one and after I finished it, the bartender asked how it was and admitted she'd never made one before. I said it was okay and we talked about what I'd do different. The second one was perfect. See the pictures for a comparison of the two.

We had the most incredible and delicious Christmas Eve experience. The restaurant felt festive and warm, the service was outstanding. Everyone was incredibly attentive and welcoming. The food was outstanding. The flavor combinations are scrumptious and unique. These kind of flavor combinations leave you thinking about them for days. We have visited Peerless outside of the holidays, and I am happy to report that the food and service is incredible year round. They also have an excellent Happy Hour menu available. If you are looking for the perfect place for a special occasion or maybe you are just looking for a "treat yourself" kind of experience, look no further than The Peerless.

This was my first time coming here. I think because it was part of the hotel next door, I didn't think much of it but one of my friends wanted to go, so we met up here. The interior dining room is a bit dark, but interesting. We had a really nice table out on the deck. The cocktails were interesting and I ordered the refreshing Shrubbery. We also ordered the gouda fries, duck dumplings, and vegetable caesar. They were all a nice start to our meal. I ordered the sourdough crusted pork chop. It was a good size, though part of it was real fatty. The others ordered the fritters, which Kel liked, and Autonia liked her ribeye. We all thought the carrot juice cavatelli was really good. The service was attentive without hovering. I think she knew we were all catching up since it was the first time we got to see each other since last year. I can see why people love eating here, especially outside. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

We went to Peerless for our 11th wedding anniversary and overall it was a great meal. The oysters were fresh and the green chili lime juice is divine with them. The duck confit was a standout for sure. While we do wish we had made our reservation for the outdoor patio area, the decor inside is nice. It was a bit awkward how quiet it was when we were there though. With just us and two other tables in a corner, we could definitely hear each other's conversations. Aside from that, our server provided excellent service all evening. She was a delight and we'd like to come back.

What a terrific experience! We arrived late into town and caught an Uber to the restaurant about an hour before closing. We were greeted with smiles, a fun attitude, and patience while we deliberated about drinks and food. Totally set the mood for the meal. The food was FANTASTIC! We ordered: the albacore salad, grilled asparagus and cucumber (who knew?!), yogurt with pickles, fries with housemade aioli, and, our absolute favorite, a savory cheesecake. So good I had to congratulate the chef, who says it was a fortuitous accident in the kitchen which they tweaked and kept in the menu. A MUST. Bathroom and restaurant are clean, comfortable, with nice lighting. We talked about this restaurant for days- pricing completely commensurate with the quality and quantity. Bookmark this restaurant!

I'm blown away at the elevated service, atmosphere, and panache offered at Peerless. It's always a mystery to me how the smaller sister city of a larger adjoining city can be so drastically opposed culinarily. Establishments like Peerless play a critical role in that equation--setting a very high bar. If I lived here, this would be date night without question. Let's start with getting in. They take reservations through Tock, which can be reached through Yelp. The integration is seamless, but ultimately requires an account to sign in. I find this off putting. Fortunately the old school method of a phone call still works. Leave a message with details and they call you back quickly. They offer outdoor, indoor, and bar area. I opted for a quaint table by the fountain. The right choice for a beautiful summer evening. The menu is compact but impressive. Apps consist of soups, salads, and a raw oyster special that rotates seasonally with what's freshest. I opted for the french fennel onion soup. This was wonderful and so packed with rich flavors. The fennel really adds a bright freshness that cuts through typical heavy feel of a traditional French onion. They had a king salmon special tonight which was tempting, but ultimately went with the duck confit--I'm guessing this is a signature item for them and for good reason. It was exquisite. A nice sized bone-in leg and thigh served atop lightly curried white beans with a fennel onion salad and caramelized shallot coconut dressing. The method of preparing was text book. Crispy skin, tender fall apart dark meat that just melts in your mouth. I will not soon forget this one. My only minor critique is the ratio of beans in proportion to the protein. An almost overwhelming amount of beans. Drinks consisted of an expertly crafted negroni and an amazing cabernet franc from Quady North vineyard close by. Both were excellent. There are many excellent choices in this tiny town of Ashland, but Peerless seems have that quintessential edge of excellence in this competitive market. Highly recommended.

Ashland is simply full of surprises. Peerless restaurant has to be one of the best restaurants in town. The cocktails are amazing and the seafood selections are fresh especially the oysters. What really makes them so great is the fusion of flavors. I had ordered their duck noodles and it was delicious. Fish sauce, if not added correctly, can easily make a dish salty. However the added chili honey balances the entire dish and not making flavor over power the other. From looking at their menu they continue to use fresh ingredients year round so what may be your favorite this season may change next season. Should you have room for dessert, I highly recommend their sweet corn ice cream and madelines. oh my goodness they were delicious. My last parting words of wisdom is to book a reservation because it makes it easier for you and their staff.

    Grilled butternut squash shared plate

My husband and I had an excellent experience dining at Peerless this past weekend. We were seated near the fireplace toward the front, which was so cozy and warm. We're pescatarians, so we were thrilled to find seafood options on the fall/winter seasonal menu. I started with the hot toddy. It was perfect, and the tamarind added a nice zing to it. My husband had the happy hour Manhattan. We shared three appetizers (the kale salad, the grilled butternut squash, and the house-made butternut squash cavatelli. Then I had the poached lobster on frisée salad (an appetizer) as my main course. My husband chose the daily seafood entree, which was halibut served with sunchokes and picked onions. The food was all excellent! Highlights were the cavatelli, lobster and especially the halibut. Usually, we love to get the basque black pepper cheesecake for desert, but they didn't have it on the menu this time, and we didn't have room left for dessert.

We have been here a few times and never disappointed. Last evening we sat outside in a garden setting. Quite lovely. Our server was attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. I enjoyed the grilled pork ribeye over a bed of rice and super fresh garden veggies. The presentation and quality of the food was excellent. Just confirms why we keep coming back

A must visit in Ashland! Reservations highly recommended! THE AMBIANCE INDOOR: Nice, classic decor (and air conditioned) OUTDOOR GARDEN Nicely laid out with strings of light to light up the evening Great cocktails and a good variety of food to choose from. Check out their menu online. THE FOOD The Cheeseburger They make a mean hamburger cooked to your desired temperature. Great charbroiled taste crispy on the edges. Smoked Tomato & Bleu Polenta Cakes Chimichurri, marinated tomatoes I never tasted so much flavor with a polenta cake! Highly recommend this dish! The raw oysters Can't go wrong with raw oysters!

4 stars for food, 2 for service. We have loved this restaurant. Nice outdoor and inside dining spaces and good food. We made a point of eating here during a short Ashland visit. We had a 5pm reservation and were attending an 8pm play. We sat and ordered an appetizer and cocktails. Our server asked if we were seeing a play and when we said yes, she said we should get our orders in quickly. We did and ordered wine to have with dinner. Our dinners came in about 5 minutes, our drinks weren't halfway gone. No wine delivered. I told the server we were not ready and she only offered to reheat the food. For these $$$ prices, we expect better food delivery timing. Her attitude spoiled the meal.

This restaurant is every bit as pretty as you see in the pictures! Wow! What a setting! The patio garden space is simply enchanting and we enjoyed every minute of our time here. The food was also delicious and enjoyable - we ordered many things and did a bit of sharing: the Red Buttes Farm mixed greens was a salad that was almost too pretty to eat! Loved the fries and the bread and the grilled cucumber appetizer. There is no bad meal here - the chicken confit was my main course and really was a star. But I think my son will always remember the cheesecake - clearly the best one he has ever had and will look forward to the next time we dine here. We all will! I enjoyed my glass of Sauvignon blanc. My husband liked his artichoke cocktail! Service was also warm and kind and helpful. Overall, a happy and memorable dining experience! Be sure to book your table in advance through OpenTable.

The vegan food here is wonderful. There were not many vegan options but the options they did have were quite tasty. We had the lettuce wedges, the beets with mushrooms and the cantaloupe sorbet. The outdoor setting is quite romantic. We love the ambience. We also had a really great matre'd waiter. The service was phenomenal. Our only small complaint is that there were more vegan options. We're hoping there's more in the future.

A happy hour menu was posted in the window-from 4-5pm every day of the week. We got in during happy hour and were able to score one of the few outdoor creekside tables. It was super pleasant to be able to sit outside and hear the creek while eating delicious food. Ordered the house made blackberry soda-pretty good. Also had the happy hour fried chicken and hh burger, as well as the scallops off of the main menu. The burger was thick and juicy. My kids and husband said the fries were some of the best they've had-crispy exterior and soft interior. Fried chicken had a light crispy coating on the outside and the honey Aleppo mixture was great, though son said it could've used a little more salt. My scallops were some of the best scallops I've ever had before--so well cooked and perfectly seasoned and with these thinly sliced snap peas that were just barely blanched that added texture and freshness to the dish. For dessert I had the olive oil cake with fresh berries--so delicious and perfect way to top off the meal. Service was pretty good. Would def be back!

As a chef at two James Beard-winning restaurants, a server, owner, and consultant, I have dedicated my life to the food industry and the people within it. I'm from Ashland, and I was so happy when places like this started showing up in my hometown. Good food and atmosphere can be so hard to find. Coming home to Ashland can be a true oasis for my family. My wife and I have made it our life's mission to make our daughter feel equal and included. Our daughter was born with a rare condition called AMC and does not have normal function in any of her limbs. She currently spends 3-4 days a week in physical therapy to continue building strength so her body and organs can function properly. We were visiting family at the park and suggested stopping in for a beverage and snacks to escape the heat after a long day. We typically plan everything ahead to ensure wherever we go can accommodate my daughter's wheelchair and needs. When we arrived, we thought, "Wow, perfect, she can wheel right in and up to one of the many open tables." Once we were "greeted" by the host, I realized we were not who she wanted to deal with. Three kids, three adults, a stroller, and a wheelchair. She looked like she wanted nothing to do with us, like we were dirt on her shoe. "No reservation," she said. I replied, "Yeah, so sorry, we figured since it was a Monday night right when you opened, and there were only two two-tops seated, we could probably find somewhere to sit." I reassured her we would not stay long enough to impact reservations at the larger front tables, which usually have reserved markers on them but did not at the time. We could all feel that she didn't want to seat us, and we left despite me practically begging to make something work for us, because I know she could have if she wanted to. Being from the industry, I understand what kids can do to an atmosphere, and I know a lot of restaurant workers don't enjoy dealing with other people's children. But when we went outside and my daughter cried and said, "They didn't want me there" So I loaded my daughter's wheelchair back into the car so I could carry her up the stairs at Brickroom, where one employee was working the entire place and took amazing care of us, I might add. We resorted to a booster seat for my daughter since she couldn't use her wheelchair there. She ended up falling out of the seat and slamming onto the hardwood floor. She cried and was embarrassed. The young man tending bar while also waiting every table rushed over with a bag of ice to comfort her. It was honestly touching how kind he was. When we left Brickroom, we had spent more time there than we originally intended to spend at Bar Juliet. As we walked back by Bar Juliet, we noticed the restaurant was still only about half full, and one of the large front tables had remained open the entire time from around 4:10 until 5:40 when we walked by again. I had to stop and ask the host why she couldn't have seated us considering that table never filled. Her only explanation was, "Our kitchen is slow getting food out." Such an incredibly weak excuse. I hope she understands she was wrong and that she made my daughter feel unwanted simply because accommodating us wasn't convenient for her. I have never left a review in my life, but I was so saddened and disgusted by this experience that I felt I had to.

Alchemy is in my top 3 favorite places for a dressy dinner when we are visiting Ashland. The only slightly negative thing I have to say is that we were there celebrating a birthday once and at the end of the meal our server brought out a candle on a small, flat ceramic dish. The birthday girl's comment was, "You just spent $300 on dinner and all they brought me for my birthday was a candle?" It seemed a little chintzy since most places will give you an actual dessert, not just a candle, but at least they brought a candle. Other than that tiny little thing, we still love to eat here and will be back when visiting in the future.

The latter changes seasonally--in our case it was a dashi broth with a variety of local mushrooms and vegetables. Both dishes were good, with my steak cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes amazingly creamy without tasting too buttery; the dashi broth was delicious as well. We also split the steak tartare, the house bread, and the chips & dip (seasonal special) as appetizers. With the exception of the chips & dip, the appetizers were good but nothing outstanding. The chips & dip, however, were REALLY GOOD! I did not know you could elevate potato chips like that, but their house-made chips are delicious and I would highly recommend trying them. Both my fiancé and I were not a huge fan of the sauce (just a little too creamy, it's really smooth though so if you like creamy sauces you'll probably enjoy it!), but just eating the plain chips was amazing. They even brought us a second serving of chips for free since we hadn't used all of the dip! We also ordered a pear tart for dessert which I would also recommend getting! Delicious crust and good pear flavor.
