    Empanadas
    Dave K.

Where do you want to eat? I mean, what sort of experience are you looking for? Fancy, dive, comfort, experimental? On and on, the hospitality industry offers us endless types of opportunities for an evening out. I worked in fine dining long enough, so that now, I just want to feel good, which is exactly what you get at Agave. The sweetest people work here, and the mood is defined by warmth, health, and solid technique, which makes all the difference. After all, Mexican food uses the same ingredients; too often that means basic, flavorful, yet heavy food. Not at Agave. The tacos were large yet light. The empanadas were exquisite. The chips--some of the best I have had, thin and brittle on the teeth, and absolutely ungreasy. The drinks--two different types of margaritas, jamaica and sandia, were refreshing. Wow, Agave surprised us!

    Tamale

Wanted to rank this restaurant 5/5 stars so bad as the tamales I ordered were easily some of the best if not the best I've ever had. Unfortunately the tacos had one giant giant flaw and tbat was that they were made pur of flour. For a burrito I understand them being made out of flour but for tacos I heavily prefer corn and in my experience tbat is the most traditional way to make them and also the tastiest! The staff was friendly. In the future I would make sure to remember to order the tacos with corn tortillas instead!

Agave is your classic Mexican restaurant perfectly meeting that craving. Visited by Guy Fieri, they have delicious food that is going to be as close as you can get this north of the border Growing up in California, I am pretty picky about my Mexican food. While it's near impossible to match Southern California, the range of options is quite impressive. Their chips are phenomenal and you can tell that the energy of the restaurant is family-recipe style. What impressed me the most is that while the service is order at the counter instead of at the table, the staff was seemingly telepathic, hearing us comment something such as "oh the chips were good I wish we had a little more" and more magically arrived without us asking. Agave is exactly what you expect to get and even more some!

Carne Asada Burrito and John's Famous Margarita

Visited twice before reviewing. This fast casual restaurant with ordering at the counter is currently the best Mexican food in downtown Ashland. Staff are friendly and seating is split 50/50 indoor and out. We enjoyed the Carne Asada Burrito and fish tacos, although the John's Famous Margarita is only fine.

Fresh Chips and Salsa & a margarita

1st visit, this is an order before you sit down. Crispy fish taco was our favorite! The mahi special with rice and beans was good. Duck taco was decent too. Chips were crispy and fresh and the salsa was a duo & they both were flavorful. The margarita made my eye twitch. Pretty strong. Lol The inside doesn't fit too many people

We sort of stumbled upon Agave after checking out a couple of other places that were dog-friendly but looked uninteresting. After finding Agave, we are thanking our lucky stars. This is among the best restaurants serving Mexican cuisine I have ever been to. I've lived on the border as well as all over the country in locations with outstanding restaurants, and Agave delivers. Period. The ingredients used in the recipes--including the tortillas--are made daily, and you can taste this. The service was 5-star plus and the fact that it was a dog-friendly restaurant adds extra stars. To underscore how much we loved this place, we went here for lunch and came back the same night for dinner. What to get? We had the ceviche, carne asada tacos, empandas de pollo, sopa de lima, chile relleno, green chile and cheese tamal and some tequila. Ask for the habanero salsa if you like heat. If you're in Ashland, go here. So good!

Agave is the perfect lunch spot. Walk past Mix, over the river, North of the main plaza, look for the arches - if you are driving to Agave they have their own parking lot - great as parking is hard to find in the summer. Get the guacamole with two super tasty salsas - I loved the smoked chipotle salsa. Margarita - excellent. Great fast service. Fun artsy atmosphere. Aircon inside, - two outside patios. Chile Relleno was super! Homemade tortillas. An enjoyable experience - I highly recommend Agave. Ashland, Oregon.

Our table was in their patio space, which I actually like better than the indoor part of the restaurant. The patio space feels very open and has a lot of live plants in the planters that make space between tables. It was a little warm on the patio since it was 98 degrees outside, but they keep it relatively cool on this mostly enclosed patio. Our server was great. She was so friendly and fun to talk to. She helped us figure out what we wanted to order and checked in on us just the right amount. You can tell the food here is very fresh and homemade. We started with the Deviled Eggs, which are really special. I love how they serve them over a bed of crushed up potato chips as they give this dish some salty crunch. Next we had the Beet salad, which is marinated beets over a whipped cheese. The beets do have a strong vinegar flavor, but it's balanced out beautifully by the cheese. My wife ordered the Mushroom Bolognese, which was probably the best dish of the evening. This is an incredible, vegetarian dish that is so meaty without any meat. The finely diced mushroom sauce is so good along with the handmade noodles. Also, adding burrata to it gives it a perfect creaminess. I ordered the pork chop, which was also excellent and enormous. It did take me a lot longer to eat since it was a little hard to cut, the compote on top added a great sweetness, but I feel like it could've used more. Also, the polenta and grilled asparagus was awesome. Lastly, we got the Rice Pudding for dessert. It comes with a hazelnut crumble and a dolce de leche sauce. Normally, I feel like rice pudding has a kind of thin, milky consistency, but not this. It is think and has a wonderful texture. It is probably the best rice pudding I've ever had. The nuts give a satisfying crunch and the dolce de leche sauce is light and sweet. Disclaimer: we did order one dish we really didn't like. It was a special salad with endives and lentils. The server was happy to get us another dish.

Speaking, the brisket in the Banh Mi was unfortunately tough and lacked the tenderness you'd expect from a properly smoked or braised cut. It had the distinct texture of a pre-packaged Sysco-style product, or perhaps it was a cold portion reheated on a flat top without being properly rehydrated, leaving it dry and chewy. I understand that protein carries a high food cost, especially in the current market. However, a more effective approach might be to balance the menu engineering by leaning on lower food cost items, like seasonal sides or creative vegetarian options, to offset the expense of sourcing and correctly preparing higher-end brisket. This would allow for a better product that justifies its price point, covers its own cost, and ultimately helps the company's bottom line while maintaining the quality standards this town deserves. I'd love to see a return to the quality I experienced a few years ago. All and all, despite the brisket. The service was kind and friendly.

I love that the restaurant store front is opened wide, it makes it easy to approach and order at the counter. They have a very large variety of alcoholic drink options and some very tasty non alcoholic options as well. Even though we sat outside about 5 tables down, they still came by to deliver our food to us instead of having us waiting inside. The food was amazing. Meat was juicy, bread was perfect, both the sides of fries and house made chips were delicious. The ranch tasted like it was house made as well but I forgot to ask them. My cider was great and my partner got a strawberry slushy- both did not disappoint. The overall theme inside is adorable! It's got a lot of wooden pieces and a camping trailer inside really ties the theme together nicely. There is plenty of tables and shade outside and lots of indoor seating as well. Bathrooms are super clean and clearly well maintained by the folded toilet paper roll. The only thing I will say is if you're going to sit outside expect outside things to happen. There was a lot of flying debris from around the creek due to someone down the way doing outdoor maintenance. Despite this, my partner and I thought it was worth it to hear the running water and be in such a beautiful area for lunch. I would scream my recommendation from the roof top if I could. Thank you for a great meal!

Maybe it's just this Ashland store, but the amount of salad has been less than satisfactory. Today's salad was about 30-40% less than a few years ago.
