    House margarita with queso-chorizo dip

My quest for out-of-this world Mexican food in Ashland continues. I was hoping Mezcal would be a contender after making its triumphant return following a 3 year hiatus. I never got a chance to try the place the first go-around, so better late than never. The location has it all. Downtown spot amidst the friendly Ashland bustle. Third floor balcony seats with an amazing view of the valley--unbeatable when the weather is just right. We made reservations outside and it ended up being a gorgeous warm evening with a cool breeze. Drinks came out. I was stoked for a nice meal. The eats were ultimately lacking. The highlight of the meal was the chorizo queso dip for the chips. Aggressive flavor with diced peppers and seasoned chorizo in each bite. My main was the shrimp enchiladas which I think they forgot to season. Enchiladas tasted like plain tortillas, rice tasted like plain rice, and beans tasted like plain beans. It was missing the spice and flare of a good Mexican joint. The wet burrito was a notch better, so I think there could be some hidden gems on the extensive menu. Although I've noticed when a restaurant menu has several pages, it becomes too difficult to execute every option with finesse. Overall in my mind the place falls in the "tourist restaurant" category. Probably good for people passing through who want a spot with a great view walking up from the plaza. I think if the restaurant wants to level-up and attract locals, they should simplify the menu to one page and focus on elevating the quality.

Trivia: If you sit on the roof and face the hillsides to the East, what four things will you see flapping in the wind? - - - Down a narrow and mostly dark hallway will find you at the creepiest elevator to start this excursion. It's slow and windowless and gives you vibes that if it stalls out, no one will ever find you. After that, it's all roses and tail wags. Queso - good with chunks of peppers (maybe jalapeños? Definitely jalapeño, there's some KICK). The mezcal old fashioned struck me as a little watery. For those who don't like the heavy mezcal flavor or the heavy taste of smoky bourbon, will like it. Food came out Fast! I ordered the carnitas because it got me a chance to try so many things. The guac, the rice and beans, the pico. Service was friendly and on point. The same hostess was also the server. Doing it all! Hard to best the view!

I'm glad they reopened! I first came here years ago and was excited to see it is back! Great looking menu, lots of seating and friendly staff. The hibiscus margarita wasn't overly sweet, the asparagus was nicely cooked, and the carnitas were full of flavor! I even enjoyed the rice and beans. I wish there were more than 3 small tortillas for the large serving of carnitas but everything else was great!

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Take the elevator up to the third floor. Newly renovated and classy atmosphere. Outstanding Mexican cuisine. The arroz con pollo was beyond delicious! Huge portion, come hungry! Our server was gracious and sweet. Our food was served quickly. There's a great view and outdoor patio.

Really great seeing this place back in business. Their location is absolutely perfect, in the heart of downtown and a few of the river and downtown. We decided to order the chile relleno and it was delicious. We also had the guacamole with a side of habanero sauce. Have a giant offering of tequilas and Mekkers. Definitely worth stopping by.

I chose the mushroom bolognese and the asparagus appetizer. The food was excellent although Randy and I switched meals because he didn't enjoy the puree on his dish as much as I did so I ate his summer campanelle and he ate my bolognese and we were both very happy customers. The burrata was very good and I loved (LOVED) my asparagus. Everything was flavorful and fresh - and who doesn't love homemade pasta. For dessert we got the strawberries and cream and the chocolate mousse. We shared both because who doesn't love strawberries with their chocolate mousse! We didn't get a pic of it but Randy got a drink similar to the one he got on our last visit but this one was grapefruit and very refreshing and delish. We sat on the patio again. It was warm when we first got there (5 pm) but definitely cooled down as time went on. Kyle was our server tonight. I'll start by saying you can't go wrong with any of the staff that serve or give refills or deliver the food (when they deliver it, they sometimes describe the dish and it's awesome). Anyway, as per usual on our visits, Kyle was excellent, checked on us often. Looking forward to our next visit in October!

Speaking, the brisket in the Banh Mi was unfortunately tough and lacked the tenderness you'd expect from a properly smoked or braised cut. It had the distinct texture of a pre-packaged Sysco-style product, or perhaps it was a cold portion reheated on a flat top without being properly rehydrated, leaving it dry and chewy. I understand that protein carries a high food cost, especially in the current market. However, a more effective approach might be to balance the menu engineering by leaning on lower food cost items, like seasonal sides or creative vegetarian options, to offset the expense of sourcing and correctly preparing higher-end brisket. This would allow for a better product that justifies its price point, covers its own cost, and ultimately helps the company's bottom line while maintaining the quality standards this town deserves. I'd love to see a return to the quality I experienced a few years ago. All and all, despite the brisket. The service was kind and friendly.

I love that the restaurant store front is opened wide, it makes it easy to approach and order at the counter. They have a very large variety of alcoholic drink options and some very tasty non alcoholic options as well. Even though we sat outside about 5 tables down, they still came by to deliver our food to us instead of having us waiting inside. The food was amazing. Meat was juicy, bread was perfect, both the sides of fries and house made chips were delicious. The ranch tasted like it was house made as well but I forgot to ask them. My cider was great and my partner got a strawberry slushy- both did not disappoint. The overall theme inside is adorable! It's got a lot of wooden pieces and a camping trailer inside really ties the theme together nicely. There is plenty of tables and shade outside and lots of indoor seating as well. Bathrooms are super clean and clearly well maintained by the folded toilet paper roll. The only thing I will say is if you're going to sit outside expect outside things to happen. There was a lot of flying debris from around the creek due to someone down the way doing outdoor maintenance. Despite this, my partner and I thought it was worth it to hear the running water and be in such a beautiful area for lunch. I would scream my recommendation from the roof top if I could. Thank you for a great meal!
