Our first attempt was 9:45 on a Thursday. Wasn't aware of the reservation only policy and were politely turned away... had no problem texting for a reservation for the following night for 4 people. When we rolled in at reservation time, we were brought on a whirlwind tour through the space-- a romantic front room, secretive stairways, a two-seater bar, and finally... our room. The wallpaper was cool, but the lighting was overly bright and the room was strangely shaped. We were the only ones sitting in the annex for five minutes or so, and the vibe was weird. There was a Tracy Morgan comedy special paused for 10 minutes, and then they played a campy '50s movie about women being romanced in Italy, which was aesthetically cool but distracting. When the room filled up, it was kind of a white bread, older crowd. The drink menu is varied but not encyclopedic. It took a while to get our drinks; whatever, it's peak hours on a Friday night. I had the Smoke Signals, a mezcal, chocolate bitters, orange, and allspice drink, served up. It was spirit-forward but not overwhelming, and not as smoky as what I was expecting due to the pretty mild mezcal. The spices didn't really come through for me, and it ended up being more of a straightforward drink. Liked it as it was well-made but wasn't bowled over. A friend had the Escobar, which was basically a tequila manhattan. Wasn't really my thing, or hers. There's a different between a boozy, bitter drink and an unbalanced one, and this could have used some citrus, sugar, or different proportions to balance it out (or maybe a smoother drinking tequila). My boyfriend had the Evil Witch, which was tasty but had a big licorice kick at the end from the absinthe which ended up dominating the drink entirely. Props to the Popcorn Savory and Sweet, which was puffy, crunchy, and caramelized. The rest of the food menu did not excite me. We had been hoping to make a big night of it but couldn't get ourselves excited about a second round. Took a while to get the check and get outta there once we were done, but appreciated our server's offer to split the checks. For the price point and the secrecy, I was expecting a much more special experience. Maybe it's my New Yorker standards, but I came away feeling off about my time here. If you got a seat somewhere else, it might be romantic; I would try to avoid the basement room if possible. It's a fine bar, but it didn't live up to its ambitions. read more

"Disappointing" is the best word I can think of to describe this place. I am giving it an extra star only because it did have potential...and still could if they make some changes. The idea of this place is really cool, and I was so excited to come here. Yet, when you make a reservation days in advance and get to the door to be told you're not on the list...this is disappointing. 30 seconds later, "oh wait, there you are." You think? That was awkward, but really not a big deal. It was everything else that happened next that killed this place for me. First, our waitress totally ignored us for quite some time. I already knew, from reading reviews and a disclaimer on the menu, that this place was going to be very slow-paced. And yet I wasn't prepared for another couple, that arrived five to ten minutes after we got there and was awkwardly seated extremely close to us, to receive waters and have their orders taken before we were even acknowledged by our waitress. It gets worse. I had purchased a Groupon for the Absinthe flight. *Please note* that I have had Absinthe several times before and know what to expect. Our drinks were so watered down that I could taste tap water in our Absinthe. Perhaps this was their way of making more money off the Groupon deal? After realizing what a rip-off these drinks were, along with not being able to find one vegan item (or something that could be made vegan) and only one vegetarian choice on the menu, we were ready to get out of there. And, as if our waitress hadn't already been snooty enough, she got even snootier once we broke the news that we were ready for our check. Believe me, if the drinks had been halfway decent, and they had a better vegetarian menu, we would've spent A LOT more cash. I've always been wanting to try this place but the place has always been packed on weekends and Friday nights without reservations. Popped into this place on Tuesday night around 8 pm and there were literally only 4 other people there. The inside is extremely cozy, and when I mean cozy, that's a polite way of saying it's the smallest space I've ever seen. Smaller than a studio apartment, I'd say 300 square feet max. The drinks were definitely on par and very tasty. I got the buffalo bison? I can't recall the name exactly but it was their twist of a bourbon sour - my favorite go to drink. It's a great throwback to prohibition era style drinking. It was very small, dark, and cozy inside. Everything looked the part as a 1920's speakeasy from the bar, dim lights, and the cocktail waitresses. There was a huge misconnect with the music. Salt n Peppa playing overhead. Don't get me wrong, I love me some throw backs. But at a speakeasy, just didn't seem like the right fit. You can't get that cozy yet mysterious, luxuriously quiet feel without some kind of reservation-only system, but this one still allows for spontaneous stops - we texted them just 20 min before arriving on a Tuesday night. Happy hour 6-8pm with half-off their craft cocktails makes it easy to explore their menu. The bartenders also love to experiment, and it wasn't very busy on Tuesday, so go get a custom cocktail too! The person who seated us was relaxed, friendly and welcoming, taking the time to answer my questions and recommend a cocktail when I had a hard time choosing. The cocktails are creative, balanced and aromatic without flavors becoming confusing or overwhelming. I tried the fleur de lis, which our server recommended when I asked for something tart, herbaceous, and bitter with some floral notes, and the recommendation was spot on. I also tried the lady in the streets since I love perfumey floral absinthe drinks, and that was my favorite of the night. This spot brings mystery and variety to your cocktail-seeking adventure, offers great service, and seclusion while serving truly wonderful cocktails. This speakeasy bar can be hard to spot given that it's in an old apartment building, but if you see Pie Bar across the street, you're in the right place. Just ring the doorbell. They have a good list of cocktails but my favorite is an off menu item known as the Ramos Gin a Fizz. This is like an alcoholic Orange Julius smoothie and wonderful if you like citrus and egg whites. They played oldies, which I love! But didn't seem like it went well with the look of the place. When the door opens (assuming you have a reservation or some good luck) the hostess will smile, the black velvet curtain will be pulled back to reveal a small, dark, unassuming bar with a handful of tables, and a the center of it all, a bar full of mad-scientist activity, run by a chatty, personable bartender who is making some of the more interesting libations in Seattle. Look at the drink list carefully, and order anything that includes a fire show: essentially a glass warmed with flame and for some drinks, sugar sprinkled in the air to a sparkly magic effect.. My favorite drink of the night was the Spanish Coffee, a dessert drink served in a Harry Potter goblet with a frosted sugar rim that was set on fire until it melted almost into hard candy. Yum. We also shared a flaming goat cheese and the tots, both were pretty incredible. The tots were ridiculous addictive, the sauce was flavorful and had I brought a different purse I would have dumped it in my purse for later. So good. This is a concept that could really easily become a 'we're trying way too hard to make this cool but it's really just kitschy' situation but the soft lighting and delicate focus on art make it clear that the real canvas here is the martini glass. Knee-High has a delicate swanky sort of sex-appeal that flirts with everyone who knows of it's existence. With a feeling like the swinging Jazz of Some Like it Hot and enough cocktails to keep me intrigued for many visits to come, I will definitely be back, and you should join me. read more

I brought a colleague here to celebrate her new job. It was lovely. Lauren was our host, server and bartender all in one. She was friendly and efficient and her drinks were beyond wonderful. The setting takes us back in time, vintage wallpaper and chandeliers and candles on every table. It's tiny inside. We ordered the pork lumpia which came out hot and steamy, with a delightful sauce. Steak Tapa Rice Bowl and Chicken Adobo Rice Bowl were our next choices; so delicious. Our drinks were top-notch; Tiki Flower & Smokey Bandito and we called our second drinks our dessert. Really good place but tough to get into. The food and drinks were very good. The menu was creative. If you are going there for dinner make sure you have ample of time because the bar is so full they can take a lot of time to get tour drinks. They dont take reservations so make sure you have other plans because the waiting time can be upto an hour or more. You can make reservations at the door and come back later but if you are a little late you will lose place in the line and have to wait again. Only thing is the hostess was a little ditzy or probably thought she had too much power. We made a reservation at the door and came back after an hour and she said she couldn't find our name and started seating people that had arrived after us. We were lucky enough to be seated for 6 with no reservation. The service was fantastic, and the drinks were the best I've had. Everything I sampled was nicely balanced, if not more light than heavy handed with the alcohol. It was surprisingly loud for such a small space, but the music was good (I think we were in a mix of 80-90s that night). There is also food available on the menu. The more entree-type dishes stop being served after 11pm, and there are small plates available all night (like roasted nuts with rosemary and chile, yum!). There is this wedge shape building at the intersection of Olive and E. Olive. At the sharp tip of the wedge is this single door. On the side of the door is a plague that designates the place. Yep, open the door and go in. They used to make you ring the door bell. Not anymore. As cocktails goes, it is excellent. I had a "respect to the old timer" or something like that. It was greatly tasty. The problem is in the food section. I enjoyed (demanded) good munchies with my drinks, something will snack to a meal. But they are not really that. I love cocktails, and speakeasy-type cocktail bars and lounges are the only type of bars I frequent. This was my first cocktail bar I've ever been to in Seattle. I liked it only okay back then, but I can honestly after living in Seattle for 6 months and trying many other cocktail bars, it's underwhelming and overhyped, not at all a good representation of the richness of Seattle's great cocktail scene. If you do not frequent cocktail bars you might give this place 5 stars but relatively for the Seattle area I can only give this bar 3 stars. Literally every other cocktail lounge/bar I've been to since I moved to Seattle is better than this place. Drinks here are not so well balanced, not too creative, and taste very stiff. Many taste like medicine. They do not use many housemade tinctures or mixers here either, just off the shelf liqueurs. I had the bartender make something off the menu and it wasn't as good as the amazing custom cocktails I can get at Needle and Thread. I ordered modified versions of classic cocktails (where they take a classic recipe and replace one liqueur ingredient or add to a flavor) and it wasn't as well done as that of Bathtub and Gin Co. If I wanted my drink set on fire AND taste amazing, I would go to Canon. For classic drinks like the famous Last Word at a good price, I would go to Zig Zag cafe. Basically, every other bar in Seattle does cocktails better and has more charm compared to this bar. With the exception of Needle and Thread, which is very hard to get a reservation for, most other bars do not require an advanced reservation like Knee High. I think people only give this place high marks because of the "novelty factor" of the business name and the house it's in. The drinks themselves are really nothing special. Oh and the place was cramped and smelled like a dive bar, reeked of spilled beer. Usually cocktail lounges smell much nicer. The atmosphere was wrong, too. They played loud obnoxious music that was not appropriate of intimate lounge settings I look for when going to a speakeasy. read more

They have a really large drink menu and their cocktails are all very good. During happy hour some of their specialty cocktails are 1/2 off! The service has been a hit or miss, once when I sat down the chair was completely drenched in vinegar but you can't tell beforehand because of how dark it is inside... it's definitely better when they are less busy. The downstairs area is really cool but the couple times I've been there nobody is sitting there. Some of the good drinks are the one with cold brew, kneegroni, Manhattan and pear of lemons. Knocked on the door without reservations as we were waiting to get seated at Kedai Makkan. We were lucky in that we were able to get seats for a party of 5 without reservations. The service was attentive, the drinks were excellent. It was a great time to kill some time while waiting for dinner. I'd highly recommend. read more

The place was very small as said in the reviews and the description had said, but definitely a good place to catch up, chat or have a date. The Filipino food was definitely not as good (As I am Filipino), but still was alright for the place, but the price wasn't it. read more

Really great drinks, but the service was horrible! Had reservations, was seated, but didn't get to put in an order with our waiter until a good 15 minutes of just waiting on him. He didn't even come check if we needed another round of drinks. Finally when he did come around, we ordered another round of drinks, but after waiting ~20 minutes, we decided to cancel the drink order and go elsewhere. The hostess kept saying...."oh, it's a REALLY busy night". Ummm....it was like 1/3 full. My recommendation is to probably sit closer or near the bar area and make good with the bartender instead. Cute place... Tiny and discrete, very easy to miss. I had a coffee liquor type drink (served warm) and it was delicioussss. Oh, I also highly recommend the tator tots!!!! Definitely a good stop on a Seattle-outing night. The speak easy vibe that this place has is exciting and mysterious, but cocktails don't quite meet the standard. Probably because it's so popular? Either way, wasn't badddd... the bar tender did an amazing job, but the selections weren't my favorite. Would definitely come back!
