I've enjoyed the BBQ and miso garlic chicken flavors so far and will slowly work my way through the rest of the flavors. Next on my list is to try their fried chicken sandwich, which is on a Mariposa bakery gluten-free roll. For appetizers, I've the fried delicata squash and asian pickles, both were really good!

I was able to schedule my order through the Aburaya website, which is fulfilled via DoorDash. Starting with the gluten free fried chicken sando, this was massive and delicious! I would consider it to be more of a messy fried chicken sandwich as it's packed with the sides - tomato slices, cabbage slaw, dressings and more. The only down side is that the bottom bun did get a little soggy due to the sauces soaking up. Otherwise, the chicken was marinated and fried well which kept me coming back for more! This time, I also tried the 4-piece fried chicken in the orange honey aioli flavor. It's described on the menu as being sweet and while it was, I also found it to be quite balanced due to the saltiness coming from the soy sauce and marinade. I appreciated the consistenty of the aioli as well since it didn't feel too heavy but was still able to coat the chicken well. And the chicken itself was fried beautifully and remained juicy! For dessert, I had the vegan matcha chocolate cake and this blew my mind. Usually with vegan baked goods, it can be challenging getting the right consistency and texture, but the cake was moist and soft. It had this rich chocolate flavor that was pretty addicting. Along with the green tea icing, I absolutely enjoyed every bite. I love Aburaya and can't wait for my next visit!

We were seated near the entry to the kitchen and there was heavy foot traffic, I might try the main dining room next time or just stick with the bar at the far end as I'd prefer a more calm dining environment. Nevertheless it was overall a great experience. I loved the Ensalada Cesar (Cesar salad) with quinoa and tons of parmesan, and I loved the Aji de Gallina (chicken stew) with gnocchi, olives and egg. All the dishes were unique and delicious. They only offer Lucuma ice cream on the menu with espresso (Affogato) but they were nice enough to serve it alone as it's one of my favorite flavors of ice cream. They say they import it from Peru!

The restaurant is also featured in the Michelin Guide! The portions were generous, and the fall menu was rich, decadent, and full of flavor. They also have add-ons like focaccia and additional entrees if you're dining with a bigger group. A special shoutout to Trevor, our server and sommelier, who made the experience even better with his great service and wine knowledge! Overall, a fantastic spot for Italian food in Oakland, especially if you want a nice dinner with generous portions and a great prix fixe menu. We'll definitely be back!

What a beautiful gem in Oakland, so close to Lake Merritt!…read moreWe went here for a birthday celebration and it did not disappoint. I had set a reservation earlier in the week for MAMA and was excited to see their menu. We sat outside, where they have small seated tables on the sidewalk and lamp heaters for the cooler evenings. From the greeting at the door to our server, everyone we came in contact with was so kind and knowledgeable. This weeks menu featured: Honeynut squash soup, roasted beet & cress salad, house baked focaccia bread, pappardelle & mama's sugo (not pictured), ricotta gnudi, MAMA's beef & pork meatballs, ginger spiced cake, and dark chocolate tart (not pictured) All of the food was top notch, and a 3 course meal for less than $50? Where else can you find that? Everything was fresh and truly a great experience with no notes on how they could be better. I can't wait to go back and try more from their weekly menu. Thank you MAMA for a special birthday celebration and wonderful evening.

But as the night grew later, the room filled each table with diners that the single host, runner, waiter did an excellent job attending to. The vinaigrette with the shaken beef was memorable. The thick slice on the hamachi, while still totally tender like butter was incredible. The bread pudding did not travel well, and separated like an over cooked cobbler, but the chocolate yuzu cake was a hit for breakfast the next morning. Next time I guess I must try the Saucy wings and the short ribs. But it was a generous portion for the Chef's Tasting Menu, and I'd highly recommend exploring the menu that way.

Since I am going to be at OACC later for a band rehearsal, a search for a restaurant nearby results in Saucy Oakland, which is about 3 blocks away. Saucy Oakland has been around for about six years. Funny that I never knew about this restaurant even though I come to Oakland Chinatown quite often. Thanks to Victor G again. He certainly knows where to dine all over the Bay Area. I walk in and a gentleman hands me the menu for perusing. They have happy hours Wednesday through Saturday, 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM; weekend on Friday and Saturday, 8:30 PM to close at 9:30 PM. If one chooses to dine at Saucy, be there at least 15 minutes before they close for the evening. After perusing the menu, I decided to order their saucy wings and a large order of garlic noodles. The wings look delicious, seasoned with a glaze. The garlic noodles are on point. The ambiance is quite nice, especially the floral wall, the hanging plants overhead and the planter box by the entrance. Based on my observation, the seating capacity is a guesstimate of 25 people. Street parking can be problematic during the day. Not sure what street parking is like in the evening. Return visit? Yes, most likely for my birthday dinner next month.
