Spending the day in Fells Point on my quest for the perfect ramen. Beautiful day to be out. I have been to quite a few ramen restaurants, this one of the so-so ones. I ordered spicy shoyu as my main course, takoyaki and mini unagi donburi for the appetizers. Warm sake was ordered as my drink of choice as I love warm sake! The sake container was HOT lol!! Like so hot I had to wait for it to cool down so I could handle the container and pour the sake out. The takoyaki was good! Nice and hot, just the right balance of the flakes and mayo. The unagi donburi was the highlight here! Delicious and filling, the unagi seasoned perfectly on top of rice. The spicy shoyu-no flavor. The ingredients were fresh, but the broth left me wanting something more. It could have been because I got the chicken broth when I normally get the pork broth. This place is AMAZING! Located in the quaint Fleet St of Baltimore, this place gives you an authentic feel of Japan. Ok, ok - I am not an expert by any means on Japanese food but I judged based on these facts: 1. The sushi is legit. We ordered the tuna roll and fish was fresh and soft. And the roll was 3/4 fish vs more rice, so we knew they weren't messing around. A restaurant that invests in good sushi is good for us! 2. There is an option to order extra noodles for the picky eaters. I would recommend getting extra broth too! 3. The karaage came out hot! So yummy! This is some of the best ramen in Baltimore. That's not necessarily saying much (sorry charm city) but if you've got a craving for ramen, Kippo delivers nicely. My favorite is the Spicy Tonkatsu, which is really quite spicy! (You have been warned). It's got all the proper fixings, including the classic egg, and amazing slurpable noodles. I've also been very satisfied with the Tokyo Tonkatsu for when I'm not needing the spice to flush out my sinuses as much. You are welcome to add anything to any order for a small surcharge and I often do, as I believe anything can be improved with Kikurage mushrooms. Service is usually pretty fast, to be seated and get food. Of the 3-5 times I've been, there was one time when it was shockingly slow, but I think either they had just run out of some broth and were making more or it was an unlucky exception. It's cute that they are often playing Miyazaki films on their projector, making me nostalgic. They also have a nice selection of sake, if you want to jazz up your experiance. One time, I saw a pair of asian businessmen get out of a taxi with their bags straight from the airport and go right to Kippo. If that's not a good sign, I don't know what is! We decided to come here spontaneously on a Saturday night. It's the city so of course, it was very busy and parking was limited. Because I am pregnant, my stability isn't the best so we opted to wait for a booth to open up. As we waited, we were able to enjoy the Anime playing on the screen and look over the menu. Luckily, we were able to be seated within 10 minutes. They immediately serve you with ice-cold water. Because we had ample time to review the menu when we were waiting, we immediately knew what we wanted. For appetizers, we went with pork gyoza and Ebiyaki. For our Ramen, I went with Spicy Tonkotsu and my husband went with the Spicy Shiyu. Our appetizers came out about 5 minutes later then our Ramen came as we were still stuffing our face. The pork gyoza is spectacular. The pork is seasoned beautifully and it's accompanied by a rich and flavorful dipping sauce *chefs kiss*. The Ebiyaki was my personal favorite. Fried shrimp dumpling balls topped with tonkatsu sauce, mayo, seaweed flakes, and bonito fish flakes. I was undone after every bite....literally! We were blessed to have tried Ramen before coming here. Although it was good, it didn't leave us yearning for more. After sipping the broth, we knew that they won us over. It was PERFECT. The Spicy Tonkotsu was amazing. Rich, creamy, flavorful, with a punch of spice. My husband loved the Spicy Shiyu, I had a sip and I loved it! By far our favorite ramen spot! We love how many options there are to customize your ramen to your taste. My go to is the Goma Shio with chicken broth and my husband loves the Classic Shoyu with chicken broth. We also will typically order a bowl of extra noodles to share along with spicy paste and fried garlic. I have always had trouble finding good ramen due to allergies and dietary restrictions, but all of the options they have here and the ability to customize you bowl make it perfect for us. The staff is also always super friendly and happy to explain or make recommendations. They have very little delicacy in flavor or variety in their mouthfeel. It's a pork meatball inside a cheap wonton. The ramen have noodles only slightly higher in quality than top Ramen. They are not the expected buckwheat authentic japanese noodles used in higher quality ramen. The Tonkatsu broth contained very little collagen. Thus it had a watery mouthfeel. The broth also contained very little flavor. The weak broth was the backdrop for decent toppings of mushrooms and slightly overcooked pork. I was disappointed to find the Ramen many folks on Yelp in Baltimore have praised in decidedly mediocre. read more
