Kevin's Kitchen opened on 5/17/25 next to Times Market & Epi-Ya Bakery on So Beretania St, w/ Kevin Lee being the former owner chef of the Harbour Village Cuisine in HI Kai since 1997.
Kevin's Kitchen provides authentic Hong Kong style cuisine. Its extensive menu offerings include appetizers, soup, main entrees, bbq meats, hot pots, sizzling platters, pre-order specials, noodles/rice, veggies & dessert. In addition to its regular menu, it offers breakfast congee, party menus, catering trays, lunch bentos & special lunch dishes.
I walked in during the lunch hour, & it was packed w/ every single table taken! So, I decided to take out a whole soy sauce chicken. The hostess directed me to go directly to the end on the right side of the restaurant where the bbq meats were hanging.
I stand at the bbq meat counter waiting to put in my order. In the meantime, servers come & go in filling their lunch bentos w/ bbq meats that are being served to patrons. The guy is chopping meats non-stop & does not appear to understand English. After finally getting the attention of the person handling the cash register whose name is James, he disappears a number of times to tend to dine-in patrons. He returns, & I stated I wanted to take out a soy sauce chicken. James gives my order to the meat cutter, whereby the meat cutter takes a chicken from a side shelf & begins chopping. James disappears & returns, and tells me it's being chopped now, & the cost is $18 + tax, which I paid.
After arriving home, I realized I made a mistake. How did I know it was actually $18 despite the chicken being $7.80 per lb? It was never weighed to get its actual cost. We had already eaten part of it, so we could not return it to have it weighed. Plus, a Yelp photo showed a soy sauce chicken at $16.85, which appears to be more pieces as compared to my order.
I called Kevin's Kitchen about this issue & asked for the manager. James identified himself as the manager. Good, since he remembered helping me w/ this purchase. He said the supplier gave him bigger chickens this time, resulting in a higher price, so $18 was reasonable. But, I told him that this is just an estimate, as the actual cost is determined when it is weighed & noted on the scale. He agreed, but I think that because it was so busy, it was easier just to say $18 than to actually weigh the chicken. It was also my fault for accepting the $18, as I just wanted to leave the chaos. The moral of this story is to insist any takeout bbq meats purchased by the lb be weighed to determine its actual cost, no matter how busy they are. I hope the business makes this a permanent practice.
Otherwise, the soy sauce chicken was tender & delicious, as the sauce that came w/ it was perfectly made. I almost didn't get the sauce & had to remind James if one could be put into the take-out container as he was starting to close the container.
I'm sure Kevin's Kitchen has some delicious eats to offer but is going through opening chaos as a new business. My observations while I was there were:
* No one assigned for bbq meat take-out orders to determine cost & process payment. Check your receipts to ensure that the charges are correct.
* Menu state opening time is 7a, but actual opening time is 9:30a. Perhaps staff is not ready to take on an earlier start time?
* BBQ meats are less expensive per lb from opening until 2p, & then increases in prices thereafter. Many Yelpers have noted that bbq meats were sold out for dinner, which is understandable, as patrons had purchased the bbq meats at a lower price before 2p. Don't normally see this practice in a Chinese restaurant.
* All employees need to be trained so that they are all on the same page as to the expectations of management. If management does not let its employees know of its requirements, chaos will result, which it has here.
* Certain dishes are offered during both lunch & dinner but may be discounted during lunch. Check your receipts to ensure that the charges are correct.
There is so much potential in this new restaurant, as it is in a convenient location & offers many services. Perhaps these should be phased in to allow staff to be trained efficiently. As a result, customer service was spotty, as staff was in disarray. Staff needs to be more organized & trained.
The restaurant has undergone extensive renovations, & is clean & bright. Very loud, as everyone seems to be talking w/ all tables taken, & diners waiting for their orders.
Hours of operation are 9:30a to 8:30p daily. Free parking available in private lot that is shared w/ other businesses.
I would wait awhile until all the opening kinks are worked out. As the soy sauce chicken was delish, I look forward to trying their roast duck, char siu & roast pork. Yes, if take out, I'll be sure that items will be weighed! Congratulations to Kevin, & I wish him much success in this new business venture! read more
