Kevin's Kitchen is suffering from the waves of coverage via social media. Although it is great for them as a newly opened business to have so much exposure, they're definitely not ready to handle the volume and keep up with the quality that's been advertised.
My colleagues and I were interested to try it out after seeing all these posts from Instagram. We expected the place to be very busy and so we decided to order takeout and luckily, one of my colleagues were in the area that morning around 10:30 to physically be there to order 8 combo plates for a 12pm noon pick up. As expected, she stood in that line for about 10 minutes and placed the order, fully paid for.
I was the pick up guy. I arrived at noon and the place was packed, as expected. I went to pick up my order and it wasn't ready, which I somewhat also expected. No biggie. Had to wait for another 10 minutes or so and I got to observe how it was and let me tell you - it wasn't pretty.
The dining room was jam packed. For staffing there was a guy that mainly runs the register, a couple of food runner people, the main uncle who chops the char sui and poultries up, and a couple of people preparing and packing up the plates. At least that's all the people I saw in the frontline.
The customer line was almost out the door, about 8-10 deep right by a couple of dining tables. About half of the tables were waiting for their food with obvious looks of waiting for more than reasonable time. In the span of about 10 minutes I was waiting for my order, which was placed an hour and a half ago, I saw a few people leaving the line they were standing in becasue it wasn't really moving. Anyway I got my order of 8 plates left.
Now before I comment on the food, I do have to say that I get Chinese takeout ALOT. Like a couple times a week frequency around town anywehre between Asian Mix, Duck Kee, Duck Lee, Golden Duck, Sandy's Cafe, Wah Fung....I mean all over. I know my Chinese food.
Kevin's Kitchen is average. I'm going to give them benefit of a doubt before they're clearly being overrun by customers driven by Social Media and newness and I'm going to attribute the lack of quality to it. I ordered the Char Sui and Roast Duck combo and although it was fairly priced, the taste was really average and the portion looks like a complete mess and inconsistent. We ordered 8 plates and the portions ranges from regular looking like how you would expect from Asian Mix, to 4 pieces of Char Sui and 4 small pieces of ducks.
I'll give it another couple of months before trying Kevin's Kitchen again, hopefully by then the crowd would be subsided and I can get a more fair assessment on their taste, portion, and value of these favorite cruise of mine, Hong Kong food. read more
