    Paratha
    Ingrid H.

I had my birthday dinner here and everything we ate was remarkable. We started with the paratha. There are so many flavors in this dish. The herb salad on top adds light freshness and the cheese has a yogurty sourness. The paratha itself comes airy and puffed and dramatically deflates upon cutting open. The pastry is buttery and laminated. The daal at the bottom of the plate is rich and savory. All of these different flavors meld so perfectly in this incredibly well crafted dish. The char siu is seasoned so intensely- one more pinch of salt or sugar would be over the top. It's not melt in your mouth tender, but the slight chew allows the flavors to burst and evolve as you eat. The cucumber salad on the side was also intensely seasoned and flavorful. The pot pie was my least favorite but still incredibly delicious. It came out piping hot and the root vegetables inside were well cooked and not mushy. After the intense flavors of the first two dishes, I felt this could have used an additional pinch of salt. However had I eaten this first, I likely wouldn't have thought this. Everything was truly incredible, some of the best plates of food I've had in recent memory. However I found the portions to be quite small. We both left still hungry and got a snack on the way home. If you want a filling meal, expect to spend a lot as these three dishes ran us $80 with no drinks. The interior was lovely but it was quite crowded and loud- as to be expected with a popular new spot.

Do expect novelty (and make a reservation) but don't expect authentic Malaysian food This is more Malaysian meets America. Kari Ayam in a pot pie - definitely a classic twist. Came here on a Friday but made a mistake with reservation so ended up waiting for almost 2 hours. Good to order: - brisket char siu - beef rendang (like sloppy joe) The meh: - butter Roti: only have it if it you like oily croissant. The curry is also too watery. But if you want malaysian malaysian, skip this. -chicken pot pie: same feedback on curry, too water down

second time here in a week!! growing up in a chinese & malaysian household, the food here brings me back to my childhood. I used to go to Mayalsia as a kid and there would be a shop that made moonlight noodles and the moment i saw this on the menu - i knew i had to try it! it definitely didn't disappoint. Definitely recommend the Paratha, Abacus Seeds, Moonlight Kway Teow and hainese chicken!

Let's take an adventure to the Greenpoint food scene says my foodie partner. We want something quiet and a more neighborhood feel. Not many Malaysian restaurants to find with quality home cooked dishes in NYC. This place grabbed our attention and how uniquely dressed the traditional dishes were. This place serves brunch to our surprise with a sorted menu. First up was the appetizers: the paratha puff and the butter roti pancake The paratha puff was flaky, crisp and inflated for us to enjoy popping up the food balloon. The cream sauce on top and blackbean dipping sauce at the bottom dressed it nicely to compliment the flavors to not make it too dry. I found myself constantly scooping the bean sauce cleaning the plate. Presentation wise and taste wise we all worshipped ourselves around this dish doing a good job peaking our interests. The butter roti pancake was thicker than your usual roti canai. You do taste the butter swirled in this pancake. Same when tasting the curry dipping sauce. The chef did well with the added experimentation to these appetizers. Main course was the Moonlight Kway Teow flat noodles. This was our favorite anticipated dish of the brunch. Zesty saucy soy sauce marinated noodles with a crunch of scallions, tiger prawn shrimps with a runny egg yolk. I love a runny egg and cleaned this portion off the plate. My partner appreciated this and of course runny eggs can be nerve wracking for some. All parts of the dish were good and mainly the texture of the noodles were done right to ensure its success. The restaurant decor was lovely and lots of emphasis on authenticity. The red velvet and light green color combination theme was a fit. Lanterns, vases, plants, and even the durian wallpaper in the bathrooms were fun to look at to add to the aesthetic. Our waitress was so mindful and brought out the dishes and drinks with perfect timing to ensure the freshness for everything. This place didn't give us a hard time for any latecomers as long as advanced communication was given. Brunch was a nice surprise and next time we should return for dinner because that oxtail course dish is enough of a reason to come back.

First of all, shout out to the host who kindly answered my text when I let them know I was running 15 mins behind my reservation time, and warmly accommodated me as I rushed in-- kind of a rare extension of hospitality at a trendy nyc restaurant these days. The space was beautifully decorated and larger than I imagined it would be, with plush red booth seating and framed photos and paintings from Malaysia hanging on the walls, fringed cloth light fixtures drawing your gaze upwards towards the skylight. We were sat in the back next to the most well taken cared of fiddle leaf fig I've ever seen, and I'm on planttok. My family absolutely loves Malaysian food, as it's the closest approximation to Burmese food we can find in a city that's lacking it. It's so savory and a lot less sweet than Thai food, and less sweet is what I was conditioned to prefer. I grew up eating char kway teow, belacan green beans, and chendol, a shaved ice dessert from Nyona, an old Malaysian mainstay that used to have multiple locations in Brooklyn but now only has a standalone in Manhattan's chinatown. I was thrilled to read that the owner of this Malaysian restaurant grew up in Brooklyn eating a lot of Jamaican and Haitian food and wanted to combine some of these Caribbean flavors in their dishes. Malhaitian food is not a combo I ever imagined, but wow did they make it work. From the amazing paratha topped with an unexpected ingredient-- straciatella and topped with an actually spicy lentil sauce to the pineapple marinated charred cabbage, they really knew how to inject so much flavor into their dishes. Don't miss the chicken pot pie and char keow teow and be sure to finish the meal with their lone dessert-- a milo sundae that tastes so homemade in the best way. My only wish is for them to add cocktails to their menu. Loved the two chilled reds I tried, but I can only imagine how creative they could get with a cocktail program. Hope to see that someday!

Came here on a rainy day and the interior was the cutest, coziest vibe ever. They nailed the decor and setup. I didn't realize they had a separate brunch menu, so make you're timing your visit if you want to try certain items you see! The char siu was an amazing dish--so juicy and tender. For sure the table stand out. I'd consider everything else flavored really simple and clean. Which I suppose is fine for brunch but when I think of Malaysian cuisine, I don't typically think of/look for simple and clean. Extremely hospitable and kind workers though. Would be interested in coming back during dinner. Would be interested to see what cocktails they can whip up once they get a liquor license too.

Amazing! Came here after we heard about them from all the food places about a new up coming fusionish place and Kelang did not disappoint! We had the rendag, roasted cabbage, hokeen noodles and their penang to share. Everything tasted flavorful but not overpowering (which I know some places do). Service was fast, efficient, without being rushed and staff were kind and friendly. Ambiance reminded me of 1980s china, reminiscent to traditional chinese house decor. Plates and dishes were those thick nearly indestructible Chinese restaurant style fitting with wooden chairs. Will be back again to try some of their other dishes!

Finally a Malaysian restaurant in the Greenpoint / Williamsburg neighborhood! Kelang is a beautiful restaurant and I loved the decor and atmosphere (beautifully designed). We ordered the roti, paratha, cha siu, hokkien mee and moonlight kway teow. The standouts were definitely the cha siu and paratha. I'm impressed with the general atmosphere but honestly no dish really stood out to me outside of the paratha. Nonetheless, I would recommend giving it a shot!

This new Malaysian restaurant in Greenpoint offers a modern twist on traditional recipes with hints of Caribbean influence. The dim lit ambiance with red lanterns and lamps and red banquettes provides a cinematic glow. Their signature dish is the delicious paratha, a flaky flatbread topped with stracciatella cheese, red lentils, and a spicy sambal oil. Another standout dish is the rendang, their smoked oxtail slow cooked in lemongrass, chili, and toasted coconut paste which goes perfectly with a side of mushroom rice. The kway teow with thick rice noodles and prawns is less memorable as it is drenched in soy sauce, which overpowers the dish. Their limited cocktail menu features light drinks like the Russian dinosaur with coconut cream that goes well with the spicy dishes. The service is attentive and the prices are very reasonable.

I loved everything and will definitely come back again. Who knew Malaysian food was so good!

lovely new malaysian restaurant in greenpoint! super cute and great food -- we especially liked the charred cabbage and abacus seeds ! they're still new so no alcohol and only one dessert on the menu currently (malted sundae which we weren't in the mood for this time) but sounds like lots of fun dishes in the works. will definitely be back again soon :)

The restaurant itself is beautiful. Staff is nice. Food was tasty but extremely overpriced. The 1 sliver of chicken in the roti dish was laughable. Any other restaurant I've ordered roti at has given a bowl of curry... not a spoonful that allows you to have 1 taste. Disappointed

TL;DR version- Some high highs and some very low lows. Hot Figs was a fun app. By a mile, the soups…read morewere the favorites, so I would recommend the Pepián or Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo. Nice happy hour and a large chocolate drink selection I was at this unique Guatemalan (ish) restaurant a while back with one of my groups. I said "ish" because the menu has dishes from all over, ranging from sandwiches to BBQ ribs to Guatemalan and Mexican soups. It's out there, and even though not everything works that well, it's fun, and if you can't find something you want to order here, you probably shouldn't go out to restaurants. There was also live jazz music that night, which was loud but nice to listen to. Since it was happy hour, a bunch of us got drinks. I went with a maracuya margarita, which was decent; someone else had a jalapeño margarita, someone had a beer, and someone had a mojito. There were a few nice hot sauces on the table, with the red one reminding me of salsa macha as it had a smoky kick and a spicier green sauce reminiscent of ají verde. They gave us some complimentary blue corn chips and a very mild black bean dip, which was tasty enough and hard to complain about, as it was free. From the appetizers, we got the Hot Figs for $15.95, consisting of honey goat cheese, corn tortilla chips, and plum + pumpkin seeds. This was a unique and fun blend and reminded me more of something you would find in a wine bar. The mix of sweet and salty, with a bit of crunch from the seeds, was nice. This was good, and I would recommend it for a table rather than for a solo diner. There was also The Zingy Salad for $21.95, featuring zucchini spirals, yuzu, tomato, onion, cilantro, pumpkin seeds, and a jalapeño infusion. $18.95. The salad was fine with a bit of crunch and a mild spiciness. It was fine, though a bit wet, for lack of a better word. The best dishes of the night were the soups, which each had its own distinct flavor profile. My sight presence went to the Pepián for $21.95, consisting of chicken, pumpkin/sesame seeds, green tomatillo, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, carrots, chili coban/pasta/guaque, and potato + rice. There was plenty of tender chicken inside, with the soup having a nice roasted flavor with some spice and a bit of sourness. The potatoes and rice on the bottom added more sustenance to this dish. Almost equally delicious was the Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo for a dollar more with shredded chicken, tomato, black pepper, garlic, onions, peas, chickpeas, corn, achiote, chipotle, Monterey jack cheese, and crunchy blue corn tortilla chips. By comparison, this was a bit heartier, with the melted cheese and shredded tortilla chips inside, similar to soups found in Mexican cuisine. While I also liked the mix of veggies a bit more in this one, as it added a bit more texture, I still slightly preferred the flavor of the other soup, as I usually prefer a bit more spice. The rest of the food was fine. The TPC sandwich for $19.95 with chicken, peanut butter, coconut cream, ginger, cilantro, pickled carrots, and lime was fine. For the number of ingredients, I found it a bit sweet, likely from the cream and the peanut butter mix. The bread was nice, but it also fell apart. It came with a nice side salad with a good vinaigrette. The most expensive at $24.95 were the Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs, consisting of baby back ribs with rice and beans. The ribs were almost a bit too tender as they lacked any bite, which was nice, but the sauce was a bit too generic tasting, reminding me of Sweet Baby Ray's or something similar. The rice and beans were standard. This was also OK. Next came some dessert. There was first the $12.95 Rosemary Churros served with dulce de leche & chocolate dips. While I'm not sure if it worked, the rosemary did add a unique smell and a bit of flavor, and at least it wasn't generic. The churros themselves were hot, and the sauces were standard, with my preference being the dulce de leche. I also ordered a Champurrado for $7.95, which was fine. It wasn't as thick as I expected, though perhaps the style is a bit different than the champurrados I rarely buy from Mexican street carts. The chocolate flavor was very nice, though, and I like that it wasn't too sweet. Another person got a $4 Alfajor, which I got a bite of, which was standard. This place is a bit hard to rate. The two soups were wonderful, I liked the appetizers, and I found a couple of the other dishes just OK. Overall, it was a good meal, but I'm not craving to go back. This would be the perfect 3.5, but I'll round up as that doesn't exist.

The sandwich was very well made with a nice crisp panko crusting that didnt feel heavy on the oil, and yet still managed to have a light airy egg inside. The eggs rothko was buttery and flavorful but still managed to not feel too heavy. The broiled tomatos on the side were a nice touch to contrast the egg and toast from the main dish.
