I got the two course lunch for restaurant week at $39 after tax and tip. I selected the only vegetarian options - the corn salad and the pad thai. Everything was overpoweringly sweet. The corn salad had a heavy hit of tartness to cut through and a small portion which made it edible. The pad thai had a bit of a creative format - they used an egg noodle type dough that they made into a ribbony pancake and topped the inside with fried rice noodles, almost like sev. However, the sauce was incredibly sugary and totally overwhelmed any other flavor, and there was no vegetarian choice for protein. Very disappointing overall. read more

Kru has been on my list for a while - between the Michelin Guide mention and the James Beard nomination, I knew I had to check it out. I came with my boyfriend and we weren't super hungry so we sat at the bar (bartender was friendly and attentive). We kept it light with a couple of cocktails and the steak tartare appetizer (with cured egg yolk, spice, bird's eye chili, and crispy tripe). The dish was beautifully presented and definitely unique compared to other steak tartares I've had. While I usually personally prefer a more minimal approach where the meat really shines, I still appreciated the creativity and bold flavors. The cocktails were solid, and the vibe really stood out. The space has a cool, moody yet chic feel, with industrial elements with intimate lighting and botanical touches. It feels stylish but cozy at the same time - perfect for a date night or a night out with friends. Even though we only sampled a small part of the menu, I'd absolutely be open to coming back to try more dishes. This modern Thai/Thai fusion spot in Williamsburg is a good spot for a date night. The interior is intimate, and cozy. Service here is good. I came here for a group dinner with three friends and we ordered their steak tartare, lamb shank, and branzino (they have a fairly small menu). Everything was pretty solid. I enjoyed their steak tartare and thought that it was really unique that they paired the dish with fried tripe. Notes of lemongrass and other spices were really strong, reminding me of Southeast Asia. The lamb shank was flavorful and the meat was so tender. And, the branzino was also delicious. I would note that the portions were a lot smaller than we expected, and everything was a bit on the pricier side. Overall, a nice restaurant for some good food but I would personally prefer more authentic, casual Thai food. read more

Omg I absolutely loved this place. A modern, inventive take on Thai food! Highlights were the squid salad (so fresh with an amazing, lick your fingers clean sauce), the lamb (must order - our favorite dish of the night and I usually don't even like lamb), the crispy honey soy pork belly, the crispy noodles, and the Thai rice omelette with the crab add-on. Others loved the special Thai pot pie but it was too spicy for me (I'm a baby when it comes to spice). The beef tongue was also not bad but very spicy. The only dishes I wouldn't recommend are the lobster tartare (which was weirdly the waiter's rec - the thick fried seaweed was unpleasant and I didn't love the lobster, which was lightly poached) and the bone marrow (massive but some parts lacked a little flavor and overall was just average). Beautiful modern Thai restaurant in Greenpoint :) this place is so beautiful, open-wide nice welcoming warmth. They have many Japanese Sake options and I appreciate that. Absolutely amazing dinner at Kru! My husband surprised me with a dinner reservation for our anniversary dinner and it was so special. The combination of flavors was like a symphony in my mouth. The drinks were perfectly paired with the food. We started with a sparkling Reisling with our apps. Later I had a rosé sake with floral notes from Paris that I am still dreaming about. My favorite dish of the night was the crispy noodles, not only was it delicious but it was so incredibly pretty and special, topped with small edible flowers. This place has been on our list for a while in our never ending quest to find the best Thai food but ultimately don't know that it lived up to expectations. I'll start by saying that the ambience is super cool with the open garage concept that you just walk into. The decor feels like someone's living room in a way. And the service is super friendly. We went late so it was pretty quiet in a good way. The menu itself is not so large but is somewhat interesting sounding in its diversity. We started with the lobster tartare. It's billed as one bite but can definitely be two (which made me feel better for the price) and it's a fairly good bite. The jackfruit salad was pretty good- I can see why everyone seems to order it. I don't know that the flavoring of the jackfruit stood out as anything over the shallot but it was still a good dish. The beef tongue curry we were warned would be spicy and it certainly is. I do feel as if maybe the bowl was too large for the amount of food you get because it looked a little sparse? I don't know that the meat itself really added anything to the dish and maybe a different cut would have been better. Crab omelette we probably could have skipped- didn't taste very much crab and it wasn't anything otherwise special. The branzino surprised me as I'm usually not a fan even though we get it all the time. I came here to begin a long night of birthday celebrations. The vibe was so cute and loved the decoration. We chose this spot cause it was close to the bar and the menu looked delicious. We sat and our waiter was not the best, it honestly really impacted our dinner and we wondered what was going on. It took awhile to get our drinks and before we could get anything more or say that someone else also wanted a menu to order something different he was off and away. Nevertheless, we ordered our food, we ordered 3 apps and 2 entrees. Two of the apps were the best bite we had out of everything. The crab meat tartlet and the lobster tartare. KRU came onto the Northern Williamsburg dining scape touting 100 year old recipes from Thailand with plenty of soul. They promptly slayed the media circuit, receiving a lot of buzz, despite a saturated Thai restaurant scene here. While these accolades had my hopes set quite high, my meal felt not completely aligned with my palate (lol very diplomatic speak, I know). The melon chicken soup was the dish I regretted ordering most, served in a tepid soup and chicken that had barely any flavor but a sharing dish they charge a pretty penny for. I preferred the cauliflower salad's cruciferous crunch against the tomato sauce and a sweet and savory jackfruit salad made even tastier with crispy fried shallots on top. Bonus points for the happy hour rose at $10, which I'll happily toast to again when it feels like rose weather again. Booked a last minute reversion for 7pm on Sunday for two and it wasn't an issue at all. There was a lot of availability. I was a bit surprised with a James Beard restaurant. We ordered the salad bite of the day for two - it had some white fish and roe. Then the crabmeat relish came out. The sauce was really good but quite spicy, not everyone can handle that spice. It was still bearable for me but my friend said it's not enjoyable for her if she can only think about the spice. I thought the flavor was really good. The Cornish hen was recommended by the waiter, actually everything was recommended by the waiter. This was also too spicy for my friend but again it had really good flavor for me. Maybe a tad too salty but just a tad. Overall great flavor and meat came right off. This also came with one bowl of white rice that was enough for two people. Then came the pork belly. It was a side for about it $10 and it was a decent portion, also super flavorful and I don't think this dish was spicy. Overall with a salad bite each, the crab relish, the entree and a side of pork belly were filling enough for the two of us. We still ordered a dessert each to close out the meal and they only had one dessert a the peach Melba. The dessert was not our favorite, probably the worst way to close out the meal. I don't think we were a fan of the fermented yogurt... so will not order that again. And the dessert just wasn't that impressive in terms of complexity and flavor profile. We were disappointed with this dish. The service was a tad slow - think they had two wait staff for the whole restaurant that night so while it wasn't a full house it also wasn't empty so that resulted in slower service. While it was slow, it was good though and we basically took the waiters recommendation for all the dishes except for the dessert. Restrooms were clean, spacious and nice. Area was a bit odd and off a random road. We had no issues with parking, parked right in front of the restaurant. With most authentic Asian cuisines, you are bound to find a multitude of shellfish sprinkled into all their dishes one way or another. Kru is no exception. Don't be fooled by the restaurant's modern living room interior, this is no place to take your vegan friend. My partner and I arrived a little early for our reservation on a Friday night at 7pm. Fortunately, our table was ready for us and we were seated immediately. Service is friendly and our waiter recommended us a balanced riesling to go with our meal. The real awkward moment was when my partner mentioned that he had a shellfish allergy and everything with the exception of three or four dishes all contained shellfish. Oof. Regardless, we made it work and my partner got the vegan cauliflower steak with roasted coconut milk bbq curry while I opted for the beef tongue curry. We shared the jackfruit salad and the peach melba. For a vegan dish, the jackfruit salad was full of flavor with sweet and savory elements and a nice crunch from the fried shallots. The cauliflower steak with roasted coconut milk bbq curry was just as delightful and creamy and the cauliflower was nicely roasted. I could only imagine how great it would taste with the cornish hen. The beef tongue curry was delicious but definitely hot. I was able to eat most of it but this is not a curry for those who can't handle the heat. The peach melba was a great way to finish the meal with its unique umami sweetness and fruity raspberry syrup. There is no doubt that the food is delicious, but the menu is heavy on the red meat and almost all the dishes contain shellfish. The red meat isn't a big issue, but I wished there was some indication on the menu that most of the menu would contain shellfish as to save myself the embarrassment of taking my partner to a place with limited options. Chef Ohm, the founder of Kru (and of Fish Cheeks as well), trained under the legendary David Thompson basically the OG of non-Thai Thai chefs. He took Thompson's Nahm, one of our favorite spots in Bangkok to #1 on Asia's Top 50 list so the man knows his stuff. At Kru, don't expect your usual Pad Thai or watery curries; the food's got serious style. Yes you can taste the sweet, sour, salty and spicy combinations that make it unmistakably Thai, but this is all fancy. We did their 3 course for $45 Restaurant Week menu (with an upcharge on the salmon and the lamb) tried the following - Crabmeat Tartlet - a small portion of crab meat nicely stacked on a canapé. The crab meat was chunky, fresh and barely a hint of coconut cream and thai chili paste and fish sauce with tamarind allowing the crab meat to shine. The portion was truly just a bite and we were left wanting for a little more. Lobster Tartare - this was lobster meat mixed in with some tomato adding the umami flavor on a nori strip and was quite unique. Was adequate for 2 bites. Squid Salad - was a Thai take on ceviche. Thin squid strips marinating in a lime juice, cilantro, chili dressing punctuated with thinly shaved lemongrass refreshing on a hot summer day. Salmon Watercress salad - norweigian salmon over red watercress leaves toppped with salmon roe. The refreshing Thai dressing with a little lime, chili, fried onion and galangal made for an excellent foil to the fatty salmon. Roasted Branzino - The branzino was deboned, wrapped in a banana leaf with coconut cream dill and a mild red curry paste. Their take on the steam fish custard 'Hor Mok Pla' and was topped with tomato slices which was a bit unusual. Lamb Shank with Massaman reduction. - One of the best lamb dishes I've ever had. The entire lamb shank had been roasted to perfection - the meat was just perfectly cooked. Seemed nice and crusty on the outside but one light poke at it and the moist meat just separated from the bone and collapsed on to the rich unctuous curry. We usually find lamb rather gamey but the meat here had none of that funky taste and the rich complex Massaman reduction took it to the next level. I was sooo very pleased and I wasn't so sure I would be given how unique the menu was but with our large order of different items to try I loved everything and found a new favorite dish that I'll need to enjoy at least twice a year: the pink pineapple white strawberry sweet savory appetizer. Wowzer! It was like the fanciest concoction with the beautiful presentation you don't want to eat then as soon as you go for the first bite you already want to order more and decide to kick the presentation to the curb. I'd rate KRU four and a half stars. Creative Thai restaurant with an extensive beverage selection and a trendy atmosphere. One of the few Thai restaurants that excels as a cocktail bar too. Full bar with some interesting whiskey options. Lots of wines including an intriguing variety of sakes. Good offering of local, craft beers too though I don't think any were on draft. I had a couple glasses of sake which made for a fun pairing with Thai food. Sake tends to have sweet and melon flavors which balance the spicy and bold flavors of sons of the dishes we ordered. We started with the lobster tartare bites. These were served on a fried piece of seaweed. It was very citrusy. Each order had three-ish bites. Next, we had the leaf wraps which has a filling with shrimp or fish flakes and red caviar. A pretty eclectic bite with mint prevailing. We opted for the jackfruit salad as a small plate. This was my favorite dish of the evening. Big spicy flavor with any mouth burn or nasal impact making it an easy eat for those cautious of spicy items. This was a six bite dish. While the first few items were petite, the main course was definitely hefty portion. We shared the beef tongue massaman curry. The menu states it's meant to be shared for two and I think it could even be stretched for three. I've never seen a beef tongue curry, so it immediately stood out to me. The beef tongue was cooked perfectly. It's a thinner piece of the cow which can be easy to over cook. Fortunately, the texture and doneness were on point! The curry also included potatoes and ultra tender onion pearls. The curry was heavy on fish sauce. I definitely recommend ordering this dish. Service was attentive. We sat at the bar where four different stars members were floating around making it super easy to catch someone's attention. Pacing of the food was good. We opted to visit for the $30 2-course lunch, and for starters we split the crab curry deviled egg and steak tartare. Both were tasty, and I especially wanted more of the deviled egg, which was flavorful with a nice little kick. For entrees, I got the stuffed half branzino with curried rice. The fish was okay but not as tender as I would've liked, and there were so many bones that I couldn't fully enjoy the crispy skin. I was missing sauce and more of an explosion of flavors that I associate with Thai food. The rice was also soft and sticky, and I wasn't a big fan of the texture. My friend's roasted coconut milk BBQ "golae" Cornish hen, on the other hand, was delicious. The meat was perfectly cooked and tender, and the sauce was comforting and a good blend of sweet and savory. I kept stealing spoonfuls for my fish and rice. Separately from RW, I wanted to try something from their regular menu. I'd been eyeing the beef tongue curry, but decided to pivot after our waiter warned us it was full-on Thai spicy. Instead, we ordered the crab meat relish, which was surprisingly heavy and a little salty. It reminded me of nacho cheese. I thought the sauce overpowered the crab, but the assortment of fresh veggies that accompanied the dip did help to cut through the strong flavor. We also tried the complimentary desserts, collaborations between Kru and Caffè Panna: watermelon sorbet and sweet fermented rice yogurt ice cream. The sorbet was a bit mild and lacking that full blast of sweet, refreshing watermelon flavor, but it was still a good cool treat to end the meal with. I stopped by Kru during Restaurant Week and had the most amazing dinner. Everything was truly spectacular and it was a great way to try a bunch of their dishes for $45. I started off with the deviled egg, which was one of the best ones that I've had in my life - it was spicy and the curry flavors really elevated this staple. Next up was their steak tartare - it had a delicious mix of flavors, and the egg was done perfectly. It was a bit over salted, but still extremely tasty. The stand out was their stuffed branzino - this is a really special entree and features fresh Branzino stuffed with yummy curried rice. Will definitely be returning for this! Everything was on the spicier side, but not unmanageable - their mix of chilis elevated the flavors of the dishes. I also sampled their fermented rice ice cream which had a super unique flavor - tangy and sweet at the same time. A very sleek and good looking restaurant. It focuses on Thai fusion, and I think the main pro about the food is its presentation. Everything was very pretty to look at. For this price point thats very important! To be honest, the food felt a little less authentic, but it was still good. It leaned more toward fusion than traditional thai. I had the salmon roe leaf-wrapped salad bite, red curry rice ball and pork belly dish. The pork belly was incredibly succulent and I think my favorite! The service was great. Quick, efficient and friendly. And always ready to do a wine refill- no complaints there! I came here for Restaurant week and for $45, I would say that I'm very pleased with the food and service. We got to try one " bite", one "small plate" and one "main" each from the menu. For the bites, we got the deviled egg and the salad bite, and that salad bite, my GOD. It was such a dark horse on the menu, because while I expected it to be the blandest thing on the menu, it actually ended up being the best thing that both my sister and I ordered. The deviled egg was just fine? But the salad bite, my god, such an explosion of flavors. Sour, savory, pungent and tastes almost like salted egg yolk with crackling in a lettuce wrap. Super good and unassuming. Our small plates were the steak tartare and the cold noodles. The former was intensely herbaceous, which feels like the opposite of most steak tartare I've had. It works pretty well with the crackling too. The cold noodles were also super interesting. An absolute ton of flavor combinations that are difficult to describe but work well together. And the shrimp is very tender. Our mains were the wagyu hamburg steak green curry and the stuffed branzino and both were quite good as well. I gotta give it to the branzino though, super tender fish and the stuffed rice was very flavorful. Simple filling but very tasty. Know what you are getting into. This is not your traditional homestyle, hearty, stuff your face Thai food. It is also not your gloppy, soggy pad thai, watered down curry, run-of-the-mill diabetes inducing Americanized Thai place. This is bougie, high end fine dining Thai food. There's a reason they made the Michilin Guide. Expect fresh, high quality ingredients and gourmet flavors that you will savor during a nice night out. Food menu is only one page (typical of a fine dining establishment), followed by pages of a full wine list, cocktails and full bar selections. For appetizers, ordered the Steak Tartare and the Squid. The Steak Tartare was the reason for coming after salivating over the images seen online. It did not disappoint. The fish sauce cured egg yolk was silky and decadent. The steak was fresh and packed with the complex flavors of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and other herbs. It packed a good amount of heat, I assume from the bird's eye chili's and ma kwan peppers (which apparently is a relative to the Sichuan peppercorn that grows in Northern Thailand with similar tongue numbing properties). It was served with crispy beef tripe to scoop the tartare onto, which added a nice crunch and good savory taste (wish the dish had come with more tripe pieces, but there was the option on the menu to order more). The squid appetizer was light and refreshing, again with nice herby flavors and just the right amount of heat. For mains, ordered the Grilled Chicken and the Branzino. The chicken was a fairly generous sized half chicken with coated with a delicious mildly sweet and spice filled (but not not spicy) yogurt sauce. It paired well with the cucumber raita sauce on the side. Chicken was perfectly cooked, meat was moist and not dry. The Branzino came as a curry custard that was grilled in a banana leaf, giving it nice a smoky charred flavor. The curry ingredients tasted fresh and authentic. Restaurant week menu is pretty good. It has some popular dishes that people can enjoy. Like bone marrow, lobster tartar, branzino pork belly, cold noodle salad. Portion is quite generous. We ordered some vegetable from regular Menu - they told us the dish can't be served because the chef felt it wasn't up to his standard. We really appreciated it as it showed there's a standard and not just about making money. Their decor is very cute, very modern with a cozy touch. One thing people have to understand though about this place is that it's Thai, but it's not very traditional. It's modern Thai. This place doesn't have Thai tea or mango sticky rice which is something my friends and I kind of expected them to have as a Thai place. read more

5 stars. The service is impeccable. We tried raw beef with egg for appetizer. It came with fish skin chips. So delicious. Then we tried lobster curry with fresh veggies. Also the chef sent some complementary dishes and drinks were on the house. I had drink as you can see the photo. I loved the presentation of all the dishes and even the drinks. My bf and I go to the gym across the street and always pass this restaurant but it's either closed or packed. Last night we walked by and said "let's try again" and this time success! A table was open for two for walk-in. Food was amazing: perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of spice, salt and umami. The decor inside is cute with low lights for a date night but also just enough so youre not squinting to see the food or menu. We ordered the lobster tartare, squid, steak tartare, bone marrow, beef tongue and their limited quantity pork belly. That pork belly was cooked to perfection. It was so tender but the skin was crunchy and delicious. The dessert we wanted (thai tearamisu -their spelling not mine) was sold out but that just means we have to go back and try it. Donating a paycheck to rent and devoting faith to Williamsburg's monotheistic L train makes you wonder if living in Bushwick's millennial cousin, WillyB, is justified. My boyfriend and I reside here and our credit card transactions lend credence to the fact that WB has an abundance of exceptional restaurants and bars. Kru has made an appearance on our most recent Chase statement. Tucked in the cusp of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, lies Kru. It is also sandwiched between two bowling alleys and a billiards bar, making it a great pre-activity spot. Partner and co-founder of Manhattan's Fish Cheeks, Chef Ohm, has opened a contemporary Thai restaurant with unique and beautiful re-imaginations of authentic Thai dishes that even pad kee mao wouldn't know what hit him. We paid our first visit in the heat of summer on a Friday night. We made a Resy the night before with ease. The open air concept let us enjoy the late sunset backdrop, but also central air conditioning. The interior has a chic industrial vibe and displays their curated selection of global wines. Let's cut to what you actually care about: Drinks: 1. PASSION FRUIT MEZCAL MARGARITA ($17): Very refreshing-- not too sweet, not too strong, with a gentle chili kick 2. JADE SCORPION ($12): A pilsner, with the sting from sichuan peppercorns, but not excessive to the point of being aggressive. Apps: SALMON ROE LEAF-WRAPPED SALAD BITE ($7 per bite) The smoked salmon roe decorated the smoked whitefish, both of which were brine-y and salty, but are toned down by the battling forces of acid (finger limes) and fat (coconut caramel sauce), all served in the vehicle of the neutral betel leaf. Highly recommend as a starter! [Think elevated keto bro Thai chicken lettuce wrap] SQUID SALAD ($15) A palate cleanser, if you will, with a refreshing cocktail of lime juice, lemongrass, ginger, cilantro, garlic, shallot, and chili. It was nice to have a lighter dish amidst the creamier accompaniments; however, I do not see this as a show stopper. CRAB MEAT RELISH ($24): When I hear relish, I imagine diced pickles lathered on a hot dog, but this was far from; however, just as delectable. I highly recommend ordering this!!! A bowl filled with crab meat swimming in chili miso, coconut cream, and tamarind water, paired with a halved soft-boiled egg and vegetables to dip. Don't worry, there's a spoon so you can apply relish to mouth directly. ROASTED COCONUT MILK BBQ HALF CORNISH HEN ($25) This sweet chili laden poultry dish was so moist and had a nice tickle of friendly spice and sweetness. Also very much recommend. I don't know if you can tell, but we loved the place! I have a lot of favorites in Williamsburg, but it was not until last Friday that I had a favorite Thai place. Came here for restaurant week as it was one of the more reasonably priced dinner options. 3 courses for $45 and each was delicious. I had the lobster tartare bite, bone marrow, and beef tongue massaman curry. They were all very flavor and rich. I even took some home as they were also filling. I had the SE X SW Sour to drink -- also so good. It was a rare cool summer evening so the floor to ceiling doors were open and there was a nice breeze. The restaurant is beautiful, not too busy for a 7pm res, and they don't seat you too close to people. Service was good. read more

Kru is delicious with a menu that differentiates itself from other Thai restaurants. On an exploration with a friend, we came by on a Tuesday evening and ordered a little bit of everything. The interior is beautiful and calming. We started with the young jackfruit salad (vegetarian option) - tangy and meaty. Then the whitefish dip, served with a softboiled egg and vegetables - savory and packs a punch. These would be great starters for a larger group. My favorite dish was the Kaeng Hung Le, Pork Belly - sweet and tender with a chili kick. We also added a side of Khao Ping rice in a banana leaf, which my friend was a huge fan of, a mix of pork, glass noodle, shrimp paste, and pickled papaya. Our night ended with tea for two and ice cream peach melba. The servers were also awesome. We walked away super satisfied. read more

The thing with Thai food is that it is either too salty or too sweet. Soothr does a great job in keeping that balance in check, however Kru was way too salty. The ikura leaf app was probably the best little bite out of all we ordered. Props to that! read more

Personally my experience here was super interesting . I loved the ambiance . Very modern and pretty . Our server was extremely extremely sweet as pie . He really explained everything . Any questions we had he answered, he was amazing . Now the food and menu . When I saw the menu I was underwhelmed, because i just wish there was more options for vegans and pescatarians but that's personal right that's my fault . What's cool about this place is that they switch the menu often . So I got the coconut milk bbq cauliflower steak . Now coming out I was a little scared because it was green lol but the sauce ? The curry was so freaking good . So good but the cauliflower without the sauce was just charred cauliflower . I just felt if you're going to charge someone 25 for cauliflower it should be so well seasoned through out . I think personally I would be back to try a different dish . It's very innovative and different so don't expect to pad Thai or Thai Basil friend rice or spring rolls (I did ) it's a very different take on Thai food and very modernized . I wasn't sad leaving but I was hungry lol . The sauce and the rice was so good though . If I could pack up the sauce or have that with some sort of protein amazing . This place is relatively busy but we didn't have reservations and we got seated immediately. read more

What a beautifully well thought out decorated space. If you look closely, the gallery wall is glittered with recipes and pictures of ingredients that highlights the roots of this restaurant. I appreciated the comfortably spaced tables and low noise level so we can have an easy conversation with our party. Our server was very helpful and relaxed who helped guide us through the menu and acknowledged our dietary restrictions. We ended up with the crabmeat relish to start which I would describe as an elevated and healthier "crab dip" but infinitesimally better. Must order appetizer. The sauce from the coconut milk Cornish hen was so good we made sure to not leave any behind and finished it with our rice. While the dry rubbed fileted branzino was a great counterbalance to have a dry and wet entree on the table. We left thoroughly full and it is extremely convenient that street parking in the neighborhood is very easy. read more
