Went to falansai on a Sunday evening and it was a pretty cozy experience. Food was pretty good, we got the tuna tartar, turnip cake curry, short rib In pho broth, and skewers. I honestly liked them all. They were also nice enough to give a free desert for one of our birthdays! I do think they could've had a more extensive drink menu but they are a fairly new establishment so there's still time for that. Overall, would recommend and would come back again! read more

Overall, the a la carte menu is pretty small, so definitely check it out before you commit to eating here. Pineapple pork fried rice - Aside from the hollowed out pineapple that it came in, the presentation was a little weak (mostly rice, and very small pieces of toppings). The rice lacked color, which ultimately, did make the dish lean on the bland side. I did not think it had enough wok hei (flavor and aroma that comes from being cooked on a wok). We did like that the pork was lap Cheong (Chinese sausage) 3/5 Heritage 5 spice ribs - This was the only winner. Excellent flavor. 4/5 Pork Croqueta Banh mi - Despite the restaurant being Mexican Vietnamese fusion, we were pretty surprised to receive the sandwich that we did. It was pretty different from a traditional banh mi except for the veggies. I was not a fan of the sesame seed bun. Came to Falansai for the Lunar Dac Biet Collab with Chef Clarice and Christine experience and was looking to enjoy some good Viet fusion food. Unfortunately for me, it missed the spot for me considering the Vietnamese influence in the dishes were very little IMO. I would say this is bit of a trendy place to say you've been here and overall was not enough to convince me to come back here for some good Asian grub in the future. I went to this excellent Vietnamese place with some Mexican influences a good while back as per most of my recent reviews. We were originally going to go here in a pretty big group but then there were major issues on the L train where the other folks from Manhattan weren't able to go and some other people got delayed heavily. They were very understanding as it seems a lot of people there couldn't show up and the staff in general was very friendly. Anyway, as we had less people (2 originally which became three instead of the original six I believe,) our menu changed heavily of course. The prices have gone up by comparison with some dishes also getting a slightly different description or with a different ingredient which I'll note. To drink I had their Vietnamese Iced Coffee/Cà Phê Sữa Đá which was $6 and listed from Nguyen Coffee Supply which was pretty good though I prefer the Vietnamese place by me which uses a different better coffee brand. The best of the appetizers and possibly the best dish of the night was the Confit Duck Necks listed as sweet sour, spicy, salty, umami, and fall off the bone tender for $18 which is the same price now. It was good enough that we ordered a second round once the other person showed up. The duck necks had a fun texture with an addictive sweet and slightly sour sauce to them almost BBQ like but not exactly. The bit of pickled onions on there was a good touch and some welcome extra sourness. If you don't mind getting a bit dirty, it's probably easier to eat these by hand as it's a bit hard to get the meat off otherwise but it's well worth it. While waiting, we also ordered the Dad's Egg Rolls which were listed with Berkshire pork, wood ear mushrooms, lettuce wraps, and fish sauce vinaigrette which were $12 back then and now $15. I'm also pretty positive that it used to be a mix of shrimp and pork because I remember it having a distinctly bounciness as there was a whole shrimp inside. Anyway, they were very tasty and would probably still be tasty even without the shrimp now but they were more notable prior. The other guy got the Turnip Cake 'Banh Mi' for $16 which isn't on the current menu which I had a little bit of. I remember it having a distinct sauce on the side maybe that tasted a bit fermented which had fermented bean curd/chao (or furu in Chinese spots) if I recall correctly which added a nice flavor and he liked the texture. For main dishes, we got two. Better of the two was actually the cheaper one which was the Blazed and Glazed which used to be listed as Berkshire pork shoulder, salsa verde, herb bomb, and farm egg for $28 which is now $34 and made with beef instead. Outside of the salsa verde, the shoulder had a preparation very similar to pork chops found in most Vietnamese restaurants with and there definitely being some lemongrass flavor let alone the rice and egg that usually comes with the other dish (I presume it's based on Sườn Nướng.) The salsa verde was a novel extra touch but I generally didn't bother with it as the park was good enough on its own. We otherwise got the Five Spice Lamb Neck listen under the XL dishes toasted chili, avocado, refried beans, sobre masa tortillas, and salsa for $48. This dish definitely has the strongest Mexican influence outside of hints of five spice. The lamb was pretty big and was very tender going well with the pillowy tortillas from Sobre Masa. The flavors weren't as bold as the other dishes but it was solid. The food here is tasty. They lean more on the Vietnamese side than the Mexican side which I don't mind as the flavors were solid and the one dish that was more on the Mexican side was likely my least favorite. They unfortunately either got rid of or changed up some dishes I had when I went there but I'd go back likely for either the Dac Biet or the Super Dac Biet as both sound delicious. Low 4 read more

Service was phenomenal. Warm, friendly, the type of person you'd want to hang out with after their shift. Good suggestions and very patient. The food was definitely good- the green curry was incredibly flavorful (and VERY SPICY). The egg roll was one of the best I've ever had. The hyped duck necks are now being served as tostadas. I think this makes it conceptually easier to eat than when it looks like a neck, but the flavor is so great that I think I liked it better on its own without the avocado and fixings. The coconut chia dessert was perfect and so good at balancing the spice from the curry. Also loved the tangy vermicelli salad. The honey glazed pork shoulder was ok- the char was nice and it was sweet but nothing to write home about. I like my meat heavily glazed, not just a hint of it. Large portion size though. And lastly the tamale was pretty boring and flavorless. Happy hour $10 wines until 7pm. Very warm, trendy ambiance. I'd give this restaurant a 3.5 overall. Came here on a date night with my partner and we decided to go with the "Dac Biet" family style tasting menu. With this we got a truckload of delicious food (see the pictures), all filled with delicious flavors and the right amount of spice (seriously every dish had some level of heat that paired perfectly with the protein or vegetable it was cooked / presented with). You can definitely get a taste of the Mexican / vietnamese fusion! One qualm was that we were asked up front around food preferences and stated we preferred dishes without cilantro (I know I know - it's Mexican & vietnamese), but they told us they could accommodate us - so we were happy. However multiple dishes came out with cilantro in or on them (even after we politely pointed it out the first time). Usually not a big deal, but after spending $200+ on food and them asking us upfront, seemed a bit off. Also, it was very easy to get here (a few blocks off the L), the ambiance was very cozy yet fun, and the service was friendly and attentive! While all the food was delicious and we left very satisfied and full, I think for the price, the choose your own adventure (e.g; picking a la carte) is the way to go, and we will def do that next time! Creative Vietnamese restaurant. We came on a Saturday night and were given an hour wait. We found a table nearby, but we returned on a Thursday night and were seated immediately. Menu is super approachable. There are about a dozen items a la carte or you can opt for a tasting menu with an optional wine pairing. Big menu list too with a handful of wines by the glass. All the wines by the glass were intriguing options. We decided to go the a la carte approach. We started the duck neck. Probably one of the most laborsome items I've had. I'd say crawfish are probably the only food I've had that is more arduous to eat. I've never had duck neck before, so it was interesting to try. It reminded me of oxtail but super tiny and more challenging to eat. I liked the tenderness but I'm gonna stick to the other parts of duck in the feature. Next we had the dumpling soup. This was excellent! Big, plumpy dumplings filled with fresh ingredients. Flavorful broth and some lightly cooked bok choy and cabbage to give a bit of bitterness and earthiness. After that came out the fried rice. This was one of their signature items. Just a big, homey bowl of fried rice. Super savory. At this point, I was truthfully full. We also ordered the fisherman's noodles. I only had a few spoonfuls of the broth which was delicious. Nicely balanced flavor. There were some tiny (I believe Thai) chilis. I decided to try one and it absolutely roasted me. Nice big chunks of various seafood. Big cakes noodles. Another super comfy dish. All in all, food was great. Definitely not a traditional Vietnamese restaurant but one I'd highly recommend. Wine selection was awesome. Service was attentive, helpful, and accommodating. So so disappointed. I have no idea how this place got such high reviews. Dad's egg rolls- $12 two small spring rolls, $6 each, no particular flavor tasted very generic. Mixed greens with dried shrimp in lobster broth- waiter described it at an umami bomb. I have never had pea shoots taste so bland. The dried shrimps had no flavor (how is that even possible?!), lobster broth tasted of hot water. This was by far the worst dish. I dumbed the left over fish sauce from the egg rolls in it to give it some flavor. Monk fish in spicy red curry- was the best dish bc it was the only one with flavor. Once again overpriced but the little monkfish that was in there (5 slices) was tasty and well cooked. Better even then the monkfish was the few pieces of chopped mushrooms in it bc they had a grill char on them (they were not whole ones just little chipped up pieces). Also in the dish was a few pieces of a green veg that looked like broccolini but I'm sure was something else. The curry was coconut based and tasted like an average Thai curry but was at least spicy. Beef Skewers- they put just enough ground beef on the skewer to cover the wood stick, the value on this dish was laughable. There was barely any beef on the damn stick it was so thin. Came with a cut up lamb sausage which was tasty but came on a bowl of plain rice glass noodles. That dish we ate half of and threw the rest away. $130 down the train on a bad meal. I'm so disappointed and sad bc this place I read was excellent. I think it's a typical example of a place opened up awhile ago got great reviews and stopped trying. When you arrive at Falansai, you have the sensation you are eating at a friends house on a Thursday evening. The interior is simple, thoughtful, and the staff are welcoming but not overly eager. No frills, pleasant, and comfortable. We came here for an adventurous early Friday dinner (we are parents so early dinners are the jam right now). We were excited to try this fusion and Vietnamese and Mexican. We ordered the sake and a rose wine and decided on the Dac Biet tasting menu. My partner asked me if we should order a La carte, but I happen to enjoy going on the chefs journey. Dac Biet it is! See the photos for the dishes - it was a simple, filling, scatter plot of flavors. We were pleasantly full by the end, with enough desire left for dessert. The most striking pairing for me was the lemongrass sausage in the sambal sauce. The flavors went against each other nicely, and sort of woke up my brain. It was a pair I've never had before, so I feel like a new neural connection was made! Overall a lovely place to eat, and despite what other reviews say, you should do the Dac Biet your first time. We were looking to eat Vietnamese around the neighborhood and this place showed up in our search so we decided to give it a try. When we entered, we were immediately greeted and seated. The menu was little confusing and there were not much selections compared to authentic Vietnamese restaurant. We all tried the Dac Biet, which is one the course meal. It started off with cucumber, Vietnamese Tamales and Papaya Vermicelli Salad. They all came out family style so we all share the plate which is fine. However, the Vermicelli was all stuck together so it was very hard to separate and share. It reminded me of the Soba that was served on planes. Tamales itself was flavorless. You have to put ton of sauce that came with it. We had Honey-Glazed Pork and Black Sea Bass for main course. Sea Bass was pretty good. My Pork was over charred, almost burnt. It was served with seasonal soup which was super salty. The dessert was our favorite. Everyone there were super friendly and nice and professional. However, our server was too friendly that she kept using the "F" word. As soon as we sat down and started the conversation, she shot us with an "F" word as an adjective to describe how much she agreed with whatever we said. Ok. We thought maybe she was trying to make us feel like friends and comfortable talking to her. But almost every time she walks to our table, she would add an "F" word which was kind a vitiating. I've never had anyone speaking like that in a restaurant, not even if we know that person. Anyway, bottomline, if you were looking for authentic Vietnamese food, I would look elsewhere. J: Oh, I think I see people inside. So, if you think you're in the wrong place, you're not alone. I was starting to question whether our friends had actually made a reservation at this venue, or perhaps they'd gotten the name or location confused. Once we walked in the door, everything sorted itself out. We were promptly greeted and seated. The interior's casual, but tasteful. And both food and service wildly exceeded expectations. Hat tip to our server, who was all the things: engaging, knowledgeable, prompt, and directive. I love it when the staff guides me toward an off-menu, exceptional experience of their own initiative. This was likely facilitated by Falansai's menu, which is intended to be shared family style. Regardless, our server went above and beyond to cater to our group of four--one of whom was pescetarian--by curating recommendations with substitutions (e.g., shrimp for meat, green curry for red) that we would've never thought to inquire about. I wouldn't go this far out of my way for fusion Viet cuisine on the regular, but I'd definitely return if invited. Solid 4 stars - came in the summer, recently came back, and will be back again! Had a reservation for 2 people. It wasn't crowded, but I would still recommend a reservation because the location is off the beaten path in a very industrial area and there isn't a lot around. I enjoyed the ambiance - it really feels like you're dining in someone's home, not sure if that's intentional, but it's really nice. Casual and comforting, but slightly trendy. They have an outdoor area too. I don't believe it's covered but there are heaters. Service is great! You are meant to do family style with the food. Ask for sides of their sauces to dip everything in - they are delicious. Ordered the below for two people: -Vermicelli Salad: it was good. It's basically a vermicelli noodle bowl sans meat. Light and fresh, but it didn't stand out like some of the other dishes. -Dads Egg Rolls: I love egg rolls and these are delicious. Nothing crazy, but just really good egg rolls and the pickled veggies that come with it on the side are so good. -Charred Cabbage: I personally did not enjoy this so I wouldn't order again, but I guess I don't love that charred flavor so that was my fault. If you don't love that flavor I wouldn't order. -Dads Fried Rice: I love this dish. I ordered the large size and we ate almost all of it. -Blazed and Glazed: I also love this dish. The meat is really flavorful, love the pickled veggies, and the green sauce - perfection! -Sticky Rice: this wasn't on the menu. It was complimentary from the kitchen which was really nice. It was sticky rice wrapped in a banana leaf with sausage and some other things. It was a savory dish but interestingly tasted a little like fruity pebbles cereal to me. I didn't love, but my fiancé liked it. -Coconut Pudding: I love this dessert. I had it when I came in the summer and I was hoping they still had it on the menu. So light, refreshing, and fresh. This is a whole new era of Falansai, with a completely updated dining room, revamped menu, and a chef from Blue Hill as the owner/chef behind the whole venture. While I remember thoroughly enjoying my meal here years ago, this more recent meal here felt like a much more upscale, farm to table experience. The dining room gave off the vibes you'd get from a fancy friend's home more than it did a restaurant space, which is to say it was the antithesis of sterile. I loved their wine list but opted for a delicious blood orange & pear chrysanthemum kombucha to start. My friend and I shared all the plates, and enjoyed a nice spread of the BBQ Eggplant, Tilefish Tartar, and Grilled Fish. Each dish had layers of flavor built from ingredients like poblano pesto on the grilled fish, fermented tofu on the eggplant, and cashew ice on the tilefish tartar. Familiar flavors and textures mingled with novel ingredients in a way that had us pausing our conversation to appreciate what our taste buds were experiencing. Service was stellar and the pacing of our meal felt just right. The tuna crunch, the nam dua, and the confit duck neck were really good but the double happiness dumplings were overcooked. The soup base for those dumplings and the fisherman's noodle house was pretty much the same (one more flavored with seafood). Unfortunately, because the soup base tasted lamb-y which is not my favorite, those two dishes were a miss. I also didn't get the Mexican fusion part too. It is a tad expensive I'd say and also some of their menu items were different than the menu online so I was disappointed that some of the things I wanted weren't on there. The egg rolls were fantastic, especially with the lettuce and fish sauce. The fish sauce was a tad spicy though with the peppers. I think the bun thit nuong would have been much better in a bowl but it was great, I think too much pork and didn't be necessarily need the egg. The new Falansai maintains its Vietnamese expertise but now has a slight Mexican influence! We did the Dac Biet with a wine pairing and wish I could relive every moment. The food itself covered a lot of ground. We started with an pineapple/oyster and were off and ready to eat. Next came my favorite plate in the tuna tostada with chili ginger hot sauce! The hot sauce balanced the fattiness of the tuna and the tortilla was perfectly crispy but had some chew! This food was so delicious that 6 months later I am still thinking about it once a week. The fusion was great and I am so pleased it was shown to me by a friend. The restaurant is rather small but does not feel claustrophobic. The service was fantastic, we had a very pleasant waiter. Love the modern spin on Vietnamese food! Also a big fan when they continue to add Asian restaurants deeper into Brooklyn. This was my 2nd time here and I came with a group of so this time we were able to order the "Dac Biet" which translates to "The Special" basically the chefs choice for the entire table and it's family style! I have honestly never eaten anything quite like this before. What they do to a simple rice cracker is pretty exquisite. I can't recommend the black cod broth enough. At times, the food felt like a supernatural experience. The seafood especially transported me to the land of mermaids and sea captains. I felt like I was eating the ocean.
