I have been going to Kathy's for a very long time, and I have had several horrendous incidents happen to me (think, a $200 pair of jeans totally tie-dyed with who knows what chemicals or a fancy Victorian-style blouse that just vanished into thin air), but I certainly do not think (like some of these strange, strange reviewers) that a few articles of ruined clothing is worth disrespecting another person (unless, of course, there was some immense sentimental value like a wedding dress).
Anyway, it seems people expect a lone woman (with OCCASIONAL help from her husband) to be able to provide perfect service 100% of the time. Even to a perfectionist like me, that's pretty ridiculous. I weigh my pros and cons with this place, the occasional mishap here and there (which is inevitable with every dry cleaners) in return for some good service and a person who really tries to get things right.
I came in to drop off some articles of clothing for dry cleaning and caught her scalding tirade at her brother (the one who handles the dry cleaning, which is outsourced to his place). She was yelling at him for getting stains on a customer's shirt and refused to accept any of his flimsy excuses about how he didn't notice or couldn't see the stain. I admit, I occasionally get into the yelling argument or two with Kathy, since she's stubborn, I'll give her that. However, it's that same stubborn streak dedicated to doing things right that makes me return here even when things go horribly wrong.
Kathy "went apeshit" on me as a previous reviewer so... quaintly... put it during my demand for a refund for the aforementioned pair of ruined jeans. She got pretty hysterical at some points and I could hardly understand her ranting, but I caught the main gist of it which was that she tried to fix things but her brother's cleaners makes mistakes that she can't really handle and she doesn't know what I could possibly want from her now that the damage is done. I'm no saint, I was pretty angry at the time, but she makes sense in that, demanding that she give up the full payment for the jeans would not restore them to their original state, and making her pay the full $200 price tag... well, who would honestly pay that much for an accident that honestly wasn't their fault? So I told her, okay, I would leave the problem alone this time, but next time she should really try harder. She was very relieved and wholeheartedly thanked me. I now know I can expect much better attention to my clothing from now on since I didn't storm out angrily. Being nice doesn't cost much.
Of course, the Victorian-style blouse incident came along later, but it's easy to see when it's her brother's fault and when it's her fault. For her credit, she spent a very long time looking for it (I also returned daily for about two weeks to check on her progress) but eventually we let it go as a lost cause.
My point is, though I get angry at her and lose a few articles of clothing here and there (actually, I've only suffered 5 incidents of lost/damaged items and only the jeans and the blouse were major), five incidents of problems versus about a hundred different successful incidents... I don't really mind. The benefits of being a valued customer outweigh those replaceable pieces of clothing.
To sum up, a 5 stars overall for great service and outstanding effort. Though I've read the reviews of other cleaners and how wonderfully successful they are, I've become accustomed to driving to Kathy's, coming in, dropping off some clothes, and chatting about those darn lost articles of clothing and how they might have disappeared into someone else's wardrobe. It's a comfortable atmosphere, and one I recommend people take the effort to make themselves a part of. While the seamstress does the work, you have to make the effort to be an understanding person before anything can be communicated properly between the two of you.
So all those reviews about Kathy getting angry, Kathy not providing "super-perfect-ultra-spectacular-rainbow-beautiful" service 24/7? (Can you feel the sarcasm slathered onto that?) Been there, done that, honestly, get over it. Clothing is replaceable, a seamstress who's loyal and great to you? Much more difficult to find. I give this place a 5 with a caution: Customer satisfaction not guaranteed to nitpicky people who seem to have a materialistic reliance, nay, dependency, on every single piece of clothing. If that's you, don't even bother, you'll just end up here with a censored review most likely.
See all those happy people with great results? They're the ones who don't freak over a few problems here and there. See the ones who freak over something like a pair of pants? (That sounds silly no matter which way you swing it.) They end up with some rants and lots of anger and for what? Their clothing is still ruined and they've lost a great seamstress. read more
