I enjoy Middle Eastern food and decided to check out Karam based on raving reviews on Yelp. My expectations were high going in. I was aware that I was going for the food and not for ambiance or service. The place is primarily a takeout spot. It's a tiny old pizza shop with 4 tables and no elbow room. The first thing that jumped out at me was how dirty the place was. It looked like it wasn't cleaned in days and even the tables were covered in trash. I decided to try the food anyway and ordered the mixed grill platter, so I could try different things on the menu. The bread was warm and the chicken was good, but everything else was mediocre at best. Something on that platter didn't agree with my stomach, and it wasn't a pleasant experience to follow. I will not be going back there, and just wanted to share my experience since it's a totally opposite from most Yelp reviews. read more

Karam's been one of my go-tos for the four-something years I've lived in Bay Ridge. I wouldn't say it's the best middle eastern food I've had, but it's just the right level of affordable, delicious, (garlicky), and easy to grab quickly. Also, their sandwiches are huge and the pies are awesome and I like that you can get a mix of various foods for a pretty reasonable price. I moved about a 15 minute walk away and now that I get delivery occasionally, they deliver -insanely- quickly. read more

Ok so this is the best Lebanese food around in Bay Ridge, even in Brooklyn. I love it; actually I crave it at least twice a week. My Favorites are Kichek with Hommous & Garlic Sauce (my own sandwich creation) or the Shish Taouk with Hommous & Garlic Sauce. Everything they have is super awesome... [ This review pertains to the Brooklyn location ] I purchased a $20 Groupon voucher (valued @ $45) and decided to use it this past Sunday (2/26/2012). I drove 45 minutes driving from Queens to Brooklyn to be told 'We are busy right now and cannot accept this Groupon. You have to wait ONE hour for your food.' WTF! WTF! I wish I was kidding with the above quote but this is what the kind gentlemen at the counter told me after I waited in the line and proceeded to order. He then suggested I call in my order next time or I can order and they will call me when it's ready. I don't remember reading this in the fine print! My wife and I arrived around 7PM and yes the place was busy like everywhere else but not insanely packed. Their service was fast; people were moving in and out so there was absolutely NO reason to treat me like a second class citizen. Obviously if you are partnering with Groupon, you should honor the voucher like a regular paying customer. The Groupon offer was apparently a success since more than 600 people purchased the voucher. Hands down one of the best food spots in Bay Ridge and possibly the best middle eastern food in Brooklyn. Sure the place is cramped and tiny with people in and out and pushing past you but it's worth it for the best chicken shawarma sandwich ever. Don't stop there. my first 15 years of my life was in bay ridge, this is one of the best halal places i have ever been to, i've watched the sandwiches go up in price from year to year, but its still a bargain place to go to, the chicken sandwich is amazing, the chicken is not dry, its juicy, plus the salad they put in the sandwich includes pink carrots, onions, great tahini sauce, also good are the falafel platter, fried perfectly, not overfried and a falafel platter which has a salad, 6 falafel balls and plenty of pita for $8, a reasonable deal, there is no parking and parking can be difficult to find since its on 86th street, which has plenty of shops including century, gap, foot locker etc. i've been to this place so many times over many years and i go back again and again for its good food read more

I ordered a chicken shwarma last night around 9pm. They were very busy, which was unbelievable for that time, so I ordered and went to pick it up. When I went to pick it up, they were not friendly and made me wait 5 minutes to give me my already wrapped and bagged food. It was kind of expensive for 4 sandwiches, and they gave a roasted turkey whole and 2 peta breads on the side, when I had asked for a plain chicken sandwich. When i opened my sandwich it was not closed and half of it was basically radish. After I had picked them off, I ate the sandwich as it fell apart and had a lot of liquid in it that was very messy. Stopped by to try this place out because of the reviews and because we've noticed it after visiting Top Thai across the street. Not a sit down place by any means, unless you're in a bind or starving. We ordered a large plate of the mixed shawarma, but think we were only given the meat shawarma, since we didn't see any chicken and were charged accordingly. The large plate comes in a standard rectangular styrofoam container (which were banned!) and three large round pieces of bread (see photo). The bread is thinner than a pita and much larger in diameter, but about as bland as you can get... you're probably expected to use it to wipe up leftover sauce. The plate also comes with a large cup of tahini. The meat was a bit dry and salty, but overall, decent. There was a good layer of meat over the rice. The large plate was $15, but you would get about the same amount of greek food from a midtown lunch truck for just over half the price. We were glad to try the place out, but will probably try other middle eastern eats in the area before we return, if ever. Perhaps if we had ordered sandwiches, we would have been as happy as other reviewers have been. read more

As someone who has spent over a month in Lebanon, I can honestly say this place has the best shawarma sandwich.. The meat is flavored to perfection, chicken and lamb.. Plus they have toom, the thick white garlic sauce which is AWESOME and not served at most middle eastern places bc it is a lebanese sauce.. The falafel, hummus, spinach pie are all great but the shawarma sandwich with fresh french fries is really what you need to order.. Don't try mamouds in the city it won't measure up.. Karam serves what was probably one of the best chicken shawarma/gyro sandwiches I ever tasted. My husband had a lamb kebab sandwich which he thought was also very good. This is a "hole in a wall" type of place, with a few tables and chairs, and it is almost always crowded. Two sandwiches took about 15 minutes but the wait was well worth it. You don't just get a fresh, warm pita full of meat - you get pickled vegetables and the most interesting garlicy spicy sauce (not the watered-down "white sauce" most Middle Eastern carts will offer you - who even knows what's in it?!).
