This place is more a 3.5 but I'll round up since the staff was super nice about explaining every item. This is a grab and go type of little shot. Most of the pastries are priced per pastry whereas the other cooked foods are by weight. It was at $11.99/pound. The stuffed zucchini was supposed to be the star of the show but most of their cooked items were stuffed with the same filling so after having the stuffed grape leaves and stuffed cabbage leaves it didn't wow me like I thought it would. They chicken tahini roll would probably be the only thing I go back for. It was perfectly seasoned and stuffed with meat for the price. First visit here. It's a nice shop. Looks like all the food is made in house. I tried ALL the vegetarian options and the baklava, its not cheap, I got 3 pieces of dolma, small tabouli, 3 small pastries, and 2 big ones with 6 pieces of baklava and 2 cans of fava beans, total cost $32 and change. The lady who helped me wasn't friendly, she didn't seem happy at all. I wish she had heated my order or at least asked maybe then I would've liked all the pastries but nope that didnt happen. I must say the large spinach pie and the dolma was good, the other options I didn't really care for, I'm not even sure what they were? But I must say that this place has the best baklava I've ever tasted! They dont serve any drinks, which is sad because I was pretty parched after, but I'm going back for that baklava! My wife and I have been going to Samia's for over 5 years. I recommend that you try everything that you see. You may have to make a few trips, but it's with it. I especially like the lentils with onions. There are a lot of different foods and pastries to choose from. Most important is that everything is cooked onsite. service is always good, once the owner gets to know you you will start to remember what you ordered before. The most simple ingredients can be the hardest to perfect but Samia's does it insanely well for both vegetarians and non vegetarians. It has an unassuming storefront. I walked in for a late afternoon snack and almost walked out cos the small pantry looked abandoned. Thankfully I went against my judgement. Walked pass the tubs of nuts, candy, and snacks to an assortment of delish, lebanese food made to go. The amount of meatpies staring at you is like from a fairytale. I got the open lamb meat pie (very popular) with caramelized onions and peppers. The mixture of herbs and ground lamb is spread on thick like pate. I wasnt super hungry but with every bite of that pie, I wanted more. The vegetarian stuffed cabbage wasnt bad. It had a good filling of rice seasoned with the sauces of a non-spicy kimchi - very rich with flavors of sauerkraut and tomato. The regular stuffed cabbage was densely pack with ground lamb and rice and very well seasoned. I could've eaten 3 more. The 2 stuffed cabbages came to $3.75 and the pie $4 which is super reasonable for all the love and women power that went into it! Don't be afraid to ask what's in a dish since there are about 20+ dishes to try from (not including the savory baked good). What a disappointment..usually Yelp doesn't let me down! As someone who frequents many Middle Eastern food spots, Samia's really dropped the ball. Selection: Average run-of-the-mill Middle Eastern variety, but priced higher and in smaller portions than nearby places. Some items looked fresh, but others didn't. My baklawa was super mushy and tasted like it had been sitting there a long time. Tabboule was ok and so was the lahem b'ajin but nothing too memorable. I could have walked a couple blocks to 5th Ave and bought the same items of the same quality at a much lower cost. I'm not sure why so many Yelpers are raving, have you guys checked out the places on 5th? Many serve the same fresh foods in bigger portions but for less cost. Service: Neither friendly nor unfriendly, but nobody looked happy to be there. Figured to try this place after reading the reviews on yelp and i must say i was not as impressed. The place has many different food items including nuts, olives, various cheeses, and cooked items. There isnt a menu here you just walk up to the counter and pick what you want, they weight it, and you are on your way. The place could use some tidying up but i did not hold that against them in my rating. I ordered the lentils with some chicken in tomato sauce. The chicken was dry but the lentils were made well. The sauce had some flavor but I expected the flavor to pop a little more. I also tried the stuffed cabbage which weren't bad but I have had better. I also had a meat pie. This was the best thing i tried and i would be back for another. The dough was perfectly cooked and the filling was flavorful. Overall, this was a 3 star experience. The food did not have the quality of the family store down the street but isn't bad. Come check it out. read more

This small Lebanese shop is worth a trip. They have the best spinach pies I've had outside of Fall River (Sam's!). The dough isn't quite as perfect, and they're quite a bit more expensive, but the spinach is perfectly spiced. (And hey, it's worth paying a premium to not have to be in Fall River.) The meat pies were also good, but not as amazingly good. They've also got a great selection of dried fruits and nuts, prepared foods at a deli counter, and other Middle Eastern specialties. This review is about Samia's takeout not the long ago defunct restaurant. Usually the food is good, today it was not. I suspect it was leftover from the weekend and then frozen. Over the years I have marveled at how uncommonly rude and unwelcoming the woman at the counter can be. Today she surpassed herself. She yet again corrected my pronunciation of Middle Eastern food, and she was so impatient with my one question about a food I was considering buying ( mind you nothing is labelled and there is no list or menu) that she held herself against the back counter, arms akimbo and looked angry. I ordered about six items and she seemed to grow more and more annoyed as the order built up. I have absented myself from this business for long periods of time in the past because of her behavior and then gone back. I'm done now. One reviewer commented that she suspects she was treated discourteously because she is Asian, not Middle Eastern. Maybe she has a point. If I could rate this place a zero, I would. I have come here twice and will never go again. You would think they would want you to come back, but I guess not. I thought they were just in a bad mood the first time I came here, but they really need to take classes on how to talk to customers. Samia's has great Zaatar Bread, and the kibbe is good (not as good as Tanoreen, but then, what is?). During December the anise and other cookies smell so good that you are pulled into the store by the nose. Seriously. I've never gone for that cliche before, but that's what happened. The spinach pies are also really yummy, and when they have them, the pumpkin and spinach "kibbe" are fantastic! It makes for a good combo when a vegetarian and a true kibbe eater want to have dinner together. :) There are also dried fruits and nuts and some packaged items. It moved north two blocks or so to this location on 3rd Avenue and 80th Street. Prices are not bad - not super cheap - but very fair. Check it out! read more

I have a lot of memories here. Before it was Samia's, it used to be Rafiq's. Rafiq was the man. He was a neighborhood butcher in the afternoon but more often than not he was holding court & playing tawle with half a dozen of his friends, sipping Arak or Vodka in tiny cups around a coffee table in the back. When I was small my sitti used to buy me Joray Apricot Rolls everytime I'd come in with her..Allah Yar7amo Nowadays Samia's serves up Lebanese Grandma-style food in a deli-style environment. She sells huge plastic containers of Shami Rice in addition to her mazza. That's like my childhood in a bowl right there. A tad bit on the expensive side & its not quite as amazing as tanoreens rice. I only have two issues - first shes Egyptian actually i believe so her spices are rather odd by lebanese standards. She uses cinnamon in places where wed never put it like in her 7ushwi. Second, she also uses walnuts (or sliced almonds?) instead of snobr - pine nuts. Snobr are one of the most important ingredients in 7ushwi - the filling that goes inside kibbe balls and in between layers of baked kibbe. Real 7ushwi has onions, lamb, snobr and spices. This is just lamb and cinnamon (no allspice) and weird budget nuts.... read more

Please note: This is for the new Samia's restaurant. As fans of Samia's delifront and a Lebanese family, we were looking forward to coming here for our elderly relatives' birthday celebrations. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment overall. (I get that the restaurant is brand new, so hopefully they we will take note and make some improvements because I'd like to see another Syrian restaurant succeed in the neighborhood.) I can say the food was pretty good, though a bit hit-and-miss. We were a party of 8, so we had a lot of the selections on the menu. We ordered the kibbeh balls, meat and spinach pies, the dip sample (hummus, babaghonoush, and lebneh), baked kibbeh, kofta, and lamb kebobs. The dips, pies, baked kibbeh, and parts of the meats that were hot were great. However, the middles of the kibbeh balls were still cold as they were obviously frozen and then heated up. For the lamb kebobs, half the chunks were overcooked and half were undercooked. Also, the menu needs to be expanded because there were only a handful of entrees, or they should at least offer options to make the appetizers platters/entrees. As for the service, it too was okay. The waiter was very attentive. However, now I'm not saying he has to be Middle Eastern, but he should have at least been familiar with the food (pronunciation and ingredients) on the menu. We had to point out our selections because he didn't understand what we were saying. Also, even though there was no one else in the restaurant (it was 4 on a Saturday afternoon, so an early dinner) and we had a reservation, they sat us right next to the coat rack and the telephone. When the phone rang, my cousin was so close to it, she offered to answer it! Lastly, FYI, for the beverages, they do not have their liquor license yet (which would have been nice to know beforehand, like when we made the reservation), and they served the soda without ice (we had to ask). If they are going to follow the great Sally & George's that previously occupied the space, then they are going to have to get their act together. A friendly little shop worth traveling a ways for. Yes, I came all the way from Manhattan and was happy. Fewer options than Sahadi's and Damascus Bakery but tasty enough that this doesn't matter. Samia's offers salads, cheeses, variety of cookies, spinach, chicken, eggplant pies in filo and soft home-made pastry, za'atar bread, cheese covered bread, etc. The eggplant has less tomato umami flavor than Sahadi's but is deliciously eggplanty. Things aren't labeled but they were friendly and helpful so I didn't accidentally buy something with meat. The warm pies and breads are good for eating on the run and everything is worth taking home. There's a wide variety of different Mediterranean pies, rolls, and other thing I don't know the name of. But it's all good. Happen to walk by today and stopped in. There was so much I wanted because it all looked so good! I settled on a stuffed cabbage roll, a spinach/feta filo roll, a potato covered fried spinach pie, some eggplant salad and a piece of baklava and it was all absolutely delicious! Everything was perfectly seasoned. Some of the reviews here compare the spicing of the food to what they think Lebanese food should taste like. I'm not a middle eastern food scholar and don't know what differences there might be between Lebanese and Egyptian food (the owners are Egyptian btw), but everything was well balanced and flavorful. Out of this world great tasting food and easy on the wallet and great for any diet. Told the wife no offense but take time off from cooking and let Samia's do it for you. Glad it is only a few blocks from home, but I would gladly drive to pick up or eat in 7 days a week. Now we love, love, love the restaurant. Cold and hot appetizers were exactly that ....could not get enough, but had to because of the feast that came afterwards. Grilled chicken dish was exactly what the doctor ordered brought to us by neighborhood waiters and waitresses who were only too welcoming and attentive to bring our courses, fill our glasses and be as familiar with what we were looking for without our even looking at the full menu of traditional dishes that we found. We trusted their choices for us and we were not disappointed. It is like saying, "Bring us the usual," after a long day of work. Everything came out when it should have probably because the waiters and waitresses were standing close by. The soups were to die for and could have been a full meal with the just-right seasoning of the salads, and we were there knowing that we would have to take dinner home after salad, but not before the mouth-watering hot and cold desserts because of the food portions being so full. We were told of the pending liquor-license, but that did not dissuade us one bit. We wanted to taste everything we ordered with a clear head and a loving heart for all the years that Samia's Bakery has served us unconditionally during every family event at the expense of its owners and staff. You don't need any luck wished you for S U C C E S S; all we can say is thank you for finally opening an "eat in" opportunity for all of us to visit seven days a week, that will not break the wallet while serving the dishes that have brought sooooooo much flavor to our lives since you came to Bay Ridge.
