Loved the chicken shawarma from here served with their very special garlic sauce. However, my last experience here was a downright dirty shame. I ordered 2 of their specialty, and as I look over behind the counter at the guy preparing my order, he proceeds to handle my food with his bare bloody scabbed up sausage fingers. Literally his hands had lacerations all over them. Perhaps from cutting himself in the kitchen. Understandable, but wear some damn gloves, man! So I tell the guy collecting the money in a quiet subtle tone that I don't want the food due to what I witnessed. He in turn screams over the counter, "Who says he has to wear gloves". I was just appalled and walked out. I tell my husband the story as I walk out to the car empty handed being met by a face soured with disappointment. This review is for Karam's catering services, which we used for a 100-person wedding reception. I will begin by saying that the food was phenomenal, and all of our guests raved about it! We ordered hummos, pita, baba gahnoush, zatar, meat pies, grape leaves, chicken shish kabobs, lamb over rice, falafel, fatoush salad, and baklava. The food was delivered, and it arrived exactly on time. There was PLENTY of food for all of our guests, and many of them went to the buffet for seconds and thirds. People raved in particular about the falafel and the lamb/ rice dish. Everything was perfectly seasoned, and was beautifully plated and garnished. The owner even included a platter of pickles and olives in addition to the food we ordered. As far as weddings go, it can often be a challenge to find equally good options for the vegetarians and meat-eating guests, and ordering from Karam solved this problem and kept everyone happy. And best of all, the price was extremely reasonable. I cannot speak more highly of Karam's dependability and professionalism in handling our business, I would recommend them to anyone and will absolutely call them again the next time I need to feed a crowd. The shawerma is the best I had in NYC. It might be a bit out of the way for people, but its definitely worth the trek. Not recommended for three reasons. In decreasing order of importance: 1) the food is not good. I got a stuffed pepper that tasted like it had been sitting out in a puddle for three days. I also got a baba ghanoush sandwich, which barely had any baba ghanoush on it. 2) They're dishonest about their prices. Nothing posted on the menu is accurate. Thinking my order would cost $8, I was charged $10. When I asked about the discrepancy, I was told it was because of tax. I said last time I checked, tax was not 25%. I was offered a receipt. Sure enough, the prices were higher not only than they appeared on the menu but also higher than what the guy at the counter had just told me. Look, I get that you need to make money and pay rent or whatever. My issue is not the price, it's the lack of transparency and leaving a place feeling like they're trying to squeeze and extra buck out of you rather than just being straightforward about what stuff costs. Terrible business practice. 3) The people behind the counter are outright rude. I know this isn't exactly rare in NYC, but this place takes it to another level. Not recommended. First time coming here. The staff was pretty rude. Their to-go boxes were stacked high so I couldn't see the menu, had to look at the tinier one they have near the counter which meant stepping slightly away from the man taking my order. When I glanced over at him to start talking I saw him rolling his eyes and making faces at me...so I said hey sorry I've never been here before. He of course acted like nothing was wrong then the other worker stepped in and took my order and right in the middle of my order (I only ordered a sandwich and had my wallet out ready to pay) he took another customer and starts ringing them up. Then looks at me like what else? I said that was it and paid. They told me it would be about 10 minutes which was fine but it came out much sooner...I knew I should've checked before leaving. All my friends eat at this place. I gave it a try last week and it was terrible. I had chicken gyro with nothing inside and a side order of humus. It wasn't good. I regret spending my money here. My friends ordered the lamb and they didn't complain. I gave it another try today. (I eat chicken gyro all the time from many different restaurants including the best Anatolian gyyo, sahara, etc) I got the same order again today it was even worse. The chicken taste old and there was hardly any flavor in it. The humus was thick and chunky. I hope i don't get sick.. I spent $13 and ate hardly any of it. I don't know where to start. When you look at this place you see old, stale, dingy, needs a facelift pizzeria looking place. If you didn't know any better you could pass right by and never know that it is in my opinion "ONE OF THE BEST" Shawarima joints in the city. I defiantly think that if they were to open up next to Mamoun's in the village they would close them down in a month. My favorite Shawirrma is the chicken, the lamb is a bit dry for me sometimes but if you were to compare it to the fatty sandwich that Mamouns serves, I would eat it 24/7/365. I can't even begin to compliment there Garlic sauce you just can't get enough, people will know your coming from blocks away. I get my sandwiches with both tahini and garlic sauce. You know just writing about the sandwich is making me hungry! They have a nice selection of oven baked Middle Eastern breads. One with meat and tomatoes, one with cheese, one with Zartar(ground oregano with sesame seeds and spices, a middle eastern staple), grab one or two of those bad boys and a hot cup of tea in the morning and your good to go! I mean I could go through the whole menu but what for they have a nice selection of Middle Eastern Fast Foods and even a few home cooking type stuff. You absolutely can't go wrong. Went there last night 9/22/11 around 7 p.m.. The service was quick and friendly. I ordered the Mixed Chicken and Beef Shwarma Combo with Rice, Babaghanouj, and Moujadara. This also came with 2 extra pita breads and a very delicious Galic Sauce. Got it to go and after a 15 minute train ride it was still hot and juicy delishious. I am just about half through my first order from this place and I love it. I ordered falafel plate with moujadara and house salad. I have gluten sensitivity and the restaurant accommodated me and made a fresh batch of falafel without flour and they are one of the best I ate in a long time. Also their moujadara is great even though I would put more rice and less lentils but still yummy. The house salad though! I love the combo of pickled veggies with fresh ones and hot peperoncini. I also got a small side of tahini for the falafel. For people with no gluten issue it comes with 2 pitas - they are looking like house made and tasty but I did not eat it so just a visual observation. The presentation, taste and the willingness to help of this restaurant was so good I will visit in person for sure. The only downsize- I ordered through grubhub and they charge 5 dollars on top for delivery but still deserve 5 starts and it was worth every penny. read more
