Fun to see them take over the old Islands with a cool presentation and lots of dish variety. Everything is plated well, and with the bar right in the middle of the dining floor everything feels rather lively. The place is loud, but in a good way. The wet burrito was ok, if I came back I would look to try some of their other options like colorful taquitos or quesobarria. Apple chimichanga desert was fire. read more

This is located at the older Island's location in Simi Valley. I'm finally glad to see this restuarant space get used. The inside has a vibrant vibe w colorful artwork and a open ceiling concept. Luckily we made reservations for our party of 5. It definitely best to make reservations. The bar is I believe first come first serve. Once seated we were greeted and offered chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and hot, the salsa was spicy. Honestly the best salsa I've had at a mexican restaurant. My sister and I decided on the margarita sampler (around $30). My favorite was the pepino (cucumber) margarita. My favorite drink was the Horchata Colada, absolutely delicious! Sweet and strong. I ordered the tacos which were a little disappointing. The tortilla wasn't cooked all the way. The carne asada (4/10) didn't have much flavor, it got soggy and honestly they put 3 pieces of meet which I thought was a joke. The chicharron (4/10) was soggy as well. It wasn't crispy like it is supposed to be. The shrimp (7/10) was tasty it was soggy as well but due to the sauce. The mushroom (9/10) was surprisingly delicious. It had great flavor and was paired well w its toppings. My bf enjoyed his enchilada, I did try the beans and rice which were really good. My sister had ceviche which was bland and had no flavor. My uncle had the pasta which he really liked. Service was good from the food runners to the hostesses and waiters. The food did come out in a weird order and obviously some of it was a miss. The tacos were disappointing and not cooked well. All in all the vibe is fun and vibrant. The food was a hit or miss. I would like to try other options. read more

BEST EXPERIENCE IN SIMI!! If you're looking for a place with great music, drinks, & hype to go out with your friends or fam bam - this is the spot! It is NOT for people who like calm, quiet, more reserved dining - hence the bad reviews. This is definitely the spot for a young, loud & lively vibe to have a really fun time and an appreciation for latino cultural influences....and especially for a birthday shot! Simi needed a spot like this! Servers & Hostesses were AMAZING, FRIENDLY, & PROMPT despite the amount of people! Drinks were also spectacular! We tried a wide range of them and really favored the Tamalindo and Guayabera (sweet). - Props to the entire team for building the high energy atmosphere, a well-curated interior, a smooth guest experience, talented mixologists/bartenders, and everyone behind the scenes we may not have met but took notice! Cheers! TIP: If you're coming on a busy night, call an hour ahead or visit the restaurant and put your name in while you wait. The wait can be awhile due to high demand so be prepared!:) Prices are higher than usual for the Simi area so if you're looking to save, this place isn't ideal. read more

Food and drinks were amazing. My bartender, Josue, recommended the Cadillac margarita and the mole enchiladas. Soooo freakin good

Upon arrival we did not receive a warm friendly greeting. When we requested a different table, one of the hostesses was openly rude. She practically threw our menus on the new table & walked away. We were shocked. Our first & second servers(apparently there was a section mixup) were both friendly. One member of our party asked for the Kalaveras margarita without the Agave syrup and we were told the Margaritas were premixed. BAD. All the Margaritas we tried were too sweet and you shouldn't have to buy an extra shot of tequila to remedy. The food was mediocre at best. The two stars are for the atmosphere, which is lively and fun. We were so excited to try and left SO disappointed. read more

What an amazing experience last night. Superb service and even the manager made us feel so welcomed! Thanks for the salsa picante! It was my sisters birthday celebration and some San Fernando Valley girls went out to Simi to try Kalaveras, just over the hill... ambience is great! Food was ok! But drinks were spectacular! I love the cucumber with Chile drink! Hands down the best drink in the house! Good times! Thanks for a good time! read more

Sunday brunch is amazing. A lot of variety and food always hot , full in trays and staff extremely helpful and polite.

I am with everyone else it's wayyyy to loud. Great service and good food. But way to loud lower music a little read more

Went in for the first time and had an amazing experience! My friend and I sat at the bar and ordered some tacos and the cocktail, "El Chupacabras" which is a hibiscus margarita. The tacos were great and the drink was even better! Also got to try one of their mezcal cocktails and it was so good. I'm typically not a fan of mezcal but this one changed my mind! It had passion fruit and mango in it, which complemented the mezcal perfectly. As for the service, the bartenders did a great job at taking care of us. We also met Edgar and he was awesome! He went above and beyond in providing us with exceptional service. So happy to have Kalaveras close to me and can't wait to go back. It's a great place to check out if you're looking for some good food, drinks and music! read more

Came in on a rainy Taco Tuesday and wasn't expecting too many people. I was wrong, it was very busy! However, the hostess was polite, made contact, and kept us informed. We were seated fairly quickly and had a great server. She answered questions and took our order. Drinks, and chips and salsa came out quickly and the horchata colada slushy was strong. We ordered the barbacoa, asada, chicharron, and carnitas tacos with a side of rice and beans. The barbacoa was my favorite and the chicharron was my son's favorite. Tacos were very small, but it was a good size for the rice and beans. We also ordered the churro sandwich. The ice cream was very good and it was a mix of chocolate and raspberry sauce. However, I wasn't fond of the churro-it did look pretty. We were thanked exiting, by the hostess. We look forward to our next visit. read more

We went in on a Wednesday for the seafood feast. It was still advertised on the table. They said "no longer available". So just ordered from regular menu (not very good). So again, we wanted the drink special that was also advertised on table. And again, "not available". We asked to speak with manager and we saw him walk over but not to speak with us or to apologize.....it was to fold card over with specials on it. Why advertise and not honor?! Rude and Unprofessional!! read more

I know this place has been around for a bit, but my family went for the first time tonight. Their $1.49 Taco Tuesday is the only thing I can rate menu wise, but they were spectacular and wow what a deal! We got a bunch of all of them and will make this a normal Tuesday night thing. How we didn't have to wait blows my mind. Can't wait to try the rest of what they have on the menu! read more

The ambiance was fun and energetic! They were accommodating to our large group and the food was pretty good!

Genuinely in my top 5 worst tacos i've ever had. You'd think for their prices it'd actually be good tasting, I'm not even starting with authenticity. Super dry and lacking something. Really disappointed. Service is good at least and ambiance is whatever. read more

This is a bar not a restaurant. No ambience for eating. It's about party time. Barbacoa and carnitas were quite good. Chile relleno and cheese enchiladas were subpar. Just be aware of the loud music and vibe here. Not a casual dining experience. read more

A place like this was NEEDED in Simi. Great service! I was surprised how flavorful the food was. From the salsa and chips, to the entrees. Everything tasted great. They make the drinks strong. People In previous reviews complained about the music being too loud, that's what kind of place this is. It's high energy. Waiters walk around with a skull engulfed in fireworks and Shots for birthday celebrations. Looks like a younger-ish crowd. Might not be a cup of tea for some. Just know what type of place it is before going. Food and Drink Review: *Two tacos asada, 1 chicharon 4.5/5~ unique, flavorful, Each taco packed with meat *Shrimp Enchiladas 4/5~ preferred without mango salsa but tasty. Shrimp were big and cooked well. *Tamarindo Margarita 4/5 ~ generous amounts of tequila, just wish it had more Tamarindo flavor * Johnny Walker on the rocks 4.8/5~ can't go wrong with JW read more

If I could give Oscar 100 stars, I would. I don't even know where to begin because Oscar is THAT exceptional. From the moment I walked in, he greeted me with a level of warmth and professionalism that instantly put me at ease. It's rare to come across someone who not only loves what they do but also goes above and beyond to make sure every single detail is perfect but that's exactly who Oscar is. He's not just good at his job, he's phenomenal. He's a rare gem who genuinely cares about people and takes immense pride in the service he provides. Whether it's handling a stressful situation with calm confidence, offering knowledgeable advice, or just bringing good vibes wherever he goes, Oscar turns an average experience into something truly unforgettable. You can tell that he gives 110% every single time. I honestly left feeling like I had just met a real-life superhero in customer service form. The world needs more Oscars, and whatever company has him, they better know how lucky they are. Seriously, ask for Oscar. You'll leave smiling, feeling seen, heard, and taken care of. He's a legend. read more

We came for Saturday brunch. The server was very nice and came by several times through our meal. Nice table touch by the Manager as well. We got the Margarita flight, the brunch burrito, the Pozole soup, and a barbacoa taco. All of the food was well made and flavorful. The portions were definitely the right size for the price and the presentation was very nice. The tortilla on the burrito was almost like a quesadilla. That was the star of the show me while my wife loved the crunchy tortilla side that came with her soup; she also loved her taco. Why this was a 4 instead of a 5 star review for us came down to the menu. When food is at the core of the business, we want to know what we're getting ahead of time. The burrito didn't mention there was onion which ended up being large chunks and at least 15% of the total ingredients. The Pozole soup was a green broth rather than red, and it didn't mention the protein (chicken). A super minor thing, but also there was no compulsory water brought out to start us off. All in all a very solid option and if I could give a 4.5 instead of a 4, I would. read more

REDUCE THE NOICE! It is too loud to be a restaurant, feels more like a club. Drinks are overpriced and ambiance is "trying to hard" to be cool. Besides their great brunch options, I would not recommend anyone coming here. read more

Our first experience here was really good, the older lady was our waitress and she was amazing, checked in on us, took our order in a timely and professional manner, asked if we want water, etc etc. second visit, the younger lady was nice but we had to wait sooooooooo long to see her, she checked in on us every 30 minutes. Bad service. Probably won't come back. Music is cool but gives you a headache after hearing the same reggaeton beat over and over. Ambiance is chill, I just recommend they give better customer service. The girls are too busy trying to walk to the beat of the reggaeton and look cute; not what I wanna deal with when I want some tacos. read more

The waiters seem like car salesmen, smh. Buffet was $40. I ordered a Bloody Mary at $15 the waiter asked if I wanted to make it a double. I said sure, I ordered a second. Those two drinks were $60 bucks lol. The buffet comes with drinks, Sodas etc. one of my twins of 17 years old orders a coke. The waiter asked her if she wanted to make it a Mexican coke. Of course she says yes, He said it's not included with the buffets, so it's going to be extra. I get the sales tactics. I'm just trying to eat though. I'll spend enough on my own without any help. I just noticed a few of these incidents. It's going to be a long while until I return. Thank you... read more

Horrible service!! Our waitress disappeared, never brought us more drinks or checked on us. Quality has gone downhill on both food and drinks. Unfortunately, this is the only place that's open late, sit at the bar for better service unless it's Saturday and they "smartly" close the bar to set up for Sunday brunch LOL! We went on a Friday evening in June (at around 7:00 pm). The food was great and the drinks were really good. Had some seafood tacos and some shrimp enchiladas, and one of the guava-based margaritas/hard alcohol beverages. The food was spot-on. No complaints there. This place gets down-graded to three stars because the music was way too loud. We sat outside (inside was packed, which is great for the restaurant). About 10 minutes after they took our dinner order, their regaton music got cranked WAY up (even the group of four-middle-aged dudes next to us were joking with one of their employees, 'You've gotta be kidding me with this music, is this a restaurant or is it a nightclub??'). The employee was offended by the remark. Sadly, we probably won't go back unless they play their music at a much more reasonable volume. If you read these reviews, you will notice that we aren't the only individuals who have critiques about their far-too-loud music. read more

If you want a pounding headache have dinner here. If you want to not be able to converse with your friends during your meal have dinner here. The pounding music didn't stop. Not only that, but as the evening went on the volume got even louder! Maybe in the South Bay this type of loud pounding music is acceptable but in Simi Valley it's a completely different audience and they should dial it down based on their clientele. On top of this the food was mediocre at best. Needless to say we would never come back and patronize this establishment! read more

I ordered their ceviche as part of a delivery order. Shrimp is cooked in the acidity of the lemon. Takes a while but it's how the process goes. Why is this GREY, the shrimp is raw. Do you want the experience of going to the loudest nightclub you've ever been to but also at like 9 AM?! Well, look no further than Kalaveras! Girl, this place is LOUD. It made me feel like someone's mean 89 year old aunt because I was basically having a scream conversation with my friends while getting progressively more upset. Volume level aside this place was really lovely for a Sunday brunch place as long as your hearing isn't too great. They have a huge array of food choices ranging from cereal, to sweetbread to an amazing choice of meats and sides that all feel delicious and familiar. There is no one food that really blew me out of the park here but that being said it was a really good value for the price and if you come really hungry, you can try a lot of different stuff. You end up getting complementary mimosas when you enter and it's a really nice touch. The service is great and the vibes of this restaurant are really lovely.
