Just discovered that I messed up. This review for El Patio Cantina I somehow posted under El Patio Restaurant on 12/21/22. I'm posting it in the correct place instead, and will delete the original from the other, larger location. -5/15/23 We've been here quite a few times; am surprised that I haven't written a review before. While I'll admit that the interior is dated, I can enthusiastically give them five stars almost exclusively for their Shrimp Fajitas. They are always outstanding each time we order them. One order is plenty for Dear Hubby and I to share, and we both end up with satisfied tastebuds and full bellies. The shrimp is served perfectly cooked, plump, juicy, and tender - really a standout dish. They do offer complimentary chips & salsa, which are okay. They usually hit the spot while waiting for drinks to arrive. The bartenders always do a great job with virgin margaritas - my beverage of choice here. When the weather is warm, we prefer to sit outside on their patio, versus inside. Either way, we've received friendly and efficient service. Their East Simi location, south of L.A. Avenue is a sleeper location, but we recommend going and finding them, especially if you like shrimp fajitas like we do. Cheers! read more

I took my trained service dog to El Patio, only to be publicly turned away by a rude, chubby guy with a buzz cut who clearly has no idea how the law--or basic decency--works. He demanded "documentation" for my service animal, which is 100% illegal under the ADA. Federal law prohibits businesses from asking for paperwork, yet this guy argued like he owned the place (while somehow managing to drive customers away with his stunning lack of charisma). When I calmly explained the law, he doubled down on his ignorance. No apology, no accountability--just hostility. I reached out to management for a resolution, but crickets. No call back, no attempt to educate their staff. As someone in the legal field, they're lucky I didn't file a formal complaint (yet). Turning away service dogs isn't just scummy--it's a violation of civil rights. If this is how they treat disabled patrons, avoid this place. Ooh this place is amazing, and this is coming from someone who doesn't prefer cantina-style "Mexican" (I appreciate regional, authentic cuisine such as from Sonora or Guadalajara). Anyway, I really enjoyed the food: the salsa was cilantro-forward and spicy; chips were standard. I ordered the Colorado burrito, which had chunks of lean, tender beef and refried beans. They do burritos as good as in LA (Burnt Tortilla, anyone?). Aside from the burrito options, this place has a huge margarita menu... I tried a Cadillac Margarita, and it was super but too strong for me. I wish they had a fresh strawberry or any blended one, as I didn't see that type of option on the menu. This restaurant has two dining rooms and a bar area with seating, making it a great place for parties of any size. It was a beautiful sunny day yesterday so ig friend and I wanted to find a nice patio to dine at. Well, when it's right in the name you know you can't go wrong!! I got a chimichanga and my friend got the chicken quesadilla- we both enjoyed our food and the decent size portions! We also each got one of the specialty Margaritas that had an orange liquer and a regular one, and both were delicious. I've been here several times and have brought friends in my more recent visits. Well worth the trip to Simi Valley from the west county. Their food is delicious and their Cadillac Margaritas will not disappoint. All three in my party loved this place when we stopped there on our way home from the San Bernardino Mountains a few weeks ago (118 / 210 when visiting the Inland Empire from Ventura County). Bad service We went in and we had to ask to have the fans and the music turned on the waiters never came to check on us unless we called on them. We felt like we were a nuisance just by being there. I like trying new places when possible. It doesn't always serve me but most times it does. I liked El Patio Cantina. It's a nice little Mexican restaurant tucked away in Simi Valley. They have a very nice patio for drinking margaritas in the sunshine. None for me today. My liver is on hiatus until the Summer, but I'll be back. I ordered some bean dip, which was fine. I thought some would come with the chips and salsa but no. Chips were fine, the salsa would be considered medium to slightly spicy. Crispy Chicken Taco, Beef Enchilada with Rice and Beans for lunch today. All good down to the rice and beans. The beef enchilada was the stand out with perfect tender beef and green bell pepper. Lots of cheese and enchilada sauce. Bueno. The wife ordered Chicken Fajitas then changed her mind and got the Chile Verde lunch special on the St. Patrick's Day menu. Ordered the combination plate with chicken taco, cheese enchilada and Chile relleno. The chicken taco was pretty good but the cheese in the enchilada tasted like it had been in the freezer. I really wanted to like this place but it's a pass for me... it's too expensive to taste like it was reheated from a freezer. I happen to be there to ask to sing with the group with the Blue Notes...Leader, the Sax Player, Roman. It has been so long ago (1997) and I was still young then. I was a Jr at NMSU a returning student. I was 44 --had been singing back home in the Philippines--Ballads and some Jazz, so I knew what Roman wanted to hear. Cool little place with a great old school vibe. I felt like the food was going to be legit and when the plate landed on the table my original thoughts were confirmed. Unfortunately it wasn't as good as it looked. The enchilada was cold and cheese not melted. Taco and tamale were just ok. We came at an off hour (the lull between lunch and din I think if we were here when they were in the swing of it, it could be a lot better. I'm moving these guys up to 4 stars for their lunch buffet. I am few days removed from eating here. This place is authentic. From the chips and salsa, served with refried beans (bomb), to the main platters everything was delicious.
