Second time here and Maria's just keeps getting better. What I really like about this place is how consistent it is. The food tastes fresh, homemade, and not overly greasy like a lot of Mexican spots can be. You can tell they actually care about what they're serving. The portions are generous without being over the top, and everything comes out hot and well prepared. I've tried a couple different things now and nothing has disappointed. The flavors are spot on and feel authentic. The staff has been helpful and patient both times, which makes a big difference, especially when you're deciding what to order. We went looking for a New Mexican restaurant and found Maria's. The food was really good, the amount of tomatoes to add to the Fajitas was very small and not enough to make 3 flour Fajitas. The portion size of the fajitas themselves was very large and well prepared. Service was okay. There were not many customers and they were very friendly but not really attentive with us, as they seemed very busy chatting with another couple. Seating was comfortable and they have booths, chairs and an outside patio. My Fajitas did not come with cheese and they charged an additional $1.50 which I think is fair, but cheese should come with the dish. We enjoyed the food and will come back. read more

I been here twice, and now, I do remember why I don't come here. Overall the drinks are the only good things. The menu hasn't improved. I order the huevos rancheros, but the entire plate was full of green sauce and beans. I probably just come back for the drinks. The service was ok. The Ambiance was also ok. Marias has been our Sunday morning breakfast go to for many years. Unfortunately, the last few months we have seen changes that are not good. Last week when we received our bill the tip was automatically added in. We asked why and they said if the bill is over $100 they add it in. We had them take it off so we could choose our own tip. Today, we ordered a "Make your own omelet". We asked for only 2 items, bacon and ham and was told you cant get 2 meats. Then why give you the options of toppings? Lastly, the service has definitely declined. Unfortunately, it may be time to find a new Sunday morning breakfast spot. read more

María's Restaurant is in a ubiquitous, Simi Valley, huge stripmall which is related to Bella's Bistro, formerly Beto's Bistro & Wine Bar only a few doors away. Also related to the great granddaddy, Beto's Italian Bistro on Kuehner a few miles away. So Maria's is an outlier serving Mexican. I came for the express purpose of ordering an unusual al Pastor dish not in the form of a taco. 1) The Totopos/chips and Salsa are great. The salsa seems to be part stewed tomatoes and tomato sauce, red chile sauce, garlic with finely diced fresh cilantro, tomato, onions. This Salsa seems rested so the flavours all meld together as well as undergoing a touch of pleasing fermentation. 2) Chuleta de Puerco al Pastor/al Pastor Pork Chop: Thick bone in pork meat that is meaty, a touch overcooked so a bit too firm and dry. Perhaps brining in garlic, black pepper, Mexican oregano would add an interesting twist to upping flavours to an otherwise bland piece of pork. The interesting part comes from slathering the pork with al Pastor Adobo sauce made with earthy spices such as red Achiote, cumin, oregano. Also warm spices like cloves, cinnamon. Addition of various chiles to infuse piquancy, smokiness, subtle fruitiness. Vinegar for a bright, acidic gastrique to amp the flavours above. Unfortunately, Maria's version lacked the punch and richness of the ingredients described above. The al Pastor Adobo flavours were a bit too meek and shy when it should be bold and decisive to contrast with the milder pork. Maybe, Maria's doesn't think suburban Simi Valley can handle the warm spice intensity. With all that I have said, the Pork Chop al Pastor is still good. The pork chop quality seems close to their signature Costoletta di Maiale at their flagship Beto's Italian Bistro. Garnishes of sprigs of cilantro, scattering of diced Pico de Gallo consisting of onions, cilantro, tomato, mild green chiles. The diced, grilled pineapple on top of the grilled pork chop refers to the traditional Trompo which is a rotating vertical spit used to cook the pork with pineapple on top leaking sweet juices to tenderize the meat below. Chunks of roasted Parmesan Potatoes skin on brushed with oil, very lightly salted. Couldn't sense any cheesy parmesan flavor. Good starch nonetheless. Mélange of grilled, blackened vegetables like red bells, broccoli, zucchini. To enliven the overall flavours, I asked for powdered Pico de Gallo chile spice mix, but it wasn't available. They did have El Tajín another red chile mix with citrus that added some oomph. Just want to say that María's has great fresh, raw, chopped Pico de Gallo. It seems to be left in the fridge a day or two to mildly ferment to increase Umami and add a pleasant acidic, nuanced funkiness. Service is accommodating and goes out of the way to fulfill customer requests in a quiet, diffident manner. Next time I will have to ask that more al Pastor Adobo sauce be slathered on the pork chop. 4- stars read more

We haven't been here since 2018. Long overdue to try again. I got the Maria's Fajitas (chicken, steak & shrimp). My wife got the Chilli Relleno Omelette. We both enjoyed our meals. Both plates were large and generous. The waitresses are still very nice and considerate. All in all, a great meal. Also, the live wild flowers on each table are a nice touch! read more

What's with all the televisions? Went in for dinner the other night to find 5 huge televisions installed on the walls. It's sort of difficult to enjoy a nice dinner with 5 big screens flashing in your face and at the same time there's very loud music blaring out of the speakers overhead. We rushed thru our meal to get out. We love Maria's and have been coming for quite some time now. Their food is always very good, the service is great and they make delicious margaritas but the new vibe will prevent us from returning. read more

I got the green chilaquiles the salsa was good but would of preferred it as a salsa and not all over my chilaquiles I'm just use to the red sauce but everything was delicious the hash browns and the horchata was great in sugar and creamy I loved it! Brunch with some friends in Simi Valley. It's located in a strip mall so I wasn't quite sure what to expect however, once inside the decor and retro tiled floors make the restaurant feel warm and homey. Staff were welcoming and very attentive. They offered us drinks right away. I was happily surprised they had my favorite brand of Stash bagged tea. My friends who ordered chili rellanos really enjoyed their entrees. My friends also enjoyed their mango margarita and Paloma beverages. I ordered pancakes and they were fine. Strawberries were sweet and fresh. I probably will try another dish next time considering this was a Mexican restaurant but I happen to be craving pancakes this particular day. Maria's Restaurant resides in a strip mall in Simi Valley. The eatery has Mexican and Western fare and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The inside is well decorated and there is a welcome vibe. Servers are very friendly and patrons are having a good time. There is fun and satisfaction in the air. It was a little before noon and they asked if I would like the breakfast or lunch menus. I said both and ordered the Huevos Rancheros with eggs over medium. Before that were chips and salsa (pico de gallo). I bravely asked for a salsa picante. One dip of that and I was on fire. It's the real thing with habanero peppers. The Huevos Rancheros was prepared well but the eggs were buried with an overdose of Mexican cheese crumbles and fresh salsa verde and avocado slices on the top. I chose to have house potatoes (instead of hash browns) for the side with corn tortillas (which were chewy and hence lacked freshness). Really missed the rice and beans with this dish. read more

Beautiful little restaurant. I had the remoladas, I believe was the name: like enchiladas but with mole on top served with a side of rice. It was so delicious. The rice was also perfectly cooked; not alot of people respect the rice sometimes Staff was super friendly and while there weren't many there, the atmosphere was still warm and inviting. Finding a table for 12 at popular breakfast spots isn't easy, so we decided to look for an alternative, and that's how we found Maria's. What a pleasant surprise! If you're looking for a breakfast that feels like someone is cooking you an exceptional meal in their own home, all in a quaint and welcoming environment, I highly recommend Maria's. I ordered the tamale and egg breakfast with flour tortillas, while another in our group chose a traditional French toast breakfast. The ability to choose between Mexican or American-style breakfasts, both with generous portions and excellent quality was truly impressive. Great food and love the music The service was a bit slow but they appeared busy. We tried a few things and loved then. I had the nopales (cactus) and eggs scramble. I added the ghost pepper sauce and it was delish. My wife had the huevos rancheros and she enjoyed them. We moved from the area some years ago and are back home for a visit. Some friends suggested we meet at Maria's. What a great surprise! Maria and crew have turned this ordinary little strip mall spot into a lovely place. The interior is interesting and festive and they have managed to turn their small strip of ordinary outdoor sidewalk into a sweet little retreat, with simple but very effective picket fencing. We decided to sit outside. Two of us ordered Mexican breakfast and two of us had American breakfast. All menu items were prepared well and service was great. We were here mid-morning on a weekday. While there were numerous patrons coming and going, not so many that we felt guilty for holding down our table for way too long. It didn't hurt that the SoCal early June weather was just about perfect. When we finally left, we had a sense of having been on vacation. It was a pretty idyllic experience--especially for a place in a strip mall. Thanks, Maria and staff! We'll be back when we're back in town. read more
