My not so picky 12 year old, sort of like the pulled pork. My husband liked the salmon. I loved the banana bread French toast with pecans, blackberries, bananas and strawberries. Our local retired women's group is scheduling happy hours at various watering holes around Annapolis. This week, we tried Julep. They have happy hour specials from 3 to 6 pm, and there are some really good deals. The house white wine (a chardonnay) was only $5 (so of course, I had three). The appetizers are very good. People in our group tried the chicken sliders, pork sliders, eggrolls, tacos, and fried green tomatoes. All were very reasonable priced. The happy hour prices are good in the bar area. I have a great time at Julep! The food was yummy and came out hot. For appetizer we had the southern egg rolls and they were of so good I can taste them while typing this. I ordered the Hot Smocked Salmon Filet and I enjoyed the sides of collard greens and the Mac and cheese. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the glaze took it up 3 more notches! My daughter got the jambalaya and said it was really good. The service was great, we were greeted with an enthusiastic hello which I loved. It made me really feel like we had chosen the right place for lunch. The wait was not long at all and we were escorted to our seats fairly quickly. If I had to give a time frame I would say between 1-4 minutes. We came on Sunday afternoon at about 3PM. Our server/ waiter Patrick was super nice. He made sure to answer all our menu questions after inquiring if this was our first time dinning with them which it was. He was appreciatingly attentive and checked on us multiple times and we were not his only table. His ability to keep a high level of service while multitasking with large tables did not go unnoticed. The spot is super cute from the outside to the inside. I love the color green so I was pleased when I pulled in the parking lot to park. We ordered the Chesapeake dip- was ok, more crab meat please. I had the sampler which came with wings, ribs, pulled pork, brisket and a sausage link. Ribs and wings were great and had flavor. The pulled pork and brisket needed something to make it flavorful. Brisket was very tender though. Ordered sides of macaroni and cheese and collard greens. Greens were great. Mac was nice and crispy on the outside but too wet and creamy for my liking. Love got jambalaya and yams. He said was ok because it wasn't hot. Like it sat there for a moment before it reached our table. He liked the yams. His sweetness level is like a 6-7. Also ordered a basket of 2 biscuits. They were great. I'm not a biscuit girl so take that into consideration. The butter and jam it came with - butter yes, jam no, not for me. It was sweet and spicy. We ate our leftovers the next day and it was good. Our waitress promptly came over and took our order. We settled on the old bay wings, fried green tomatoes with fried shrimp, fried ribs, and cream crab and sweet corn soup. We enjoyed it all but the ribs left something to be desired. The ribs were greasy and under seasoned. For our drinks we kept it simple with lemonade and a Diet Coke. Based our decision to try Julep on the positive reviews. However, we must have chosen an off day for the kitchen and staff. We ordered the pulled pork plate with red potato salad and cole slaw as well as the burnt end plate with yams. The pulled pork was extremely dry and tasteless. Just a lot of salt. The burnt end plate consisted of dried out stringy chewy bites of meat on top of paste like mashed potatoes that tasted like they were made from instant potatoes. The yams were mushy and probably canned. The service lacked checking in to refill beverages. Overall it was visit that failed and we won't return. read more

This is my new favorite spot in Annapolis. The staff is great and consistent. And establishment is clean, spacious and inviting. The food is good and different from any other spots in the area. Loved their margarita! It was fresh and well balanced. Their chili is amazing; it was more on the sweater side than spicy. It comes with a slice of corn bread which tied the dish together. The Brussels sprouts aren't my favorite, maybe because of the toppings that come on them: candied pecans, bacon and goat cheese. I think it would be good without either the pecans or goat cheese or both. The sprouts are cooked well there is just something about all those toppings. I also had Fried Green Tomatoes. The shrimp and sauce were a great add to Fried Green Tomatoes but I think I would rarely order this. I would rather save room for my entree and dessert. Almost forgot about the Mac and Cheese! It was surprisingly good! It's different than what I am used to, the way it was seasoned and the perfect crisp top was perfect. Would definitely get it again. Now to the entrees! I've tried the Jambalaya, the Waffle Pig and Smoked Fried Chicken. Waffled Pig- I am not a big pork eater but the shredded pork, mashed potatoes and gravy together were very good. It was seasoned perfectly, nothing took aways from the well cooked pork but it was also not gamy at all (gamy taste is why I don't like pork that much). I wasn't a fan of the dressing waffle. It was heavy and had a course dense texture. Don't expect the waffle to be the fluffy Belgian Waffle you get at a breakfast or brunch spot. I could just eat everything else as a meal and be content. The idea of the dish is interesting and has potential though. Jambalaya: The jambalaya comes with rice, but order it with grits to take it to another level. The grits were perfectly cooked and that combo with the jambalaya was perfect. I will definitely continue to order this dish. Smoke Fried Chicken: This is no where close to the typical Fried Chicken you would imagine. It has a little crunch to the skin but besides that this chicken is in a lane by itself. I get this with the dry hot rub (it's not super spicy maybe a medium level). A great balance that comes with the sweet (Maillard reaction) flavor. I would order the Smoke Fried Chicken again as well. For dessert I have tried the pecan pie and apple crisp and I like both. The apple crisp was a little different than I am used too but it wasn't a bad change. Their vanilla ice cream is good as well. I have dined here several times and have never had a bad experience. The fried ribs are excellent, cream of crab and corn chowder is amazing with lots of crab and no shells. I started with a bowl of bisque. It was so rich and creamy not to mention seasoned well. The staff was really nice and friendly and we were very satisfied with the service. As far as the food, I was not particularly blown away, but everything was decent. The food came out luke warm instead of hot, but we were too hungry to care. The smoked chicken was flavorful but I don't know if I am sold on the concept of smoked and fried chicken. There were dipping sauces on the table that were pretty cool to try. The biscuits were the star of the show. We especially loved the honey butter. As was the brisket and Cajun fries. My grandmother likes their wings so much that she placed a to-go order to have for lunch the next day. Absolutely amazing bbq, but it's one of those places where everything on the menu is pretty excellent.
