Miss Shirley's Cafe is a brunch restaurant that puts their own spin to transform regular diner food into something fun and delicious! Everything on the menu looked really good which made narrowing it down pretty difficult, but staff was very patient, kind, and attentive. We were shocked at how big the portion sizes were when the food arrived and were very glad we only ordered two dishes. The oreo-les pancakes came in a stack of 4 and the omelet was also quite huge! The pancakes were very fluffy and packed with oreos. The omelet with the gravy sauce was good, but the hashbrowns were under seasoned (they did have old bay and salt/pepper shakers on the table which was nice to have) and the biscuit was a little denser than I would prefer. Overall, the food was pretty good. There are tons of items we wished we could've ordered so we'd definitely come back to try other things! We got there around 1:30-2 for a late lunch. We were warned of a 30m wait for 6 however were told we would be seated before close time and be fine. I should take a step back, parking when driving east is literally right past the restaurant in the back. I personally think it's almost invisible that way, there is a sign but it looks like it's pointing to a grassy field (my SO felt the same way). I turned up further and U turned and it's more clear going west. The parking says free but the people caravaning with us got dinged for parking being free until 3 (we were there after that) which was not well advertised (SO only figured it out online) and there were no gates or cards when we went in free that I saw. I guess that's not really the restaurants fault but it did sour the experience a little and worth knowing getting there. Anyway, the waiting area is big but it's fairly narrow so if you're not on the bench you're sort of awkwardly standing in the middle of the entry area. But since it's big there wasn't any colliding with people unlike other places I've had to wait. There is outside seating but it was not available the day we were there despite it being 60-70s. Their menu has a good mix of breakfast and lunch foods. My first complaint is that a lot of the stuff is a lot. They don't have a lot of non-complex foods (e.g. plain hamburger) which may turn off some folks notably kids. That said their kids menu combo was pretty diverse itself, both kids with us seemed pleased. I got a pulled pork sandwhich with sweet potato fries. I also saw best pancakes in the country advertised so got 2 pancakes (apparently they have a short stack I did not see on either manu) which I felt was good to know. I was pleased with all my food, though it was understably messy. However, given the length of time it took to seat as well as eat, I did not think it was any better than IHOP or Dennys. So comparing price and boasting, does affect my rating. I suspect some of the price hike is location, perhaps they can afford to do that, they definitely had plenty of customers! NOTE: Usually I'll describe other peoples food but our party was big. No-one had any super remarkable praise or detraction which is another reason for the 3* leaning. If we had not been driving through, hungry and specifically targetted this place I'm not sure we would have stayed. When we left we were not hungry and were happy but I am hard pressed to give more than 3* since it didn't feel memorable just long and expensive. That said, 3 is average, I would eat there again if in the area or even recommend people to try. But I also know that strip has a ton of stellar foods, so...likely you could also find better places even for brunch :) read more

We went for lunch recently. The place is clean and the food was fresh, served hot and delicious. I also appreciated the manager asking if everything was okay. The price is also competitive and comparable with someone of the other restaurants around. Public parking is behind the restaurant. However, it's not free and about $2-3 for 1-2 hours and then $0.99 tax, about $3.99 for 1+ hour meal. The only thing I can say would be the waiter to be a little more attentive like to fill up the water or check on us considering it wasn't that busy but still paid 18% tip. Sometimes you wonder am I just paying because I am supposed to pay and it's an obligation to not look cheap or I am paying with my free will that I am happy with their service. Miss Shirley's was a staple for brunch I saw so we made sure to try to stop in on our way out of town (with a 4-hour drive ahead of us I wanted to carb load). We easily found seating at around 9:45 on a Saturday and did not have to wait. There was a wait by 11am when we left. Our server was very friendly and attentive so we had no issues there. My husband chose a side of chicken sausage and the peach and cheese fresh warm biscuits with jam so he could make his own breakfast sandwiches. I went with a short stack (2) of fluffy specialists pancakes and chose the blueberry white chocolate chip ones. SO good! It said on the menu they were recommended as some of the best in the country from Food network and I can see why. Perfectly fluffy and filling. They had a great breakfast menu - not a lot of specialty coffee drinks though - and plenty of eggs and omelette choices as well as sandwiches and wraps. They have a rewards program you can join if you plan to come often. Parking was street or nearby public lots and it was a easy walk from one of the downtown hotels (10 minutes or so). There are traditional brunch items and also some over the top items Miss Shirley's is known for. Both were delicious! I loved their seasonal items too for the colder months. So fun to walk into Miss Shirley's Cafe with all the memorabilia on the walls. We went for breakfast on a week day morning. The server was very friendly and patiently explained the menu. The Maryland Omelette contained jumbo lump crab meat, cheddar cheese, and tomato with Old Bay seasoning. I was nervous ordering seafood in an omelette but it turned out to be a great decision. You can never go wrong with Miss Shirley's! I came here for Easter brunch with the family, and it was our first time coming to the Annapolis location. We ordered some of our brunch favorites, such as the chicken and waffles, hot chicken deviled eggs (which are to die for!!), and an omelette. It was our first time getting the banana bread French toast, which could possibly be a seasonal menu item, and it was truly satisfying and tasty. I can't say I will order it again, only because I prefer their regular French toast. Surprisingly, it wasn't as busy as we thought since it was Easter Sunday. This entree is served with fried green tomatoes and overall has lots of delicious flavor. There is street parking and garage parking. My husband and I went here for breakfast this morning. We were able to park in the neighborhood and parking garage and it was a very quick walk to the restaurant. We were seated pretty quickly. However, it was a bit of a wait before a waitress came to our table. She apologized and explained that we had been seated in a section where the waitress had not even arrived for work yet. Our coffee and waters were brought quickly. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles. He is a bit of a connoisseur for chicken and waffles, but prefers bone in chicken. He knew ahead of time that the chicken for this meal is a chicken breast. I ordered the banana bread French toast. As far as banana bread goes, it was fine. However, I was not convinced it had been battered and fried like typical French toast. Instead, it just tasted like an elevated banana bread with bananas and chocolate chips on top. It was good, but just not what I was expecting. The restaurant is very nicely decorated, and was not very crowded when we were there. However, I imagine as it gets later. It probably fills up quite a bit. If you're looking to try someplace new and are open to some unique menu items, you might get this restaurant a try. It's a little pricier than most breakfast spots, but it's nice for the occasional treat. If we go back, I will just know what to expect and will likely stick to pancakes. read more

Miss Shirley's was such a treat to visit during Maryland Vegan Restaurant Month! I hope they keep these vegan options available all year long. They were so delicious! Miss Shirley's was bustling on a Sunday morning for brunch. My family waited 20 minutes for a table and the wait was worth it. We were seated amongst other families so my 8 month old was in good company surrounded by other infants. This business is so kid friendly! They had a lot of high chairs available and plenty of space for the kids to sit on the end of the table. For brunch we enjoyed a mimosa, the vegan breakfast bowl, and the vegan powerhouse sandwich. All of the food came out quickly and it all tasted so fresh! The mimosa had pulp in it which gave it a fresh squeezed OJ feel. The corn in the breakfast bowl literally tasted like it was cut right off the cob. And then sandwich had so many fresh veggies! The winning meal was for sure the breakfast bowl. It was colorful, had so many different textures, and everything was flavored to perfection. They nailed cooking the vegan egg and I was worried we were given the wrong meal for a second. The sandwich was good but not great. I think it's a solid menu option for the vegans that just want tasty veggies. It didn't have any flavor that was memorable and I can imagine some people that want something lighter and completely plant-based would really enjoy it. Overall from service to food quality I was so impressed. Their menu is not super vegan friendly, and the Maryland Vegan Restaurant Month menu was extensive and amazing!! I used to love Miss Shirley's but the food is hit or miss especially considering how pricey it is. While the variety and portion sizes are good, but the seasoning has gotten worse. The only seasoning they seem to use lately is sugar. That's fine for pancakes but not for savory dishes like Benedict's and other eggs. I am from the south and what I used to love about Miss Shirley's is that they knew how to use more than just sugar and salt but lately the only thing they really use is sugar. So I wasn't expecting much from my breakfast at this Annapolis location. But I forgot just how all-encompassing their menu is. Vegans in your party? People who eat gluten free in your party? People who just refuse to eat anything that isn't healthy? This menu has something for them all while still having some very fun (and not healthy at all) treats for those who like to calorie splurge at brunch! Our work party shared their Funky Monkey Bread, which is apparently one of their classics. It's a little on the sweet side for me, but I can see why they sell a lot of it - delicious and easy to share with a larger group! I wasn't in the mood for something too heavy (had a work lunch not too many hours away), so I went with their Bmore Breakfast Bowl (scrambled egg topped with parmesan, roasted sweet potato, sauteed spinach, roasted corn, roasted cherry tomatoes and onion with lemon and dill, pickled jalapenos, and sliced avocado. It was healthy while still being very tasty and exactly what I wanted that morning. The decor at the locations I've been to always feel like dated, like they're a corporate chain restaurant, and not a Baltimore institution. But if their decor doesn't impress, wow does their service. Our group was large (maybe 20 people?), and the servers who helped us throughout our meal were so friendly, professional, and helpful. They were pros but just so lovely, too. Overall, not a bad place for a breakfast or brunch if you're in Annapolis. Especially if you value a place that still really focuses on the human connections of good service. TLDR: weak food at a bad price point. Full review: one of the few breakfast places in Annapolis to choose from. Opening at 8am seems a bit late for a breakfast and brunch place. Food was mid. Got the chicken and waffles. Chicken was extremely dense breast cooked to hell. Dry and difficult to chew. Consider brining it guys. Or us a tender. Waffles were cakey and undercooked. Mouth full of dough. Mustard sauce was delicious but came ice cold. Asked for new and it was better. Cheese wasn't melted. Just amateur all around. Wife got grits. Tasteless and stiff. Terrible. Service was ok. Manager handled the cold sauce quietly but didn't say anything besides "enjoy". No seasoning on the side of hash browns I got. And did not come well done like I asked. Atmosphere is like an ihop. Good place for a large group I suppose if you have unlimited money and don't care what the food is like. Overall very expensive for what you get. My second visit to Miss Shirley's wasn't as satisfying as my first. We were greeted immediately and seated by very pleasant staff. My good experience ended there. We were seated in a booth next to the kitchen and bathroom. There was constant traffic in and out and a slight banging from the other side of the wall. We realized it was a workstation. Placing the booth is this space seemed like and not well thought out opportunity to increase profit. We sat and waited over 10 minutes before someone finally realized noticed us and we waited another few minutes. The server was pleasant and friendly and took our drink and food order since we had plenty of time to decide. We both had the Cy Young omelet and I was disappointed. It was flavorless and needed lots of salt to make it palatable. My hash browns also lacked flavor and should have been cooked a little longer. What went well? Everything! A friend and I went at 8 am for breakfast. They were ready to go as soon as we stepped inside. Our host sat us promptly and our server was welcoming and very warm with a great smile. She was so well verdsd with the menu and offered not just the daily specials but even small adjustments that she suggested were great to try as well. We wanted to know if there was any variation of Irish coffee served and she asked the bartender to come and explain a past season drink to us that we agreed to an ordered. It was a great mix of chocolate, coffee liquor, bourbon, and other ingredients that boosted the flavor and then warmed to perfection. We also ordered a regular cup of coffee to go along with our food. For a shared plate we ordered the Cocunut Cream Stuffed French Toast (Challa bread). It had diced strawberry's and sliced and brûléed bananas. Bomb in all aspects: explosion of flavors, huge portion size, and a little messy but not unwelcomed. I ordered the Southern Slammer sandwich and subbed out the pumpernickel for sourdough. one side had avocado spread and maybe garlic (good choice if so) and the other had the friend green tomato with the cheddar cheese, bacon, and over easy egg. I also ordered a side of hash browns. It really all was a wonderful combination for a breakfast sandwich, although a bit large to eat as a sandwich so I ate it in pieces. My friend ordered the Crab Hash & Fried Green Tomato Eggs Benedict. Colorful dish and very harty dish although the ingredients may lead one to think it's light. Very comfortable atmosphere with the booths having large backs. Loved how they are not only full service, but they have a walk up order station. Fried chicken, cheese biscuit, grits, greens and gravy. Overall, the breakfast wasn't bad, just not what I was expecting. The chicken was good, but a bit big - two 1/2 breasts. I didn't find a lot of sausage or ham, but the grits were tasty and the biscuit was delicious. I ordered a caramel apple cider mimosa, which was very tasty and different from anything I've had before (Order This). We just waited 5 to 10 minutes for a table, which was less than we expected. Our server took our order quickly however when it came time to pay, we sat around for a bit. Just the opposite of what I'm used to.
