Representing October 2017 to 2018 alphabet series, P is for Potato Valley Cafe. My girlfriend of that time recommended Potato Valley as I had work travel to Annapolis and asked for her any recommendations. I opted to go with her recommendation, which was a good decision. This is a unique concept right by the Maryland State House, which is baked potato which are loaded with various toppings. My November 2017 visit was very good, and I visited one other time a few years later. Staff was nice as well. read more

I wanted to try this place so bad I drove all the way from Baltimore just to have lunch here. I saw this place from a post on social media and the stuffed potatoes looked SO yummy I was enthralled. Parking in Annapolis near the historic center is virtually impossible. I parked about a 1/2 mile away and walked over. If you drive here, prepare to download a parking app and use it to pay for parking. There is limited indoor seating and even though I came in on a weekday lunch, this place was still very popular. Delicious Spuds! My husband and I just checked in to our hotel and asked for a lunch rec at the front desk. This place was steps away but exactly what we needed. The woman who took our order was helpful and hilarious. I got the Cuban potato and my husband got the NC BBQ version. You can't not love the Potato Valley Cafe if you moderately enjoy baked potatoes. This concept from Sweden brings the standard baked potato to glorious and soaring heights. Yes, the Potato Valley Cafe is located on State Circle in Annapolis which means parking is a challenge, and yes, you'll totally be eating with the crowds of the Maryland legislative set and all of their interns, but it is totally worth the extra time! Let me tell you about my favorite potato that Barbara, the co-owner, makes: the South of the Valley is made with beans, corn, lime, mangoes, peppers and garlic butter. This unassuming easy to miss business with poor signage is definitely worth a visit! A lot cozier inside than you'd think from the outside. Potato's are crisp skinned and very flavorful. If I could eat french fries every day and not get fat and not have high cholesterol, I would. Lol. As an adult I try to make healthier choices, so a delicious baked potato is a great substitute and it satisfies my french fry craving. This is such a quaint little place in downtown Annapolis. It was easy to find and luckily I was able to find street parking nearby. Not sure what I would've done if it was a busier time of day. Also, the staff was really friendly. I was a first timer and they were really patient as I asked questions about the different offerings they had. At any rate I tried the vegetarian combo and there was all kinds of yummy goodness in my potato. There was black beans, corn, lime, mango, peppers, garlic butter, roasted onions, artichokes, and there was even a salad on the side but on top of the potato if that makes sense. The dish was so colorful and there was all types of textures and flavors going on. It was savory, with a touch of sweet, crunchy, soft, warm, with a little cool from the salad. I absolutely love the idea of a baked potato bar, which essentially is what this restaurant is. I can't wait to come back and try some of the options. I only have one complaint. The bottom of the potato wasn't as soft as I would've liked so I didn't eat the skin. Typically I like to eat the whole entire baked potato because they say there's nutrients and stuff in the skin. The food is pretty good, but expensive for what it is. It's usually busy, as it's one of the cheaper (but not cheap) places to eat by Main Street and the State House. Potato Valley Cafe was a pleasant find in Annapolis. This cafe offers a variety of baked potatoes, dressed in different ways: Spinach, Feta & Roasted Garlic Mix, Jamaican Hot Sauce and Cheddar, Texas Salsa with Cheddar, Chicken Curry Mix, Cuban Chicken etc. If you're not in a baked potato mood, they also have sandwiches and salads. The hubs and I shared a Bacon and Cheddar baked potato, adding the garlic butter, which was also served with a side of greens and roasted onions. The baked potato was perfectly cooked, where the potato was fluffy; there was a super generous amount of bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, and a nice pat of the garlic butter. The salad was amazing, as it was lightly dressed with a fresh vinaigrette. It was topped with banana peppers and chock full of fresh veggies - yum! I love that all the ingredients were plentiful! Service was very welcoming and friendly! Please mind that this is a cafe, so there are a handful of bistro-style tables, and larger parties may find it a bit tight. My favorite lunch spot in downtown Annapolis! Food is always very fresh, delicious, potatoes are the best you'll get. Also the sandwiches and salads are very fresh. Best sub roll I ever had anywhere. After we were turned away from Harry Browne's because there was only one waitress and she couldn't handle additional guests, we saw this place and were delighted by the woman at the counter who was so warm and friendly and a pure delight. The food was delicious and came out FAST! We were surprised at how quickly 5 orders (sandwiches, salad, and loaded potatoes) all came out boom boom boom .... but the woman at the counter said it best, "we've been doing this for 28 years, we have it down." I loved seeing her chit chat with customers and making them each feel welcomed. Definitely loved the service and the food and wouldn't have even thought to try it until we stopped in front of the cafe wondering where to go eat at 2pm on President's Day. I have been dying to try this place for a couple years now and it did not disappoint! Customer Service- the guy who was the cashier was extremely nice and super helpful. I was deciding on what to get and he seemed super eager to give me suggestions. Beef Chili & Cheddar Baked Potato- this thing is LOADED. So it has the baked potato, then the cheddar on top (that's melted very nicely), then the chili on top of that (like a heaping amount), and the chips, jalapeños, and greens on top. Before I get to the food, I'd like to say the service received here was above and beyond! This was our first time visiting, but we knew what we wanted before we arrived because there are many options and my indecisiveness in the moment would have held the line up! Anyway, after giving my order for the "south of the valley" potato the extremely nice lady asked if I ever had it before and offered a sample of basically the best of both worlds of my dish, the "vegetarian combo" potato. Oh my...the flavor bombs ignited and my tastebuds sang out as I'm sure I made humming sounds with every delightful chew. The corn, beans, artichoke mix, garlic butter...all of it...just yum!! Needless to say, I stuck with her recommendation, happily took my seat (probably danced in my seat a little) and awaited my loaded potato of joy. My partner got the Chicken Bacon and Cheese potato and was just as wowed by the flavors and deliciousness! Once our meal ended, we hopped on yelp to find a dessert place to help us finish it off. But during our search (yes, here comes more greatness) the lady slid us a piece of cake. Our eyes widened with gratitude as we humbly thanked her before digging into one of THE best pieces of sweet potato cake we've ever encountered. It was just the right size to feed the two of us and super moist. The menu consists entirely of a variety of loaded potatoes, all under $10. If there is a drinks menu I did not see it. You order at the counter, then pick up your food and sit at one of a small number of potatoes. The order taker is gruff, but not quite the soup Nazi. It's okay, the potatoes taste fine. I got the southwest potato, the toppings were good. The potato is super crispy on the bottom and the skin is tough, so difficult to eat those parts. The cafe itself is pretty cute as well. The main issue I had was that we went at lunch time, but we were the first people in and there were maybe two people coming up to be in line, so they were not busy at all. Still, we were immediately being yelled at by the lady at the register to hurry up and to order already, despite the fact that we were just trying to look at the menu. As soon as we stepped into the cafe, she yelled at us to come up and order, but when we tried to check the menu, she would yell at us for not knowing what we want already. She kept rushing us and even tried to get the people behind us to step up and order WHILE we were ordering, but they also needed a moment to check the menu so they did not. She barely gave us time to order the things we actually did want before cashing us out and snatching our card from us. The potatoes take maybe 30 seconds for them to put the toppings on, so I am extremely confused as to why she was the rudest cashier I've ever dealt with when they just had zero rush going on. I have to say this place is one of my all time favorites! I have been coming here since 2001. Most places change over time and it's not always for the best but Potato Valley has only gotten better with time. Like a great fine wine. Of course their main dish is the potato which they bake to perfection and then let you choose form some awesome choices. My personal fave it the Vegetarian Combo Which is a mix of south of the Valley and the Artichoke potato. They also have a vegan options.
