Finding this local diner is your first task, so thankfully GPS will direct you right there. Two small dining areas greet you along with the sweetest servers. Being a single, I naturally sat at the bar counter. A cavernous coffee and an extensive menu quickly appeared. The coffee was hot and fresh, as you would anticipate. Having the counter to myself, I got a recommendation of the skillet breakfast. I was most certainly delighted when it appeared a few minutes later, steaming hot (don't touch the bowl) and looking epic. My server said don't be in a hurry. I think that is the predominant theme here; relax and let life come to you. I had heard great things about the cream of crab soup, so I took two home to share. We came here on a Cold Sunday morning the coffee is wonderful and hot. The staff was quick to take our order. We got there about 9 and shortly after the place started filling up with locals. This place is a nice hidden breakfast spot on the backroads of deale. Has a few tables outside to eat and a good size dining room inside. The service is very friendly and down to earth. Our waitress Mel was very nice and refreshing compared to other restaurants I've been to recently. I had the "generous" ham steak meal, and my girlfriend had the three cheese omelet and added bacon. Both meals came with a choice of bread or biscuit and home style sautéed potatoes with or without onion which was nice because my girlfriend is picky about onions and other things that are common in most dishes. The food was cooked to order which was very nice but took about 45 mins which is a little long for breakfast food. The food was very good though, the other thing was they were sadly out of sausage gravy so I didn't get to try that but overall very good. We took a long drive today...it was a beautiful day! As we checked out a marina or two we realized we were getting hungry. I did a quick search on yelp and found the drift diner. The essence of the ideal breakfast portrayed in a Denny's ad or an IHOP commercial. The food is good--and not in a "greasy," "enormously epic portions," or "new-spin" kind of illusory way. It was the good Yelp reviews that got our attention. However, it was the seeming discrepancy between the positive reaction of other reviewers and the lack of photos for this Yelp spot that ultimately got us out the door on a Sunday morning and into the seats of the Driftwood Diner. We got the Big Driftwood and Driftwood Skillet. After our plates arrived, I realized why there are no photos of the food on Yelp. One's immediate reaction, upon seeing the food, is DIG IN. By the time you realize you should have taken a photo of the food, it's too late; before you is ruins--the unidentifiable smear, crumb of crumbs residue--or merely the moist spot of what once was. Every item in the Big Driftwood was cooked as ordered, appetizing in appearance, and there was no trace of greasy-taste transfer. I only managed to remember to take a photo of the food before I lay ruin to it because my husband reminded me. Had his food arrived at the same time*, however, I doubt there'd be photographic evidence to share. With respect to the Driftwood Skillet, it was tasty but, nevertheless, inspired the thought that it may have been better as separated into its components rather than as melded all into one composite dish. While the Driftwood Skillet wouldn't be our first choice of item to order in the future, it's promising and, based on the Big Driftwood, we do look forward to trying out the other items on the menu. *The plates didn't arrive simultaneously. I observed that this occurred with our table and with others. We've frequented this restaurant on many occasions over the past few years. Had you asked for my opinion 2 years ago - I would have rated this place a 5. Today - it feels as a much different story. My family and I went on a weekday morning and the experience was less than desirable. The staff was cold, opting to entertain their 'regular' customers (mind you - this was the 4 people seated at the bar), as opposed to serving us. We weren't greeted with a hello - instead it was "here are your menu's, what can I get you to drink?" The food arrived quick, it was warm, but it all tasted straight out of the box. The pancakes were great, but the skillet was made with gravy from an envelope (or package), sausage may have been diced up - prefrozen - patties...lacked flavor and the 'home cooked flavors' that it previously had.
