Jugem - AMAZING omelette curry, you won't regret it - Japanese Curry Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

A true hidden gem near downtown. We got there about an hour before closing and both the ladies working greeted us upon entering. There are only about a dozen tables inside so might be tougher if you have a very large group during busy times, but I'm sure they do their best to accommodate you. You can tell the 2 ladies were working hard and were super helpful in explaining the menu as it was our first time. Decor is simple around the restaurant and they even have a small area with cat themed teapots, cups, bowls, and random toys. The food was made fresh after we ordered and too about 10 minutes, though was well worth the wait. Honestly, some of the best curry I've had anywhere. The deep rich flavor was a perfect balance to the fried chicken and rice, and I would have licked the plate if I needed to. I think I cleaned the plate pretty well with a fork and spoon. I will definitely stop by here next time I'm in town and would highly recommend it to any local or visitor to Honolulu. This is a mom & pop restaurant that deserves to have a line out the door to keep them going. Overheard the staff say they had only been opened about 6 months, so definitely want to ensure they are still there next time I make it to the island. Give this place a try if you're a fan of curry, and you won't be disappointed if you appreciate authentic flavor! read more

First off, this is the best curry I've ever tasted! It was so rich and flavorful that I was scraping my plate. It was addicting! Tonkatsu was juicy and cooked to perfection. Also never had breading THIS good! We also highly recommend getting the vanilla matcha latte and fried calamari! Besides the food, customer service was 10/10. The lady that assisted us made us feel comfortable and welcomed. She was really nice! It was pouring rain that day and we parked in the parking lot located in the back. She let us walk through the kitchen to walk out the backdoor to get to our truck to avoid the rain. Lovely! After leaving, I couldn't stop thinking of this place. Will definitely becoming back soon! read more

Second time to Jugem did not disappoint. The service was fast, we received free complimentary macaroni corn salad. This time tried the Fried Chicken Curry which was good but still prefer the Tonkatsu Curry. The Sapporo Beer was ice cold. The dining area is small so you may feel a bit cramped but it's the style and vibe they are going for which I like. read more

My friend and I found this small Japanese curry shop in Honolulu. The lady who served us also cooked our food. She was very kind, and the service was excellent. We were the only ones in the shop, but she let us know about the wait, she refilled our drinks and checked up on us. One order is filling enough. My friend and I shared our orders. The Coedo Curry (Japanese curry) with Spam Fry, the spam fry wasn't oily, and the spam wasn't salty which is great. Sometimes when you fry, it gets oily, but these spams weren't. The Coedo Curry (Japanese curry) with Jumbo Frank was great as well. The rice, curry, and frank combo together was a hearty fulfilling bite each time. I was full after I ate the coedo curry with jumbo frank dish but the jumbo cheese curry pan was my friends and I's favorite. She asked if we were sharing and sliced the cheese curry pan in half for us. Even though we were full, we were tempted to order another one. The jumbo cheese curry pan was hot (so be careful) was delicious, the curry with the melted cheese, and onions with the fry pan. It reminded me of this cheese onion soup but with curry in a bun. It was soo good! I would definitely come back and recommend to others. Good prices, hearty meal, and great service. They just opened up, so hopefully they get more foot traffic (customers). They have a small menu, so I wonder if they'll have new items in the future. read more

We ordered: Coedo fried chicken curry, Coedo curry pan, & Coedo shrimp. It was good curry-- it's a very traditional Japanese curry, but nothing special. Service was a bit slow during prime lunch time. The fried bread with curry and cheese was extremely oily and heavy-- would not order that again. But taste wise it was good if you can handle oily fried foods. read more

It doesn't look like much but Jugem is Japanese curry at its most comforting. Family-owned and operated, all the food is prepared to order and the curry is super delicious. And since their menu consists of all curry items, everything is delicious! I want to highlight the beauty that is the Curry Pan, it was hands down the best one that I've ever had. It was fried fresh and came to our table piping hot. We were even provided napkins and was told to be careful! I am coming back again just to support the business next time I am on the island. And the Curry Pan of course. read more

I really wanted to love this place... My review has nothing to do with the owners or staff - this is strictly a comparison between other Japanese curry places in the area. We ordered the tonkatsu and it was too thick, overcooked, and dry . I suspect many reviewers (like me) are giving the ladies a break and adding an extra star because they are incredibly sweet and we don't want to damage their business, but to be honest Curry House is close by and better . read more

(4/25) My BF and I decided to try Jugem a few weeks ago on a dark and semi rainy evening. I fail to remember what was here before... but we found street parking readily in front of Jugem and went in and were promptly sat by 7:00 PM (we arrived around 6:45 PM). We saw that most of the tables were full but there was a large reserved table. The menu is simple, quaint, and easy to read. I decided on the oyster katsu curry while my BF got the chicken katsu curry. The service was simple, just order, water, and if you want soda, they have that. For now, Jugem is also BYOB. Due to the simplicity of Jugem, their kitchen operations is also minimalistic. You can see the inside of the kitchen from your seats and the restaurant isn't larger than a 2 bd apartment. Our food took about 45 minutes to come out. The couple next to us ate their food within 15 minutes and left as soon as they were served. My BF and I enjoyed our food when it come out. It was crisp, not extremely oily, and served hot. The plates come with a little side of potato macaroni salad as well. I don't know if it was the thickness of the curry, or the richness of the oysters, but I didn't care for the potato mac salad. I would've preferred some type of pickle to help bite through the meal. Overall, I will be visiting Jugem again because sitting down to eat katsu curry is so much better than the haphazard take out from Curry House where you're gambling on a piece of deep fried fat, a spilt container, or even worse, a paper container that disintegrates almost immediately if you don't get home quickly enough! read more

Jugem Japanese curry place on king st next to keeaumoku. Adjacent to La pizza Rina. Pork tonkatsu curry comes with rice and Japanese potato salad . Pork sliced thick and potato salad on the sweet side with corn and maybe relish or mustard. Not a fan of mustard or relish but it was not overly so it was enjoyable. The curry with sausage was really good sausage . It was like a Portuguese sausage with a snap. Coedo curry a little sweet and a hint of spice but not to hot. Ladies working there are so sweet and enjoyable. Highly recommended. Go and try it read more

This is a small little shop with only about 5 tables or so. Went on a Wednesday night at about 6:30pm and it was empty, but they did seem to have a lot of takeout orders. There were two workers - one cook and one server. The server was a little slow, but that was understandable since she was helping the cook with orders. It took about 10 min for her to come take our order and then about 20 minutes to get our order. My friend's tonkatsu curry came first and my udon curry came about 10 min after. By that time, my friend was done eating. He said his tonkatsu curry was really good, so I thought my curry udon was worth the extra wait. I was a bit disappointed when I got my food unfortunately. The curry udon did not have much flavor and was primarily dashi and not much curry inside. I regret paying an extra $9 for the tonkatsu add on as it was not crispy and was just warm, not hot - huge disappointment since my friend said his was fine... Mine was soggy and oily probably because they put it on the dish right after they brought it out and left it there while making the curry udon. The bottom was drenched in oil, which made it hard to eat. Overall, I would not order the curry udon with tonkatsu and would opt for the regular tonkatsu curry. Overall, it's worth a try, just get the regular curry with tonkatsu and avoid the curry udon with the tonkatsu on the side. read more

I've heard great things about Jugem, and I'm so glad I finally got to try this place! There's lots of parking in the back, with entrances on both Keeamoku and King St. After 5PM, the parking is $1 per hour, which can be paid for using a QR code. The inside is pretty small, with only about 5 tables I think. My friends and I came around 7PM on a Friday, and it wasn't too crowded. However, keep in mind that they close pretty early at 8PM. The waitress was super friendly and constantly checked up on us and refilled waters. I got the standard Coedo curry, and my friends and I shared the cheese curry pan. This is not your ordinary curry, as there's little pieces of ground of meat. I really liked the texture and flavor/spice that it had. The cheese curry pan was so delicious! It was super light and flaky, and the cheese was nice and melty. I also got a lychee cream soda, which really made this feel like a Japanese meal. I usually don't get drinks, but the cream sodas were so worth it! read more

The curry was a bit too light for me in terms of flavor and thickness. The tonkatsu was too thick and lean. The batter kept coming off too. The crab cream croquette was not bad. It was fried perfectly. The filling was a light gooeyness but lacked substantial crab or other taste. The lady had amazing service though! She was very attentive and accommodating. She even offered me extra curry for free. read more

Came here because my friend recommended we check it out at some point. He's out of town this weekend so I went alone. Jumbo curry cheese pan! What a delicacy. Basically a deep fried, panko coated grilled cheese sandwich with curry filling. I would come back just for this. I also got their standard Coedo Curry which was solid and homey. It had a nice tinge of sweetness but I wish there was a bit more meat. The staff speaks Japanese which added to the authentic vibe. I asked for takeout box at the end and it even came with a cute note. read more

A neighborhood レストラン full of Japanese flavour; both in the food, the fragrances, and the service. It's somewhat unfortunate to me that the US experience of Japanese food is biased towards Sushi and other high cost/end experiences. Jugem has the neighborhood bistro feel, unpretentious and unrepentantly real. The Co-edo curry style is rich and unabashedly filling. Made in an era where hard physical labor was the norm, with new world ingredients like corn and potato making it over from central and South America to the rest of the planet... these 100 year old dishes are now Japanese staples. So, order a Kirin draft, and settle in for delicious home style 日本料理。 ご馳走様でした read more

This is a small, local spot on Kapiolani Blvd! It offers a cozy, made-to-order experience with fresh food, but lacks wheelchair accessibility features like ramps for those with disabilities. First time eating here after watching a YouTube video on local eats. I swear I've passed this place for years and never noticed it. Their curry is the best I've had so far. If you like your curry meaty and full of flavor, you'll love their curry. The batter that they use too doesn't take away from the flavor of what's inside and it's not all batter either! If you decide to eat in (which you can) don't expect anything fancy. The best places in my opinion are the ones with zero frills. And when you walk in you can immediately feel how homey it is and smell the greasy delicious smell of fried food and curry. The staff is so friendly and it feels like your grandma is cooking for you. There's free parking in the lot in the back (unheard of in this area). It's located right behind the bus stop on the corner of South King and Ke'eaumoku. I can't say enough about the food here and I can't wait to go back and try everything on their menu. A part of me wants to keep this place a secret because it's that good! But I want them to stay in business for a long time because I plan to continue eating here. Thank you Jugem! read more

Curry has great flavor. The fried chicken portion was very generous. I had it on the side because I like my chicken to remain crispy. I ordered mine spicy so they brought chili powder to add. The restaurant is cozy and takes reservations, which I recommend if you're coming in during lunch rush or dinner rush. Curry. Curry. Curry. I'm so happy to find this restaurant whose focus is on Japanese curry. Parking: There is a shared lot behind the building--a shared lot with Eastern Paradise and a few other businesses. I was able to find metered street parking easily. Ordering: You can phone your order in ahead of time but I just placed my order at the counter when I arrived. They said 15 minutes and it came out as promised. Service: Super friendly! I did takeout, but next time I'd like to dine in. The space is small but homey and cozy. Food: Bombdotcom. The curry itself was rich in flavor and had the perfect size chunks of potatoes, carrots, little bits of beef. The tonkatsu was perfectly breaded and fried, and was still crispy when I arrived at home to eat. It comes with a scoop of rice (perfectly cooked, good quality) and little bit of corn, potato mac salad, and pickled red radish. Of note is the potato mac salad. The potato itself (in the salad) was seasoned so well! So often I find these potato mac salads to be bland and bleh, but this one was delicious! You can tell they put time and effort into each component, no matter how small. The jumbo cheese curry pan was out of this world. I ordered it to-go so when I opened the bag at home, it was still in tact as one big piece. The breading on it was still crispy! Can you believe it?! I cut it into diagonals (the only way to cut sandwiches) and the cheese and curry oozed out in the most glorious way. The texture of this sandwich is really a treat. Crispy on the outside, hot, ooey gooey cheese and curry on the inside. And somehow, the fact that this is breaded and fried did not leaved me feeling like I ate something greasy. Very delicious. I can't wait to try some more of their menu items. Verdict: Highly recommended--especially for curry lovers. But even those who aren't, would still enjoy. read more

Went to a early lunch here since my brother wanted to try this place. Our fellow yeeps went here already. They all had good reviews about this place. I had the original curry. My brother had the gyoza curry and my husband had the hot dog curry. Also had their curry fry. My curry was good but where's the meat. Haha. My brothers one looks good and my husband one was a bi hot dog. The curry pan was crispy and the inside was filled with the curry filling the bread was soft then deep fry in panko. I'm not a curry pan eater but I thought it was ok. Got there early about 10 mins before my reservations and had Street parking about three stalls after the restaurant. Very good Japanese curry taste. Always open to trying new places and I love Japanese curry, so we figured why not try Jugem! Parking can be found in the back of the building or a little further down in a paid lot. Street, metered parking is also an option. We ate here on a Thursday night and it was not busy, so we got seated right away. I believe what seemed to be the owners were super welcoming and friendly. We ordered the oyster curry, tonkatsu curry, and a side order of gyoza. The portions of everything were pretty big. The oyster itself was a good size and very flavorful, as was the tonkatsu. I love that it came with the side dish since it complimented the richness of the curry. My favorite was the deep fried gyoza (dumplings)--super crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It was a little pricey for what I'm used to with curry, but the food was still delicious and the workers were attentive and provided great service. This place is super aesthetically pleasing to the eye, however, it did get pretty warm inside due to the lighting. I am curious to try other dishes again if I'm in the area. read more

Nadine C. Had current hours 9:00 am - 6:00 pm. Online says 8:00 am - 8:00 pm. Tuesday is closed and that's today. I have to come back... Well chapter 2, I finally came back. This is another mom and pop place with a small quaint cozy inside. I sat myself in a corner, then ordered the chicken Katsu Curry. Their menu is small...but focus on many different curries. They have a small appetizer of corn, potato salad, and pickled ginger. It works! The corn has texture, potato salad is creamy and tasty. But I must tell you that I'm not a lover of ginger in general. However, I ate the whole thing with pickled ginger...not overpowering...love it!!! The curry was thick and flavor bold with a super crunchy chicken that becomes a little chewy once it sits in the curry...nice with rice. You can extra curry free if there's not enough for rice. I like to soak and cover my rice...heaven. As I was finishing my meal, I saw this Popoki (Hawaiian for cat) tea pot against opposite wall. I got up to check it out and purchased it with two tea cups with saucers. What a way to treat myself?! I'm coming back to try the oyster curry. Yummy...Ciao! read more
