A solid Korean Barbecue place! If you want to treat yo self to some kbbq, this is the spot to go. I used to go to another similar kbbq place nearby with a famous Korean comedian mascot (you know the one), but ever since I ate here, this has been my go-to restaurant. To start with, it has a very nice ambiance that takes you back to old timey Korea. The decor is really fun to look at, and they sell Korean snacks at the register (although I've never actually bought one). The menu is robust and offers combination options if you're not sure which cuts you like. The price is hefty, but you knew what you were getting into when you decided to go kbbq. That said, I think the cuts are VERY worth the price. I haven't had a cut I hadn't liked yet. And it compliments very well with the side dishes they offer. Service was very nice and quick. These servers need to bring out food, attend to the diners' needs AND cook all the meat to delicious perfection! The meat never burns, and when it needs to be, they will cook it to a perfect medium rare (or whatever you prefer). The tables have convenient buttons to call servers if you need anything, but they stop by so often that I rarely need to press it. Came here on a Saturday half an hour after it opened and thankfully it wasn't packed. I've been here before around dinner time and there's always a long wait out the door. I love that this place is in the same strip mall as H Mart and makes in convenient and there's a large parking lot attached to it. In that area, it's hard to find street parking so you could really appreciate that there's a parking lot. I had one order of USDA Marinated Prime Kalbi $34.99 and it was enough to fill me up! I noticed the marinated version and the non-marinated version was the same price so I said why not get it already marinated? They gave me soooo many free appetizers that come with your meal, it includes salad, macaroni salad, steamed egg, kimchee soup, tofu, onions, and the list goes on! I also really appreciated that the ventilation was awesome, you never felt overwhelmed with smoke in your face (which I know is sometimes a struggle in other KBBQ places). The meat was so juicy, tender, and flavorful. I really enjoyed the first bite and every bite after that. They also give you lettuce leaves that you can wrap over your meat and eat it like a little burrito. Overall the experience was great. Where should I start, there are so many things that I want to complain about. HORRIBLE service, HORRIBLE manager, food below mid, smoke vacuum broken, cooking fire broken, and most importantly this Jongro is a FAKE. IT IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES IN MANHATTAN. This Jongro is a Jongro franchise, I asked the manager herself and she told me "different owners, completely different, not related". She also said "quality, items, and price do not have to be the same". If you enjoyed the Jongro in the city, DO NOT COME HERE. Ok, the introduction of the restaurant is done. Time for the main part of this review. Service service service. It is HORRIBLE, the WORST that I had ever experienced. They gave my table plastic spoons. Like what the f? All of the other tables have those metal spoons, but only our table has plastic spoons. I pointed this out to the manager later on and she said they were "extremely busy and did not have time to do the dishes". That is not an excuse, like come on now, you made me wait 30 minutes to get seated. You are telling me you couldn't even wash 4 spoons??. They also never refilled our waters. At the start, our table did not have any cups, just a jug of water. We asked for cups and the waiter(a fat teen, manager/owner's son) said "Wait, we are busy" in a rude way, he didn't even look at us and went and helped the other table. After 10 minutes we finally received our cups. After we finished our water, we asked for more, they took away the empty jug and never came back with water. We reminded them twice and still nothing happened. After the cooking fire broke down, the waiter still put our orders on the grill even though there was no fire at all. After they noticed, the beef was half sad gray color and red. They put the grill on the floor and tried to fix the fire. After they fixed the fire, I asked if we could get a fresh order. The waiter said I have to ask the manager, which I did. I called her over and she said "it is fine, the meat is not out for 5 minutes yet, we cannot give you another one". Then I confronted her about the poor service with the water, plastic spoons, and the difference in quality between the Jongro stores(this is when she told me about franchises and stuff). All she said was "I am sorry" "we are extremely busy"(even though half of the restaurant was empty when we walked in, we still had to wait for 30 minutes)and "you expected too much from us". Her son also said "if you know our service is bad why did you guys order more?" in a mocking voice. The service here is just HORRIBLE, DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. Food was extremely below mid, NOT WORTH the price AT ALL. Little portion, beef Kalbi (marinated and unmarinated) are extremely hard to chew, I literally cannot rip the beef apart by using my teeth and the wooden chopsticks. Portion for everything is also extremely small. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND. There are so many other great Korean BBQ restaurants nearby, even though the wait is way longer, the quality would be so much more worth it. I've been wanting to check out Jongro for a while and when I heard my family requesting Korean BBQ for a birthday celebration, I decided this is it! Okay fine, so I found out the Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong was closed first then I resorted to Jongro. I needed a restaurant that was large enough for a party of 10 and wouldn't rush us out because space is tight so Jongro seemed to be perfect for this. I called a few days before the event and nagged a reservation for 10 on a Sunday evening at 5:30pm - easy, peasy lemon squeezy. The day of the event I received a phone call around noon, which I had ignored because I thought it was a scammer. No voicemail left. Again this same number calls at 3pm to which I ignored once again. However this time I entered the number on Google and discovered it was Jongro and I called back immediately. They confirmed my reservation but wanted to know if separating my party of 10 into two tables was okay. I was very upset because I am being told of this 3 hours before the event that at our celebration dinner we will be sitting apart. How am I supposed to find another location last minute? The lady proceeds to tell me they have two tables for larger parties but usually the hostess/worker would call days in advance to confirm parties and for some reason no one called me so I no longer have that large table. Anyway I said I had no choice at this point but to keep the reservation and hung up. I called back a few minutes later to express my frustration to suddenly be told by a different lady that the woman I spoke to earlier was new and had no idea what she was talking about. That being said, my blood pressure had risen earlier all for naught. Anyhow fast forward three hours later, we all arrived and were seated. It really is still two separate tables that were pushed together but its fine. We did not get the large tables as anticipated but as long as we fit and did not have to sit separately I suppose. Servers were very attentive and friendly. We ordered a large platter of beef and pork, several orders of seafood pancake, and a japchae. I thought the seafood pancake and japchae were good. Standard, but tasty. I did however find the meat platters to be quite bland... perhaps needed some marinating. It was still quite yummy though after you add the onions, garlic, sauces, and such. That being said the meats really did come up short for me at least compared to other Korean barbecues I've been to. I would give a negative star if Yelp allows me to. I'm a big fan of jongro until yesterday. I'm never going to step a foot into this location. It was 100 degree hot in New York on 7/16. My friends and I were sat in a corner by the host and 15 minutes into our meal, we were HOT. We thought it was from the bbq grill on top of the humidity outside, so we ordered beers, we fanned ourselves with the menu & then we turned off the grill. I couldn't help but to ask the waitress if they could turn up the AC. To my surprise, her response was :" you didn't know this booth in the corner has no AC" I was LIVID. I went to the host and his response was :" we didn't have a choice" I was shock, I told him choice? He didn't ask us if we wanted to wait for AC seat or to be in a corner while bbq without AC. He literally ignored my request to move and it was so frustrated until I spoke to the captain. They moved our table- our food with literally NO SERVER to follow up. We were left by the table with left over food from the other table & did we order more food? Yes we did, what was the wait? It was 15-20mins after constant reminders to bring the order. We came for dinner tonight and we had a horrible dining experience. First, they told us it was going to be a 25 minutes wait. When we were told that we were next and we came out to gather the rest of our party, they mistakenly seated another party instead. All in all, our total wait time was 40 minutes. Second, the music was really loud crunk/trap music with expletives when there were kids and seniors around. We asked them to turn the music down and their response was "other customers enjoyed it" then they ignored our table for the rest of the night! We had to grill our own meat using chopsticks which could have resulted in burns. Third, they overcharged us by $36. Our final receipt had menu items that we did not even order. Fourth, they seated another couple next to our table which was super close to ours. The lack of space between the two tables led the server to lean over our food and their shirts literally touched our meat that they placed at the edge of the table. Lastly, there was a strand of hair on our pork jowl order. Lastly, the banchan is very limited. (There was none of seaweed, fish cakes, marinated cucumbers, bean sprouts, sweet potatoes.) Some other sides they offer are tofu, streamed egg, scallion salad, pickled daikon, salad, kimchi, regular jalapeno, and nokdu-muk (mung bean jelly which is clear and topped with some kinda sauce). Also this is a small detail but the pork platter comes with mushroom! The meat tastes fresh and the people working when we got there were pretty attentive. I recommend getting rice as a side if you're craving carbs since the rest are veggies or protein. For sauces they offer sweet soy sauce, some other sauce, and salt LOL. The staff overall is very friendly and are able to answer any questions that you have. When you sit down. All of the side dishes are brought to your table while you select the proteins that you like. I waited and got sat 5 mins later, not sure why since the restaurant was empty. They told us last call was at 12:15, which didnt make sense if they're closing at 2am. Whats the point of "extended hours" if your kitchen closes at 12. Whatever, we ordered a seafood pancake, a beef tongue and a prime marinated kalbi.. our usual. The 2 meats hit the table and we did even receive our sides yet. However, the table who sat down after us receives it first.... like seriously? Clearly we were seated first. Then our waitress started grilling the meats. I asked her for some bean paste and she just gives me a blank stare and goes, oh theres no more. YOU ARE A KBBQ PLACE... how you gonna tell me there's no more bean paste. I'm not sure why but everytime I come here to eat she ends up my waitress but is the most rude person ever. Always rushing, talks with an attitude and generally not nice. So she gets me some sesame oil with salt and pepper. When she's almost done grilling my kalbi, I ask her if the pancake was still coming. Her response was, did you order it? um... you're my waitress. you should know I ordered it! Clean Classic Quick Korean BBQ What used to be a neighborhood landmark McDonalds is a Korean BBQ joint. I like the classic motif and decor cause you feel like you just stepped into pre-industrial Korea. The menu has photos which is friendly for non-Korean customers. They have different USDA quality cuts of meat. They differentiate the USDA Prime from the regular cuts. However, they don't indicate if its choice, select, or standard. The prime does definitely stand out in flavor. The "everything meat special" is large enough for two people, three small children. It comes with thinly sliced brisket, Thicker cut rib eye steak which Koreans call "Deung Shim," regular kalbi, and prime Kalbi. Don't be alarmed because the portions don't look like much but when it is grilled and cut by your expert grill master and eaten properly with all the accompaniments; you will be satisfied. The standout cut was definitely the prime short ribs, "Kal Bi." The prime Kal Bi melts in your mouth like butter. They provide all the necessities such as a dipping station with fermented soy bean paste and sesame oil, and salt. I like that they let you decide how much salt you want in your sauce. The onion were sliced thinly and the marinade had just the right amount of sweetness and tang. The steamed egg was good and I could taste the shrimp paste in there. The fermented soy bean stew or "Dwen Jang Jji Gae" wasn't too bad either. They had little baby squids and zucchinis in there too. The greens were fresh and the daikons were as well. The best side I appreciated was the pickled jalapenos. The service was quick and efficient. Our grill master didn't rush and waited till we finished the alrready cooked portions before grilling up some more meat. In other K' BBQ restaurants, the grill master tends to grill everything quickly but that often results in cold and flavorless meat. The side dishes were replenished upon request. It would be nice if they'd be refilled without asking. All in all, my first experience at Jong Ro was a good one and I will be back for more. read more

Been here both for lunch and dinner. The quick and dirty is that lunch is the way to go due to its great value. Dinner is a bit expensive but I'll get to that. Lunch has a bunch of set menu options that give you a side of bbq meat with either a Korean stew or other entree for a really great price. The meat is cooked in the kitchen but the restaurant gives you a complimentary table side steamed egg dish which is pretty awesome. My spicy cold noodles and kalbi were great and it ran under $15. Winner. (5 stars) Dinner offers the same variety of meats and stews but at regular a la carte price. The price isn't out of line with any other a la carte KBBQ places but I just feel that if I'm going to spend $30 bucks or more per plate of meat, I probably should be doing AYCE instead. That being said, the meat quality was great. The kalbi was tender, marinated perfectly and melted in your mouth. Let's get through this quickly, shall we? 1. the yookhae (beef tartar) - think of (what you hope is) a higher quality cut of beef, marinated in the standard sesame and soy sauce mix, but raw. With a raw egg. It's something I loved as a child (because I was a fatty fat fat child), and Jongro did it well. My only issues with the dish were that the portion was pretty small, and the meat to chopped onion ratio was dangerously close to 1:1. I love onion, but.... jeez. Delicious though! If you've never tried it, this is one of the few places in Queens that still do it. 2. a meat combo thing - I'm sorry, I know, this is a terrible description, but it was a family dinner, so naturally mother took control of the menu. It was their marinated galbi, galbi ssal and a steak (straight up, a steak). The meat was noticeably better this second time around as the flavor was closer to what I had hoped it would be. 3. Kimchi Jjigae - You will never find me ordering kimchi jjigae because I strongly feel it's one of those dishes you make at home, and not waste money on at a restaurant, but we needed a stew, so we ordered it. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I was relieved to see that they didn't mess up such an easy dish. So I enjoyed the meat more this time around (that's what she said), but why the same 3 star rating? I feel like the restaurant is still lacking. Even the fact that my sister-in-law knows the operations manager couldn't get the experience to what I've grown accustomed to from the other Korean BBQ restaurants in the area.
