Jonathan restaurant is a nice Family restaurant with a beautiful menu to choose from. Although we came here for the sole purpose of renting the event space (this visit) everything was great. We dined on appetizers of chicken tenders, spinach and artichoke dip, wings and mozzarella sticks your name a few; the appetizers were tasty and quite filling. The two critiques I would have to mention is that the lady in the lobby wasn't very friendly to the guest or customers coming in, and the parking lot needs some TLC because there are colossal size holes in sone of the spaces. read more

My girlfriend and I stopped at Johnathan's for supper this afternoon and were very disappointed. First, there was only one server on duty. She did a good job for being pulled in so many directions. My chief complaint are their charges. I had a bowl of oatmeal, 3 link sausages and toast. Now the menu prices showed me I would be paying about $10.00 approx. Was I shocked when the bill came and my part was $17.00!! I was told that all prices on the menu are more after 2pm so you can't go by menu prices. No one told me that, and I'm posting this to warn you to be careful. All prices are not the same as printed on the menu after 2 pm. Personally I think that should be against the law! We will never return. To pay that amount for what I received is highway robbery. Avoid this restaurant after 2pm!! read more

Honestly, this is your basic breakfast place that seems to be always busy. The building is pretty large and when you first walk in you see this giant painting and a water fountain next to it. Besides that there's a basic decor and something I guess you would find in a Denny's or IHOP. Our waitress did seem to have her hands full since she did forget our drink orders. My girlfriend and I have a long day of hiking, so we both ordered a bagel with ham, egg and cheese with a side of potato's. Again, this I felt was just a basic sandwich but it hit the spot, so that was exactly what we needed. When we left my girlfriend went to the restroom and she said that it was disgusting inside. I'll pass. You do have to go to the front counter to pay your tab and that was a bit of a wait. There was a line when we went upfront and there was nobody behind the counter for a bit. That was the only frustrating thing we had to deal with considering how we were on a time crunch to head to Crowder Mountain, which was an hour away and we still needed to make another stop. She needed boots and I needed to pee, I don't do dirty restrooms. This does seem like a hot spot so they're definitely doing something right. read more

Lots of older locals at this spot on a Saturday morning for breakfast. Generally a good sign. Food was solid but pretty standard fare. Good value for the price. I had biscuits and gravy, which were tasty and loaded with sausage. Mine cost about $4.25, so less expensive than my normal breakfast choice. Shelly had scrambled eggs, sausage patties and grits. Grits were a bit running, again standard breakfast fare, but not something to write home about. Solid, good breakfast. Three stars. read more

Attended a reunion of the EAL Retirees lunch here with about 20 others. It seems to be quite a popular place for lunch as well as breakfast. There are several dining rooms but the main room is quite open and large. I had the grilled salmon with okra and squash, it was good. If I could give zero stars.... I would. Went there with my family. Once we were seated it took at least 15 minutes just for her to get our drink order. When she returned with the drinks she placed the whole tray on some one else's table and said "can I put these here for a minute" and walked away. My boyfriend got up and brought all the drinks over. He then went to the front and poured our coffees himself and brought them to the table since she forgot those. Fast forward. It had been 40 minutes and still hadn't taken our order. Fast forward 1 hr and still no food. We had to go so we asked her to just pack the food to go. When my daughter was eating her pancakes... she found a worm like object 1/2 way through and pulled it out. ( see pic) It was the most disgusting thing we had ever seen... she puked. Owners need to do better! I would of gave 5 stars if I was rating food and servers! The sign on the front door lets you know $1 will be added to each meal, they are really adding it to every item (even when you substitute English muffin with toast). When asked about the prices, the girls have no choice but to add $1 to every single item on the bill per owners. Mind you, when asked to speak or reach out to owners- I was told they are too busy and don't speak to customers, EVER. $51 for 3 of us to have breakfast was just crazy and won't ever happen again. BIG portions is the first way I would describe Jonathan's. The special when we went was meatloaf, but when we ordered we ended up with half of a meatloaf in one serving. Amazing. The food was great, and the service was good too. The nachos have spaghetti sauce, and even though they warn you of that before hand, it was still interesting...ultimately good, but interesting. The food is great, outstanding! Never had anything that wasn't excellent but the servers while efficient can be very rude. Don't know if I will return. When I tried to politely question about a charge on my bill, I was treated very rudely. When I calmly said that I was not being heard, was told that I was crazy and the server stomped off. BTW I still left a good tip because I felt initially that it was a misunderstanding. Now, I am sad to think that I will not be welcomed there again. read more

I don't have a lot to say about Jonathan's, the outside needs a makeover really badly it just looks dirty and unkept. The inside could use an update as well I know it's an older restaurant but actually looking old isn't helping them get business. It's right across from one if the busiest shopping spots in Matthews but I would drive right by it and not even know it was a restaurant. The food is ok I had the Western omelette and Hash browns which were cold. My mom got a vegetable plate and a salad which they brought at the same time as the hot food. I had breakfast here this morning, and it was really pretty good. The place was packed, as it's apparently quite popular with the family set. There were kids and grandmas and moms and whole flocks of people in clusters. It's huge inside, so it would definitely be a good place for groups. Four of us had breakfast for less than $30, so it's totally affordable. There's a gorgeous duck pond outside, so I'm excited for the next time my niece visits. We'll go there so she can feed her leftover biscuits to the black swans. Jonathan's also hosts frequent little shows, which definitely cater to an older (read: senior) crowd, but some of them look like they could be kind of fun. They have Blues Brothers impersonators and a Roy Orbison impersonator on a regular basis. This is the kind of place where you have regulars and the servers ask you about how your kids are doing (not that I have any). Put very local and personal - a nice little addition to Matthews restaurants. The building itself is "off the beaten path" located near the Target in Matthews. It has a strange set up - as if it was converted into a restaurant after the fact. It seemed to be like a meeting hall or common space since you come in and there is a huge greeting area and front desk. Since it was a slow night, only half of the dining room was being used - I can imagine the place going super crazy for breakfast on the weekends, but at least they have the extra space. read more

Went here for the first time and didn't have a great experience. To start they sat us at the back of the restaurant (blocking the emergency exit). The AC was leaking near our table and when we asked to move they were very reluctant and ultimately didn't move us. We came for brunch so I decided to try a lunch item: the chicken parm which was very underwhelming, the chicken part was okay but the sauce was just not good, worse than something store bought. TERRIBLE experience this morning at Jonathan's. Everything was fine until we went to check out. The total did not seem right, when I reviewed the bill there was so many extra charges that no one told us about. My sister ordered an omelet with no tomatoes, sub olives. There was a $3 charge for that. We ordered a side of salsa. They charged $3 for a side of salsa. Those would have been ok, IF we had been told about it! I ordered the deluxe breakfast which is $8.25 for 2 hotcakes, 2 eggs and bacon. I added chocolate chips. I fully expected to be upcharged for chocolate chips. However, they charged me $15.95!! They claimed I couldn't add chocolate chips to the deluxe breakfast and I had to pay everything a la carte. So $7.70 for CHOCOLATE CHIPS?!? When I questioned it, the woman working the cash register was extremely rude and kept telling me there's nothing she can do, she just works there. I asked for the manager and was told his name is Pete and he was in the back cooking the food and wouldn't come out. She just kept telling me that's "how it is." The poor waitress was right there with me and she was confused. She said she just started and didn't understand either. She was a sweetheart! Her name was Darnell. The woman working the register was condescending and rude. She should NOT be working with the public. After refusing to help me for 10 minutes and holding up the line (which was embarrassing,) they FINALLY begrudgingly gave me a $7 discount. That definitely didn't make up for the way I was treated. There are so many restaurants to chose from, stay far, far away from the place and go somewhere where they are honest and value their customers! read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! Ordered some simple French toast and there was a 4 in piece of blonde hair in my toast! How did I discover it? I bit into the toast! How disgusting! Went back to the establishment and was simply told "sorry about that". She wasn't even surprised to hear that I found hair in my food. As if this is something that happens often. Also, other items in my order were not complete as they should have been. I communicated my dissatisfaction to the person "in charge" and she completely ignored me and walked away. My husband and I have eaten here for breakfast several times lately and, while the food is OK, the surroundings and atmosphere are not. This place needs a make-over in the worst way! The windows are so dirty and the blinds are nasty-looking. A fresh coat of paint and a serious updating would go a long way to making this establishment look a lot more appealing. Somewhat of a decent establishment, not the best service! I seen someone receive their food which was a chicken Philly cheesesteak, the individual opened the sandwich and noticed a hair within his food. The individual seemed to be calm and understanding about the situation and notified the waitress. He was told that they would not charge him for the inconvenience of the human hair in his food. That he would only be charged for the drink he ordered. He then was offered by the waitress to remake the food!! He gladly accepted the offer and asked if it could be to go being that he may of had other business to take of. After that; the individual was confronted by an older lady ( possibly management ) that he failed to pay for the order that was bagged for him to go..... Moral of the story is that even if hair is found in your food you will still be charged , to a new customer to the establishment that is very unprofessional and distasteful. The restaurant interior is falling apart, the food was bland, and the service on par with Waffle House. How they got a 97 food inspection rating is a miracle or a payoff. I go to Jonathans 1-2x/month and it is always excellent food. I hardly ever have to wait and the booths are quite large and comfortable. I usually go there for breakfast, always get 2 eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, toast and coffee and the price is Great! I recently met some friends there for dinner and a meeting, we had half the restaurant to ourselves. So they were very accommodating for our business presentation. Their menu is quite expansive, so many choices for dinner, I took a good 15 minutes to decide. The wait-staff are always attentive and come by with refills on the drinks every 5 minutes. So if you are looking for great food and a more than reasonable price, you need to go to Jonathans! read more
