Jonathan restaurant is a nice Family restaurant with a beautiful menu to choose from. Although we came here for the sole purpose of renting the event space (this visit) everything was great. We dined on appetizers of chicken tenders, spinach and artichoke dip, wings and mozzarella sticks your name a few; the appetizers were tasty and quite filling. The two critiques I would have to mention is that the lady in the lobby wasn't very friendly to the guest or customers coming in, and the parking lot needs some TLC because there are colossal size holes in sone of the spaces.

Honestly, this is your basic breakfast place that seems to be always busy. The building is pretty large and when you first walk in you see this giant painting and a water fountain next to it. Besides that there's a basic decor and something I guess you would find in a Denny's or IHOP. Our waitress did seem to have her hands full since she did forget our drink orders. My girlfriend and I have a long day of hiking, so we both ordered a bagel with ham, egg and cheese with a side of potato's. Again, this I felt was just a basic sandwich but it hit the spot, so that was exactly what we needed. When we left my girlfriend went to the restroom and she said that it was disgusting inside. I'll pass. You do have to go to the front counter to pay your tab and that was a bit of a wait. There was a line when we went upfront and there was nobody behind the counter for a bit. That was the only frustrating thing we had to deal with considering how we were on a time crunch to head to Crowder Mountain, which was an hour away and we still needed to make another stop. She needed boots and I needed to pee, I don't do dirty restrooms. This does seem like a hot spot so they're definitely doing something right.

Lots of older locals at this spot on a Saturday morning for breakfast. Generally a good sign. Food was solid but pretty standard fare. Good value for the price. I had biscuits and gravy, which were tasty and loaded with sausage. Mine cost about $4.25, so less expensive than my normal breakfast choice. Shelly had scrambled eggs, sausage patties and grits. Grits were a bit running, again standard breakfast fare, but not something to write home about. Solid, good breakfast. Three stars.

If I could give zero stars.... I would. Went there with my family. Once we were seated it took at least 15 minutes just for her to get our drink order. When she returned with the drinks she placed the whole tray on some one else's table and said "can I put these here for a minute" and walked away. My boyfriend got up and brought all the drinks over. He then went to the front and poured our coffees himself and brought them to the table since she forgot those. Fast forward. It had been 40 minutes and still hadn't taken our order. Fast forward 1 hr and still no food. We had to go so we asked her to just pack the food to go. When my daughter was eating her pancakes... she found a worm like object 1/2 way through and pulled it out. ( see pic) It was the most disgusting thing we had ever seen... she puked. And of course we weren't touching the rest of our food!! Ended up in the trash. So appalled with this place. DO NOT GO THERE!!! Will NEVER return. When I went to call the place they were already closed. Worst experience EVER!!!

I don't have a lot to say about Jonathan's, the outside needs a makeover really badly it just looks dirty and unkept. The inside could use an update as well I know it's an older restaurant but actually looking old isn't helping them get business. It's right across from one if the busiest shopping spots in Matthews but I would drive right by it and not even know it was a restaurant. The food is ok I had the Western omelette and Hash browns which were cold. My mom got a vegetable plate and a salad which they brought at the same time as the hot food. Over all the whole experience was mediocre even the service was just ok.

Used to be a good place with fair prices, but now kids milk is $4.50 each - more than price of a gallon of milk. Won't be going back anymore

John St. in Matthews, NC (980-226-2779, yannibistro.org).  The restaurant, owned and operated by Yanni, serves plant-based food that's vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free - and healthy!  On a recent visit I tried one of his most popular sandwiches - the Falafel Pita, stuffed with homemade Falafel, red onions, sumac, lettuce, and tahini (without the hot sauce). I enjoyed  a  rich European-style coffee, one of many beverage options that includes a wonderful selection of imported teas and an extensive list of wine and beer. For dessert, I chose a French macaron - a vivid reminder of Paris!  My delicious, healthy lunch cost around $12!   Yanni also offers other variations of the Falafel Pita, plus sandwiches made with fresh ingredients, healthy salads, and homemade soups (try the Lentil). His breakfast menu features a variety of omelets, sandwiches, and bagels. Yanni has created an elegant dining space in a part of the restaurant, where patrons may enjoy amazing entrees such as Pan-Seared Salmon, Herb-Roasted Lamb Chops, Faux Filet a la Sauce au Poivre et Cognac., and a Classic Burger. Typically, when someone from a restaurant reaches out to me about my review, especially when they are not 5 star, I instantly become skeptical. However, this owner made me feel comfortable to share my thoughts and explain how my visit went before anything else. Over the years, I have received tons of owners offering me a free meal in exchange for my integrity but I could tell this owner was extremely genuine and wanted to make sure my voice was heard. The initial post will remain the same but I wanted to amend some of the initial remarks including the service. The first time I tried this place, I received service that was not in alignment to the core values and standards this restaurant upholds, which, I am human and I have worked in food service for years so trust me, I get it. Since being back twice since my initial visit, I have been treated like family. The service has been up to par and the staff has been incredibly friendly. As far as the ambiance, it gives the feel of an old diner which makes it charming and lovable. Perhaps, some restorations and furnishings can be done nothing that isn't manageable. Lastly, I wanted to make sure to do a thorough review of the menu so when I went back twice after my initial review, I tried a menu item for each the breakfast menu and the dinner menu. The food was great! It was favorable, warm and packed with fresh ingredients. I tried the ribs and Mac and cheese as well as a breakfast plate on two separate occasions without letting the restaurant know I was coming back for a remake. The only thing I wasn't super thrilled about was the Mac and Cheese, other than that it was good. It goes to saying that their standards are commendable as they do care about their service, food and experience of the customers.

That said, Yard Dog is not a dog at all, but a superb little restaurant with a great menu and mouth-watering foods. Oh boy! Wife and I entered and were surprised at just how small their dining area was. Couple that with a not-so-pleasant noise level, you will have difficulty seating more than four and conversation will be tough, but not impossible. You came to eat. It is a very cozy, busy and fun place. In addition to the super menu there is a chalk board with specials. Check those out first. I spotted catch of the day, which was Red Snapper, a favorite of mine, which came with two sides ($26). When served, it was three fillets, so the whole eatable parts of the fish, topped with a Cajun spice mixture and a horseradish sauce. This is a to-die-for or last meal item. The fish was perfectly cooked and my side of collards were as mammy has done for eons: flavorful with pork and a perfect complement to my catch of the day. And the fried okra was great and I paid the $.50 for ranch dressing, as fried okra SHOULD be so complemented. Wife does not eat sea food, so she was, initially, confronted with the challenge of finding a dish without seafood in it. She did. There were a number of options, like pasta with Andouille sausage ($21) which is listed as with shrimp, but they omitted the shrimp for her. She also spied blackened meatloaf and some other items for the next visit. The place is busy and the wait staff is hustling as fast as the kitchen can get orders out. The kitchen looks so small, but they are a blur of motion cooking and plating. Kudos to the kitchen and servers. Our server was Sophie and she was excellent. There are beverages on a separate menu, mostly wine, beer and hard cider, with some non-alcohol items also available. We both had hard cider at $6 a can. Draft beer was available at $7 a glass. We will definitely return, even give lunch a try. I will most likely answer the siren call for five stars, which is certainly in the cards. See for yourselves.
