Glad I stopped in! The Matthews Wine Cellar has a really nice selection of Old and New World wines carefully cultivated by the owners and staff. We enjoyed a California red blend (Oak Farm Tievoli) which was really nice. They have a bottle shop, but they also do wine by the glass, beer, and mixed drinks (including $5 mimosas). MWC also has a kitchen with an elevated menu of nibbles. If I hadn't been on my way to eat and stopped in while waiting in a reservation, I definitely would've tried a couple of things. The pretzels and Buffalo Bleu Cheese Pub Chips caught my eye. Hopefully, I'll try those soon! Give MWC a shot if you like great people, wine, and a comfortable atmosphere. read more

Fantastic wine and food in downtown Matthews!! New ownership 2020 changes for the food menu and wonderful wine selection. I shared the caprese flatbread with mozzarella cheese and tomatoes and pesto sauce. It was delicious and good size for sharing. The cheese platter had a bunch of cheese choices. There's brie, cheddar, gouda and Swiss cheese among apples and strawberries and just a few bread crackers. I think it was shareable and good presentation. The French wine was a Sauvignon blanc for $8. Crisp and citrus flavors! They have updated their seating with couches and stuffed comfortable chairs. Good service and friendly staff. Lovely patio options for wine and beer lovers!! Parking is in the lot nearby or walking from the Matthews library lot. They are expanding their hours and includes lunch and dinner. read more

What a great place with wonderful potential, The ambiance is just so relaxing, the Charcuterie Board was delicious and Plentiful, The service was very good but... I Wish I did not have to say anything but the clientele that came in there while we were there was the kind who brought it way down, they serve liquor here and when the regulars came in it went down hill quickly, loud obnoxious, and drinking a "lot" of booze. They offer games, outdoor seating a comfortable lounge type of indoor seating and the only downfall or the impression I get, is there are a few places in the area offering the same thing, right? So there is a desperation kind of feeling to compete and to accept all who enter, so if you go the the other establishments on the main drag they are family friendly, and quickly this stopped being this about 10mins of us being here. There is still hope but my thought would be, if they are already intoxicated when they come in or are getting to that point while here, be the person who wants other clientele that will help you continue into the future. This is the perfect location for family friendly drinking venue, you have to be able to control your surroundings as the manger/owner/server and they did not. I Will go back because we did like it and see if anything has changed. read more

After waiting an hour for food at another Matthews restaurant and seeing that the Seaboard was packed, hubby and I decided to stop in The Black Chicken. Mistake number two. We were starving, so we tried to order food before wine; had to wait. There was one gal manning the register and delivering drinks and food to patrons. I assume the man who left and ran to HT for supplies was the manager? We were about to leave after waiting 20 minutes for a salad and sandwich. Honestly wish we had. My chef salad was topped with prepackaged, salty deli white meat. Hubby's sandwich was supposed to be toasted, but was not. It was hard, though, as in stale bread hard. Lesson learned. Only reason I gave it four stars is because I would love more of a wine selection. They do have several wine bottles available for purchase though! Was passing through Matthews and thought it would be nice to stop in for a quick dinner and some wine. We saw they had outside seating so we walked in, asked for some menus, and found a seat at a table near the door. The first thing we noticed was a few cigarette butts on the table next to the ash tray. Then we smelled the table just on the other side of the door had several other people also smoking, too. I understand outdoor smoking is permitted at restaurants in NC, however this was something we would have expected at a bar and not a venue that is listed as a wine cellar. Such a great wine bar here in Matthews! Cellar & Ale just reopened a few weeks ago, and we had such a good time here! Inside, there is a huge bar to sit at, as well as several tables. They also have one long table. They have a good wine and beer list, and I enjoyed my Spanish red wine. They have several tables outside, and my friends and I sat here. They provided us with a bottle of water, and made sure to come by to replenish it once we drank it all. We even ended up ordering a flatbread, and it was delicious! Came on a week night to avoid crowds and to try something new. When I arrived it wasn't crowded and there is plenty of parking in the shared spaces all around the building. They offer indoor and outdoor seating with heating laps if your outside. It's a nice cozy spot near small shops, a library,etc. I was greeted immediately upon entering. I had a reservation, but you don't need it. When you come in you can sit wherever you desire or a spot that's available. We didn't have one dedicated waiter, but several people coming around to do different things. No one shared their name with us. Despite the state mask mandate one employee had on a mask. They have wine tasting on Tuesday and Thursday so my friend and I gave it a try. They change the selection regularly we were told. The wine tasting is right up my alley. The wine enthusiast was super excited about the wine he was selling. He seemed knowledgeable, but a bit out of it. The quesadilla I ordered was burnt on the inside and the cook just flipped it over and still served it as if I wouldn't taste it and it wouldn't impact the texture or flavors. No one checked on us while we are, maybe because their was no assigned waiter. The crowd picked up prior to my departure and getting someone to pick up the check or give you the check was a task. I don't know if I will return. It was a nice spot and a great staple to the community, but there was nothing great that stood out or that made it special. read more

This week was my first time finding this gem! I met an old friend for an early dinner and sat at the bar. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about wine. We were guided to a Pinot Grigio that was delicious and a fair price. The owner I believe was able to point us towards a specific region of wine and differentiate the flavors for us to decide! For dinner had the smoked salmon salad and it was something I've tried to recreate at home, it was so flavorful. I will definitely be back! read more

On a Saturday, scrolling through Yelp in hopes of finding a great lunch spot, I stumbled upon Black Chicken. Our party of three made the trip and were very pleased. This shop is set back from the road in downtown Matthews -- I think it's in the old Subway spot. The vibe is great with big windows and bright hardwood floors. We each ordered a sandwich, grabbed some sodas from the coolers, and shared a bag of chips. I was pleased to see that the sandwich menu offers gluten free bread, and for my order, it was toasted. If you're local to Charlotte, you might recognize Black Chicken as almost a grown-up, fancier version of Common Market. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly and helpful and seemed to enjoy being there. We weren't there to drink, but there was a decent variety of beer and an extensive wine area. I wish the crew at Black Chicken the best of luck -- we will be back, for sure. read more
