Located in the Promenade on Providence shopping center, Arooji's Wine Room and Ristorante has been serving Tuscan-inspired cuisine for over 22 years, making it a long-standing spot in Ballantyne's dining scene. With murals throughout the dining space, the ambiance leans into a rustic, old-world charm that complements their Italian menu. I stopped by for lunch on a Sunday when only the lunch menu was available, which mainly featured soups, salads, sandwiches, and pastas. One thing to note is that their pastas are not made in-house. Fresh bread with oil and balsamic vinegar is served, a nice touch before the meal. When trying a new Italian restaurant, eggplant parmigiana is usually my go-to. While the lunch menu only had it in sub form, my waiter, Joel, who was great and checked in at appropriate times, was able to accommodate me with a lunch-sized portion of the dinner eggplant parmigiana plate with spaghetti. The red sauce leaned more acidic than sweet, which some may prefer, but the eggplant itself was roasted and baked rather than fried, resulting in a mushy texture. It was difficult to distinguish where the eggplant ended and the sauce began. I also didn't see any mozzarella on top, just a light sprinkle of Parmesan. I know some Italians prefer it that way, but I wasn't sure if that was intentional or just an oversight. The best way to describe this dish would be a roasted eggplant caponata without the capers and olives served over spaghetti. The spaghetti itself was cooked correctly, and there was plenty of sauce to coat the pasta. But overall, this style of eggplant parmigiana wasn't my preference. One unexpected observation was the men's restroom setup, which was a bit puzzling. There were two toilets, but one was out in the open instead of enclosed in a stall. Not sure about the logistics there. Since Arooji's is a bit of a drive for me, I would need some convincing to return. Nothing was bad, but it wasn't my ideal style of Italian food. That said, I was told their lasagna and house-made meatballs, which are only available at dinner, are worth trying. If I do come back, that's what I'll be ordering. read more

We popped in last night to check out the place. It was completely dead, with the exception of a small group in the back section of the restaurant. The staff was very kind and attentive (up until the end when they sat behind us talking loudly about putting bets of football). And the food was meh. We got the meatballs (the sauce was extremely watery and lacked flavor), crab cakes (decent amount of crab, but very greasy and bland), rigatoni bolognese (fine, but again pretty bland), and the fillet (the mushroom sauce tastes like fake coconut & who puts spinach in mashed potatoes?) BUT my biggest complaint of all--the wine! The first wine I asked for was not available so I picked the Malbec. They charged $55 for a effing $8 bottle of ALDI wine!!! We didn't really enjoy it & now, after looking it up at home, I know why. What an absolute rip off and SCAM! We definitely will not go back and I will be sure to let others know of their little SCAM as well. read more

This is a nice small restaurant with friendly staff. I attended a group dinner with 35 people. So it was extremely noisy and crowded. Bread and white beans in olive oil on the table. I ordered my go to Italien favorites, Italien meatballs and caprese salad. My dining mate ordered eggplant parmesan and some others ordered mostly pasta entrees at our long table.. I have to say my meatball appetizer was a huge disappointment. The meatballs were dry and hard abd tasteless and I had to slice them with a knife not a fork. My caprese salad was tasty and nothing exceptional. My dining mate shared his eggplant parmesan with me which was good. Others diners liked what they ordered when I asked them and some thought food was mediocre. Food was plated nicely and came out hot. Menu a bit pricey in my opinion. Returned with another couple for dinner. Arooji's was back to excellence, food and service. We stayed for 2.5 hours talking, eating and drinking. A great evening. Angel G. did a great job keeping us happy without being obtrusive. Prices have been going up all over due to inflation. Wines by the glass were $13 each. The pollo piccata was $29, the ravioli special was $32, penne alla vodka was $22. Appetizers were under $20. Atmosphere is comfy and warm. Restaurant has been around for a long time and has never disappointed. The staff is fantastic and knowledgeable.

Firstly, we made reservations weeks in advance for a family gathering of 12 people, which was easy enough. Secondly, we were seated in an area which the wait staff could not access the other side of the table, which led to a lot of passing down and up of plates, hot dishes, soup, silverware and what have you. The waiter was quite rude and didn't seem happy that we had such a large party. I ordered the risotto. And let me tell you, as a risotto lover, that was definitely instant rice. To their credit, the amount of shrimp was sumptuous. Pretty much everyone in our party was disappointed and as locals, we will not return. PS: it really shouldn't take 30 plus minutes to have separate checks, especially when we prefaced that before our order, indicating which party was with whom. Lastly, the men's bathroom is a fire hazard. There are electric cords for lamps running directly under the sink and on top of my knees when I used the sink (I'm 5'10 for reference.) My husband and I have always enjoyed Aroojis, and we recently decided to see how well this restaurant does take-out. We used the online menu, called it in, and we had an easy pickup with a well-packed, warm, plentiful meal, enough for leftovers. While one my date the staff seated other groups around us, even though 90% of the restaurant was empty. These were loud, vulgar people who completely ruined the evening. Never the less our server was very pleasant. Didn't order any appetizers because we got complimentary bread with a small plate of olive oil with balsamic vinegar and white beans. So good. Ordered the ravioli mare for the entree- very flavorful and rich. $29 is a bit pricey when you only get 5/6 pieces. Overall a decent place but it was lacking atmosphere. We visited this restaurant for the first time tonight because we had a Restaurant.com certificate. Thought we'd give it a try since we love wine and we love good Italian. We were told after arrival from our waiter in consultation with the owner that they no longer accept Restaurant.com certificates. A little disappointed- BUT they did what they could to make it right. Now onto the food. We started with Caesar salads and then decided on the pasta Vodka and the Bolognese. Let me just say- the flavors took me straight back to our vacation in Umbria, Italy. The quality, richness and flavors were on par with the best food we had in Italy. Hats off to the chefs. We found our new favorite Italian place. The food and restaurant were excellent. The service, however, is not so great. The place was not busy at all when we went (Saturday night) at around 7:30. All we did was order drinks and entrees - no appetizers. We were there over 2 hours and rarely saw the waiter until he brought the food. Most waiters will at least mention their menu - not this guy. I suppose it was because we were there after 9, when they close. Even when we told him we wanted the bill, it was another 15 minutes before he appeared with it. It won't keep me from coming back (it was my first time), but it does keep me from giving it 5 stars. Today's lunch gab session with my friend Joe was in one of the most charming and idyllic spaces in Charlotte. It's tucked in a shopping center and almost unnoticeable. Has the feeling of an Italian wine bar, yet the menu is robust enough for a great meal. I had the chicken kabob. It came with mixed veggies and the most delicious rice ever. The rice had dill in it and was a combo that I never would have considered on my own. Loved the jazzy and soft background music and the classy vibe. Oh, there are architectural details here that are so visually interesting for a restaurant. Check out the arches and the side dining spaces. I was shocked that there were not more people here for lunch. We were told that the dinner crowd is much more pronounced. That means I will be inclined to keep coming back for lunch.
