I'll preface this review with the fact that our original plans (the day before a holiday) had to pivot since the original place we had chosen was closed - Always hard to make plans when a holiday falls on a Saturday!! Friday afternoon - peak lunch hour, this place is tucked away a bit, but when we came in the doors, every table was occupied (except 1).... Which worked out for us. Menu and photos of the dishes online looked entreaging and I am so glad we tried this place. Staffers were quick to seat us (at the last table available), but very quickly you can tell how fast/efficent the service was here and the number of customers they crank through. No noodles this time, but I will definitely be going back if I find myself in the Matthews area for whatever reason. Eggplant w/Garlic Sauce is definitely a must try and their mongolian beef was tasty. Both dishes came with rice (and we shared). Intreagued to try the rest of the menu!! read more

The noodles had great texture since they were fresh but everything here was lacking in flavor. I don't know if it was toned down because this was NC or if the restaurant itself just didn't know how to make good Chinese food? I'm inclined to believe this was intentional and that they know what they're doing. The cucumbers were not good at all. The skin was tough and the texture of the cucumbers were rubbery rather that crisp and snappy. The dish itself lacked balance and was very heavy on the vinegar. It's important to note that the fried tofu add-on was excellent. They used soft tofu and it was fried to perfection. The service was standard. The food was brought out quickly. I don't know what I was expecting coming from the Bay Area. I think this place "works" but if you've got a real hankering for good Chinese food, this is not for you. (To echo what Evan Z. wrote. My view of this restaurant represents what I think about most Chinese restaurants in the Charlotte area - they're solid, but for a city as big as Charlotte, it could do a lot better. The noodles here are freshly made (you can actually see them being made at the front!), the broth is clean, and the meat is tender. But that's kind of it, nothing really stood out to me flavor wise that makes me really want to go here. I'm not sure what it is but their soup dishes are missing some sort of special factor that would potentially push this restaurant into the 'great' category of restaurants. The stir fry noodles were pretty average, the flavor was all sauce and msg and the noodles weren't cooked great. Lanzhou was a pleasant experience for the family. It's a small spot with a strong small local business feel. The food was out quickly and very authentic. I recently ate here with a group of friends and had just an OK experience. The food was decent (I ordered the Beef ChaoMian), but the service left a lot to be desired. From the beginning, the meal felt rushed. Shortly after I sat down, our waitress asked for my food and drink order before I'd had much chance to look at the menu. The service felt very businesslike and cold. To be fair, I could have asked for more time, but I felt pressured to order. Thankfully, I did enjoy my meal overall. The most disappointing part of the meal came at the end, however. While I was boxing up my leftovers, the waitress took the fork out of my hand and removed my plate before I had finished, without asking if I was done. There wasn't much food left on the plate, but I wasn't finished packing it up. I was caught off guard and didn't say anything at the time, but looking back, I found it rude and wish I had told her I wasn't done. Also, the restaurant automatically added a gratuity to each person's bill. Had the tip not been automatically included, I would have left a lower total based on the level of service I received. On top of all that, the restaurant was very warm, and it didn't seem like the A/C was working. A large fan was blowing on part of our table, but it didn't provide much relief where I was sitting. Overall, the food was good, but the rushed service and uncomfortable dining environment made for a disappointing experience. Yes, I went to a hand pulled noodles restaurant, and I fell in love with their FRIED RICE. I wish I captured a photo of my husbands chicken fried rice- I only got it packaged in a to-go box! it was genuinely one of the best unassuming plates of food I've eaten. There is a perfect balance of sugar and salt, and umami- and the OGs know how important sugar is in savory Chinese cooking. One of the best bang for your buck places in the Mathews area. Amazing Chinese food, especially the noodles with prompt service and a very chill vibe. It took me way too long to finally check this place out, but now I'll be back often. With many of the dishes around $15 or so this legit Chinese spot isn't really much more priced than your average hoke in the wall spots these days. And is definitely cheaper than Lam's Kitchen (still worth going there too though). When you walk in the door you are quickly seated and asked what to drink. The place smells fantastic and everybody there looks to be enjoying their meals. Food comes out pretty quick too. The pulled noodles have a fantastic consistency that you just can't get out of pre made noddles. The sauces are all super tasty although they could be a little more spicy. The chili oil at the table takes care of that though. I just wish they sold booze so I could wash it all down with some sake. read more

Wow I'm so happy that this is the newest addition to the Asian food scene in Matthews! I got the spicy beef noodle soup and the beef was sooo tender. There were plenty of noodles and the texture of the noodles were to die for! They were super chewy and the noodles were very very long. I thought the portion was very generous, as some places tend to skimp out on the fillings and have a lot of broth, but not here! Give this dish a try, it was so filling and delicious. If you're not feeling the spice, you can get the non-spicy kind. I am typically reluctant to try dumplings when I'm out, but a friend recommended me to try them and I was not disappointed! I believe they were pork and chives dumplings. We got them pan fried and they were the juiciest and plumpest dumplings ever! They serve it with a delicious vinegar sauce and tip, use the chili oil on the table to add some spice. Interior is very clean. Service was very quick and efficient. We enjoyed getting to see the chef make the noodles fresh while we were there! I can't wait to return to try other dishes. Great hand pulled noodles place. The noodles are chewy and bouncy. We ordered the braised beef noodles soup, the Shanxi shaved noodles and the egg roll. The braised beef noodles have good beefy flavor and the beef are very tender. The shaved noodles have good flavor and is very similar to chow fun. I just wish there are more meat and vegetables. The egg roll was just ok, contain mostly vegetables and there were barely any pork in it. But overall a great value at $14.99 per entree and food are very good. read more

Lanzhou Hand-Pulled Noodles in Matthews is the kind of place that doesn't care about social media trends or clever slogans. They just want to feed you carbs. Good ones. Like, stretched-from-a-hunk-of-dough-right-in-front-of-you carbs. High ceilings, bright natural light, and giant silver tubes dangling from the ceiling like robot snorkels. Apparently they're for air conditioning...which is cute, because it was still warm inside. But hey, effort counts. You can watch the guy in the open kitchen stretch noodles by hand like he's doing dough yoga. No machines, no shortcuts. Just flour, water, and serious arm strength. I watched him for a full minute before realizing I hadn't blinked. He didn't even look up once. He was in the zone, like a noodle monk. We shared a few things to start. The steamed pork dumplings were clearly homemade with a solid meat-to-dough ratio. None of that sticky, goopy skin nonsense. Just chewy, well-folded little pockets that soaked up soy sauce like pros. The smashed cucumbers were cool, crisp, and a solid reset between bites. No spice unless you dunk them in the chili oil sitting on every table like it's waiting for a dare. The cheese wontons were fried to a deep golden crunch and shaped like little origami hats. Cute, crispy, and decent. I wouldn't have minded a little more cheese in the middle, but I still ate more than my fair share. I ordered the chicken Chaomian, which was loaded with chewy hand-pulled noodles, lightly crispy chicken, cabbage, and scallions. It had that perfect wok-seared taste without feeling greasy. One of my friends got the beef Chaomian, and after a bite swap, I liked his more. He liked mine more. So next time, I'm getting the beef. Our third friend went for the braised beef noodle soup and said the beef was tender and melt-in-your-mouth good. I didn't try it, but I trust the man. And then there was the egg roll. I know it's just an egg roll, but this one deserves its own paragraph. It was crispy perfection, golden brown with those little bubble blisters on the wrapper that let you know it was fried just right. Easily one of the top egg rolls I've had in Charlotte. Everything was made in-house and it shows. The flavors are clean, nothing's too salty or too greasy. It's comforting, straightforward, and seriously well done. Best pan fried pork dumplings - didn't even need sauce. Had orange chicken - super crispy and sauce actually had some crisp orange peels in it which no one ever does. Best. Chinese. In. Charlotte! Coming here since it first opened and it never disappointed. Their chili oil noodle dishes start as a ball of dough upon order, we see the chef hand streching it until it becomes a noodle. Make sure you ask for since it's really one long, long noodle stretched from the ball of dough:) The eggplants are cooked and seasoned to perftion, we get ours with extra garlic. And actually one of our favorite dishes is the shrimp hot pot with (I've never had it in a Chinese before) the best freshly made potato chips!!!! Yes you read that right! Imagine. Shrimp (best shrimp in town, I kid you not) with potato chips, hot sauce ,some cabbage, and seasoning. Our other favorite dish is the hot fish soup with pickled cabbage, the only way I eat pickled cabbage because, we'll, you'll have to taste it to believe how good it is!
