I've been to just about every Que Onda location around Charlotte, but finally remembered to take photos at the Matthews spot tonight. As a California-born taco lover, I'm almost embarrassed to admit how incredible the tacos are here... because I've eaten at just about every hole-in-the-wall from Tijuana and all up and down the East Coast. I know good tacos, and this place absolutely deserves its flowers. Every single taco was phenomenal, but the steak is out of this world. The flavors are bold, the textures are on point, and the tortillas hold everything together without falling apart, which is a bigger deal than people realize. If you appreciate real tacos and not just "taco-adjacent" food, Que Onda is well worth checking out. read more

Small in size but packs a huge punch. Came for Happy Hour and left satiated and satiated. My tacos were so flavorful. The chicken was doused in Sazon! They also had a good amount of protein too. The salsa is different. Its smokey and dry which wasn't a favorite of mine but their house made Avocado Verde or Habinero Pineapple salsa is great. Very hot but good flavor. I would go back to this restaurant again, but would try a different location. Just moved here 2 months ago from San Diego and was excited to try what appeared to be decent looking Mexican food. My friend arrived before me and said despite the place being empty, the service was slow and it took a while for a hostess to make eye contact to seat her. I had been super excited about the sorbet margaritas. I triple checked the website menu which states this location DOES have them. The waitress informed us this was the only location that does not have them (which I later saw on social media), however the website menu specifies "sorbet margaritas" at the Matthews location. Our food was good. We enjoyed what we ordered. I had been also looking forward to the Oaxacan churros, but our waitress didn't know what they were and asked "you mean just the regular Bavarian churros?". The churros arrived with two thin dipping sauces, definitely not dulce de leche or cream dips, just two very soupy ones, but flavor was fine. This location is just in a shopping center next to a grocery store so it's not really "restaurant vibes" and isn't given the same attention or detail or menu highlights or features as the other locations, so I wouldn't go back. But I made the drive especially for those items so I do want to go back and try them as I had been looking forward to it since moving here. read more

We had to post about this place. We were visiting Mathews City on our Saturday and spotted this place. It's unique and open concept with a bar in the front and sitting area on the side. It gives a hip and modern feel to the restaurant. We were greeted with a welcome in and later a stop by I believe the owner. Friendly staff and courteous waitresses. We ordered Chilaquiles and Tacos de huevo con tocino from the brunch menu. The food was delicious really. We ate that with some margaritas. They offered a four on a stacked. We loved them too. We enjoy coming here for Mexican. Service is always fast and it's very clean everywhere. The negative is chips and salsa aren't complimentary. It is offered as an appetizer option and it's appropriately $2.50ish. Our favorite thing to order are the tacos. We have tried other dishes and haven't been impressed. For example, the skillet nachos came out dry. The queso is put on skillet first and then everything else. When we got them, the queso was basically cooked off so we were served chips with chicken and sour cream. I asked for queso sauce and explained why. They brought out a ketchup sized cup of queso. Queonda is one of my favorite Mexican local spots in Matthews/Charlotte area. The staff is very accommodating and kind. The food is very tasty, parking is free and their establishment is always clean. I'm a vegetarian and they always accommodate my needs. My favorite thing to eat in their menu are the empanadas. This is one of four locations right in mist of the town of Matthews across the road from Brace YMCA and Publix. Stopped in for a bite of lunch 12:45ish. Nice quaint atmosphere. Noticed from the signage outside they have daily specials to choose from. Today's (Wednesday) specials were $5 small Nachos and $5 Mojitos. We were greeted upon entering and seated quickly since there wasn't much of a crowd. I feel seating layout could be a bit better. Some would consider the tables uncomfortable for two especially once you add food and drinks. The menu has plenty to choose from. Our waitress was soft spoken sweet and helpful. Complimentary warm chips and authentic salsa were served. Something so simple yet so tasty. Ordered Chicken Fajitas and Guajillo Chicken. The fajitas came with salad, refried beans, and Mexican rice. The star of the show was the guajillo chicken entree. Grilled chicken breast smothered in red cheese sauce topped with bacon crumbles. The sides of cheesy rice and fried plantains help showcase the dish. Everything was delicious. Washed all of this down with a couple of their Wednesday special $5 Mojitos. read more

I've loved the Chicken Tinga, Mex Rice, Refried Beans, and Queso Dip burrito for years, but lately it's been disappointing--weird texture, dry, bland chicken, barely any beans or rice, and a thick tortilla that makes up most of the burrito. We have been Que Onda customers for years, since they were in the larger location at the end of the Plantation Market plaza. We used to love their food, fresh table side guacamole and margaritas. They have gone so far downhill in the last couple of years, I think tonight was our last try. The food is overpriced and not of anything to be considered quality. The servers seem to turn over awfully regularly and we never see the same one twice and the longtime bartender hasn't been there the last few times we've gone so I'm guessing he too is gone. I love this place! So let me start by saying that the service is not overly friendly but no complaints either. Stopped for brunch on a Sunday and ordered the breakfast tacos which were excellent! Filled with roasted squash, zucchini, chorizo and eggs, in soft corn tortillas were amazing. Price for brunch are awesome as well. The person "greeting" us got up from a table where he was eating, confirmed the number of our party from 50 feet away instead of walking all the way to where we were standing at the door, and then dropped off the menus at a table and walked away. A server brought us chips and salsa. The salsa tasted like runny tomato sauce and it had no spice to it at all. I decided to order tacos and wanted to try a variety. The presentation of my plate looked like they could absolutely care less and the taste of the food matched this presentation. The carnitas were VERY salty and inedible and I wasn't impressed by the other tacos either. I ended up eating just a few bites and I lost my appetite after that. My boyfriend noticed that the cheese on my refried beans seemed on and we came to realize that it resembled Parmesan. Definitely out of place for a Mexican restaurant. The server was what appeared to be attentive. She took our order and I ordered chimichanga rice and beans. She asked did I want the veggies in it. I said clearly no. We had not been to Que Onda in awhile. First thing I noticed was the staff. Didn't recognize any of the staff. New manager, new bartender. Our tacos were very good, very well filled. Came back a few weeks later and it was beyond awful. The fish tacos had one very small piece of fish and a tiny bit of cheese. The other 2 tacos were made totally different. The birria tacos were so greasy and messy. Also had a grilled shrimp taco, no longer had the pineapple in them. Just had a messy cole slaw over them. Don't think we will be back. read more

This evening (9/27/20) my son suggested Que Onda to cure his craving for Mexican food. Definitely was a good choice. Que Onda has 3 locations. Although we live close to uptown where they have a location on W. Trade street we opted to go to the Matthew's location. Other than working in an office uptown I don't bother visiting after work hours due to having to pay for parking and most of the restaurants don't offer valet or validated parking.. When we arrived most of the people were sitting outside in front of the restaurant and after seeing how small the inside of this location is we opted to do the same. **Side note: empty space next door and this restaurant really needs to work out something with shopping center owner and expand. My son had some kind of taco for an appetizer said it was good. My buddy chose the burger for his entree (not sure why lol). Said the burger was big and good but them putting corn inside the burger is just weird. I ordered the chimichanga entree and asked for my rice and beans on the side. The chimi was good but they are very cheap with the rice and beans. Decided to order the red sangria it was good but adding a shot of mango and passionfruit made it even better. We ordered the churro desert. The churros were delicious but next time will ask them to put them on the side.....the ice cream was melted and was just a soupy mess that we could not enjoy with the churros. Service was good although the waitress did not know the menu well. When asking her about the margaritas she didn't know that they were listed on the paper menu. Strong margaritas started off our dinner the other night. That was a plus. The tacos I ordered, the fish tacos and shrimp tacos were tasty enough, but I couldn't help feeling there was some ingredient missing that would make them even better. Perhaps, it was the slaw on top that diminished the taste for me. It wasn't overpowering, but I don't like slaw at all. So if you don't mind it, or even love it, then you would enjoy it more than I did. It may be a personal taste thing. The refried beans and rice, I had no complaints with. The churros were warm, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth fun. They come with a scoop of vanilla ice cream as balance. read more

Went there for dinner on July 6, 2022, our first time. We should've walked out the door when we finally saw the health department score of 93.5, but we were already seated and gave it a try. Our waitress was ok but my food was the pits! I ordered a burrito with ground beef and was stunned to see about an 1/8" of an inch of ground beef at the very bottom, the rest was rice and a lot of it. For $11.95, I expected a lot more. I've never had rice inside of a burrito and it tasted just like a rice burrito, no real flavor. The tiny bit of meat on it was overcooked and crunchy. On my picture, I tried to scrape the ground beef together to separate it from all the rice. On the other hand, my husband ordered the Coca Cola carnitas and he said they were ok, nothing to write home about. We have no desire to return. read more

For sure we will be returning! We shared a plate and had appetizers and it filled us up. We really liked it! The location is mixed within a grocery store shopping center. Thus ample parking. It has outdoor seating but not conducive for wet and cold days/seasons. The facility itself is smaller but we got seated immediately. The prices were fair. Lastly the wait staff kept it going with top notch service. Don't fool theyself with "Tacos" name. It's more...way more than just that. read more
