Whipped potatoes
Tia I.

The food is just alright. Our waiter was great! Her really tried to make sure we were happy with our food. My husband's drink was not great all. They had to make it three times to get it right. I ordered the salmon dish with whipped potatoes and broccolini. The salmon was dry and I had to spit out the mash potatoes because I felt like I was eating a chunk of butter. He did replace it with a baked potato. My food had no taste at all. The ambiance is welcoming. For the price that we pay for food , there should be a head chef checking to make sure food is prepared and seasoned well!!!!

Spent Saturday evening downtown Matthews with a friend and decided to give Jekyll and Hyde a second chance. It's a cute restaurant with a patio and live music was playing the night I visited. We had a great waitress who was thoughtful and attentive. I ordered a plain burger and brussel sprouts. The burger was great this time around. The brussel sprouts were ok, more on the vinegar based side than I'm used too. Our waitress returned them and we got different sides. The broccolini was amazing. The fries were ok since some were not completely cooked. The burger in the photo doesn't look like much but it was 9 out 10 in my book.

We are members of a HOG chapter and we do a social every month. We chose Jekyll and Hyde because in the past they had really good Halloween decorations. This night a group of 11 went to the restaurant and there were no decorations at all. Very disappointed. Our severer was fantastic but the cooks dropped the ball. I asked for no onions on my prime rib sandwich and I got onions. Another in our party asked for their steak to be medium and came out well. Another got a filet and baked potato and it was cold and not done. The burgers that were ordered came out good. They did take the food off our bills. We have been several times and never had an issue. That's why we chose the restaurant. Just was a disappointment tonight.

This the third location we have tried out while visiting Charlotte. Probably my least favorite of the three. Don't get me wrong, the food was just as good as the others, which is excellent. 3 beers I tried to order off their list weren't really there, and in trying to be helpful the waitress "suggested" something else that was a completely different style and I let it happen, and wished I hadn't We were there at lunch on a Friday and it certainly wasn't crowded but service was a bit slow. Man I loved that Jack the Ripper burger though! And my wife's steak sandwich warmed up the next day great for leftovers.

Great time with our group of 6. I loved my Luck Of The Irish cocktail that bubbles up and released "smoke" (they make it with dry ice that is sectioned off at the bottom of the glass) - total wow factor! We also loved the large Bavarian pretzel with 2 dipping sauces - great for sharing! Everyone enjoyed their meals - mine was a steak and arugula salad and I added a piece of salmon for an additional $9 to get extra protein. The British steam punk decor is fun - like the pipe toilet paper holder and the wall of books leading to the bathroom. Service was perfect!

Friendly service. Enjoyed the ambiance (would make for a great Halloween dinner outing). I tried the blackberry bramble drink and it tasted a bit more tart than I liked. Our server offered to add some simple syrup which I appreciated. I also had the Reuben. It was good, though I wish the bread stayed more toasty - the heat/moisture sort of made the bread damp. Overall, a bit pricier than I would hope for but would return again.

After randomly running into a old friend from a decade ago, we decided to meet for dinner. I was a first timer here. She'd been a few times before and had great experiences. The restaurant is cozy and offers classic comfort food. The restaurant itself is adorned with rustic-ish decor, creating a warm and inviting ambiance that adds to the overall dining experience. I ordered the delicious Shepherd's Pie and my friend had the Fish and Chips. Now I'm certain that this place is a local go-to spot for a hearty and satisfying meal. We started with an appetizer. The candied bacon. Four large and very thick pieces of bacon. A tad salty for my taste, but also deliciously sweet. I see how it could be a fan fave, but I stopped after one piece while my friend enjoyed the rest. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie. This dish is the epitome of comfort. It'll warm your soul. The serving is huge. The picture does it no justice. You'll be stuffed if you can manage to eat the whole thing. The meat and potatoes in the Shepherd's Pie was already too much, and I still asked for a side of bread. I'm human. Our waiter, Cameron, gave me a toasted bun which was perfect. Moving on to the Fish and Chips, while it may not steal the spotlight like the Shepherd's Pie, it still held its own. My friend finished her dish and said it was fantastic. I also tried the Heated Affair. The drink itself was amazing. It would have been absolute perfection for me if the glass were filled a tad bit more to make it a standard serving size, and if it had a sugar rim. All in all, the delish food and our excellent server made us have a wonderful experience.

I just wanted something to snack on so despite the large menu, I chose to get a guava and cheese empanada. The flavor was good but it wasn't worth the price tag (almost $5). I tried to order a nitro cold brew but was told they were out, and had been for years.....so I ordered an iced cafe con leche. I had to ask for it 3 times because the cashier didn't seem to know what is was, despite being on the menu hanging above her head. Her co-worker had to show her which button to hit on the POS. I'm sorry to say that this was the worst coffee I've ever had. No flavor at all. It tasted like watered down milk. They should probably fix their menu because calling that a cafe con leche was completely misleading. Overall, a very unpleasant experience.

My husband and I both ordered the Old School Plate. The potatoes were well seasoned and perfectly crispy. The chicken sausage I had was delicious and expertly prepared--juicy on the inside and crisp on the outside. But OMG the pancakes!! They offer a self-serve bar of delicious flavored butters and jams. I had never tried sweet potato butter, but the combination of it and syrup set off the big, fluffy cakes perfectly. I'm so full and happy that we tried this place out!!

Biscuits and gravy are a southern staple and rarely have I had any that were really good, except here at Vicious Biscuit. Biscuits are their business. The most important elements are the biscuits and the gravy. Additions are many and varied, but if the basic two items are not both excellent, you will have a disappointing experience. The Vicious biscuit is the size of a hamburger bun. It is soft and there are bits of spice in the dough. These biscuits do not fall apart, but stay together and serve to soak up the wonderful sausage gravy that is poured on top of it. You can order just a biscuit with gravy for $8. And if you are timid, start here. Otherwise, there are add-ons like very good fried chicken, shrimp and grits, ham, pulled smoked pork, crab, bacon, fried shrimp. fried eggs and other combos. Super choices, so take time to study the menu which is extensive. Portions are great, very generous. I had their Vicious ($12). It was their Cheddar jalapeño biscuit, crispy fried chicken, maple sausage gravy, cowboy candy, with maple syrup drizzle. I was hesitant as to the maple syrup, but it is just enough to give accent to the gravy, but not super sweet. Wife had Fried Green 'Maters ($9.50) which were four fried green tomatoes, their signature pimento cheese with a pickled okra garnish. She could not eat it all, so I helped finish off the lone tomato and a bit of the cheese. Very good. Vicious Biscuit is more that a meal, it is an experience, even a journey, through this traditional southern staple, biscuits and gravy. Enjoy the trip. We might see you there.

Her attentive service never missed a beat, and the experience was so delightful that I made a point of sharing my compliments with the manager on duty before we left. The coffee was exactly the kind that feels like home, familiar, comforting, and somehow better because it arrived with such great service. Then came the waffle , which was both delicious and notably HUGE, the kind of breakfast that makes you wonder why you ever order anything else. They serve lunch and dinner, too--and that dinner menu was talking to me! When I try a restaurant for the first time, I usually start with something simple. It is a little like dating the restaurant: before I commit to the whole menu, let me see how you handle the basics. If you can make simple food well, then I begin to trust you. I relax. I get curious. Then, before you know it, I'm falling in love and planning our next date! Fresh Chef made a very good first impression. The eggs were fluffy and cooked to perfection. The sourdough toast was toasted just right, with a beautifully balanced flavor that didn't overpower the rest of the plate. But those breakfast potatoes? Baby, they were the star! Crispy and golden on the outside, tender enough to melt in your mouth on the inside. I added onions and bell peppers, and next time I'll ask for extra because they belonged together. Let those onions and peppers come on out and join the party! The bacon was a good-quality cut--not thin, cheap, or pretending to be pork. As a genuine pork lover, I appreciate that. The coffee was good, too. My waiter was exceptional. I didn't catch the young man's name, but he made sure I had everything I needed while still giving me room to enjoy my breakfast. He was warm, attentive, and perfectly timed without hovering. That kind of service deserves to be recognized. Then I noticed the manager wearing a shirt from my favorite team. Well, that certainly didn't hurt the courtship! Roll Tide! Fresh Chef and I have had our first date, and I must say--it went very well. Now I need to return for dinner and see whether this little breakfast flirtation turns into a full-blown love affair. With a menu featuring steaks, seafood, pasta, ribs, shrimp and grits, and more, I am hopeful that this relationship has a future! Auntie D's rating: Five out of five forks!
