Back in the area, I visited Miki's. There was no one in the restaurant on this Monday afternoon. I ordered crab cakes from the special menu. For my sides, I ordered yams and stewed apples because I don't get to have these comfort foods often enough. My order was to go. I ate as soon as I arrived home. Let me tell you, the food warmed my soul. The crab cakes could have been crisped on the outside, but they were outstanding and well-flavored--the yams, ah, divine. The outside of the business does not do it justice. We stumbled upon Mickey's one day while looking for something else, and it was one of the best hidden gems imaginable. My friends and I go at least once a week. The food is amazing. I always get the chicken fried chicken with macaroni and cheese. They have the best macaroni and cheese I've had since my grandma used to make it. In fact I have bought an entire pan to bring to holiday gatherings and it's always a big hit. The owner is incredibly friendly and speaks to most of the patrons as they enter the restaurant. I highly suggest getting to know him, he has lots of very interesting stories. I came here with my friend Jenny Massad for breakfast Sunday morning a week before Christmas. I enjoyed PERFECT over-medium eggs with my crispy bacon while Jenny had savory country ham alongside her fluffy omelette. THE COFFEE WAS EXCELLENT! I understand lunch is pretty good too, especially the chicken tenders. From what I see, it looks like a great spot to grab a meat and two veg kind of deal. Well, this was a surprise! I'm from Charlotte but no longer live in the South. I'm in a Southern-adjacent region that likes to claim "Southern-inspired" food on the menus of many restaurants, but they always get the most important thing wrong: there are no veggies anywhere in sight. Putting shrimp and grits on the menu does not a Southern restaurant make. Anyway, I'm digressing... I'm in town to visit family and bemoaned the lack of access to good Southern-style veggies in my current region, so my family had a "hold my beer" moment and brought me to Miki's. We had the chicken-fried chicken with white gravy, and as many veggies as I could shovel down my gullet. The chicken-fried chicken was perfectly fried and moist; the white gravy was exactly what you'd expect; the black-eyed peas, cabbage, and greens were cooked through and seasoned well; the stewed apples, stewed okra and tomatoes, and mashed potatoes and gravy were on point; and the fried squash was piping hot and delicious. This isn't fancy food, there is no pretense; this is solid country-style cooking. The veggies were served in little plastic cafeteria bowls - a requirement as far as I'm concerned - and the service was quick and friendly. Count me in for a trip to Miki's every time I'm back in town. read more

Niki's is great for what I would call home cooked meals. I've had 4 different meals there and loved each one.

We discovered this family-run comfort eats joint late Saturday morning purely by chance, finding a long line at Breuggers. What a nice find! Although too late for breakfast, our lunch was superb starting with the homemade piping hot macaroni and cheese. The corn beef and cabbage was delicious, with thinly sliced lean meat and perfectly steamed cabbage. The country style steak was tender and tasty as were the other sides lima beans, green beans and collards. Yeast rolls or corn bread rounds things out but were just okay. The lack of real butter was disappointing. Service was friendly and attentive. The dining room is simply decorated but roomy and comfortable. Sanitation rating was an impressive 97.5. It appeared that, on this day anyway, most of its workers were family members starting with the involved owner who roamed from table to table, checking on customers. Those that enjoy simple Greek-esque diners that serve up fresh comfort food in large quantities will appreciated this place. read more

1st time trying Mikkis Found it after we were told of a 30 minute wait at Metro. Walked in and seated immediately. Prices were great, service was excellent and fast. Ordered a Hamburger breakfast and the portions were large, a rarity these days. I recommend everyone try this unknown gem. read more

Wow! This is a hidden gem and it is worth finding! Simple atmosphere, darn right plain. But, the food was anything but plain! I enjoyed the baked flounder, Mac and cheese, okra and tomatoes, and cornbread and honey. I loved the fact that the Mac and cheese was steaming HOT! Rarely is any dish served this hot. The food was at Best was functional. Appearances not very inviting. Meat on plate top with a mix of gravy and onions that looked sort of fake. Hard to explain. It was tasty. The frys were hot but they also had just been reheated. Disappointed. The greens were pretty good. And the muffin was popped into the microwave and was ok. Service was nothing special. Not a good first impression. We wanted brunch, but we're only given the lunch menu and were told "that's all there is". We had a hard time deciding.
