Amazing atmosphere! This place is so cute! Loved it from the moment we walked up. I have a food allergy and when I ordered I asked if one of the ingredients was this specific item I am allergic to(onions). The server said yes it was but not only was it in this dish but almost all of their dishes. The owner came to our table and came up with a recipe that would eliminate onions from the dish!!!! I ate at La Cocina's cantina for the first time a few weeks ago during a Tequila Party (a response to the Tea Party) event. While drums and traditional dancing aren't really my thing, the food, drinks, and atmosphere more than made up for it. We started with the crostini with sliced fruit and cheese and the goat cheese flan. Both were amazing. Next, I had a cheeseburger, which was cooked perfectly and made from excellent Double Check Ranch beef. My wife had the sweet potato and corn enchiladas, which were a little too heavy in cilantro for her taste, but still pretty good. Tequila and beer flowed freely throughout. This place was really surprising to me because the food was really good. I had the chicken burrito with green chile sauce and it was one of the best green chile sauces I have had! The spice level just right and everything tasted great. I also had the ginger lemon hot tea and it was one of the best teas I have had in a long time. Hard to find at night the front of the place has a different name Pub Something, dining is outside and around back - we had a wait and a stiff hostess and waitress, drinks were $$ so I had water - my taco salad was divine! We found this place purely based on the review on Yelp. We were looking for a local restaurant somewhere downtown to eat lunch. As we looked for parking, we were a bit skeptical because there is little to see from the street. We then walked into the courtyard where we were able to find a seat very quickly. The entire area is shaded by a large tree right in the center. Service was great and our food was delicious. Our waiter did a great job checking on us from time to time. Went with my hubby to enjoy their happy hour. They are an outside restaurant and the staff was very accommodating for our dog. They even brought him his own water dish! We caught the last few mins of their happy hour and enjoyed their signature margaritas at a dollar off! I will 100% recommend their veggie burger; it was amazing! Their chimichanga with the brisket was I was told was "soooo good". After we enjoyed their michelada which is delicious! Our server, Tara, was very kind and offered lots of great advice on the menu! What this place has going for it, hands down, is the atmosphere. The courtyard area with sail cloth strung between the giant central tree and the buildings adds much-needed shade and the little lights everywhere add to the charming ambiance. I had a gin and tonic to start, and it was pretty average - nothing too special here. The menu had many appealing options, however because I wasn't incredibly hungry, I went with the cheese plate. What drew me to this were the words 'goat cheese' and 'homemade crackers.' The plate also contained apple slices, mixed nuts (just plain nuts), a citrus marmalade, some roasted red peppers, and strips of manchego cheese. Overall, it was underwhelming. The presentation was awkward because they tried to stand up the cracker in the goat cheese (and it was a huge lavash-esque cracker - it was falling over by the time the server brought it) and the manchego had the texture of cheese that has been cut for a while and left out - kind of rubbery on the outside. The whole plate seemed kind of thrown together (and maybe that's what they were going for) but I was left feeling like it deserved a little more effort. The cracker was very tasty, by the way - I did eat the whole thing with the goat cheese. There are bars around the perimeter of the courtyard and some neat little shops. Again, if you're looking for outdoor dining with some fun ambiance, this is your place. read more

Wandering near Old Town Tucson we came upon this gem for dinner. The night was uncommonly cool for spring, but the patio was well covered with propane tower heaters, providing a lusciously comfortable outdoor environment in an equally luscious space. The service was immediate, casual, but gracious, throughout the staff we encountered. The menu offered a broad variety of choices of usual Mexican fare with gourmet twists. The pulled pork sandwich with a red slaw on a soft, warm roll was tender and lightly smokey with a tangy barbecue sauce that didn't overwhelm the pork or crispy slaw. The delectable southwest pot roast was perfectly spiced with complex chili and other southwest flavors and included roasted green chilies with the vegetables. We ordered more chilies, they were so good! The margaritas were mulled freshly and the salt was coarse and complex as well. Dessert brought us the most delicious decaf coffee we've ever had, which paired beautifully with the fig-bourbon-salted caramel bread pudding. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Tucson. I love the patio space and all the little structures around it. It is kind of a oasis compound with the little shack for a bar and adjoining dusty monk bar and store/artisan spaces. Live music is common. The food is as good as the atmosphere. Certain things can be a little pricey Ex: I think nachos are like $9 but they are pretty big. I have had some moody service a couple times but for how often I go that track record is actually really good. I would definitely recommend La Cocina. read more

I love it! This was our first time here and I am so so sad it took 9 months. The fish tacos were ridiculously good, as was the eggplant lasagna that my wife had (although it couldn't touch the tacos!) Dishes are around $10 and are well made. They offer tofu in the dishes which is always nice. I had a nice margarita that was well worth the price. This place is beautiful in the evening, lights strung around all the trees, live music, Arizona weather - you can't beat it. I ordered a chile relleno plate, which came with a 'salad' of corn and other southwest veggies, very tasty. The relleno was cornmeal crusted which I didn't care for. My friend got the braised beef quesadilla and it was delicious, definitely what I will be getting next time. My only complaint about this place was the incredibly slow service, our waitress was pleasant but took her time in getting our order, checking in, dropping and picking up checks. Also when a food runner brought our meals and we asked for a side of sour cream his response was a drawn out "sure". The staff in general all seemed less then thrilled and that's a real bummer for me regardless of how good the food and ambiance is. I will surely try again another time, hoping for some helpful and happy staff! read more

Great concept. Went for a charity event for a good cause. Guatemala trip sponsored by St. Michaels and La Cocina. However we decided to take our 19 week old boxer along. Being advertised as a dog friendly place. I will say they are NOT! Called prior and a nice younger woman said sure bring him. We always have dogs. Asked at the front where we may sit and they said in patio bar area. Now this restaurant has the beach shack feel. All open air and definitely rustic. Some might find it historical. I call it vintage and that's the hole old town artisan lifestyle. Now the place is packed and tons of kids and people. This is the first time since our pooch got his final shots was he safe to start with public socialization. We are place at the far end of bar and the last table in the corner. We are there about 30 mins. No waitresses. No drinks. Nothing. They my puppy let's out a few "yelps". Pun intended. Not a cry not a bark just a quick noise since it's all so loud and new. The rude bartender not the nice young tattooed blond but the bar toad. Has a face like she just had to swallow vinegar to wake up no cheer at all. She bellows a very akward "whoever you are please ask your dog to stop crying immediately" that was like a direct order across the bar area. Now mind you. It was heard by not only the 5 in my party but also by alot of the patrons. We ended up leaving I got up and didn't make a scene. Now just a few feet from the bar shack my puppy is fine and happy to see every other patron. No noise. but literally if you say dog friendly be friendly. 5 or less quick noises from a puppy to me should be easy going when u have recycled old patio furniture and brick and dirt as your floor. Heck we usually spend 50 to 75 dollars when we go out so I guess they can afford to lose that. Especially when the restaurant business is filled with 200%markup margaritas and this town has plenty of 12 dollar tacos I can buy without a skag of a employee showing poor service, bad judgement to diffuse a situation, and maybe she needs to work not around crowds or events with a good cause filled with loving people. This was my first and last time to go to this place. Last time I checked. I went to a bar to relax and de-escalate stress. Not have a barfly hippie "bark" orders. The sad part was is my infant son of 20 months was starving and was making more baby noise and banging the rusted metal table louder than the room. I have a feeling this will fall on def ears. Tomales and taco salad was good, but the Thai noodle dish had hardly any noodles and they were a strange texture. Sat on the patio with our dog. Our server gave him some water. The seats aren't the most comfy, but felt like many-a cafe seating I have plunked my butt in across Mexico and Central America. Also: one bathroom stall is shared by a very many people, so there is always a line. No bueno. Two stars for the menu and food. I can appreciate trying to please everyone, but with a Spanish name, I wasn't expected to see such a random variety of food. The food itself we found to be ok, perhaps a bit bland. Negative stars for the wait. No exaggeration, after we waited an hour for a seat, we waited no less than an hour and 15 minutes for food to arrive after we ordered it. I'm not joking. And within that hour and 15 minutes, it took about 30 minutes to get the drinks we ordered (a beer and a soda). Our server was a sweetheart, and the place was busy, but something is wrong here if it takes this long to get drinks and chips. read more

I had the Chocolate Torte. It was a generous sized slice, and was very decadent and rich. I also ate some of the house fries and I loved the seasonings that were on them. There were many delicious sounding cocktails on the menu, my friends ordered the Ginger Lemon Drop and the Lavender Lemonade Vodka and loved them. I also liked that there were many gluten-free and vegetarian (usually tofu) options on the menu. Only downside was that it was a tad bit on the pricier side, but that can be expected for good natural food. It was not outrageously expensive, just expect to spend $15-20 if you get an appetizer, entree, and a beverage. I loved the atmosphere, we were seated outside in a courtyard with many trees and plants, decorated with string lights and candles. It was a cold night but they had outdoor heaters so we stayed nice and warm. It was also nice that there are many little shops surrounding the courtyard with local goods.
