JJ bakery has the best pineapple bun I've ever had! Soft, sweet, moist, and huge. At $1.50 it's a steal! It doesn't get better than this, folks. I also got the bacon pastry with grunion (green onion). Pass. It sounded and smelled so good fresh outta the oven, but sadly was a disappointment when I sank my teeth into it. This is one of my go-to places for cakes, pastries, and desserts. Same goes for my parents as well. It's located in the same plaza as the original Din Tai Fung in Arcadia, meaning small plaza parking lot with limited spots shared among businesses like JJ Bakery, Din Tai Fung, Phoenix Food Boutique, Tea Bar Starry, and some other professional non-food businesses. Usually the spots in front of JJ are those 20 minute parking spots, so they tend to free up after those who hop off to pick up their pastries are able to make it out from the sometimes long line inside to pay. What I like to get here: - The mango mousse long cut cake ($16). Rather than a traditional round cake, their long cut cakes (rectangular shape) look great and is easier to consume if you have a small family (or if it's just you! =p). I like the mango mousse since it's light and not too sweet. I've also tried the long cut versions of the chocolate chocolate cake, tiramisu, and green tea mousse and you can't go wrong there, but the mango is my favoured choice. - mochi ($2.85). Comes in 3 different flavors: mango, strawberry, and green tea (has red bean inside too!) It's not the kind of mochi you think of that you can get at a supermarket, with ice cream inside and enveloped by a skin of mochi. Or the Japanese kind where there's a filling of some sort (like red bean or something) with a skin of mochi. JJ makes their mochi with the mochi skin and inside includes a filling with a mixture of sponge cake and custard/fruit/cream. The mochi itself is pretty large too -- about the size of your palm. An order of 4 comes in a nice box. My parents really like their savory pastries (you know, the kind with ham or cheese or hot dog or tuna in it) and their sandwiches. I'm not too much of a fan of eating Chinese bread topped with cheese and hot dog, but to each their own. You can also call in an order to pick up later. I knew I wouldn't have a chance to pick up a cake and 4 orders of mochi in the morning, so I called and asked them to set some aside for me to pick up after work at 7 pm. I didn't want to risk the chance of the items being sold out before I was there (which was true for the cake and barely for the mochi). I think the phone call was facilitated by the fact that I spoke in Mandarin, as I noticed that the individual at the cash register struggled to understand I was here to pick up an order when I came in the evening. You can pay by card, but I believe there is a minimum. My order was over $25 so no problems in hitting whichever their minimum amount was. read more

I usually come here for cakes for my parents birthday. I preordered a cake on Monday and they called late on Monday to cancel, saying they didn't have enough ingredients to fulfill the order. We said okay, we placed an order for pickup for Wednesday morning and we showed up today and they claimed that the the order was never taken down. My parents are very disappointed and frustrated because of the poor service and waste of time from driving back and forth. Please train your staff better. If you want the order to be taken down correctly, you either have to do online order or into the store. read more

This place is crazy! I heard about long lines here but dang! So I came on a Saturday morning, after checking out their desserts online and saw they have Taiwanese style breakfast so made me crave some. So I wanted just that one thing. I walked in and immediately saw the item I wanted, which is on the counter, right by the cashier. Then, I saw the long line. "This is ridiculous", I thought to myself as I'm standing in line, with only one thing on my mind that I can see is right there but yet so far away. So I got out of the line, asked the cashier if I need to wait in line for, while pointing at, the item I wanted, which is right in front of her. She looked so confused or even scared to give me an okay to jump the line, she sought help from her colleagues. Finally, about a minute later, she said "yes you can come stand right here" while pointing at a shorter line. While I was waiting in yet another line I heard this guy behind me ask the staff across the room about his to-go order. He said he can see his order sitting on the counter, and asked if he needed to wait in (the long ass) line. The staff told him yes, and under my breath I was saying how ridiculous that is. Seriously, people with orders need to wait in line, just to pay and pick up? Then what is the frickin point? It doesn't make sense and it's just so stupid. They really need to have a Pick Up line to accommodate those people. I'm not sure what the hype is. The breakfast item I tried was just aight, nothing spectacular or extraordinary. JJ bakery is super good and cheap. I've just about tried everything this place has to offer in the past few years. My favorites includes the Seaweed Roll, Eggtart, Soy Milk, Taro cake, Milk Bar and the Oscar bread. The prices here are very reasonable and things do run out so call ahead so they can put aside the breads you want. People complain about the service and how rude the cashiers are but come on, this place is super busy and isn't your typical bakery. At any given time, this place is swarmed with hungry customers. Always look for LINDA as she is the FASTEST and NICEST cashier. Linda is very helpful so I always ask her what's good to eat. Everyone else is slow and can be rude at times. Avoid going during rush hour as parking can be a pain and the lines can get super long. read more

JJ Bakery I haven't had you before until this year and I do like you but I don't think it is super amazing. Some items I have tried but probably will not get is the watermelon cake, it looks cute but the taste isn't cute at all. Your almond pastry doesn't have enough almonds on it or maybe I just got a bad one since I came in 30 minutes before you were closing. JJ bakery does asian baked goods really well, but most of the other items they offer are misses. I love getting the taro, pineapple, custard, and green onion buns here! They are all soft, fluffy, and flavorful. Fresh bread also comes out at all times of the day, and most breads are replenished often, so no worries about arriving later in the day. Some items that are badly executed include the creme brulée and their chicken leg meal. The creme brulée has a sort of mushy consistency with lumps in it, not the smooth custard that I expected. The sugar on top was also liquidy, unlike thin caramelized crust of a creme brulée. The chicken leg meal was also poorly made- the piece of chicken I received was was stringy and the sauce on top turned the batter covering the chicken into a mess. I also had their macarons which are good! They were able to replace a cracked one for me in a set I was giving to a friend, but not until much coddling on my part haha. Parking is also hard to get, for the plaza JJ's is located in also houses other popular restaurants such as Din Tai Fung. But most people are in and out, so you should find parking after a few rounds. As long as you stick with their baked breads or cakes, all shall be well! read more

But its always their customer services service that was holding them back from getting a full 5 star. Today, I had a horrible encounter with the girl who worked the register. The girl who worked the register with a male associate, rolls her (baby blue circle lens) eyes at me, when I ask her to go get a Japanese Creme Puff from the opposite end of the counter inside the front fridge area. Trust me, if I could have gotten it myself, I would have. Honestly, if you want to roll your eyes at a customer (I asked her for the creme puff nicely!), please wait til the customer walks away and isn't there. It was pretty obvious that she rolled her 'cute blue' eyes at me, only because she did it in front of me, to my face. Ehh! I think Asian bakeries are awesome. The items that we bought were still warm. They bring more out throughout the day. The Hot Dog rolls are good. Of course, I had to get some since they were so fresh. As was the loaf of bread (but it would taste bland to an American palette). Lastly the Raisin bun. After a lackluster lunch at Din Tai Fung, which is across the parking lot, saw a promo sign for lemon tarts. And in I went. The lemon tart was ok, but nothing particularly special about it. The REAL winner here was the seaweed roll which is like an Asian burrito. Instead of a tortilla, this one has a thin layer of seaweed (like the kind used in sushi rolls) wrapped around a soft-bread like base. In the middle are your proteins including pork floss (like a furry shredded pork - trust me though, it's good), ham, sweet egg (similar to tamago), mayo...and the x-factor, peanut powder. The peanut powder adds flavor and texture, rounding out the flavors of the already complex snack item. At under $3, this is a fantastic snack or light meal for anytime of the day. This review is for the cake I got here for my cousin's birthday. It was a taro and red bean paste and pudding 12" cake with glazed fruit on top and fondant wrapped around the sides. It came with a Happy Birthday sign and a couple of candles. Wasn't offered the ability to write the message directly on the cake, but there wasn't much room on top to do so anyway. As far as the taste, not really to my liking. The cake itself is pretty bland, and the pudding and taro/red bean paste doesn't really go with the white cream on the cake. The fondant was hard and really bland. Glazed fruit is just meh for me. The price is on par with other local bakeries for a similarly sized cake. No qualms here. The store is always busy at all times for pastries. I waited probably 15 minutes to get in and out of this place. Staff is in a lets-move-through-all-these-people-as-fast-as-we-can mode, so not super friendly or anything. The parking lot is kind of small and if you come during dinner time when patrons are trying to get to Din Tai Fung and Phoenix, parking gets really tough to find. Not to mention the spots are a little tight. And with a bunch of asian drivers in the lot, just be careful. I've seen some people park in the neighboring Arcadia Supermarket lot and just hop the little 1 foot wall that separates the two plazas - not legal, but not sure anyone is keeping track. I always go to this JJ Bakery whenever I go to Din Tai Fung because it's located in the same shopping center. The pastries here aren't bad, but since I always end up going here at night (usually around 6-7ish), they always run out of the pastries I want! It's super disappointing because I guess they don't continuously make more pastries throughout the day, unlike 85C in Irvine, where they make new batches of pastries every couple of minutes. But JJ is definitely way more reasonably priced than 85C and when they do have the pastries I like in stock, I love this place. I really like their neapolitan cake in the refrigerated section because it's super fluffy and not too sweet. For individual savory pastries, I like their curry pastry, as well as their hot dog pastries. For individual sweet pastries, I like their gigantic white flaky buttery cookies. They also have some good to-go items. I really like their almond cookies because they're chewy and they use a lot of almond extract. I'm not as much of a fan of their thin almond brittle - I still prefer extra chocolatey American style brittle. I really don't like their BBQ pork bun. The flavors taste extremely artificial to me, so if you want good buns...I'd recommend going to a good dim sum place instead. read more

I give JJ Bakery 3.7 stars. But I rounded up just cause I was satisfied by what I had there today. (chocolate danish bread and Salmon bento-- both super yummy) JJ Bakery is one of my favorite Asian bakeries (maybe even more than 85 cause of their variety). They have a huge selection of breads and cakes and drinks and bentos. I mostly go for the bread, which is always in high demand and constantly being brought out fresh from the oven. For the most part, most of their breads taste best on the day of and so-so if left for longer. I'm also impressed by their taro items, which taste a lot better than the neighboring Cathy Bakery's nearby. They are a bit more expensive, but in general, they do have the taste + quality to back up their price. My personal favorites are their strawberry mochi dessert (though ridiculously expensive at $2.85), chocolate danish bread, Japanese cream puffs (cheaper than Beard Papas at $1 each and delicious), and Salmon rice bento (also on the pricier end at $6.50). I would definitely recommend coming here to get your bread/sweets fix or if you need a lunch or a snack for a long car ride. The variety in this Taiwanese/Chinese-style bakery is wonderful... you can get cakes, mousses, buns, small pastries (both sweet and savory), sandwiches, and more. And for the smaller items, the prices are very reasonable for such fresh and delicious baked goods (usually $1-$2 per item). I'm a fanatic about sweets, and in particular, Asian breads. I heard about JJ through hype spread around the 626, so I figured I'd check it out since it's pretty conveniently located near the mall. + FIRST IMPRESSIONS: JJ Bakery is in the same plaza as Din Tai Fung, Phoenix, Tea Bar Starry. It's a bit of a mess trying to get into this small lot because of how many people come through here in a day. The morning rush can be intense because of all the people who want their fresh breads. + PARKING: Parking is pretty bad too. This plaza is ALWAYS packed - whether for the breads at JJ, or the dumplings at DTF, I've never seen this plaza even SLIGHTLY empty. There IS another section of the parking in the back (behind Tea Bar Starry) that usually isn't too crowded. + SERVICE: Typical Asian service - indifferent rudeness, but occasionally you'll get a nicer lady who rings you up. To the other Yelper who said that if you don't speak Mandarin, then you probably shouldn't come here, that's slightly true, but still, a language barrier shouldn't be an excuse for poor customer service! + BREADS: I got a few of their breads, but nothing was really noteworthy. - The green tea bun was decent, but not super rich in flavor or soft as I imagined it to be. It tasted more like a bun with a slight aftertaste of green tea, which wasn't what I was looking for. - The watermelon bread, although cute, was really just a cream roll with food coloring. Definitely not worth buying, unless you've got some 5 year olds who you want to impress? - Cream puff was your standard cream puff. It tasted almost like the thawed cream puffs I can buy in bulk from Sam's Club. OVERALL: It was like every other average to mediocre Asian bakery in the 626. Service was ehhh, breads weren't that tasty, and I definitely felt that I could've gotten a better bang for my buck elsewhere. Taro buns! We wandered in here while waiting for Din Tai Fung to open across the way. It's similar to 85C in Irvine with a smaller selection. I love taro, and I love their taro buns. It was soft, sweet, and had just the right amount of taro. I also tried the butter milk taro bun. The texture was very crumbly inside, so it wasn't that great. My friends also got their garlic bread which was soft and flavorful and a huge strawberry mochi with real strawberries inside. This place has some decent, good breads. I think the best part is the reasonable pricing. Here's my review so far: Ham and cheese bread roll- 2 star. I think they put american cheese inside. That was a bit of a turn off since most ham and cheese breads often have swiss or some type of white cheese. Small bakery but have a lot of specialty baked goods on their shelves you won't find anywhere else. I only got one thing here. I forgot the name of it but was a Cherry Chocolate Mochi ($2.85 as of 04/05/14). The inside was like blackforest cake (so, take note gluten-free people, not all mochis are gluten-free), and the chocolate mousse inside was divine -- rich yet fluffy. So I have to say that I'm a total fan of JJ. I like their bread and lunch boxes. The problem with JJ is you never know what you're going to get when you walk in. Depending on when you walk in, different items are available. Since they're busy, bread runs out fast so if you have a particular bread you're looking for, you might have to come a couple of times before you come across it. Their cakes are excellent. They usually have cakes available to choose from but you can order them ahead of time. They won't write on it for you but they have little inserts they will put in for you that says happy birthday or congratulations. Lunch boxes come out around 11am and run out before 1pm. I came here in the morning and remember coming here growing up. I haven't visited this location in a while and decided to stop by. Food- There is a pretty decent amount of bread to choose from and I ended getting the hot dog, the dry pork and the ham and cheese. Enjoyed all of them. My favorite Chinese bakery in LA. I always go here before and/or after going to Din Tai Fung across the plaza. They make fresh items that sell out by the afternoon, so go early for the best selection. Many Chinese bakeries in LA have pastries that turn hard and lose moisture if you leave it for the next day. Not JJ Bakery - the pastries still taste fresh and soft. They make an awesome mini fruit tart. It's a little bigger than a half dollar coin and is just the perfect two-bite snack. My other favorite is the milk sung pastry. Once again, most Chinese bakeries in LA screw this one up, but JJ actually makes it right with the grainy-creamy filling. I just had REALLy good cheesecake at JJ's this week. It's not as heavy and dense as your average American, NY-style cheesecake, but it's not as light as a Japanese-style cheescake either. I like it because it still tastes rich without being overwhelmingly cloying like some of the Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes. It's true that this place is pricier than most other bakeries. I don't regularly eat their breads, but I have tried the pineapple buns here which were pretty good from what I remember. They serve breakfast in the morning, so that's a plus! Come here for bread whenever I'm in Arcadia. Tons of variety, so you should be able to find something you like. Plus, they're constantly baking, so if you wait a while, you might be lucky and get a freshly baked pastry right out of the oven. I loooove Asian bakeries! Something about them just makes me so happy. We went in after having lunch across the way at Din Tai Fung, and I was amazed at the hustle and bustle of the place. Workers were constantly bringing out fresh trays of buns, and I couldn't help myself. I took a taro bun, custard bun, red bean bread, and something wrapped in seaweed that I forget the name of. I was far too full from lunch to have any of the bread right then (although the freshly-baked warmth emitting from them tempted me on many occasions), but they were still delicious the next morning! Soft and a lot of filling -- just the way buns should be! (I hate buying buns and finding a spoonful of filling and a whole lot of bread...) It's a good thing I came after lunch; my full stomach was the only thing preventing me from buying one of everything. Bottom line: JJ Bakery knows their baked goods. read more

Whenever there is a birthday in the family (or even with good friends) JJ Bakery is 1 of the first places I think of to buy a cake for the celebration. Why you ask? Because their cakes are beautiful and amazing. You truly eat with your eyes first and this place definitely gives meaning to that phrase "feast for the eyes". The cakes in the bakery case are plentiful and are artfully created. You can tell that a lot of skill and talent went into every single one of those cakes (I took a cake decorating class and it was hard just to make a simple looking cakes, so the cakes here just blow me away). But of course with such skill and talent would of course come with a price, especially since JJ Bakery is also a well known bakery. Prices for cakes range from $30- ish to $45 ish or so... yea that's pretty expensive... but if I am buying a cake for family or a very close friend of mine, then it's worth the extra money to fork over and give as a present. This place does not write your birthday receiver's name on the cake like other bakeries, but they do give you a few candles, a large plastic knife and a little cake sign that says "Happy Birthday" (eh, good enough for government work... get's the job done). But if you aren't here for the birthday cakes, there are also single sliced cakes in the display case that is also just as enticing, along with many individual wrapped baked goodies behind you. You can buy buns, breads, cookies, croissants, etc. Some are sweet and some are savory (like BBQ pork bun), some are heavy and some are dense. I still love everything that they have here. But of course there are other bakeries around this area that have a slightly cheaper price and the quality of their offerings are just as good. A few cons of this place though is the plaza it is located in. Sometimes this plaza can get pretty busy since it shares the same parking with other businesses here like Din Tai Fung and the Phoenix Bakery. But you can just park at the market right next to this plaza and just walk over. And also there is limited English spoken here. But you can still get your cake (or whatever else you want to buy here) and purchase it just fine since money is the universal language, especially more so now a days. But overall, this place is clean and neat, their bakery case is always nice and clean, all of their bakery items are usually adequately stocked and this place really does have something for everyone here. read more
