Their breads are pretty good. Too bad they don't have pineapple bun. I do like their cream bun.

quarter sheet for $13.50 - crispy goodness in the middle, not too sweet

We'll usually swing by if we're having a meal in one of the restaurants on the other side of the mall. The baked goods are tasty and fresh; I'll usually get a few sponge cakes and a pineapple bun (no pineapple inside). But this past time we were in town, my mom told us about a special two-layer cake that they make. It's basically two layers of spongecake with a few crispy layers in between (sort of like the pastry that is in a napoleon). It's only $13.50 for a quarter sheet (about 12 good-sized pieces). A lot less sweet than other cakes since it's not covered in whipped cream (though I think you can get that as well).

What the heck is this? Awful writing skills. Thanks for ruining our cake.

We always get the flaky layer cake from the Cathy's on Las Tunas in San Gabriel, but I never thought about coming here, especially when I eat at Mei May's, Phoenix and other nearby places. Like any other Asian bakeries, they sell different types of breads & buns. ie. pineapple buttermilk bun, red bean green tea, savory ones...etc. The selection isn't as plentiful as JJ Bakery or 85C. Also, the buns aren't as soft as the other 2 more popular bakeries. But in my opinion, Cathy's is known for ordering cakes (wedding, b-days...etc) I bought a 2 layer taro cake for my baby's birthday. Now if you like taro, this is pretty darn good cake. It's light,(except the creamy frosting, which we scrape off) lightly sweet w/ a generous layer of taro in the middle. We had their taro cake many times and it's always consistently good. The service is mixed. Two ladies handled the counter. The young one lacked personality and facial expressions. The older one who worked the cash register was much more pleasant and smiled a lot. Aside from that, it's still my go-to place for taro cake. And if I feel adventurous one day, I might even try something different. 4 for the awesome cake & partial good service, but not so much for the variety of buns and lack of training on cake decorating skills (see photo) the "happy birthday" message on the cake needs improvement! so I gotta drop it down to an overall 3.

Cathy's is still my favorite places for cakes. Jimmy is the best baker! I usually get my cakes made from him. Sponge is always soft and fluffy. Cream is light and not overly sweet. Fruit filling is fresh and always sweet. The decorations on top are always pretty. I love when the cake has the almond crust around it, adds awesome texture. If you want a great asian cake, come to Cathys!

OK, I'll stop the bakery bashing. It was getting depressing as I just cannot find any decent Taiwanese Bakery. It was one disappointment one after another. It was just driving me nuts and dashing any sense of belongings. Then one shining moment that only Whitney Houston can sang about. A bakery that actually can sell the items I was looking for. Oh the tears of joy! The happiness I was able to express. I was loading up the Pineapple buns like it was going to be discontinued like a Mars candy bar. It cost $.90 each, but who the hell cares? Knowing my luck, the next 12 bakeries I walked into will ran out of the pineapple buns, so I took no chance and grabbed about half dozen. That will tied me down for a week. The cool thing was they also have the "flat square" egg & ham sandwich. Look up my Mi Casa bakery review and you'll understand why I was so fascinated by that thing. The egg looked like a processed cheese and it's flat, but it tasted like an egg. You have to ordered that to find that out. Of course I munched down that thing like crazy.... crazy like a fox. Other cakes and deserts are there too. It's no different from J.J.'s down the other side. However this one was geared towards more to the traditional Chinese bakery, while J.J. was gearing towards the tourists and other mainstream stay. The service moved a lot more smoothly than J.J. I'm glad that there's no hiccup to the operation. They baked a lot more in the morning. In the bakery world, I'm guessing they have to throw away the unsold bun bread by the end of the day. Maybe that's why no one wants to bake more than necessary. However, you just don't want to walk in to a place and being told the item is sold out for the rest of the day even though it's early. This bakery did not disappoint and I walked out with a bagful of goodies.

Cash only! Prices are a little cheaper than other nearby bakeries. Their selection seems a bit fresher too and well presented.

After tasting the items I had brought home the only reason to go here is for the curry empanada. The rest was very generic and so so.

I ordered the chocolate ganache cake for Mother's Day based on the chocolate ganache cake I ordered…read morea few years ago from them for my Grandmother's Birthday. Something clearly changed between then and now because the version I ordered on Saturday was horrible. The cake was mostly dark chocolate, as described, but it had the thinnest layer of raspberry to the point where it was hardly noticeable - which is the main reason we ordered the cake (chocolatey but a fair amount of raspberry for a palatable contrast). The way the cake is made, it's hardly edible. The layer that is supposed to be chocolate cream is clearly just chocolate frosting! I've never had something so inedible. Plus the cake has non-edible decorations on it unbeknownst to us....on sight we assumed they were edible sugar crystals but they were not! Someone could've gotten hurt! We should've at least been forewarned! Lastly, we were scheduled to pick the cake up on Saturday afternoon at a specific time. And of course they were busy due to Mother's Day weekend but we stood in line for at least 15 minutes and received no help! The woman behind the register was counting out both registers without offering an explanation or speaking to any of the customers! Plus there were at least 5 employees standing around doing nothing! No one ever asked if anyone in line were here to just pick up a prepaid order. You don't need the register for that! We finally inquired what was going on and stated we had an appointment to pick up a prepaid order. A young woman employee caught an attitude but hustled our order which hadn't been boxed or bagged though it was past our pickup time. Very disappointed in Merengue. Not one employee offered an apology or an explanation. Just attitude and nonchalance. I work in retail and know how hard and frustrating it can be but this is a service industry and customer service is very important. I'm not asking for anyone to jump through hoops just respect as a customer. The terrible part is my mother was the one waiting patiently in line for 15 minutes and I had to jump in to ask the staff about their service because my mom and these other ladies were being ignored by Merengue's staff as though they weren't standing there. I DID NOT appreciate the treatment of my mother or myself once I spoke up about the crazy wait. No one treats my mom like she's just part of the furniture especially after we've spent money at this establishment. They certainly weren't giving anything away. My mom and the other ladies were being patient and nice. But I had to get to work and the cake was supposed to be picked up and out the door at 2pm....it was 230! It should've been waiting for us and the staff should've been inquiring with the line about prepaid orders. Instead there were 5 people standing behind the counter doing nothing while a line of people are wondering what's going on! I will not be ordering from Merengue again and will be taking my business down the street to the Paris Baguette Bakery where I should've gone in the first place.

It's fun here cuz you can get a little shopping cart and collect your breads. Kinda went crazy and got a bunch to try. The breads looked like they would be dry but weren't and were all really soft, pillowy, and fluffy. The Black Forest bread was topped with toasted almonds, had jiggly thick sweet custard, and a layer of semi sweet chocolate. The hades bread was the only kinda dry bread and was filled with bittersweet chocolate and had a thin sweet Oreo crust on the bottom like a cheesecake would. The pork floss bread had a swirl of sweet savory pork floss and was topped with nutty crunchy sesame seeds. The banana cream bread was filled with like this cheesecake tasting light cream and had some real bananas inside too. The garlic bread was really good, soft, and had a streak of yummy, savory, garlicy, cheesy goodness. They even had a cilantro pork floss cake?! Wasn't getting any cilantro flaves but the cake was nicely spongy, light, vanillay, and had a swirl of pork floss that actually worked with it. Their black sesame cake was also very spongy, jiggly, light, and airy with good black sesame flaves. They even let you try some free samples of bread which my grandma really enjoyed. Overall this place is pretty good. Black Forest $4.50 Hades $6 Pork floss $5 Banana cream $4.50 Garlic bread $4.50 Cilantro pork floss sponge $5 Black sesame sponge $3.75

As someone who is allergic to dogs, I do not understand how someone can just bring their pet into an establishment that serves food.
