I've been coming to this bakery for years and I always get our dad's birthday cake (6-8 inch taro cake) here as well. Inside is a cozy little shop which you can just walk a small circle and see everything they have. In the back fridge is where they hold some decorative cakes you can purchase same day. I always pay via cash since they were cash only before, I should go next time to ask if I can use my card or phone app like Zelle and Venmo. The pastries range from $1.50 (rolls) to $4.50 depending on the filling and type. They have sandwiches, cupcakes, and pound cakes as well with cream filled pastries or cheesecake in the cold counter. You can special preorder a birthday cake for future events for pick up as well, they have so many options and they come out so nice! My family loves the crispy cake (sponge cake with crispy phyllo dough and cream) which you can ask without icing the same day. This bakery has been here for many years but the quality has really gone downhill. I needed to buy a birthday cake for a family member and asked the store staff which cake was made today. She told me that all the cakes were made today. Well... that was not true. The $28 tiramisu was stale and had a funny sour taste to it. We had to throw the entire thing away. Will not return to this bakery for sure. So disappointing. Update - I received a message from the owner that their refrigerator malfunctioned and did not keep the cream at the right temperature. He apologized and offered a refund. I haven't had a chance to go there to get the refund but I do appreciate his fast response to find the problem. read more

Delicious treats both savory or sweet for a bargain price. I dropped in with my two hungry kiddos and this is the perfect spot if you need a little snack to hold you over. Everything is neatly packaged and the thoughtful selection is not overwhelming.The owner was super sweet and even let me short her by $1 when i had already made my selection and didn't realize that it was a cash only establishment. Family love Cathy's bakery and I don't usually carry cash so I never come in here for their baked goods. But I placed an order over the phone for crispy cake and came to this location for the first time since I live nearby. Family all raved about how fresh and delicious the crispy cake was from this location. It was the best crispy cake we've had from either locations so that earns it a 5 star in my book. We'll usually swing by if we're having a meal in one of the restaurants on the other side of the mall. The baked goods are tasty and fresh; I'll usually get a few sponge cakes and a pineapple bun (no pineapple inside). But this past time we were in town, my mom told us about a special two-layer cake that they make. It's basically two layers of spongecake with a few crispy layers in between (sort of like the pastry that is in a napoleon). It's only $13.50 for a quarter sheet (about 12 good-sized pieces). A lot less sweet than other cakes since it's not covered in whipped cream (though I think you can get that as well). read more

First time ordering their "Crispy Cake", su pi dan gao, and while I waited for my cake, I saw the cashier lady rub her hand across her nose and did not wash her hands. Ew. I looked around for their health department rating and it's a B. Then, I believe I saw the lady in the kitchen cutting what's supposed to be my cake. The entry to the kitchen is not very open so my view was very limited. But, I saw something fall on the floor, and she picked it up. It looked like a piece of that cake. We always get the flaky layer cake from the Cathy's on Las Tunas in San Gabriel, but I never thought about coming here, especially when I eat at Mei May's, Phoenix and other nearby places. Like any other Asian bakeries, they sell different types of breads & buns. ie. pineapple buttermilk bun, red bean green tea, savory ones...etc. The selection isn't as plentiful as JJ Bakery or 85C. Also, the buns aren't as soft as the other 2 more popular bakeries. But in my opinion, Cathy's is known for ordering cakes (wedding, b-days...etc) I bought a 2 layer taro cake for my baby's birthday. Now if you like taro, this is pretty darn good cake. It's light,(except the creamy frosting, which we scrape off) lightly sweet w/ a generous layer of taro in the middle. We had their taro cake many times and it's always consistently good. The service is mixed. Two ladies handled the counter. The young one lacked personality and facial expressions. The older one who worked the cash register was much more pleasant and smiled a lot. Aside from that, it's still my go-to place for taro cake. Cathy's is still my favorite places for cakes. Jimmy is the best baker! I usually get my cakes made from him. Sponge is always soft and fluffy. Cream is light and not overly sweet. Fruit filling is fresh and always sweet. The decorations on top are always pretty. I love when the cake has the almond crust around it, adds awesome texture. I walked in at the end of the night, looked around the whole store and wasn't going to buy anything until I happened see trays and trays of napoleons on the tray rack. My eyes got huge! The Napoleons here are stacked high with airy, flaky dough that holds a firm crunch and then crumbles into light goodness your mouth. The slightly sweet cream moistened my mouth, providing just the right balance of moisture to offset the dough. I couldn't avoid having some of the nuts in the cream spill out onto my napkin when I bit down. One of the best napoleons I've had in years and they are only $1 each. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, nothing else caught my eye. They have various breads and stuffed buns, but they didn't look that appetizing. Pineapple buns, green onion buns, hot dog bun, red bean, etc. It's more of Chinese bakery from when your parents bought baked goods, not the sexier looking baked goods that JJ (around the corner) and 85c now display. If you're craving a napoleon though, it's worth driving a few extra miles to get one here. I haven't seen anyone else in SoCal do one like theirs and that's a good thing for them. read more

I didn't realize that Cathy Bakery is a chain! I absolutely loved the one over in Temple City area and when we were in this neighborhood I saw that there was one here as well -- although I don't know what the difference between just plain Cathy Bakery and what Ellie's Cathy Bakery is. If you go mid-morning, the breads are still warm and it's just THE best. I can attest to them being excellent because I don't even like this style of bread. Lil guy loves the ones with the hotdogs in them and I like the ones with the pork sung, although they are rather stingy on the pork sung. The date pastries are also really delicious. The dates are very smoky and not too sweet. Hubby got the honeycomb cake which he devoured without even letting me have a taste so I can't really give my opinion on that particular item. OK, I'll stop the bakery bashing. It was getting depressing as I just cannot find any decent Taiwanese Bakery. It was one disappointment one after another. It was just driving me nuts and dashing any sense of belongings. Then one shining moment that only Whitney Houston can sang about. A bakery that actually can sell the items I was looking for. Oh the tears of joy! The happiness I was able to express. I was loading up the Pineapple buns like it was going to be discontinued like a Mars candy bar. It cost $.90 each, but who the hell cares? Knowing my luck, the next 12 bakeries I walked into will ran out of the pineapple buns, so I took no chance and grabbed about half dozen. That will tied me down for a week. The cool thing was they also have the "flat square" egg & ham sandwich. Look up my Mi Casa bakery review and you'll understand why I was so fascinated by that thing. The egg looked like a processed cheese and it's flat, but it tasted like an egg. You have to ordered that to find that out. Of course I munched down that thing like crazy.... crazy like a fox. Other cakes and deserts are there too. It's no different from J.J.'s down the other side. However this one was geared towards more to the traditional Chinese bakery, while J.J. was gearing towards the tourists and other mainstream stay. The service moved a lot more smoothly than J.J. I'm glad that there's no hiccup to the operation. They baked a lot more in the morning. In the bakery world, I'm guessing they have to throw away the unsold bun bread by the end of the day. Maybe that's why no one wants to bake more than necessary. However, you just don't want to walk in to a place and being told the item is sold out for the rest of the day even though it's early. The assorted breads here are pretty crappy. Dry on the outside and inside. I think the only reason they are still in business (with so many other bakeries in close proximity) is that they make a flaky layer chiffon cake well here. They have the prettiest cakes and at reasonable prices. I once purchased a cake here for a birthday. It was on the spur and was pulled from their display case. I was worried it would be dry, but it turned out to be really moist and the fruit inside was really good. When I recently stopped by, they had just put out a fresh selection of mochi: peanut butter, black sesame and red bean. All were really soft and tasty. They also have a great selection of breads and rolls for your snacky happiness. read more

I really like this place's "shu pi" cake, it is thin crispy flakes in the middle of cake with whip cream filling. It's actually pretty unique, I have not yet found another bakery that makes it. All of Cathy's Bakery's location carry's it. You can ask for extra cream in the middle. (which I always do) It makes the crispy flakes go stale faster, which is my excuse to eat the whole cake in one sitting...haha If you don't want to pig out on this whole cake by yourselves another solution I guess is to invite your friends over to eat it. WE WILL NEVER COMING BACK AGAIN. We ordered this cake a week before our first press conference, we sent example picture to them but the result comes really bad like three-year old kids painting which you can tell in the picture below. As a result we purchased another cake in Walmart right before our conference. The worse part is their customer service, the only thing we want is expecting a full refund of the cake.
