Wow, IFT Bakery has been in business for 30+ years! I have been coming to the shopping center where it is located for many years and I have never visited this bakery shop until now. Lots of free parking. The only reason why my Mom and I were here this past Saturday was because my Mom saw their advertisement on TV. Buy one get one deal on cookie snacks. It's a very small bakery. Atmosphere appears slightly dated. They sell specialty snacks, frozen buns, sweet and savory pastries, bread, and more. At the time we were visiting, they had limited baked goods left for the day since it was near closing time. I ended up buying $14+ worth of bread and sweet buns. Prices were okay nothing extremely high. European mochi taro bun was very light and good... good amount of filing and not too sweet. Oat Raisin Walnut bread was warm and fresh... very fluffy and tasty! I haven't tried the Walnut Tarts yet. Two lady staff members were super friendly and helpful. One lady spoke Cantonese/Mandarin and the other lady just spoke Mandarin. They were trying to get us to buy more stuff, but we didn't bite. Glad we got a few baked goods for the road. A TRUE HIDDEN GEM. Bought FRESHLY MADE pineapple cakes here and they tasted PHENOMENAL. THE BEST I've ever had. You open the package and the buttery scent hits you. I got the one in the yellow packaging that's less sweet and the filling has pineapple chunks inside. The cake is not too sweet with a strong buttery flavor, complimented perfectly by the slightly sour pineapple paste with chunks of pineapple. They are pretty pricey, but it is well worth it if you are a fan of pineapple cakes. Plus, they don't use any preservatives, so it lasts only 3-4 weeks. Would highly recommend! read more

Stellar Taiwanese bakery specializing in Taiwanese Pineapple Cakes. I'm a long time supporter of this mom and pop shop. As reference, I bought 300pcs back in October 2022 as wedding favors and they were of course a huge hit!! I came back again to pick up Pasalubong (in Filipino culture, it's a gift or souvenir given to a friend or relative by a person who has returned from a trip or arrived for a visit) ahead of a trip to New Orleans and these are perfect! They are not ChiaTe (most famous brand in Taiwan and the brand I literally cart home boxes and boxes) but they are the absolute best stateside! They have two varieties, the one in the golden package shown or another in a pink package. The difference between the two is that the pink package has a more buttery taste while the golden package has a more tangy pineapple taste! Each are sold individually ($3-4 per price) or packaged in a box (as shown). A Chinese style bakery specialized in traditional, authentic Taiwanese pastries (cakes). We got 3 of the most celebrated varieties namely, the pineapple cake, the sun cake and the Yen Yung cake (meat based). Each cake is individually wrapped. Ours came in a box of a dozen. You can mix and match the varieties. They all look good and appetizing. The best of the 3 is the pineapple cake which is flaky and the right amount of sweetness. The Yen Yung cake (with meat and salted egg yolk) is also flaky and tasty. The sun cake is also flaky but is a bit blend tasting and not as good as the other 2. A bit skimpy on the filling too! It's a great small asian bakery that's been here a while. Located in the San Gabriel market plaza, next to the water place. It's better to come here for your bread fix after shopping at the supermarket than buying it there. Just walk a little more for better quality breakfast/snack. It's a small place and they don't have that many selection, especially if you're looking for savory breads, but so far they're pretty good. Most small asian bakery don't have a lot of savory bread options anyway. They do open a little later than the other bakeries. Small bakery usually closes at 5 or 6pm but this place closes at 8pm, so you can still squeeze in after dinner! read more

PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) Been seeing these colorful boxes of pastries near the checkout counters at 99 Ranch. Besides the eye catching designs on the boxes, what caught my attention were the prices; $30 dollars for a box of pineapple cakes. Hmm... pineapple cakes were always the hidden gem of Asian snacks, less than $4 for a pack of 6. Cheap and delicious. Is this inflation or am I missing out on some next-level pineapple cake game? As a food adventurer I feel it is my duty to go down this rabbit hole so let's start the taste test with the most popular premium brand from Taiwan, SunnyHills, which is around $40 for a box of 12. The popularity of SunnyHills has a lot to do with its farm to table concept of using locally-sourced pineapple farms, all natural ingredients with no additives. Their butter pastry are made from New Zealand grass-fed butter and Japanese flour. They even proudly make this claim on their website: "Our eggs come from a farmer who plays classical music for his hens" Since SunnyHills don't use any winter melon fillings, their pineapple fillings are more fibrous and drier compared to the smoother fillings of the more traditional pineapple cakes. In the other corner of the ring are the locally famous pineapple cakes from IFT Bakery. IFT Bakery sells three different types of pineapple cakes. The traditional smooth filling type, the cakes with tart pineapple chunks, and the cakes with egg yolks. The knowledgeable staff suggested with a curious anime half wink that our laowai friends prefer the traditional style, while our Asians friends prefer the chunky style. She was right though I can't lie, I generally prefer chunky over a clean and smooth taste profile. Ben & Jerry's chunky mix-ins over the more traditional Haagen-Dazs. My final rankings would be: 1. IFT Bakery with tart pineapple chunks 2. JJ Bakery 3. 85C Bakery Personally it is not worth the effort to import SunnyHills from Taiwan, especially because IFT is better tasting overall. However if SunnyHills's company values enhance your enjoyment of their pineapple cakes then they might be worth it. My gf always gets their specialty item here, the flaky meat filled pork round pie. It is $6 each an its crazy but lots of people buy it as gifts. Used to go to Yi Mei for taiyangbing but the ones here are better. Also get the Chinese tamale, savory rice cake and meatball. They taste as good as any Taiwanese restaurant in Monterey Park 1. Taiwanese pineapple came (yellow package): has tiny slices of pineapple and slightly more tart. Cake seems more buttery. 2. Pineapple cake (magenta package): tastes more like the kind you get at most stores but still good 3. Sun cake (orange lettering): this has honey. Less sweet because of more flaky layers 4. Sun came (yellow lettering): this has maltose only. Is thinner and sweeter 5. Lotus bean and Red bean with yolk: both good. Bean based on your personal preference. I like the yolk because its a little bit salty, balancing out sweetness. This place always has these which is harder to find at 85 or JJ which I think address more seasonal. 6. Mung bean cake: this is the only place I know that had this type. Instead of a spongy cake, this is soft and powdery. Goes well with tea. I used to get this often on Taiwan but it's hard to bring over because it crumbles easy. Frozen food 1. Tamale: Like how there are different variations. A friend recommended this place for vegetarian dumplings, so I checked online before I went. The price on the menu was totally different from the price I paid! And it was a dollar more than other places!! I bought 10 of the meat dumplings for $59.50 and 10 vegetarian dumplings for $57.50( buy 10 get one free). The dumpling rice texture was individual and not sticky as other places, the taste was ok. But the price was a bit too high!! I won't pay for it again. read more

I like this bakery for their baked breads. One of the baked breads I really like is their nut breads. There are all kinds of assorted nuts in this particular bread (I don't know what is their official name of this) and really gives it a lot of texture and flavor. But while I am here, I also like to pick up any other appetizing breads that I would like to try upon my visit (at Asian bakeries, I feel like I make that impulse buy like you would for that pack of gum at the supermarket at the register). All of the baked goods I have had here so far have always been well liked by myself, my family members and friends. My overall impression of I Fu Tang - super nice owner + Taiwanese baked goods using high quality ingredients, but poor cake selection (only two cakes available ... one of the cakes was tiramisu) and fairly average-tasting breads. This is one of the two I Fu Tang Bakery in the SGV (San Gabriel Valley) area. The bakery offers frozen dumplings, pork buns, Taiwanese tamale, soy milk, and Taiwanese baked goods (e.g. pineapple cake, sun cake, moon cake, etc) You will find three different pineapple cakes here: * Traditional Pineapple Cake (~$0.85, one with a picture of Taiwan): Not-so-flaky crust and tasted like a pretty cheap pineapple cake. (2/5) * Butter Pineapple Cake (~$2, one with lady on the package cover): This pineapple cake contains winter melon filling and I thought it was pretty good - not too sweet, not too sour, and not-overly-flaky crust. (4/5) * Premium Pineapple Cake ($2.65, one with fancy white cover with two pictures of pineapple): This is the most popular pineapple cake in Taiwan right now (very similar to SunnyHills pineapple cakes - many Japanese tourist went to Taiwan for these pineapple cakes). This version of pineapple cake doesn't have winter melon filling. It had the most flaky crust out of the three and tasted a bit more sour. I liked it ... but not good enough to justify the price. (3.5/5) Not exactly my go-to bakery, but I would still come back for their pineapple cakes. I Fu Tang offers good quality and the best prices when it comes to cakes. I ordered a 6 inch fruit cake and 8 inch taro cake. You can choose different flavors for the 8 inch cake, but the 6 inch cake is limited to fruits only. Their taro cake is extremely fresh & the taro pastes were extremely delicious. Been here many times so this review is long over due. Great bakery very reasonable prices. I like the wheat bread with the walnuts was told that no sugar was added, great for diabetics like me. My wife doesn't like stuff that's very sweet like the pastries from american bakeries like Amy''s in Montebello. They have a large assortment of breads, buns and delightful desserts and cakes. If they run out of something you like, you can order it and they'll call you when it's ready And they take credit cards too. 4.1 stars. I haven't tried a large variety of their breads but their red bean and mochi bread along with the taro and mochi bread is AMAZingggg! The filling is super flavorful and tasty blended with the chewy mochi, and the texture of the bread is light and fluffy like a pillow on the inside with a mildly crunchy outside. Came in 2 times the last month m. Kind of disappointed. Specifically asked for green bean Liu Do Pong (asked in Chinese) since this was my moms request. Lady gave me 2 boxes (turns out it was Liu Do Gao) yes my mistake bc I don't know what it is but my Chinese isn't that horrible to not say the difference from Pong to Gao. Ok fine, mistake cost me $24 (a little pricey) Took my mom there today so she could buy it. Ended up buying peanut milk candy for sis, some bread and then was going to buy the Pong as my mom usually buys from here. Price is so much higher $5.95 for one versus $2.75 with smaller size. My mom asked why the Liu Do Gao was so expensive they claim to use "olive oil" okaaayy...... $12 for a small box.. wouldn't be so peeved if my mom and in-laws enjoyed it... but the flavor wasn't there... I still would have got it for her but she said it was too overpriced. Then found out they have a point system which lady didn't tell me about last time. Well this point system $10 1 pt. $24 spent didn't get anything last time. Today she spent $20 2 pt got one Tai Yang bing. Pretty small. So unfortunately kind of disappointing. I tried the wife cake from this location and I really didn't think it was that amazing. I would say it is ok but I probably would not come back and order something from them. This bakery is quite popular in the San Gabriel Valley but maybe I'm a bit odd on not thinking this place is amazing. My parents though love coming here and they do enjoy this bakery. Perhaps not all their items are that great. But there are certain items that really give me the reason for giving them 5 stars. First of all, I think they're a little underrated. They may not have the prettiest pastries or cakes, but some of the stuff they do have are pretty darn good. The taro and mochi bun is the BEST thing ever. There's a good amount of taro and mochi smacked in the middle in the best proportion ever. The mochi is sweeter and balances the taro so well because the taro is not too sweet. I am glad that they don't add too much sugar to the paste because it's so unnecessary! Second, is the red bean mochi one which I would say falls a little below the taro one. It's the same shape and size but the red bean is sweeter. Overall, I prefer the taro flavor. BUT what's cool about the red bean one is that it has red beans dotted along the bottom crust of the bun. MMMHMMM just thinking about it. Additionally, I don't know exactly how to describe it but although it's this fluffy bread bun, the circumference of it is not exactly the same. It is like this sweeter, flakier, and denser crust. It's sweeter and it easily breaks off so you can eat it first. You must see and eat it to know what I'm talking about. GO GET ONE! read more

They specialize in the old school, hand made, labor intensive Taiwanese pastry that no other bakeries could offer. I got married recently, and I could not find the perfect Pineapple Cakes and Taiwanese Wedding Cakes any where in LA. After seared all over LA, San Gabriel, I was about to give up, until I stumbled upon this place. They were super duper nice, and they spoke to me in Taiwanese, which reminded me of the old school Taiwan. They offered me 3 samples of different pineapple cakes, and they brought back so much childhood memories.
