WHY I CAME HERE? My dear friend used to buy cakes from Cathy's Bakery in San Gabriel. I don't know if he still does or not. I have never been here in the past until most recently. My Mom and I had a wonderful lunch at Chong Qing Special Noodles that happens to be next door to Cathy's. I took the opportunity to finally check out this bakery. CAKE / PASTRIES: They are known for their crispy sponge cake. For my first visit, I did buy one sponge cake (no crispy), one pumpkin seed cake, and one napoleon crisp. I enjoyed the sponge cake... it was very light, airy, and bouncy... just delicious! As for the pumpkin seed sponge cake, this did not go down well... cake was dry... will not get again. Napolean crisps were yummy! For my second visit, I ordered a quarter sheet of crispy sponge cake ($28) to share with my colleagues at work. It was SO GOOD! Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of it... will order it again to snap some photos and of course to eat it as well LOL. STAFF / SERVICE: 1st visit - gentleman behind the counter was friendly. Service was fine. 2nd visit - lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. Service was great. She gave some cake recommendations per my ask. Thank you miss! INTERIOR / AMBIANCE: It is a small bakery. Place was clean. Sweet and savory pastries were individually wrapped. They were placed on the trays along the wall. I didn't see any tongs or trays available for use. Just grab the items with your hands. There were a few cakes in the display case. EXTERIOR / PARKING: Very limited free parking. Maybe about 30-35 parking spots shared with 3 other businesses within the small Las Tunas Square. Street parking is available. Please do read the street signs. RECOMMEND THIS PLACE? If you love crispy sponge cake and/or sweet and savory pastries in general, this place is for you! SO YES!

I am a deep lover of Napoleon (Mille-feuille). I like it with crispy but not hard phyllo layers, mixed with cream. It has always been my favorite dessert. Mille-feuille is so flaky that it often makes me choke. Cathy's Bakery has a cake called crispy sponge cake, which is two slices of sponge cake with several layers of phyllo in the middle. The dry, flaky layers wrapped with moist sponge cake create a crunchy and crispy texture but won't make you choke. I have never visited Cathy's Bakery, and I didn't even know where it was until I checked Google Maps. The cakes were brought by my daughter's friend to my home on New Year's Day. We ate the cake while playing mahjong. It was sweet, but not too sweet. As a Chinese person, when we describe a cake or dessert, the best is "sweet but not too sweet", which means below average in sweetness is good. By the way, remember to eat them as quickly as possible. Once you leave them overnight, the crispy phyllo in the middle will become soft, and the whole cake will be a waste. Anyway, I never visited the bakery, but my daughter's friend brought us a box of 32 pieces of very tasty crispy sponge cake. It had a very good texture. We didn't finish them all, and it was still edible the second day. But by the third day, the phyllo became chewy, and I didn't want to have it anymore. Still, it's a good cake. I recommend it, but don't buy too much.

Decent bakery with a limited selection. This location is cash-only, so make sure to bring some. It's smaller than their other locations. I came to pick up a few hotdog buns--they tasted good. Nothing spectacular, but still good. Overall, a decent spot to pickup pastries.

Cash only but no sign posted. Limited options of bread -- and it was 1pm on a Tuesday. Rude service and hard to find parking. Cherry on top, the bread is just okay nothing special.

    Fruit tarts. Simple and tasty.

We often forget to post good and rave about the places we take for granted. This is one of them. The fruit tarts are so tasty and well made. So are their Napoleon crunch cakes. Great service and communication with the staff as well. Thank you for making my son's birthday special each year!

This is my go to place for Crispy Cakes! I ordered the same day (quarter sheet) for a birthday celebration and Cathy's Bakery came through! The filo dough was crunchy and cake was moist! The cake was already all decorated before I came for pick up. I think it was $38. Extremely reasonable! You have to tell them you want it with cream, otherwise, it will be bare with only the cake and filo dough. Cash only.

We've been ordering from Cathy's for two years now and they're one of the only remaining bakeries that does the crispy layers cake (see photo). In Canto, it's pronounced Chui Pei Dan Goh. Still very reasonably priced.

Ordered the taro, pudding spong cake with crispy pastry layers. The spring cake was moist and fluffy. Taro paste was smooth. Pudding was light and soft. Also it fits the Asian definition of good deserts: not very sweet!

It's not a fancy bakery. It's been here for decades. What I like is the $10 for 10 for baking goods from the day before.

The hours are a bit limited, but I managed to make it in time to grab some pre-made baked goods to go. I got a bag of coconut macaroons, bag of several chocolate chip cookies, 2 red velvet cookies, a baked dog cookie biscuit, and a cute Keroppi sugar cookie. Most of these ended up being gifts, but I did enjoy one of the red velvet cookies and for an already sweet flavor profile with white chocolate chips in it, I was already fearing the worse, but went perfect with a glass of milk. The edges were nicely crisped by the baking too. Delicious. Love that they had a stock of cute, pre-decorated cookies available as well (some Sanrio characters, animals, etc.) They also list all the ingredients used in each of the baked goods that they have prepackaged, which is nice. It's also a cafe where you can order drinks, as well as a place you can order cakes custom order or what they have behind the glass already. There's both seating inside and outside.

As for cakes, there is also a decent selection. They sell individual cake slices as well as whole cakes that are perfect for celebrations. The brick toast is amazing, but it is only available for dine in and only during certain hours. I would highly recommend the Volcano Strawberry Toast. Even their drink menu is quite significant. There are fresh teas, milk teas, fruit teas, slushes, frosted milk, and coffees. Their drinks do lean towards the sweeter side. For fruit teas, you can taste the syrup pretty clearly. I do prefer their milk teas instead. Although nothing amazing, the drinks are still worth trying alongside some bread.

There's a small parking lot in the back, but spaces can be hard to find and I ended up having to park on the street the first time I went. (FYI - they are going to open a Goomo tea shop on the corner in the same space!) D'ange has so many fun flavors of buns. I really liked the taro with mochi one. The only thing about the buns is that the fillings tend to be only on one side of the bun, so there are been times as I'm biting into the bun, I'm not getting any filling until the last couple bites. They even sell cookies and all different flavors of toast that would make some yummy brick toast desserts! And if you need a whole cake, they have them in the case ready to go too! The buns I got were great, as were the Portuguese egg tarts. They even sold Chinese tamales at my last visit, so I picked one up too. I don't know many places that sell these, and I used to eat them all the time when my grandma made them years ago, but now that no one in my family knows how to make them, it's a special treat if I can find it. They have ones with meat (with or without peanuts), and some with just the mung bean. They must be really know for this because 2 other parties ahead of me were buying tons of the tamales!

The owner (I presume) handed us a prepackaged brown bag the moment we got there. It wasn't busy at all so the whole transaction was under 5 minutes. It's a mom & pop Asian bakery that's spacious and warm. Our surprise bag contained 7 mini breads: black sesame mochi, red sesame mochi, taro bun with filling, hot dog cheese bread, buo luo bao, ham + cheese bun, and another bread I couldn't quite identify. This is $21 value for $6.99 is what we paid. After heating them up, they tasted almost like fresh so we can't complain. However, I would say these days $3 would get you bigger buns at other similar bakeries, but their fillings were very generous, so it's hard to say. Parking has spots designated to the bakery so look out for the signs.
