As many have mentioned, this isn't a cake you keep overnight. It's a cake you get the day you're going to eat it because the crispy sheets in the cake will go stale overnight! The cake itself was so well balanced, the sheet cakes were both dense but fluffy and there was the perfect ratio of sheet cake to crispy sheets. Definitely not too sweet! I love eating them by taking them apart and eating the halves like an open face sandwich hahah The location itself isn't the most fancy, it's a bit dated but their Chinese crispy cake more than makes up for it all. Cathy Bakery has been one of my go-to spots whenever I'm craving their crispy cake. It's always tasted really good, and it's something I keep coming back for. My mom loves it too and she's very picky. The cake itself has great texture and flavor, with those crispy flakes that make it really unique and satisfying. One small thing to note though -- the crispy flakes can be surprisingly sharp, even if you feel like you've chewed them well. Just something to be a little careful with while eating. What can I say! Order Cathy's Bakery once well known sponge cake with taro, 1/2 sheet for Mother's Day to pick up at Arcadia location. And they FORGOT to make it. I called Arcadia location, in one day before and order this cake for $98, for pick up at around 11 am, on Sunday, the person said better to do 10:30 am so it will be ready for you to pick up. WHY I CAME HERE? My dear friend used to buy cakes from Cathy's Bakery in San Gabriel. I don't know if he still does or not. I have never been here in the past until most recently. My Mom and I had a wonderful lunch at Chong Qing Special Noodles that happens to be next door to Cathy's. I took the opportunity to finally check out this bakery. CAKE / PASTRIES: They are known for their crispy sponge cake. For my first visit, I did buy one sponge cake (no crispy), one pumpkin seed cake, and one napoleon crisp. I enjoyed the sponge cake... it was very light, airy, and bouncy... just delicious! As for the pumpkin seed sponge cake, this did not go down well... cake was dry... will not get again. Napolean crisps were yummy! For my second visit, I ordered a quarter sheet of crispy sponge cake ($28) to share with my colleagues at work. It was SO GOOD! Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of it... will order it again to snap some photos and of course to eat it as well LOL. STAFF / SERVICE: 1st visit - gentleman behind the counter was friendly. I am a deep lover of Napoleon (Mille-feuille). I like it with crispy but not hard phyllo layers, mixed with cream. It has always been my favorite dessert. Mille-feuille is so flaky that it often makes me choke. Cathy's Bakery has a cake called crispy sponge cake, which is two slices of sponge cake with several layers of phyllo in the middle. The dry, flaky layers wrapped with moist sponge cake create a crunchy and crispy texture but won't make you choke. I have never visited Cathy's Bakery, and I didn't even know where it was until I checked Google Maps. The cakes were brought by my daughter's friend to my home on New Year's Day. We ate the cake while playing mahjong. It was sweet, but not too sweet. As a Chinese person, when we describe a cake or dessert, the best is "sweet but not too sweet", which means below average in sweetness is good. By the way, remember to eat them as quickly as possible. Once you leave them overnight, the crispy phyllo in the middle will become soft, and the whole cake will be a waste. Anyway, I never visited the bakery, but my daughter's friend brought us a box of 32 pieces of very tasty crispy sponge cake. It had a very good texture. We didn't finish them all, and it was still edible the second day. But by the third day, the phyllo became chewy, and I didn't want to have it anymore. Still, it's a good cake. I've been coming here since I was a kid. I was recently reminded of this bakery because I had a mad craving for crispy cake, which is a fluffy sponge cake with crispy phyllo sheets in between. You can only buy them as a whole box. I always pass by this bakery and read a post on SGV Eats about strawberry cream cakes. On a Saturday afternoon in June, my sister and I went inside. The guys behind the counter greeted us as we walked in. One spoke English and other guy speaks Mandarin. I bought to 2 sponge cakes and strawberry cake with free writing and candles. The 8 inch was delicious and moist. The height of the cake is not tall but still good cake with plenty of flowers on top. Not much whipped cream with the strawberry pieces as the filling. When I originally called to place the order, I had asked three times to confirm it was pudding AND crispy to which they said yes. Unfortunately, ever since last year, the quality has been hit or miss. I've gotten cakes that were so dry they tasted like they were made several days ago, even though I was told they just made it. I know the difference because I've stored their cakes before, and the so-called 'freshly baked' one tasted just like the ones I've kept in the fridge for a few days. This week, I called to place an order and everything was going fine until I confirmed if the cake would be made fresh, explaining that the last few cakes I'd gotten did not seem fresh. The person on the phone told me to take my business elsewhere and then hung up. When I tried to call back, they wouldn't pick up. I still love their cakes, but that kind of attitude is wild. My uncle had introduced us to the crispy cake at Cathy's Bakery a few years back. I definitely had to go try the place out myself (even if it was out of the way). I called a few days before letting them know I wanted to full sheets of crispy cake (separated into 4 boxes). I believe I tried to order just 3 small boxes worth, but they only let you by in qtys of 2, which makes sense. They also charge an additional fee like 50 cents or a dollar for splitting boxes. I showed up within an hour of opening. Someone had come in before me and was ordering as well. He also wanted crispy cake, but didn't call ahead, but they had a few boxes available for walk-ins. When I mentioned I called in, she took a paper out and confirmed my qty. Then proceeded to rebox to my order specifications. All crispy cake is boxed in full sheets (I believe 16 full cake sandwiches). So if you want them to box it in smaller, the smallest they do is 8. It was a bit odd for the lady to just box it right in front of me. Would have preferred to have it done in the back or already boxed for what I wanted, but no big deal. Each full sheet of crispy cake is $20. We ate it when we got back to South Bay, and it was delicious! You definitely want to finish it within a day. I had tried to bring it for a friend, two days had passed, but the crispiness had already gone. They still did enjoy the cake and cream. Definitely a good desert spot if you need to bring something for a party (or just eat for yourself :P). Parking lot out front. Doesn't seem like it would be an issue. read more

And the cakes with the crunchy layer in the middle. The last year; however, quality has declined tremendously. The cakes have been SO dry. We gave it three tries and were disappointed with the taste and texture each time. We got the mango cake from here for my birthday and the slices of mango were paper thin and not sweet/ripe. It honestly pains me to write this review given how many bdays we used to celebrate with a Cathy's bakery cake, but unless they improve their quality, we won't be buying any more cakes here unfortunately. read more

We tried their coconut twist bread and sponge cup cake. The coconut twist is big, maybe 2-4 serving. For $4, the price is perfect for the size and the flavor is pretty good too. It's not too sweet, so it's perfect for Asian dessert tongue. We wish they have more coconut though. The sponge cup cake is so good! The price is $1.60 and it's one of the most delicious sponge cake I have had yet. It's so so so soft and airy and eggy(?). Texture is like cloud but has a bounce to the bite. We only now found out that they are known for the crispy sponge cake for $18 - if we had known earlier, we would've gotten that too, maybe next time. Other than these 2 that we tried, they have an OK selection of sweet bread. As for savory bread, they don't have that many option other than sausage dog bread and some triangle sandwiches. They also have ham and cheese loaf for $4. It's big and looks good, so maybe we'll try next time. This place is cash only, so prepare yourselves - I know we don't normally carry cash around anymore. Bought a strawberry cake for my nephews 2nd birthday that was enough for 20 people. Really good portion sizes because I'm pretty sure it could feed 30 people. My family and I were very loyal to Cathy's bakery growing up and would go often to get our birthday cakes there. I'm not sure if my taste has changed but the cake seemed a bit more dry than I remember? It needed a bit more cream compared to how much cake was in it. The strawberries were also not as fresh as I had hoped for.
