Just as many patrons are ordering to go as they are to stay. And the sandwiches? Good enough to power many, many steps of sightseeing across cobblestones, or just get you through the afternoon at your home or office in Cincinnati. They've absolutely nailed the ingredients on every sandwich I've tried, with high-quality components selected specifically for how they go together. (Like those little sandwich shops in Europe, there are no substitutions here--unless you'd like gluten free bread.) The bread? Unreal how it can hold these constructions together while being soft and delicious. The meats? Perfection. The cheese? Incredible. That pistachio stuff? I see it in my dreams. The one area where Alveo definitely deviates from its European brethren is portion size--these sandwiches are huge! They come in a paper wrapper, inside a to-go box, and believe me, you will probably need it. Each time I've been to Alveo I've ended up eating about half the sandwich for lunch and the rest for dinner, maybe with a snack in between, and felt perfectly satisfied for the day. The second dish was a ravioli with northern Italian cheese on a bed of butternut squash puree and brown butter. The pasta was SO delicate and the flavors complimented each other so well. The third dish was a 6 hour braised pork shoulder with ricotta gnocchi in a sauce with Calabrian chilis and I don't know what else. We have been to Italy and all the Italian restaurants in Cincinnati and never had anything like this. It was truly phenomenal. Dessert was a apple upside down cake served warm with whipped cream...fantastic.
